  • Can't build wxWidgets on Mac OSX. Need help, please.

    I've been trying everything but something or other always stops me cold. Now, I'm trying 2.8.10 (can't make 2.8.7 work) and I keep getting this linker error. Configure shows --with-opengl = no, yet it wants it but can't find it?     I am a Ex-Ubuntu user and decided to go to OSX mainly because I was going to be working in an OSX shop and felt like I needed a more mainstream OS to run Production level software packages like Adobe. 6 months in, and I am more than happy with my MacBook Pro purchase. Just the physical build quality alone warrants the premium price tag, but I am now looking at my day to day demands and realize that I really do not use any software that prevents me from turning back to Ubuntu. My question now is, in terms of 2010 MacBook Pro, How is the hardware compatibility? Does the trackpad multitouch gesture work with 10.10? is it oversensitive? And for anyone that has a relatively new macbook pro that is running Ubuntu, How is the general experience coming from an OSX environment?

  • Just updated, after reboot my computer won't start up again

    I have a macbook that I use on occasion which dual boots Ubuntu and OSX (It has rEFIt installed). I turned it on for the first time in a while and it needed a bunch of updates. So I let it run, and restarted it when it asked. When it was booting up, it got stuck at a light blue screen. There was nothing on the screen to indicate that it was doing anything - I figured it just got stuck or something, so I turned it off and back on. (I suspect now it was actually working, but I had no indication that it hadn't just frozen) Now I can't access either OSX or my Ubuntu partition. When I choose ubuntu on the rEFIt menu, it shows "No bootable device -- insert book disk and press key". If I try to start up OSX is looks like it starts loading, but instead of an apple logo there's a crossed out circle icon.

  • I think I killed my portable HD will trying to make Ubuntu bootable from it. How to undo?

    I have OSX. My HD appears as two drives; one formatted for OSX, and the other FAT32 for everything. Note: I am a complete Terminal noob. I followed the How to create a bootable USB stick on OS X page. I installed it to the Mac formatted partition, which I'm 95% sure was a mistake. I was thinking more in terms of free space than proper format. Anyway, it doesn't boot, and I can't get the HD to appear when I plug it back into OSX. I have no idea how to undo what I did in Terminal. Any ideas?

    Firefox takes up so much space on small screens, so I'm searching for solutions that make firefox' interface less space consuming on ubuntu 12.04 with gnome3. Good examples are the chromium-style, but chromium is kind of slow in gnome3. Chromium does it, firefox on osx does it. Is this also possible on ubuntu via a custom modification or something?   • How to find the static ip address of my router?

    I bricked my Linksys WRT54GS router when trying to change the firmware on it from dd-wrt to open-wrt. In order to unbrick it, I need to be able to do an ftp transfer to it. The problem is that it isn't using DHCP addressing and I can't just use the default ip address of 192.168.1.1. I have to use the ip address it was set at before it got bricked. The problem is I forgot what that number was. Is there some program or script that can find it out?

    In my operating systems class we were shown a picture depicting a hierarchy of memory starting from most expensive and fastest at the top and least expensive and slowest at the bottom. At the very top was registers and underneath it was cache. The professor said that the best place to run programs is in cache. I was wondering why programs can't be run in registers? Also, how can a program load itself into cache? Isn't the cache something that's controlled by the CPU and works automatically without software control?

Next, Open iChat, then select iChat » Preferences and click on the Accounts tab. Click on the + (plus) sign to add a new account, with these settings: * Account Type is Jabber Account * Account name is [email protected], and enter your password * Click the drop-down arrow to reveal Server options. Enter chat.facebook.com as the server name. * Enter 5222 as the port and click Done. Click Done again, and you are good to go. From reading this, it seems that it might be possible to telnet into facebook chat. I tried, but wasn't able to. Is it possible? How?

    To convert an MKV to AVI, I do two things. The first thing I do is this: ffmpeg -i filename.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.avi or this: ffmpeg -i filename.mkv -sameq -acodec copy output.avi Either of these will convert the MKV to an AVI, but the problem is that the video does not play smoothly for some reason. That's fine though, because if I do one more thing it gets fixed: ffmpeg -i output.avi -vcodec mpeg4 -b 4000k -acodec mp2 -ab 320k converted.avi After I do this then the file plays without problem. I had success doing it this way for one file, but then I tried it on another file, and there is a slight, but noticeable loss in video quality. We can use wireshark or other programs to sniff all the packets. By grouping all the secondary connections with the primary one, then we would be able to get a much easier picture of user's primary activities. Is this talking about being able to recognize which websites each of the laptops are connecting to?

