  Hi We are looking into putting a hardware firewall into a data center to protect our rack of servers. We are using the servers for terminal services and we have 2 x 1GB connections to the Internet. We have about 50 servers supporting about 250 users which will grow very soon to 500 users. We plan to purchase 2 hardware firewalls to provide HA. Do you think the Sonicwall NSA 240 with Total Secure is a good match for this in terms of performance and protection (from spyware, virus etc?) or is there a better purchase? (Maybe a Watchguard X5 or X8?)

• Older raid controllers in raid 5 vs. Jbod and SW raid

Im in the fortunate position to have 6 Supermicro older VOD servers with the following config: Supermicro 3U case, 3xPSU Dual Xeon 3ghz P4 class cpu (5 years old.. havnt checked the exact type) 4GB Ram 3ware 9500-8 SATA controller 8 SATA SLOTS and alot of free drives. 2GB FLASH Bootdrive What im curious about is the RAID5 performance on these old beasts in HW mode vs. SW on Linux with the controller set in JBOD mode. Im thinking on using Centos 5.5 or Ubuntu or ZFS RaidZ on Opensolaris. Any tips? or reccomendations ? best regards TEB

• Forwarding emails to nonexisting users/aliases to external mail server

  I'm in the works of installing a postfix mailserver on a machine currently being used as web server. As of right now, I've got it working as far as that I can send and receive emails using telnet through port 25. However, as my customer is concerned with downtime, I'd like to setup all the accounts one by one over time, and making sure it works, rather than just cutting the cord to the old mail server and start creating new accounts on the new system. How can I add the domain customer.com to my mail server and just add something like [email protected] to the users and aliases-lists without the web server trying to send all emails with the @customer.com domain to the new mail server? I'm running ubuntu, using postfix and postfix-mysql on the new machine, the old mail server is on a hosted environment somewhere else, where I don't have any control.

In this spirit, some efforts have been made to make 'light' ports of Java or Mono (C# for Linux), and they range in the 80-50 MB (instead of the 100-200 MB). Add a Web server (Apache, IIS, etc.) to the scripting engine and you can happily dive into the GB (IIS + .Net) only to load the tool in memory. Anybody with more modest tools in the specs area?

How do I get the best quality?(Even if the difference is in fact so small it's neglectible) By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program. By raising the volume at the Operating System level (for instance, by clicking the 'speaker' icon on the windows bar and turning the volume up) By turning the volume up on the Amplifier or Speakers that are attached to your computer, and thus changing the volume on the 'hardware' Does programs vs OS matter? • What kind of SATA interface is on a Thinkpad X120E?

  I recently ordered a Thinkpad X120E with an AMD Fusion (Zacate) chipset. I am eyeballing an SSD for it, however newer SSDs are coming out with 6Gbps SATA interfaces. I doubt such a cheap laptop has 6Gbps SATA, but I'm debating waiting the a bit longer until the Intel 510 series come out, if anything to future proof myself by putting it in this laptop and then later on when I do upgrade to a laptop with 6Gbps SATA I'll be good to go. The hardware manual mentions that the motherboard is for a "AMD Fusion E-350" but the specifications of each hardware part isn't part of the manual. Does anyone have any information on the kind of SATA controllers in Fusion laptops so I can make a better purchasing decision?

• AMD Processors and the Windows Phone 8 Emulator

  I would madly appreciate it if anyone in this community would help me with my question. The background is that I want to develop Windows Phone 8 applications but both of my current computer processors do not have Hardware Virtualization & Second Level Address Translation that are needed to run the Emulator. I have my eyes on an AMD computer g7-2243us (I like it because it has 1600x900 screen res). I looked up this Link that shows that this computer's AMD processor (Next Gen AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated 1.9GHz up to 2.8GHz 4MB L2 Cache Processor) supports AMD-V Hardware Virtualization. So, will this computer be able to run the emulator? Thank you so much for your answers. I'm pretty sure it will run the emulator, but I just want to make sure before spending $400. • Criteria strings, how many different criteria can be entered to retrieve specific data?

  For our membership database we are currently using an old DOS program "Arclist". The program is old but the one feature we desperately need in a database program is to be able to enter multiple criteria at one time for more of a "one time" extraction of the data meeting all the various criteria entered in what I call a "criteria string". An example may be extracting only those records with zip codes matching (67893, 54235, 54323, 54201, 54302, 54303, 54301, 67894, 67895). Another set of criteria might be to omit records, not equal to, one type of criteria in one field and also extract records matching criteria in another field. So we would want records "not equal to" in one field, but whose information equals requested information in another field.

• Should a neglected iPhone still be used?

  I replaced my first iPhone (upgraded from version 1 to 3G) about 18 months ago. Since the upgrade, my original iPhone has been just sitting on shelf in my office. I am thinking about dusting off my old iPhone, reactivating through AT&T and giving it to my wife. The phone hasn't been used for quite some time and the battery is completely dead. I'm not sure about iPhone battery lifetimes, but I'm questioning whether a charge will keep. Should I invest in a new iPhone or take a chance reactivating the old one?

  Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

• Windows 7, Drivers, Cloning and Sysprep

  I have Windows 7 working on one machine but when I move it off to the new machine it crashes. If this is a driver issue do I need to download the drivers and install them first? Or do I install Windows 7 on the new machine first then copy the drivers folder over to the other disk so it will boot up correctly? EDIT: I was trying this as well: http://www.todo-backup.com/support/tutorial/redeploy-system-to-dissimilar-hardware.htm EDIT: I tried sysprep but on bootup I see the Windows logo then the system crashes. I can stick the drive back in the old hardware and it runs fine.

• Updating PHP on a Plesk managed Server

  I just updated PHP and MySQl on my VPS with the current Versions from Atomic Repo. Everything worked out fine so far. From console I get the new PHP 5.3: [root@server phpMyAdmin]# php -v PHP 5.3.16 (cli) (built: Aug 20 2012 11:18:05) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies with the ionCube PHP Loader v4.0.5, Copyright (c) 2002-2011, by ionCube Ltd. But through Apache I still get the old version (5.1.6). The server is running some old version of crappy Plesk Panel. That gives me the option to choose between Apache Modul, fCGI and CGI-BIN. Any hints, how to update apache, so it will use the new PHP Version? EDIT: I just needed to restart httpd (/etc/init.d/httpd restart)

• Does Cisco anyconnect replace original network connection session?

  When using Cisco anyconnect VPN, it seems the existing network connection is still going through old connection session (Is there any way to find out)? The reason is because when using Cisco VPN client connect to gateway, usually the Messenger Live, Skype will be disconnected and requires to reconnect. But using anyconnect doesn't need to reconnect. So I am guessing if those old sessions still go through original network connection. Which means, both connection is existing at the same time. Take my case for example: connection 1: wireless NIC - cable modem - my cable ISP - internet connection 2: anyconnect - wireless NIC - cable modem - my cable ISP - VPN gateway - internet Am I correct? Is there any way to check this? Thanks.

• Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

• What is causing a vm to exhibit packet loss?

  We have a pretty nice piece of hardware set up to run multiple virtual machines in vmware and one of the vm's is an instance of Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2005. For some reason we occasionally see 10-20 seconds of straight packet loss to this machine from remote machines (my workstation) as well as other vm's on the same physical hardware. I am using PingPlotter to keep a close eye on the packet loss. So far we've turned off flow control on the NIC but we are already running out of other things to try. What might be causing this and how can I identify the problem? Note: We also have another server with a very similar configuration with the same type of problem to a lesser extent (because its not used as heavily?)

• Port forwarding on D-Link DIR-615 super-slow, useless

  Hello I have replaced my old router with DIR-615 from D-Link, and now the port forwarding is so slow it makes the router practically useless. Accessing the router itself (admin UI) is without issues, no delay whatsoever. But when I try to access a service on another computer in the network the requests take minutes and minutes. (E.g. I can see source of my GWT-app main page, but loading additional CSS and JS files takes years.) If anyone could recommend any further diagnostics I should do to figure out what is happening it would be great. Few notes: happens with more services (web-app on Tomcat, viewing directory index via Apache) it does not make a difference whether the service is hosted on wired or wireless PC accessing the service on a localhost works fine turning off firewall on the target PC does not make difference either (makes sense) when I replace this router with the old one (both 192.168.1.1) everything works fine I see nothing suspicious in the router's log I believe I have the latest firmware (4.11) DIR-615 sucks, it already died once completely Regards Jarda Z.

• Debugging Internal Emails with Exchange 2003/2010

  I am in the middle of migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 SP1. I have moved one mailbox over to the new server EXCHANGE2010 . For some reason if an internal email is sent from someone on EXCHANGE2003 (the old server), it is not delivered to the new mailbox on EXCHANGE2010. Where should I look to debug this problem? What logs should I consult? Update: I found the messages in Queues on the old server, listed as messages with an unreachable destination.

• How to rename a BTRFS subvolume?

  I have a BTRFS filesystem with a set of subvolumes in it. So far so good. I need to change the name of a subvolume, unfortunately the btrfs program does not allow me to rename a subvolume. Searching with Google has yielded some results, one said I can just mv, the other said I can just snapshot to a new name and delete the old subvolume. Before I crash my partition and have to reload it from the backup (it's quite large), my question is: What is the currently best way to rename a subvolume? Is it ok to just mv it, or will it invalidate some internal structures? Is making a new snapshot and removing the old subvolume the way to go, or has this some drawbacks? I know everything is still experimental, but for my purposes it has been working quite well (so far, and I have incremental backups for each day).

