  • Are there any Java based libraries that provide game mapping features?

    Hi All, I'm working on a Java web based game in my spare time (springMVC / JSPs etc), and I'm wondering what are my options for dealing with the "game world" or mapping element. My game will be 2d / text based, so I have no need for any OpenGL / Flash etc. My initial idea was to use Google maps and provide a custom overlay, but I want to know if there are any alternatives? For example, if I create a 2d map with all my zones, are there any libraries that will help me plot players, work out distances and so forth? Regards

    I want to create a tag-based website, and I need a tool that I could use (preferably without programming). It's a site where a user could pick tags on a certain item. All tags will be placed under a group that they are logically linked to (I will do that by hand). On the other end - a visitor could choose a tag, and then be redirected to a few items on which that tag was selected the most. Besides this, I need to set up a registration form (for the visitors who want to select tags on a desired item). stackoverflow.com may serve as an example of what I want to achieve. Functionally it is a quite similar approach. I am not sure if further detailing will bring me closer to getting a development advice, but nevertheless - following this template what I would be missing on is: ability to categorize the tags; and so they would fit in one page (overall i assume <200 tags) box where a user could enter a tag and it would be pending until a certain number of users enter such tag ability to limit the number of 'questions' that appear when a visitor chooses a tag - 'question' stands for an item to which users are selecting tags (displayed items would depend on the frequency the tag was assigned - say the top two items) Which software should I try / How should I go about it?   • Web development and tips for building a website and the advantages of using HTML 5 in the site

    I am trying to make a website for my college, and the program starts from jan 13 and we get 15 days of time to develop a running site. The best site will become the college site. I am participating, for all these days i used to participate in C and C++ contests and also won a few contests, now i am really into web dev for the last 2 months. I knew HTML long ago recently i brushed up on it and learnt javascript from "javascript and jquery the missing manual"(sorry for not adding the link) and recently bought "PHP and MySQL web development" and I am going on fine with it, but still a lot of pages to cover in that book. After this what do i need to know ajax is one language to concentrate on, what else do i need to do to make this project up and running. Can someone let me know the tricks of this trade and complete information to build a site like this. Right now i am good with javascript HTML and CSS and thats it, what else I am studying HTML5 and CSS3 its pretty fast and neat. The info on site is a college website which includes students profiles where the have to register their info with college id number and pretty much thats it. Think of it as a college site + a social networking site for students, where they can upload there pics and videos pdf books etc.

  • For a large website developed in PHP, is it necessary to have a framework?

    I am wondering if it is necessary to have a framework or if it is a must-have if I plan to make a large website. Large website could mean a lot of things: in other words, multiple dynamic web pages (40-50 dynamic pages, mysql content) and a lot of visitors (+- a million hits per month). The site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment. I know that it could simplify coding for a developer team, that it includes libraries and a lot of advantages. But I just feel that I don't need that. I think that learning how it works, managing it and installing it would take more time and I could use that time to code. I write PHP the simplest way I could (with performance in mind) and I try to reuse my code/functions/classes most of the time and I make sure that if another developer joins the team, that he won't be lost in the code. I am also planning to use MemCached or another Cache for PHP. As I said, the site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment but will be entirely managed by the hosting company. I am pretty sure the control panel for me to control the basic stuff will be Cpanel. For a developer like me that only knows PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, MYSQL and really basic server management, I feel that it seems to complicated to have a framework. Am I wrong? Is it worth the time to learn all about it? Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

  • How do I simplify a 2D game grid for level management while keeping its by-pixel features?

    (I cross-posted this from StackOverflow as this seems to be a more appropriate forum. I've looked around a little here and I did not find an answer, so I hope this is not a recurring question.) This is a question dealing with 2D world design. I am playing around by creating a 2D bird's eye view shooter game, and I am looking to make the game sleek and advanced. I hope to be able to write physics so projectiles have momentum and knock-down properties. I am immediately running into the problem of world design. I need a way to have level files that store everything there is about a game. This is easiest by just having a grid of objects. But there are thin-walls and other objects that don't seem to fit into a traditional cell of a grid. I want to be able to fit all these together so I can streamline level design; so I don't have to put in the exact pixel-specific start and end of a wall. There doesn't seem to be an obvious translation from level file to game without forcing myself into a pacman-life scenario, meaning a scenario where the game feels boxy and discrete. There is a contrast between the smoothly (relatively) moving characters and finite jumps in a grid. I would appreciate an answer that would describe implementation options or point me to resources that do. I would also appreciate references to sites that teach game design. The language I am using is Java (although I would love to use C or C++, but I can never find convenient resources in those languages). Thank you for any answers.   • How do you turn on the customizable gnome-panel features (like gnome-applets) in Precise?