    There is a well known WAP that lots of people use. Someone comes in with a laptop equipped with a sniffer. The laptop sniffs people trying to log on to the WAP. It intercepts the connection, and when people try to log on to the WAP, they unknowingly log on through that person's laptop instead. All communication between the WAP and people's laptops go through that person's laptop. That person's laptop is able to block access to certain websites that the WAP would normally allow.

    I'm after a regex that puts spaces around each "-" in a string, eg. 02 jaguar-leopard, tiger-panther 08 would become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 Note that if the "-" already has spaces around it, no changes are to be made, eg. 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 should not become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 The number of hyphens are unknown in advance.   • API numbers don't match on compiled PHP extension

    I'm trying to get GD into my PHP. I recently installed PHP5.3.0 on my system running Mac Leopard using mac ports. It did not come with the gd module. So I downloaded gd, compiled it as an extension module as per http://www.kenior.ch/macintosh/adding-gd-library-for-mac-os-x-leopard, made php.ini point to it, restarted apache etc. But no GD. So in apache error log it says PHP Warning: PHP Startup: gd: Unable to initialize module\nModule compiled with module API=20060613\nPHP compiled with module API=20090115\nThese options need to match\n in Unknown on line 0 So a bit of googling says I should not use the phpize I have before configuring and making these. I should use a new one called phpize5. I surely don't have any such thing. Unless its packed up inside something else in my php5.3. distro. Where do you get it. In Ubuntu I could just run sudo apt-get install php-dev, (apparently) and it would just appear by magic. At least that's what the webpage said. Unfortunately I am running MacOSX version Leopard. How can I build this GD module on Leopard so that it will match the API number in my PHP?

  • Ati X1600 driver problem on Mac

    Hi all, I currently own a 06' Macbook pro 1.1, and since some months I have recurrent problems of displays bug or artifacts. I searched quickly around to see that a lot of other users on Mac (iMac or Macbook pro) also have the same problem due to a problem for the X1600 video card. Apparently it's due to overheating problem, in my case even without warming a lot I have very bad display bugs such as colorful pixel lines, or glitches, and freeze and crash, all of this on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. I found this interesting article here talking about this problem and trying to gather people so that Apple take the serious GPU problem in consideration. In one of the comments, an user said he removed all bundle named with "radeon" and then he had no more problems under Leopard, and seems ot work fine well too on Snow Leopard. I did the same thing, I removed the bundles of the driver, restart, and no more problems, but not more 3D acceleration, which is not an acceptable solution. For those interested, here is the list of files to be deleted to stop having this problem. /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle I would like to know if there is a way to fix this using other drivers if that's possible or by creating a group to force Apple to make a replacement program in place.   • Encoding over SSH Issues

    I have a Linux machine and a Windows machine, both using Vim with the Powerline plugin. They both work great with patched fonts. Next, I want to SSH onto an OSX 10.6 machine and also use the Powerline in the terminal with Vim. However, I get weird symbols with normal mode ("^^B" in one area) and fancy mode ("~@" and "~B" spread throughout the bar. I thought this mixup was an encoding issue, but when I look at Putty's encoding it is using UTF-8 and the same with the Ubuntu terminal. Additionally, on the OSX machine, "locale" returns "en_US.UTF-8" for all variables (I set it to do that in order to troubleshoot). However, the symbols are still showing. I am using a patched font (Inconsolata, the same one as the Ubuntu terminal) for the OSX terminal, so I am stumped. Is there a missing component to this equation? Are there additional problems that can arise from SSH encoding? On the OSX end, additionally, these same symbols appear, so it may not even be related to SSH and therefore I'm totally lost.

  • Route specific network traffic through vpn in virtualbox guest

    I am running OSX with a windows server 2008 guest in Virtualbox. My goal is to route some of the network traffic in the host through the server guest. This is because the win2008 server has a VPN connection to my workplace using a Smartcard solution which can not operate on OSX. My current set-up is like this: OSX (Host): connected to the internet via en01 Win2008 (Guest): connected to the internet using NAT (lan1 in guest) has a SSTP VPN connection to my workplace is connected to the guest using an Host Only Adapter vboxnet0 (LAN2 in guest) The important part is about the host (OSX). Primarily I want all network traffic to just go through en01. However, all traffic which can only be accessed through the VPN must go through the guest and through the VPN. I have one specific FQDN which can only be accessed through the VPN (say corp.mycompany.com). I do not know much about networking. I thought I would be able to get it to work by bridging together LAN2 and LAN1 but this didn't seem to work this: http://archives.aidanfindlater.com/blog/2010/02/03/use-vpn-for-specific-sites-on-mac-os-x/ using a loopback adapter on WinXP (when I did not have win2008 yet, but this doesn't work because I can't create a PPTP connection) And I've also read about Routing and Remote Access but I have no idea on how to use this. Can someone help me in the right direction?
