• Web based file search in the lan?

  I would like to search files in my lan easily. (over 500k files on SMB shares, it would take ages with other ways) I mean, i just need to do a quick search on file names, i don't care content indexing at all, as most of my files are in a proprietary format, and the file name is explicative enough. But, date range filters are a must for me. I just need a quick search like voidtools' everything can do, but in a network way The files are on a WHS box (lol, Videos and Music share names are not appropriate for a company, but a license for that win2003-based os is cheaper than an xp home one!) I tried: Lansearch pro: it is not good for me, as i need a quick index Network Search Engine: it would be perfect, but does not offer a date range filter Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, but it is horrible! First, does NOT index filenames, and then, my Core2Duo is not powerful enough to run it smoothly. Google Desktop with a proxy on localhost to make it run on the lan, but i don't like the hacked result. The preinstalled Windows Search 4.0 but it sucks totally in choosing the relevance of data - uninstalled Docco... what's that? I am considering to try: Ibm omnifind DocFetcher (can it work as a client? did not investigated yet) Strigi (it looks like that it can work as a client, right?) Any ideas/suggestions?

• Is there a way to tag MP3 the way you can do with Photos in Live Photo Gallery or Picazza?

  I really do love the way you can tag pictures in Windows Live Photo Gallery. I find it incredibly useful to be able to tag the same picture with the tag "Cancun" and have it been automatically included when I look for the tag "Beach", "Trips" and "Fun Pic", since its a child tag of the former and also has a tag for the later. I also like that I can look for rating in the pics. On the other side, tagging MP3 has always been a pain in the ass, because I just find it to hard to classify music! Is it pop? techno? techno-pop? rock? indie-rock? indie-post-classic-pop-techno? I hate how ID3 just have one tag for genre, so I've tried tricks like putting all the genres I think it fits into, and then having lists in Winamp (which I dont use anymore) that filter out words in the ID3 tags (ie, Tag: Genre, Contains: Rock = rock list). But then, what about moods? I want to be able to tag my songs in genres and in moods, you know, happy, concentrate/work, party, romantic (wink wink), etc. Is there any way to do this, preferably in a way in which tags could carry on to other music players? • DNS NAmeserver Aname and cname records

  Hi - I am inexperienced in the configuration of DNS and have an issue with dominan hosting set up. I have two domains 'www.mydomain1.com' and 'www.mydomain2.com', with mydomain2 pointed at the same place as mydomain1. The domains were passed to me recently by the person who previoulsy controlled them. I have an account with fasthosts in the uk. When I accepted the domains I could not access the DNS settings and enquired with fasthosts as to why. The replied saying 'The delegate hosting option for both domains were enabled and this is the reason why you were unable to find the option to edit the advanced DNS records. I have now disabled the delegate hosting option so you can now edit the advanced DNS records for both domains in your account.' When i log into the fasthost control panel now i can access the DNS controls but both domains have no A Record of Cname record set up. I am concerned that fasthosts have blatted the previous Nameserver entries and set me up on theirs but not added any record. 'www.mydomain1.com' currently still works but 'www.mydomain2.com' does not find the site anymore. i am worried i will lose mydomain1 to as teh dns changes filter through the system. my webhosting is at 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' and this is where I want both domains to point. Any advice would be much appreciated. one thing which is confusing me is that because I am on a shared server I have to put 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' to get to my site rather than just 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'. The form on fasthosts for the aname record only allows an IP to be entered - does it add the mydomain1.com/ onto the end itself? Thanks for any help given - I'm quite worried about this David

• Postfix does not work after setting server hostname from plesk

  I have recently set my server hostname from localhost.localdomain to xx.mydomain.com from the plesk control panel. However after doing this change postfix has stopped working, I tried restarting and regenerating the config files but to no avail. I am not familiar with postfix but I believe there is a setting to be changed in main.cf. Here are the relevant errors I receive: postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system postfix/master: daemon started -- version 2.8.4, configuration /etc/postfix postfix/cleanup: fatal: host/service localhost/12768 not found: Name or service not known postfix/pickup: warning: maildrop/E5559996219: error writing 4FA2C996217: queue file write error postfix/master: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/cleanup pid 15334 exit status 1 postfix/master: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/cleanup: bad command startup -- throttling Any ideas? EDIT Setting it back to localhost.localdomain makes it work again. The only references to localhost/12768 I can find in main.cf are: smtpd_milters = inet:localhost:12768 non_smtpd_milters = inet:localhost:12768 Should something be changed here? These two lines stay the same when I change the hostname. EDIT If I comment out the two mail filter lines (the ones shown above) and restart, postfix works with the new hostname. However this is obviously not the ideal solution...

