• List Squid's internal ip:port to external ip:port mapping table

  I'm assuming that squid keeps a list of internal ip:port that a request is made on and the matching external ip:port that the request is fulfilled with. In the case of a long transfer, such as a file download, it would be nice to be able to see which internal ip:port is downloading the file. I am able to see the traffic and get the external ip:port that squid is using easily with tcpdump or iptraf but I can't find a way to map this back to an internal ip:port.

• Disadvantages of not having a swap partition

  I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. Due to space constraint of the SSD, I did not set a swap partition for the OS, and I have 1.5GB of RAM. There's a warning during installation, but I think it's not a big deal since everything went smoothly. For the long term, would there be any drawbacks of not having a swap partition?

• Exposing server uptime a potential security vulnerability?

  I run a browser-based game and as part of a page with a bunch of game statistics, I have the server uptime listed. It's currently at 177 days and so someone mentioned to me that I shouldn't do this because a long uptime indicates the kernel is old and therefore missing security updates. This certainly sounds logical, but I searched around and couldn't find any evidence to support it. So I'm just wondering, is this indeed something I should not have exposed?

• Capture STDOUT/STDERR of Windows Applictation

  I am using an open source application (conkeror) which is configured via a file containing javascript. Any issues with the javascript is printed to the console. This is fine under Linux as all the information is shown as long as the it is started from a shell. However, under Windows none of the information is show even when started from a shell. Is there a way to make this information displayed in the shell or to capture it in say a file?

• saving excel files to file paths or directories with special characters

  I am unable to get excel 2010 beta to save to a directory which contains square brackets. I have to save elsewhere and copy in. Is there any workaround? Was this a problem with older versions? I realize that I could manually change the directory names, but I didn't want to forgo a long standing organization scheme for the sake of one program if possible to avoid the problem.

• how do i computationally slice an audio file into small samples?

  i need to cut audio files into small samples of even length. What i need is basically a batch processor for audio which does it, and names the slices numerically. i'm on os x and found Audio Splitter, the shortest possible sample length with it is 1 second though, too long for my purpose. Anyone know an alternative?

  I'm trying to generate a username using a single name field in excel which has the person's first name and last name. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user.   I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

  How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

  Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct.
