  Latest roll up patch for 10.1.3.4.1 is now out in the wild. Yep, there are bug fixes but the guys have implemented some great enhancements. I'll be covering some of them over the coming weeks, from collapsing bookmarks in your PDFs to better MS AD support to 'true' Excel templates, yes you read that correctly! Patch is available from Oracle's support site. Just search for patch 9546699. Here's the contents and readme, apologies for the big list but at least you can search against it for a particular fix. So, essentially this task has burned 1 hour per day Sprint Burn Down Chart – What’s not possible? The Sprint burn down chart is calculated from the System.AuthorizedDate and not the System.ChangedDate/System.CreatedDate. So, though you can change the System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates you will not be able to synthesize the sprint burn down chart. Image 1 – By changing the Created Date and Changed Date to ‘18/Oct/2012’ you would have expected the burn down to have been impacted, but it won’t be, because the sprint burn down chart uses the value of field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’ to calculate the unfinished work points. The AsOf queries that are used to calculate the unfinished work points use the value of the field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Image 2 – Using the above code I burned down 1 hour effort per day over 5 days from the task work item, I would have expected the sprint burn down to show a constant burn down, instead the burn down shows the effort exhausted on the 24th itself. Simply because the burn down is calculated using the ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Now you would ask… “Can I change the value of the field System.AuthorizedDate to a historic date” Unfortunately that’s not possible! You will run into the exception ValidationException –  “TF26194: The value for field ‘Authorized Date’ cannot be changed.” Conclusion - You need to be a member of the Project Collection Service account group in order to set the fields ‘System.ChangedDate’ and ‘System.CreatedDate’ to historic dates - You need to instantiate the WorkItemStore using the flag ByPassValidation - The System.ChangedDate needs to be set to a historic date at the time of work item creation. You cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date earlier than the existing ChangedDate and you cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date greater than the current date time. - The System.CreatedDate can only be reset after a work item has been created. You cannot set the CreatedDate at the time of work item creation. The CreatedDate cannot be greater than the current date. You can however reset the CreatedDate to a date earlier than the existing value. - You will not be able to synthesize the Sprint burn down chart by changing the value of System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates, since the burn down chart uses AsOf queries to calculate the unfinished work points which internally uses the System.AuthorizedDate and NOT the System.ChangedDate & System.CreatedDate - System.AuthorizedDate cannot be set to a historic date using the TFS API Read other posts on using the TFS API here… Enjoy!

• OIM 11g : Multi-thread approach for writing custom scheduled job

  In this post I have shared my experience of designing and developing an OIM schedule job that uses multi threaded approach for updating data in OIM using APIs.  I have used thread pool (in particular fixed thread pool) pattern in developing the OIM schedule job. The thread pooling pattern has noted advantages compared to thread per task approach. • .NET Code Evolution