• Remote Desktop *from* Windows 2008 R2 Server

  Summary: how do I create an RDC connection from a Windows 2008 server to another server? Our client will only allow us to connect to their server via a static IP address (which is fair enough), but unfortunately as we're a very small company we don't have one in the office. As a work around, we had the connection working through our old Windows 2003 server (dynamic-cloud from 1and1). .. however we have just rebuilt the server to run under Windows 2008 R2 (don't ask, but it was necessary), and now I simply cannot get the connection working. I have added an "Outbound Rule" to Windows Firewall with Advanced Security (TCP, All local ports, 3389 remote port - I have also tried the other way around). I have added a packet filter IP security rule with the same details. The 1and1 firewall rules (through their online control panel) allows for 3389 TCP and UDP. But it is simply not connecting (yes, the server is definitely on and able to accept connections) with the general error of... Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access to the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network Is there anything obvious I've missed - or something I can use to find out where the request is being blocked? The new server is using the exact same IP address as before, so I don't believe that would be an issue. Unless it's trying to use an IPv6 address rather than the old IPv4 address that it was before? I apologise that I am not a network person by trade, but I know more than anybody else in my office!!

• How can I connect integrated webcam with virtualbox

  I am trying to use a Windows XP VM for VirtualBox on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have tried the usual attaching USB device but I get an error saying "USB device is busy with previous request". My webcam is not active in any applications and this happens after a clean reboot of the host, the guest, and VirtualBox. Here are the details: Host -HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC (stock) -Windows 8.1 -AMD A10-5750M APU -HP Truevision HD (integrated webcam) VM I got the VM here: http://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools VirtualBox -VirtualBox 4.3.12 installed -VirtualBox Extension pack installed -Guest additions are installed for 4.3.12 -Enable USB Controller is checked -It does not matter if enable 2.0 controller is checked or not -It does not matter if a USB device filter is set up for the webcam or not -Here is the error message: Failed to attach the USB device DDFEQ01G45BFBV HP Truevision HD [0004] to the virtual machine IE8 - WinXP. • IPTables configuration for Localhost

  I have a problem in connecting a JIRA instance running on a cloud server to an instance of MySQL running on the same box. I have configured it previously using quite a few iptables rules, but it seems overly broad/terribly inprecise. I want access to several of localhosts ports from the local machine, but deny it from all other accounts. Currently, my /etc/iptables.rules file looks like: *filter :INPUT DROP [223:17779] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [10161:1120819] # SSH Access -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -i eth0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT # Apache2 Access for connecting to Tomcat on port 8080 -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT # MySQL -I INPUT -i lo -p tcp -m tcp --dport mysql -j ACCEPT COMMIT However, this doesn't allow me to log in when I try logging in; it just hangs on: #> mysql -u root -p -h 127.0.0.1 The Tomcat servlet container starts throwing all kinds of exceptions, as well. This is a more general problem, as I need to enable things like accessing the shutdown port for the Tomcat container, but I need to at least get the MySQL part ironed out first, without the ugliness I was originally trying. • LDAP Authentication fails with 500 or 401 depending on bind for Apache2

  I'm setting up LDAP authentication for our Subversion repository hosted through Apache on a RHEL 5 system. I run into two different issues when I try to authenticate against Active Directory. <Location /svn/> Dav svn SvnParentPath /srv/subversion SVNListParentPath On AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthLDAPBindDN "cn=userfoo,ou=Service Accounts,ou=User Accounts,dc=my,dc=example,dc=com" AuthLDAPBindPassword "mypass" AuthLDAPUrl "ldap://my.example.com:389/ou=User Accounts,dc=my,dc=example,dc=com?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=user)" NONE Require valid-user </Location> If I use the above configuration it continually prompts me with the Basic prompt and I have to eventually select Cancel, which returns a 401 (Authorization Required). If I comment out the bind parts it returns 500 (Internal Server Error), griping that authentication failed: [Mon Nov 02 12:00:00 2009] [warn] [client x.x.x.x] [10744] auth_ldap authenticate: user myuser authentication failed; URI /svn [ldap_search_ext_s() for user failed][Operations error] When I perform the bind using ldapsearch and filter for a simple attribute it returns correctly: ldapsearch -h my.example.com -p 389 -D "cn=userfoo,ou=Service Accounts,ou=User Accounts,dc=my,dc=example,dc=com" -b "ou=User Accounts,dc=my,dc=example,dc=com" -w - "&(objectClass=user)(cn=myuser)" sAMAccountName Unfortunately I have no control or insight into the AD part of the system, only the RHEL server.   I have a CentOS (5.7 Final) system on which I already have Apache (2.2.3) installed. • Is there a free XML viewer to do "pivot tables"