• Replacing a Windows File Server

  We have a Windows file server that needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, there are to many custom build applications, shares, and random things that rely on the existence of that file server to just stand up a new one, so we need to make the transition as seamless as possible. We decided to copy the contents of the old server to the new and then rename the new one with the same name. I have made a list of everything I need to do. Am I missing anything? The new file server is up and running I copied the directories of the old file server to the new one I set up all the shares/permissions for those directories in advance Copy the contents from oldserver to newserver robocopy \vash\d$\nasshare\ \vash2\l$\originalvash\nasshare\ /E /ZB /copyall /dcopy:T /FP /x /v /fp /np /mt:8 /eta /log:robocopy.log /tee Rename and reIP oldserver to something else (need it available if something is missing) Rename and reIP newserver to oldserver Obviously, I need to test if shares are working properly. Are there any steps im missing?

• How to get the best LINPACK result and conquer the Top500?

  Given a large Linux HPC cluster with hundreds/thousands of nodes. What are your best practices to get the best possible LINPACK benchmark (HPL) result to submit for the Top500 supercomputer list? To give you an idea what kind of answers I would appreciate here are some sub-questions (with links): How to you tune the parameters (N, NB, P, Q, memory-alignment, etc) for the HPL.dat file (without spending too much time trying each possible permutation - esp with large problem sizes N)? Are there any Top500 submission rules to be aware of? What is allowed, what isn't? Which MPI product, which version? Does it make a difference? Any special host order in your MPI machine file? Do you use CPU pinning? How to you configure your interconnect? Which interconnect? Which BLAS package do you use for which CPU model? (Intel MKL, AMD ACML, GotoBLAS2, etc.) How do you prepare for the big run (on all nodes)? Start with small runs on a subset of nodes and then scale up? Is it really necessary to run LINPACK with a big run on all of the nodes (or is extrapolation allowed)? How do you optimize for the latest Intel/AMD CPUs? Hyperthreading? NUMA? Is it worth it to recompile the software stack or do you use precompiled binaries? Which settings? Which compiler optimizations, which compiler? (What about profile-based compilation?) How to get the best result given only a limited amount of time to do the benchmark run? (You can block a huge cluster forever) How do you prepare the individual nodes (stopping system daemons, freeing memory, etc)? How do you deal with hardware faults (ruining a huge run)? Are there any must-read documents or websites about this topic? E.g. I would love to hear about some background stories of some of the current Top500 systems and how they did their LINPACK benchmark. I deliberately don't want to mention concrete hardware details or discuss hardware recommendations because I don't want to limit the answers. However, feel free to mention hints e.g. for specific CPU models.

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions.   I have enabled - enable webGL by entering Enable WebGL in opera:config by setting the value to 1, and Enable Hardware Acceleration similarly, then restart the browser - Opera 12 on Windows & tried to open - http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/. This gives me an alert saying - Your browser failed to initialize WebGL. Please guide me on - What's going wrong? opera:gpu says : Hardware acceleration Disabled Direct3D 10 Backend not supported Could not load library OpenGL Backend not supported Could not load library But,same thing (http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/) works fine on Chrome! • Vista stuck at "Shutting down..." screen. Any way to get verbose logging?

  Hi all, My home machine has been running fine for about 3 years, no problems at all. Within the last couple of weeks it's had real trouble trying to shut down. It'll get so far and then just sit there at the "Shutting down..." screen for hours. I've left it overnight, I've tried in safe mode, all to no avail. These days, I just wait for the disk activity to finish up and then hold the power button to turn it off. Feels dirty as, especially because there's a RAID involved! The hardware itself is in pretty good shape and of decent spec; Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, 1TB RAID 1+0, so it's not quite like a 7 year old PC coming to end of life! In the last month, hardware hasn't changed except for a new monitor. Admittedly I haven't tried unplugging the monitor but I've never heard of that preventing a shutdown. I might give it a whirl later I guess, as a last resort. I've uninstalled old apps, done updates, checked the event log, looked in device manager, uninstalled all non-present devices, disabled various non-critical devices (imaging, audio etc), unplugged peripherals, stopped non-essential services, unplugged the network, disabled the network adapter entirely, ran chkdsk, verified my RAID, the list goes on. But not a single lead. I'm pretty stumped. It could be hardware, but I have no other evidence to suggest so; when the PC is running, it runs fine. Temperatures are good, gaming is smooth as always, disk performance is fine. Event log even makes it look like the shutdown was completed (gets to the point where the event log service stops). In fact, the PC doesn't appear to realise that I cut the power to it. So my question is, does anyone know if there is a way I can get some verbose output (or a log) from shutdown to give me some idea of what is causing the issue? I'm guessing it's stuck unloading some app/driver but it would be good to get some specifics! Unless anyone has any other ideas? I suspect a reinstall would resolve the issue, however I'm looking to get a new PC built in the next month or so, and the reinstall is going to be quite a big job so I'd rather just wait until then if it comes to that. Would still be nice to get this sorted in the mean time though. Cheers!