Most of the code is quite good and some is even a masterpiece. And there is also code which makes you think WTF… oh it was written by me. Hm not so bad after all. There are many excuses reasons for bad code. Most often it is time pressure followed by not enough ambition (who cares) or insufficient training. Normally I do care about code quality quite a lot which makes me a (perceived) slow worker who does write many tests and refines the code quite a lot because of the design deficiencies. Most of the deficiencies I do find by putting my design under stress while checking for invariants. It does also help a lot to step into the code with a debugger (sometimes also Windbg). I do this much more often when my tests are red. That way I do get a much better understanding what my code really does and not what I think it should be doing. This time I do want to show you how code can evolve over the years with different .NET Framework versions. Once there was  time where .NET 1.1 was new and many C++ programmers did switch over to get rid of not initialized pointers and memory leaks. There were also nice new data structures available such as the Hashtable which is fast lookup table with O(1) time complexity. All was good and much code was written since then. At 2005 a new version of the .NET Framework did arrive which did bring many new things like generics and new data structures. The “old” fashioned way of Hashtable were coming to an end and everyone used the new Dictionary<xx,xx> type instead which was type safe and faster because the object to type conversion (aka boxing) was no longer necessary. I think 95% of all Hashtables and dictionaries use string as key. Often it is convenient to ignore casing to make it easy to look up values which the user did enter. An often followed route is to convert the string to upper case before putting it into the Hashtable. Hashtable Table = new Hashtable(); void Add(string key, string value) { Table.Add(key.ToUpper(), value); } This is valid and working code but it has problems. First we can pass to the Hashtable a custom IEqualityComparer to do the string matching case insensitive. Second we can switch over to the now also old Dictionary type to become a little faster and we can keep the the original keys (not upper cased) in the dictionary. Dictionary<string, string> DictTable = new Dictionary<string, string>(StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase); void AddDict(string key, string value) { DictTable.Add(key, value); } Many people do not user the other ctors of Dictionary because they do shy away from the overhead of writing their own comparer. They do not know that .NET has for strings already predefined comparers at hand which you can directly use. Today in the many core area we do use threads all over the place. Sometimes things break in subtle ways but most of the time it is sufficient to place a lock around the offender. Threading has become so mainstream that it may sound weird that in the year 2000 some guy got a huge incentive for the idea to reduce the time to process calibration data from 12 hours to 6 hours by using two threads on a dual core machine. Threading does make it easy to become faster at the expense of correctness. Correct and scalable multithreading can be arbitrarily hard to achieve depending on the problem you are trying to solve. Lets suppose we want to process millions of items with two threads and count the processed items processed by all threads. The code does fail because the assumption that Counter++ is an atomic operation is wrong. The ++ operator is just a shortcut for Counter = Counter + 1 This does involve reading the counter from a memory location into the CPU, incrementing value on the CPU and writing the new value back to the memory location. When we do look at the generated assembly code we will see only inc dword ptr [ecx+10h] which is only one instruction. Yes it is one instruction but it is not atomic. All modern CPUs have several layers of caches (L1,L2,L3) which try to hide the fact how slow actual main memory accesses are. Since cache is just another word for redundant copy it can happen that one CPU does read a value from main memory into the cache, modifies it and write it back to the main memory. The problem is that at least the L1 cache is not shared between CPUs so it can happen that one CPU does make changes to values which did change in meantime in the main memory. From the exception you can see we did increment the value 20 million times but half of the changes were lost because we did overwrite the already changed value from the other thread. It does give the expected result but it can result in deadlocks because you do lock on this. This is in general a bad idea since it can lead to deadlocks when other threads use your class instance as lock object. It is therefore recommended to create a private object as lock object to ensure that nobody else can lock your lock object. When you read more about threading you will read about lock free algorithms. They are nice and can improve performance quite a lot but you need to pay close attention to the CLR memory model. It does make quite weak guarantees in general but it can still work because your CPU architecture does give you more invariants than the CLR memory model. For a simple counter there is an easy lock free alternative present with the Interlocked class in .NET. It is educational to look at the generated assembly code. The Interlocked.Increment method must be called which does wondrous things right? Lets see: lock inc dword ptr [eax] The first thing to note that there is no method call at all. Why? Because the JIT compiler does know very well about CPU intrinsic functions. Atomic operations which do lock the memory bus to prevent other processors to read stale values are such things. Second: This is the same increment call prefixed with a lock instruction. The only reason for the existence of the Interlocked class is that the JIT compiler can compile it to the matching CPU intrinsic functions which can not only increment by one but can also do an add, exchange and a combined compare and exchange operation. But be warned that the correct usage of its methods can be tricky. If you try to be clever and look a the generated IL code and try to reason about its efficiency you will fail. Only the generated machine code counts. Is this the best code we can write? Perhaps. It is nice and clean. But can we make it any faster? Lets see how good we are doing currently. But if you simply use simply an integer array of two items, one for each core and add the items at the end you will be much slower than the lock free version (factor 3). Each CPU core has its own cache line size which is something in the range of 16-256 bytes. When you do access a value from one location the CPU does not only fetch one value from main memory but a complete cache line (e.g. 16 bytes). This means that you do not pay for the next 15 bytes when you access them. This can lead to dramatic performance improvements and non obvious code which is faster although it does have many more memory reads than another algorithm. So what have we done here? We have started with correct code but it was lacking knowledge how to use the .NET Base Class Libraries optimally. Then we did try to get fancy and used threads for the first time and failed. Our next try was better but it still had non obvious issues (lock object exposed to the outside). Knowledge has increased further and we have found a lock free version of our counter which is a nice and clean way which is a perfectly valid solution. The last example is only here to show you how you can get most out of threading by paying close attention to your used data structures and CPU cache coherency. Although we are working in a virtual execution environment in a high level language with automatic memory management it does pay off to know the details down to the assembly level. Only if you continue to learn and to dig deeper you can come up with solutions no one else was even considering. I have studied particle physics which does help at the digging deeper part. Have you ever tried to solve Quantum Chromodynamics equations? Compared to that the rest must be easy ;-). Although I am no longer working in the Science field I take pride in discovering non obvious things. • Android Remote Service Keeps Restarting