  I have an *.xml file on a PC running Windows XP, with a structure something like... <movies id="my movies" <movie name="Unforgiven" <people star="Clint Eastwood" director="Clint Eastwood"/> </movie> <movie name="A Fistful of Dollars" <people star="Clint Eastwood" director="Sergio Leone"/> </movie> <movie name="J Edgar" <people star="Leonardo DiCaprio" director="Clint Eastwood"/> </movie> </movies> I want to open this file in a viewer utility which will show one line per movie, filtered by a condition such as director="Clint Eastwood", including the relevant value for movie name on each line. Note - that's just an example. My actual file has thousands of lines, each possibly several hundred bytes long, and there are many more levels and named values. The important thing is I want to apply a filter for a specified value of some field at some level. And I want to see one line for every case where that value occurs, showing the values for any fields I specify, even if they're stored at higher levels. I may be mistaken in saying what I want is a "pivot table" - I don't know what I should call it.

  Hello everyone, Lately I had to reinstall my development site on my ubuntu machine since my system crashed after an os update. 4 days later my site is still not running as it should. Whenever i do an action which has in it an action on a database, it stops working. • Not playing .mov files in WMP, not loading .mov files in Windows Live Movie Maker. What am I missing?

  My friend needs to create a video and she has some source files that are .MOV format. I assume they are h.264. She can view the files with QuickTime. She has a laptop running Vista, and a just-downloaded version of Windows Live Movie Maker (which I'll call LMM for short). LMM shows an 'X' icon when she tries to add one of these files to it. My machine runs Windows 7 Pro, and a slightly earlier build of LMM and has no problems editing video with these source files. I assume she's missing a codec but what can I tell her? I've looked at the answer that mentions a QuickTime DirectShow Source Filter Plugin. It mentions only playback through WMP, not editing via LMM, but is that what she needs? I didn't have to load anything like that. That project's now done (she punted and used iMovie on a Mac). But I did gain another clue. She could play a 720p .MOV file, but these were 1920x1080 files.

• Managing multiple IMAP accounts in Thunderbird

  I've been using Thunderbird for years without issues with 20+ pop3 accounts. I'm moving over to imap which will enable me to keep copies of the emails locally and on the server whilst keeping everthing synchronised. However I'm looking for the best way to manage multiple imap accounts on Thunderbird. Currently I have a filter that copies all the emails into a central inbox and into seperate local folders. The reason for this is I go through my inbox daily and delete all emails that don't require any action. I move any emails that require action to my "action" imap account folder. This way I can syncronise all the emails that require action across multiple computers (and mobile devices). This technique is my implemantion of the GTD or Getting things Done philosophy. I also copy over each email into seperate local folders. The reason I do this is just in case any emails on the imap accounts get deleted, or something drastic happens on the server which means I lose all the emails. My business partner has access to some of these emails and still uses pop3 (with "leave copy on server" checked), but I know sometimes Thunderbird can still delete emails off the server sometimes. The problem with the above is that thunderbird gives me the dreaded error dialogue saying that the emails cannot be filtered due to another process. I find the folder list in Thunderbird hard to manage. Here is a screenshot of part of my folder list- as you can see it's a bit of a complicated list and not easy to manage: What would be the best way of me managing multiple imap accounts whilst allowing me to have copies put in a central folder and emails in local folders? It would be useful if people think this is necessary, as perhaps there is a betterway? How do people manage multiple imap accounts in a way that allows them to keep on top of actionable emails? I'd be interested in how others manage this. I've never used the Thunderbird-based client "Postbox", does this handle multiple imaps better?

• Libraries merged folder views

  So I pretty much love the Windows 7 Libraries feature, and saw one use for them that I thought would be perfect, but I can't seem to manage it. Basically, a merged view of different folder structures. Suppose I make a new generic library and add three locations to it: C:\Test\, D:\Test\ and D:\temp\Test\. Now, these may look somewhat okay as long as there are no duplicates in these folders. (It wants to group them based on the included directory, which one can work around by looking on google - I don't have the precise trick on hand I am afraid.) But when you get collisions and, say, two of those directories have a Sub directory in them, stuff becomes unusable (assuming Arrange by: Folder view). You'll have multiple folders listed named Sub, which is pretty useless when looking for data. I want folders to get 'merged', which ought to be possible somehow since it can create these merged views based on artist, album etc in other views. So all subdirectories that are double (and recursively checking for doubles inside those, etc) ought to be merged for as far the View is concerned. If files have a collision, I don't really care what happens - hide one, show both, filter out duplicates, whatever. (Although an option would be nice...) Anyhow, is there anyone who knows how to get such a 'merged folder structure' functionality for Libraries? It would be really useful for me.

