  • C# Pragma to suppress break on thrown error

    First off I run my applications with exceptions thrown on any error (handled or not). Second I am using a TypeConverter to convert from a user input string to the actual object. Third TypeConverter offers no TryConvert method so I'm stuck using exceptions for validation, using this rather ugly bit of code here: try { this._newValue = null; #pragma Magic_SuppressBreakErrorThrown System.Exception this._newValue = this.Converter.ConvertFromString(this._textBox.Text); #pragma Magic_ResumeBreakErrorThrown System.Exception this.HideInvalidNotification(); } catch (Exception exception) { if (exception.InnerException is FormatException) { this.ShowInvalidNotification(this._textBox.Text); } else { throw; } } I'm finding it rather distracting to have VS break execution every-time I type the - of -1, or some other invalid character. I could use something similar to this but not all the types I'm converting to have a TryParse method either. I'm hoping there may be some way to disable breaking for the section of code within the try without changing my exception settings.

  • Custom HTTPHandler causing caching or session issues?

    So i have a custom CMS running under .Net 3.5 written entirely in c#. The engine is optimized to render for mobile devices, but also server to normal web browsers. It also supports cookieless sessions. Great... I've chosen not to cache anything (including browser data) in order to control the rendering completely from data. This has been all good until lately. The engine implements a basic login function that simply logs the user state within a session object. The behavior is rather strange. User will click through the site no problem. Then login. The login will either go through successfully or just redisplay the login screen, suggesting a cached page being returned or redisplayed... If the login is successful the concurrent page hits will switch arbitrarily between logged in and logged out state... Also suggesting either the session state is not accessible or a cached page being returned. I have debugged the hell out of the thing.... including using fiddler and the like. When debugging the behavior disappears. Huh?     I was introduced to the Star Rating widget for jQuery UI: http://orkans-tmp.22web.net/star_rating/ I was originally using this one: http://www.fyneworks.com/jquery/star-rating/ Is there any difference between using the two? Well trying to use the jquery UI one, I can't get the input buttons to show up as stars.   • Publishing toolchain

    Hello all, I have a book project which I'd like to start sooner than later. This would follow an agile-like publishing workflow, i.e: publish early and often. It is meant to be self-publsihed by me and I'm not really looking to paper-publish it, even though we never know. If I weren't a geek, I'd probably have already started writting in Word or any other WYSIWYG tool and just export to PDF. However, we know it is not the best solution, and emacs rules my text-editing life, so, the output format should be as simple as possible and be text-based. I've thought about the following options: 1) Use orgmode and export to PDF; 2) Use markdown mode and export to PDF; 3) Use something similar to what the guys @ Pragmatic Progammers do: A XML + XSLT + LaTeX. More complex, but much more control over the style. Any other ideas / references ? I want to start writting as soon as possible. In fact, I already have a draft in an org-formatted file. However, I do want to have and use the full power of LaTex later on to format it the way I want and make it look fabulous :) Thanks in advance, Marcelo.

  • Memory leaks with UIWebView and NSURL: already spent several days trying to solve them

    I have already found a lot of information about how to solve memory leaks for iPhone Obj C code. The last two leaks keep me puzzled, I'm probably overlooking something. Maybe you can spot it. Instruments reports 2 leaks for the following code (part of a UIViewController subclass): (1) UIWebView *webView = [[UIWebView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, self.view.bounds.size.width, self.view.bounds.size.height - LOWER_VERT_WINDOW_MARGIN)]; (2) webView.scalesPageToFit = YES; (3) webView.dataDetectorTypes = UIDataDetectorTypeNone; (4) (5) NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:self.fullPathFileName isDirectory:NO]; (6) NSMutableURLRequest *urlRequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:url]; (7) [webView loadRequest:urlRequest]; (8) [urlRequest release], urlRequest = nil; (9) [self.view addSubview:webView]; (10) [webView release], webView = nil; Instruments claims 128 bytes are leaking in line 1, as well as 256 bytes in line 4. No idea if it means line 3 or line 5. Does anybody have a clue what I'm overlooking?

    I'm going to give an example of using System.Data.SQLite.DLL which is a mixed assembly with unmanaged code: If I execute this : var assembly= Assembly.LoadFrom("System.Data.SQLite.DLL") No exceptions are thrown, but if I do this : var rawAssembly = File.ReadAllBytes("System.Data.SQLite.DLL"); var assembly = Assembly.Load(rawAssembly); The CLR throws a FileLoadException with "Unverifiable code failed policy check. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131402)". Let's say I'm trying to load this assembly on a child AppDomain, how can I customize the AppDomain's security to allow me pass the policy check?

  • Google App Engine: JDO does the job, JPA does not

    I have setup a project using both Jdo and Jpa. I used Jpa Annotation to Declare my Entity. Then I setup my testCases based on LocalTestHelper (from Google App Engine Documentation). When I run the test, a call to makePersistent of Jdo:PersistenceManager is perfectly OK; a call to persist of Jpa:EntityManager raised an error: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Type ("org.seamoo.persistence.jpa.model.ExampleModel") is not that of an entity but needs to be for this operation at org.datanucleus.jpa.EntityManagerImpl.assertEntity(EntityManagerImpl.java:888) at org.datanucleus.jpa.EntityManagerImpl.persist(EntityManagerImpl.java:385) Caused by: org.datanucleus.exceptions.NoPersistenceInformationException: The class "org.seamoo.persistence.jpa.model.ExampleModel" is required to be persistable yet no Meta-Data/Annotations can be found for this class. Please check that the Meta-Data/annotations is defined in a valid file location. at org.datanucleus.ObjectManagerImpl.assertClassPersistable(ObjectManagerImpl.java:3894) at org.datanucleus.jpa.EntityManagerImpl.assertEntity(EntityManagerImpl.java:884) ... 27 more How can it be the case?   • Optional non-system type parameters

    C#4.0 obviously brings optional parameters (which I've been waiting for, for quite some time). However it seems that because only system types can be const that I cannot use any class/struct which I have created, as an optional param. Is there a some way which allows me to use a more complex type as an optional parameter. Or is this one of the realities that one must just live with?