    I resurrected a broken laptop today. I took out the HDD, put it in a USB 3.0 enclosure, and created a VM that would use it. It was running lucid. I took a screenshot of the desktop before I started "do-release-upgrade", because from experience, I will never have my GUI back the way I want it again. I know how to install gnome-panel to get back the "Gnome Classic" session option. I know how to put my minimize, maximize, and close buttons back in the upper-right hand corner of windows (where they belong). I know how to use gdm instead of lightdm. Unity gets worse in every version (and the other desktop OS is going to be even worse with Metro). Here's what I don't know (in order of importance): 1. How do you make the panels in gnome (gnome-panel, to be precise) customizable again (like they were in older versions of Ubuntu)? 2. How do you install applets in the panels now (right-click is now ignored)? 3. How can you customize all of the window elements (like you could in older versions of Ubuntu)? I can't remember much about maverick, natty, or oneiric (except their names), so I don't know exactly when I lost these capabilities. Edit: (no screenshot), my StackExchange reputation (on other StackExchange sites) doesn't carry over to this site, so I can't post the screenshot. Take a look at the panels in the screen hot. They are nice, compact, and VERY functional (disk mounter applet, frequently used shortcuts, workspaces, show desktop, kill window, and trash icons, etc.) Notice how small the fonts (and how little real estate they waste). You can't notice the compact title bars, fonts, and window icons in this screen shot (since I redacted the rest of the desktop), but it's the same story there. Please help. This actions drop down I would like to have an action to 'Enable Editing'. Upon clicking to enable editing, I would like a PHP variable modified from 'EnableEditing = false' to 'EnableEditing = true'. Why I would like to use PHP maybe questionable, here is why I would like to use PHP under my understanding to clarify; Sections on my page will show to different administrators depending on their level. Upon enabling editing mode, certain contents will then dynamically. <?php if ($_SESSION['user_level_status'] < 2) { if ($editing = enabled) { show this } else { show this } } ?> Something similar to this, I'm new at PHP so this may look incorrect.   • Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

    I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website?     i am using lenovo b460 with 3 GB ram and 500 GB hard disk,(no graphics card). when i live boot Linux mint i was able to connect to WiFi.but when i booted up Ubuntu 11.4 i was not able to connect through WiFi.then later i installed Ubuntu 12.4 and then i got connected with WiFi, but after installing icons and themes through my unity i am not able to view the content in the terminal and the WiFi is also not connecting now even after i changed them all back. wireless connectivity

  • Website only displays correctly in IE using compatibility mode?

    As the resident "IT Whiz" at work (ie: I know how to use a computer) I've been asked to develop a website for our small business. I've altered a wordpress theme for the time being and the company is very happy with the results. The only problem I am having with it at the moment is that for some reason the website does not display correctly and Internet Explorer unless I run it in Compatibility Mode. The main problem that I have is that my menu "slider" (it rotates pictures with links to articles etc) does not display at all, neither does the top menu they are just blink text based links. Even with Compatibility Mode enabled the slider and menus come back but the page is not centered unlike on both Firefox and Chrome. My googling has suggested the most common cause of this is old code but I'm not sure where to be looking. Is it likely in the css file or the actual php? Also any ideas on how to trouble shoot the cause of this? As in is there some dev tools or debugger I can use that would highlight "broken" code for me?

One of the first things I went to do is install Microsoft Security Essentials, thinking I still needed add-on security software, but I've learned here that it isn't required for Windows 8. Witness: Got Windows 8 or Windows RT? Windows Defender for Windows 8 and Windows RT provides the same level of protection against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8, but you don't need to — Windows Defender is already included and ready to go. [...] All well and good. However, on Windows 7, once you installed Microsoft Security Essentials, you got a tray icon, and from there you could access the features of MSE, such as perform custom scans, turn off real-time protection (temporarily, of course), check for updates, etc. However, Defender on Windows 8 doesn't display a tray icon – and yes, I've already made sure I'm displaying all icons in the notification area. So, how to access the similar specific features of Windows Defender on Windows 8?