  Hello, I am new to servers, and I was following this guide and it failed on the first command instructed. • Cisco ASA dropping IPsec VPN between istself and CentOS server

  Currently we're trying to set up an IPsec VPN between a Cisco ASA Version 8.0(4) and a CentOS Linux server. The tunnel comes up successfully, but for some reason that we can't figure out, the firewall is dropping packets from the VPN. • Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

  I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

• WEIRD netstat behavior on Windows XP re: www.partypoker.com

  I really don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I would really appreciate if someone that is more savvy on Windows XP (Professional) could help me out. For background, I am a 10+ years programmer, so I'm not a total idiot, but I am far from an expert on TCP/IP, etc, and this has me totally confused. When I do a netstat (on Windows XP) I seem to always get a huge amount of www.partypoker.com connections and I can't figure out where they are coming from. A netstat -o shows me that some are coming from PID xxx, which is firefox, but if I kill it, the connections still remain. Some are coming from PID 0, which makes no sense to me. SECOND PROBLEM: One would think you could edit the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file to block this, but it seems like my machine is ignoring the hosts file! (I have tried with the DNS client service both enabled and disabled, same result). So I just rebooted, killed all my normal programs, and I can't seem to reproduce the problem. If I was a paranoid person, I would think there was some sort of an intelligent trojan running. I am running Windows XP Pro, Kaspersky Antivirus, ccCleaner, and am fully up to date on Windows Update. What gives???? So, I guess my questions are: 1. Is anyone else seeing these wird connections to partypoker.com? 2. Why isn't my hosts filter working? 3. Is there some utility I can run to find out whats happening? I've tried autoruns.exe from sysinternals but don't see anything interesting. Am I the only one with this problem? If there are any additional things you need me to run, let me know.

I had to remove the cache directory as I was testing something. Remade it, re-set permissions and found that eAccelerator was no longer creating cache files within the folder. I thought it might be down to ownership rights on the folder so chown'd it apache.apache and this made no difference. I recreated the directory in /var/cache instead and editted php.ini to point to the new cache dir location, chmod'd, chown'd etc. and still eAccelerator is not creating any of the cache files in the directory (just empty). Could someone suggest what I might be doing incorrectly here. I've read through numerous pages to try and troubleshoot the issue to no avail. Any help appreciated.

  I have Apache (on Windows Server) set up to authenticate one directory through Active Directory. It returns a 500 server to me.   I am having the toughest time sending large attachments, everywhere I have checked my file size limit for send/receive is 100mb but yet users are unable to receive files even at the size of 14mb. I'm using a spam filter (Appriver) and have worked with there support for a very long time, we see the following errors in logs 13:32:40.260 4 SMTP-000036([myserverIP]) rsp: 354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF> 13:33:41.038 3 SMTP-000033([myserverIP]) write failed. • Choosing the right e-mail client

  Hi all, I'm currently using Outlook 2007 (under windows 7), but I much prefer free software (open source being the best of course), so I thought I'd ask for expert advice here. I thought it might be easier if I included a small "wanted list": I receive about 15 to 30 e-mails every day, but I have large archives (10'000 emails), which I frequently need to access. I usually open and close my mail program many times, so I'd like it to start pretty fast I cannot use an online mailbox, because I have too many email addresses (about 5: 1 for work, 1 for home, 1 semi-private, 1 for specific emails, and 1 for newletters By order of importance, the things I'd like my mail client to be able to: Efficiently categorize e-mails. Until now, I've mostly been using Outlook folders, because filtering by tags was not easy, but I'd rather one large list of mails, neatly tagged so I can easily filter. I'd love being able to select mails by tags (eg in a click or too (could be a tab) show all mails tagged with "software") Create "tagging rules", such as "if the mail was sent to this address, add this tag", or "if the body contains ..., add that tag" Sync contacts with Gmail, handle tasks (syncing with toodledo would be awesome), possibly provide a calendar Create e-mail templates, signatures... Other ideas: A timeline, scripting support, being able to import MS Outlook emails, provide a nice backup format... Thanks for sharing ideas and suggestions!