    When I first found out that Mercurial tracked files and not directories, I was a bit disappointed. (This means you can't represent an empty directory in the repo.) However, it doesn't seem to be an issue in practice, and makes some things a tad easier for me. How about other SCM systems? (Edit this post to add them.) What advantages or disadvantages have you found by not tracking directories? (Each one separately in an answer, please.) Do track directories: Subversion Bazaar/bzr (add one!) Do NOT track directories: Mercurial/hg git (add one!)

    For those of us that like to use the graphical version of Vim or Emacs, instead of the console version, which version do you recommend? For Vim, there's Mac OS X Vim, MacVim, Vim-Cocoa. For Emacs, CarbonEmacs, XEmacs, and Aquamacs. Are there more? Which of these are ready for prime-time? If it's a tough call, what are the trade-offs? Are all of these still being maintained?   • Unable to use JConsole with Tomcat running as windows service

    I am running tomcat 6.0.18 as a windows service. In the service applet the jvm is configured default, i.e. it is using jvm.dll of the JRE. I am trying to monitor this application with JConsole but cannot connect to it locally. I added the parameter -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote (which works when starting tomcat with the start.bat script). But the jvm does not seem to pick up the parameter.

  • Message Driven Bean with Java Message Queue down

    I have the following problem deploying my application. It uses JMS and a remote openMQ for communication between servers. The problem is that the connection is not fully reliable so it can be up or down. For reconnecting I set the jms reconnect glassfish property so it reconnects if at some moment the connection gets lost. The problem arises when i try to deploy the application and there is no connection. It looks like it keeps retrying the connection but the application does not finish deployment until connection is available. Is it possible to configure it in any way that the deployment continues even if there is no connection and keeps retrying until there is connection available? Thanks a lot.

  • PHP Explode with an Unicode character as separator

    XPDFs pdftotext converts pdf to text and outputs it at command line level. If needed it inserts PageBreaks between the pages as specified in TextOutputDev.cc: eopLen = uMap->mapUnicode(0x0c, eop, sizeof(eop)); This Unicode symbol is encoding independent, -enc ASCII7 wouldn't change it. I'm currently willing to use PHP for converting and splitting the PDF file into several TXT pages for database storage. However, the following function does work, but takes twice as long as a conversion of the whole book in one time. for($i = 1; $i <= $pages[0]; $i++) $page[$i] = shell_exec('/usr/bin/pdftotext sample.pdf -f '.$i.' -l '.$i.' -'); How am I supposed to explode(0x0c, $wholePDF) with an Unicode character as separator? Currently, page[$i] doesn't seem to retrieve those weird Unicode PageBreak characters from the shell_exec(). I tried several headers for encoding (UTF-8 especially) but it didn't work out so far.

  • Duration of Excessive GC Time in "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded"

    Occasionally, somewhere between once every 2 days to once every 2 weeks, my application crashes in a seemingly random location in the code with: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded. If I google this error I come to this SO question and that lead me to this piece of sun documentation which expains: The parallel collector will throw an OutOfMemoryError if too much time is being spent in garbage collection: if more than 98% of the total time is spent in garbage collection and less than 2% of the heap is recovered, an OutOfMemoryError will be thrown. This feature is designed to prevent applications from running for an extended period of time while making little or no progress because the heap is too small. If necessary, this feature can be disabled by adding the option -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit to the command line. Which tells me that my application is apparently spending 98% of the total time in garbage collection to recover only 2% of the heap. But 98% of what time? 98% of the entire two weeks the application has been running? 98% of the last millisecond? I'm trying to determine a best approach to actually solving this issue rather than just using -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit but I feel a need to better understand the issue I'm solving.

  • Hiding a UINavigationController's UIToolbar during viewWillDisappear:

    I've got an iPhone application with a UITableView menu. When a row in the table is selected, the appropriate view controller is pushed onto the application's UINavigationController stack. My issue is that the MenuViewController does not need a toolbar, but the UIViewControllers which are pushed onto the stack do. Each UIViewController that gets pushed calls setToolbarHidden:animated: in viewDidAppear:. To hide the toolbar, I call setToolbarHidden:animated: in viewWillDisappear:. Showing the toolbar works, such that when the pushed view appears the toolbar slides up and the view resizes correctly. However, when the back button is pressed the toolbar slides down but the view does not resize. This means that there's a black strip along the bottom of the view as the other view transitions in. I've tried adding the toolbar's height to the height of the view prior to hiding the toolbar, but this causes the view to be animated during the transition so that there's still a black bar. I realise I can manage my own UIToolbar, but I'd like to use UINavigationControllers built in UIToolbar for convenience. This forum post mentions the same issue, but no workaround is mentioned.

Any Microsoft® Expression product Any Adobe Creative Suite product Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or later I've got a boxed, retail copy of Visual Studio 2003, so it appears I've missed that particular boat. On the other hand, I've got an MSDN Professional subscription, which includes Visual Studio. Does this copy of Visual Studio entitle me to upgrade pricing on Expression Studio? Given that you can't get Visual Studio without an MSDN subscription, I figure it does, but I can't find anything definitive.