  Ok so I've built an app that uses a remote service to do some real time GPS tracking. I am using the below code to start and bind to the service. The remote service uses aidl, sets up a notification icon, runs the GPS and locationListener. In onLocationChanged, a handler sends data back to the caller via the callback. Pretty much straight out of the examples and resources online. I want to allow the service to continue running even if the app closes. When the app is restarted, I want the app to again bind to the service (using the existing service if running) and again receive data from the tracker. I currently have the app mode set to singleTask and cannot use singleinstance due to another issue. My problem is that quit often even after the app and service are shut down either from the app itself, or from AdvancedTaskKiller, or a Forceclose, the service will restart and initialize the GPS. touching on the notification will open the app. I again stop the tracking which removes the notification and turns off the GPS Close the app, and again after a few seconds the service restarts. The only way to stop it is to power off the phone. What can I do to stop this from happening. Does it have to do with the mode of operation? START_NOT_STICKY or START_REDELIVER_INTENT? Or do I need to use stopSelf()? My understanding is that if the service is not running when I use bindService() that the service will be created...so do I really need to use start/stopService also? I thought I would need to use it if I want the service to run even after the app is closed. That is why i do not unbind/stop the service in onDestroy(). Is this correct? I've not seen any other info an this, so I,m not sure where to look. Please Help!   Hi, I'd like to somehow find out which CFC is calling my method. I have a logging CFC which is called by many different CFC's. On this logging CFC there's a need to store which CFC called for the log. Whilst I could simply pass the CFC name as an argument to my log.cfc, I find this to be a repetitive task, that might not be necessary, if I somehow could find out "who's" calling the method on log.cfc Is there any programmatic way of achieving this? Because my app has no config xml file for setting the Enterprise Library settings, it is throwing an error, specifically: "The configuration section for Logging cannot be found in the configuration source." "Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging" I would rather not add an XML config file to my app to just turn off Enterprise Library. Is there a code way to do so in my the source for my app? I'd rather have it say something like "An error has occured to prevent you from logging into your account". How do I override the generic error message with my specific one?

  Hi. I'm implementing a RESTful web service in python and would like to add some QOS logging functionality by intercepting function calls and logging their execution time and so on. Basically i thought of a class from which all other services can inherit, that automatically overrides the default method implementations and wraps them in a logger function. • How to kill process on Remote Desktop Connection?

  I am working remotely on a Windows Server via Remote Desktop Connection and some process has hung the server. I looked up how to bring up the Task Manager remote (equivalent of locally doing CTRL+ALT+DEL) and I found CTRL+ALT+END and it doesn't seem to work. I tried logging off and logging back on and the system is still up (tried earlier seeing the properties of My Comptuer, FYI). Does anyone know how I can escape this 'hindrance' and star fresh?!?

• Linq to Sql get SqlCommand when stored procedure execution fails

  Hi all, currently I'm assigning a TextWriter to the Log property of my Linq to Sql data context (per request instancing) and write this to my logging when an exception is thrown while executing a stored procedure (is strongly typed mapped in the context, so not executing a custom command) however when using ADO.NET we normally inspect the SqlCommand upon unhandled exception to read out the parameters and log them is it possible to access the SqlCommand that was used for executing a Stored Procedure in L2S so we can reuse that existing logging component? This would be far nicer than the current Log TextWriter solution.... greetings, Tim

• Log4j: Issues about the FallbackErrorHandler

  I am working on a client-server-application and wanted to implement a flexible Loggingframework, so I chose log4j, which doesn´t really evolve anymore, but it is still handy framework. Because the Logging happens along the network, i wanted a solution for the case, that the network drive isn´t available, so the Logger has to change its destination file(s). Now I wanted to use the FallbackErrorHandler (configured with a XML-File) from the Log4j-library and the implementation worked: When my network drive isn´t available, it switches to a local Logfile, so no logging should be lost. But I headded two problems since yesterday and couldn´t figure or find out, how to solve it. No return to initial Logging Configuration: When the network drive is on again and the Logger could write to the old destinations, log4j still logs at the local drive and I can´t figure out, how to notify the original (primary) Logger to start again. I also tried to attach a second Appender to the ErrorHandler, which should mirror the failed primary Logger, that it tries to write on the network destination and when the network is on again, it logs in both files, on the local and on the network drive. But unfortunately it didn´t work out, I only got a failure message that the ErrorHandler-content doesn´t fit. log4j:WARN The content of element type "errorHandler" must match "(param*,root-ref?,logger-ref*,appender-ref?)". This is the responsible code. <appender name="TraceAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.DailyRollingFileAppender"> <!-- The second appender-ref "TestAppender" leads to the error. --> <errorHandler class="org.apache.log4j.varia.FallbackErrorHandler"> <logger-ref ref="com.idoh"/> <appender-ref ref="TraceFallbackAppender"/> <appender-ref ref="TestAppender"/> </errorHandler> <param name="datePattern" value=".yyyy-MM-dd" /> <param name="file" value="logs/Trace.txt" /> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%-6r %d{HH:mm:ss,SSS} [%t] %-5p - %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> So, how could I trigger log4j to reset to initial configuration or hold a second appender parallel to the "Local-Logger". My Application should work by itself and shouldn´t have to be restarted often. First Error message is swallowed: I recognized, that the first message, which leads to the switching between the primary logger and the FallbackErrorHandler (for example a logging-request to a readonly-File), is swallowed, so neither the primary logger logs it (because it can´t) nor the backup-Logger knows what it missed. So anybody else ran in this problem and could solve it? Or has any suggestions?

  The following code prints nothing CHECK_INCLUDE_FILE_CXX(glog/logging.h GLOG_INCLUDE) IF(GLOG_INCLUDE) MESSAGE("YY") ENDIF(GLOG_INCLUDE) But I have the following environment variable set: export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=/usr/local/include And, "ls /usr/local/include/glog/logging.h" returns the file. I tried using include_directories( "/usr/local/include" ) but it doesn't work either.
