• Problems installing 13.10 inside VMWare Player 4

  In the past I had no problems installing Ubuntu 12.04 inside VMWare Player 4.0.4 on my Windows 7 Pro machine. Now I installed Ubuntu 13.10 and have a couple of problems: the default screensize (even during the installation) is gigantic I've told Ubuntu to automatically login - after reboot the gigantic screen occurs without showing anything, without doing anything on mouse clicks, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work switching to console using Ctrl+Alt+F1...F6 works, but is incredible slow invoking 'sudo reboot now' does not succeed, it prints Killing all remining processes... [fail] Restoring resolver state... [ OK ] Will now switch to single-user mode root@ubuntu1310:~# invoking now 'shutdown now' will soon show the same error. What I need to do to get Ubuntu 13.10 up and running in VMWare Player?

• openGL Camera setup for Zoom in/out centered at point under cursor

  I am trying to implement a zoom in/out navigation mode in a openGL 3dViewer. I was able to implement zoom functionality centered at screen center just by moving eye towards the center in perspective mode. Now i am trying to do the zoom centered at arbitrary position under the cursor. I am unable to figure out how should i move my camera forward and backward such that point under cursor remains at the same screen coordinates after zoom in/out. Any help would be appreciated. Below are the images which show the desired effect. Just to mention, I am working in a perspective mode with eye target and up vectors to control camera. Same effect i found in google sketchup and 'zoom to mouse position' setting in blender.

• How do I disable the global application menu?

  I'm fairly excited for Unity, as it looks like a promising new direction for Ubuntu. However, I do have a concern - will it be possible to use Unity without the global menu? I have my window manager set to focus-follows-mouse/sloppy focus, and find the productivity gains to be immense. Sloppy focus is incompatible, however, with global menus, as it is possible for the focus to change while you move from window to menu. Will Unity support an option to use window menus while still using Unity?

• OpenGL Vertex Attributes - Normalisation

  Alas, I have searched, and have found no definitive answer. When would you normalize the vertex data in OpenGL using the following command: glVertexAttribPointer(index, size, type, normalize, stride, pointer); I.e when would normalize == GL_TRUE; what situations, and why would you choose to let the GPU do the calculations instead of preprocessing it? All examples I have ever seen, have this set to GL_FALSE; and I cannot personally see a use for it. But Khronos aren't stupid, so it must be there for something useful (and probably common).

• Effects of automated time tracking/monitoring [closed]

  What are the effects of monitoring the developers' computer usage? (Which program they use - based on the title of the applications - and how much time in a day they use the keyboard and mouse.) Would it has any positive or negative effects on productivity, morale, motivation, etc? It will not have any direct impact on the developers' salary or their performance review it's just for curiosity. The developer and their manager will only see the results. Would it change anything if only the developer is allowed to see the results? The developer can disable the monitoring (for privacy) but it won't count as work time (in the monitoring program).

• Dual monitor gnome-shell broke itself

  Ok, lets get this over with. I have a dual-monitor, ati setup on gnome-shell that was just fine until this morning. Then, this happened. Look closer... Whatever has happened to my ubuntu setup? My second monitor still works, entirely normally, with the exception that I cannot (obviously) access activities (as i am in gnome-fallback ). I do wish to resume my work... EDIT: By entirely normally, I mean I can move my mouse over it and have seperate windows on it and stuff. It's not mirroring. UPDATE: Unity works entirely normally.

• Store and create game objects at positions along terrain

  I have a circular character that rolls down terrain like that shown in the picture below. The terrain is created from an array holding 1000 points. The ground is drawn one screen width infront and one screen width behind. So as the character moves, edges are created infront and edges are removed behind. My problem is, I want to create box2d bodies at certain locations along the path and need a way to store these creator methods or objects. I need some way to store a position at which they are created and some pointer to a function to create them, once the character is in range. I guess this would be an array of some sort that is checked each time the ground is updated and then if in range, the function is executed and removed from the array. But I'm not sure if its even possible to store pointers to functions with parameters included... any help is much appreciated!

• OpenGL ES 2.0 gluUnProject

  I've spent more time than I should trying to get my ray picking program working. I'm pretty convinced my math is solid with respect to line plane intersection, but I believe the problem lies with the changing of the mouse screen touch into 3D world space. • What are good JS libraries for game dev? (HTML5)

  If i decide to write a simple game both text and graphical (2d) what libs may i use? Assuming we are using a HTML5 compatible browser. The main things i can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but i am unsure how important this will be to me at first). Perhaps with mixing and chaining sounds or looping forever until stop. Networking (low priority) to connect a user to another or to continuously GET data without multiple request (i know this exist but i dont know how easy it is to setup or use. But this isnt important to me. Its for the question).

• How do I get the Touchpad Settings working on a Dell XPS 13" Ultrabook?

  Today I got an brand new Dell XPS 13 and I really like it. Wifi/Bluetooth/Brightness works very well. But only the Touchpad makes me insane. Okay, Multitouch is really nice and i love it on my Macbook but... i must click to click. How can I set up that is an "touch" to click? Its makes me insane. click, click, click.. Can I configure it? • thunderbird-bin causing CPU (core) lockup (12.04, 64bit, up-to-date)

  I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice?

• Plug-in or framework recommendation for showing content preview fly-over in CMS

  The requirement is to have either front end plug-in or back end processor that generates the preview of contents (such as images, videos, PDF files, HTML pages) in a preview popup when user mouse hovers the content. I did some research on this, seems that there are assorted jquery plugins for each type of files, but what we are looking for is a framework that handles all types of file previews. Ideally, we want to generate preview images on the backend, considering the cost of retrieving content on front end. I did find some open source or proprietary CMS that provides this feature, but usually they are shipped as one suite and the API for file preview might not be open. Is there any java or jquery framework that handles file preview? Thanks a lot

• Single responsibility principle - am I overusing it?

There are three basic tasks which could be carried out - View existing ledger entries in table format. Create new ledger entry using create button. Click on a ledger entry in the table (mentioned in first pointer) and view its details in next page. You could nullify a ledger entry in this page. (There are couple more operation/validations in each page but fore sake of brevity I will limit it to these) So I decided to create three different classes - LedgerLandingPage CreateNewLedgerEntryPage ViewLedgerEntryPage These classes offer the services which could be carried out in those pages and Selenium tests use these classes to bring application to a state where I could make certain assertion. When I was having it reviewed with on of my colleague then he was over whelmed and asked me to make one single class for all. Though I yet feel my design is much clean I am doubtful if I am overusing Single Responsibility principle

• HTML5 clicking objects in canvas

  I have a function in my JS that gets the user's mouse click on the canvas. Now lets say I have a random shape on my canvas (really its a PNG image which is rectangular) but i don't want to include any alpha space. My issue lies with lets say i click some where and it involves a pixel of one of the images. The first issue is how do you work out the pixel location is an object on the map (and not the grass tiles behind). Secondly if i clicked said image, if each image contains its own unique information how do you process the click to load the correct data. Note I don't use libraries I personally prefer the raw method. Relying on libraries doesn't teach me much I find.

• Lubuntu 13.10 selected LX games desktop now can't login

  I logged out of my normal desktop and selected LX games from the dropdown list and logged back in. This led me to a black screen and now I can't see the login screen in order to change back to my normal desktop. On startup the machine boots normally, the lubuntu splash screen shows up, then it goes to a black screen with nothing on it - not even a mouse cursor. I can bring up a terminal using ctrl+alt+F2. Is there a way via terminal to change my desktop environment back to its previous state? Or alternatively, is there a file I can edit where my preferred desktop is stored? (The machine is dual-booted so I can access the Lubuntu files from LXLE which is installed on a second partition). The machine in question is a Toshiba A200 laptop.

• Navigate Quickly with JustCode and Ctrl+Click

  Ctrl + Click is a widely used shortcut for Go To Definition in many development environments but not in Visual Studio. We, the JustCode team, find it really useful so we added it to Visual Studio. But we didn't stop there - we improved it even further. Read on to find the details. With JustCode you get an enhanced Go To Definition. By default you can execute it in the Visual Studio editor using one of the following shortcuts: Middle Click, Ctrl+Left Click, F12, Ctrl+Enter, Ctrl+B. The first usage of this feature is not much different from the default Visual Studio Go To Definition command use it where a member, type, method, property, etc is used to navigate to the definition of that item. For example, if you have this method:         public void Start()         {             lion = new Lion();             lion.Roar();         } If you hold Ctrl and click on the usage of the lion you will go to the lion member definition. If you hold Ctrl and click on the Lion you will go to the Lion class definition. What we added is the ability to easily find all the usages of the item you just navigated to. For example:     public class Lion     {         public void Roar()         {             Console.WriteLine("Rhaaaar");         }     }   If you hold Ctrl and click on the Lion definition you will see all the usages of the Lion type; if you click on the Roar method definition you will see all the usages of the Roar method: And if there is only one usage you will get automatically to that usage. In the examples I use C#, but it works also in VB.NET, JavaScript, ASP.NET and XAML. Why we like this feature? Let me first start with how the Ctrl+Click (or Go To Definition command) is used. We noticed that developers use it especially in what we call "code browsing sessions". In simple words this is when you browse around the code looking for a bug, just reading the code or searching for something. Sounds familiar? In our experience when you go to the definition of some item you often want to know more about it and the first thing you need is to find its usages. With JustCode this is just one click away. Why Ctrl+Click/Middle Click over F12/Ctrl+Enter/Ctrl+B? Actually you can use all of them. But during these "code browsing sessions" we noticed that most developers use the mouse. So the mouse is already in use and pressing Ctrl+Click (or the Middle Click) is so natural. During heavy coding sessions or if you are a keyboard type developer F12 (or any of the other keyboard shortcuts) is the key. We really use heavily this feature not only in our team but in the whole company. It saves us a bit of time many times a day. And it adds up. We hope you will like it too. • Can't get Past Login Screen -Graphics Drivers 12.10

  Newbie Linux user here. I just installed Ubuntu 12.10, dual booting with Windows 8 Preview Release Build 8400 on a Dell Precision 490 workstation with Nvidia Quandro NVS 55/280 PCI graphics card. I cannot login to Ubuntu - after entering my password and pressing enter, the screen graphics gets garbled for a few seconds, and then the screen goes black showing only the mouse cursor. I suspect it's something to do with my Graphics Card, everything on the GUI login screen feels very sluggish. I know what I have provided here doesn't give you much information, would appreciate it if I could get some guidance on how to provide more useful logs. Thank you.

• How do I run Conkeror in Emacs?

  I have been using emacs for about 3 months, and have been amazed by how much improved my interactions with my computer are. I now use eshell rather than a separate terminal, and the last thing I still need to leave my emacs environment for is for my web browser. I have been reading up on Conkeror, and it seems almost ideal (emacs keybindings, no need to use the mouse etc.) but it runs in a separate window. If it could be run within emacs, it would mean that I would never really have to have interaction with the actual OS, which would be good for someone who is forced to rotate between linux, mac and windows (i.e. me). I understand that it couldn't be run from emacs in -nw mode, but would it be possible (or likely) that Conkeror could be setup to run within an emacs window? Note: - I've tried w3m and didn't really like it

• What are the files in /dev/input/ and what they do?

  I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've started to search around everywhere and check everything! Recently I saw these files at /dev/input/eventX, js0, mice, mouseX. By printing the output using "cat" I realized they are somehow responsible for mouse and keyboard input but the output had an strange character encoding (even for the keyboard). My questions are, what are these files and how can I interpret the data of these files? Are there any other places that I can access the input/output of my Ubuntu machine? And are there any ebooks, manual or something similar that I can check the duty and structure of ubuntu system files? (i.e. to find the answer of such question)

• how to launch grub menu for ubuntu guests in virtualbox?

  I have ubuntu 12.04 alpha installed in virtualbox. When the virtual machine is started, it boots directly to the login screen without showing the grub menu. How can I get the grub menu to show up on start? Please note: the graphics is broken after recent updates, so i cannot login and make the changes. it is stuck at the screen "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode" and the mouse and other keys do not work. • After some wired flash out, I can't login to wmii any more, how to fix it?

  I've been using wmii on Ubuntu14.04(virtual machine on win7) for months. During which, I got pop out to login interface servaral times due to some wired mouse click action. But today, after I met such wired pop out, I can't login to wmii any more. I'll be stuck at the interface like The bottom yellow bar is the command area for wmii. but it has no response when I press Mod + p I restart my machine, and even reinstalled wmii, but everytime when I tried to login wmii, I stuck at that interface. By the way, I login to wmii from the login interface, where I can choose between Gnome and wmii. How to fix this? I'm crying for help! ps: I can login to gnome normally

• 13.04 - Extenal monitor plugged on laptop HDMI shows image but lags a lot

  It uses an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M. When I plug in the monitor, it shows some images but with bad FPS and lagging a lot. For example, when I move the mouse pointer, it leaves a trail that vanishes from time to time. I didn't install Nvidia drivers because every time I did this on past versions I ended up with an unbootable system. On past versions I just gave up trying to use the monitor cause it never showed anything regardless of what driver I installed. But since 13.04 ALMOST made it, I'll make another tries. ps.: Works perfectlty on Windows 7/8

• Gnome 3 - Old fashioned buttons and menus

  I've upgraded to Gnome 3 and the problem I'm facing is that when I restart, sometimes the menus and buttons look old-fashioned like this: whereas sometimes, it looks modern and neat like this: Notice the differences between the two: here are a few differences: The menu bar (notice the difference in fonts, dark grey color of Snapshot1 vs the light grey color in Snapshot2 in the background) The file navigation bar bellow the menu bar (notice the 'Home' button there and also the left arrow button) The left-hand side navigation bar (font, background color and color of selected folder) The old style look effects the GTK aspects of the interface, such as the menu, buttons, mouse pointer etc. Another observation is that changing the GTK themes does using gnome-tweak-tool when the old style look is loaded does NOT work. However, this works when the regular look is loaded. How can I ensure that the old-fashioned look does not load on boot?

• keyboard shortcut to switch focus between separate X screens?

  I'm using XFCE on a dual monitor setup, with Xorg configured to separate X screens (neither twinview nor cinerama is working on GF470 with latest nvidia drivers). I'm not using xrandr. Suppose I have firefox running on one screen (:0.0) and thunderbird on the other (:0.1). When I want to switch focus from thunderbird to firefox, I need to move my mouse pointer to the firefox window and click (alt-tab switches between windows on a single screen only). Is there any keyboard shortcut for switching focus between screens?
