    If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”.     I am going to be using some DSQUERY/DSMOVE scripts to clean up my AD Domin. One option is to move inactive objects to a OU that has restrictive GPOs applied to it. Something like: DSQUERY computer -inactive 10 | DSMOVE -newparent <distinguished name of target OU> My question is what value defines an object, both user and computer, as "inactive" for a period of time? Is it the last time a computer was logged on to for computer accounts, and for users is it the last time that the user account logged on to a computer? But what if, say for example, I had a web server that wasn't rebooted and or logged into for a couple of months but remain powered on and functioning as normal, would it be defined as "inactive" where as technically it's still serving web pages and so on?     I want to know how to make Windows the default boot OS in Ubuntu 11.10, how to make Windows boot first on GRUB2, specifically for Windows 7, which is my current version. I know that are some tutorials about this, but it seems that I made a mistake, so I'm asking. Luckily nothing serious happened. I didn't lose my data. The difference between my question and the tutorials is that the tutorials are from older version. Sorry for any disturbs and redundancy of the question. I'll love it better for a GUI app that making easy the boot. P.S: I forgot to say the version of my OS's I am running Windows 7 Home Premium X64 bit Ubuntu 11.10 X64 bit I hope this will make understand better because I now saw it a tutorial that for 64 bit versions Startup-Manager doesn't work.

  • Should be simple: existing laptop with local user and outlook 2007 migrate on same computer to domain user with outlook 2007 emails intact

    I have Dell Laptop with windows 7 64 bit and for the last year it's been just a machine with an account like: machine\john there are files in folders and stuff in c:\users\john and john uses outlook 2007 as a pop3 client and has identifiable local appdata pst files. Now I installed a server and want to have everything be domain-centric so I added this laptop to the domain with admin credentials and then logged in as a domain user as: domain\john.smith Now I want to duplicate machine\john (outlook emails mostly) to domain\john.smith. In the past I used the Files and Settings Xfer Wizard and done. I tried that here and it crunched away for a while, made the file, but the restore had no effect - it ran for a while, had a progress bar, but it's like nothing happened at all afterwards. I've rebooted the machine, logged in as domain administrator as the first user to log on after the restart and tried: c:\users\john xcopy c:\users\john c:\users\john.smith /V /C /F /H /K /Y /E ...and it copies some of it, but when it gets to c:\users\john.smith\appdata\local\application data it chokes "Access denied, unable to create directory" I also tried logging in as domain\john.smith and copying the entire directory that the PSTs are in from machine\john and a lot of the mail was there when I launched outlook after replacing the PSTs, but not all of them??? I got errors about files in use when doing this method, which I figure must be why not all the old emails are in the inbox?... There must be some extremely simple way to do what must be a very common requirement. Any guidance appreciated.

    I have a report that has ~1k columns and ~17k rows and I'm trying to render it to Excel 2007 with SSRS 2008 R2 Nov CTP. SSRS team members have mentioned in multiple places that Excel 2007 format is included in 2008 R2, for instance: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/69545568-73cb-4f4c-8f35-44472ba6d013 Now, it's certainly possible that it just hasn't made it into the product yet (at least as of Nov CTP), and if that's the case, that would be good to know, too (and ideally when it would be in the product).     I've seen tutorials articles and posts on how to build datawarehouses with star and snowflakes schemas, denormalization of OLTP databases fact and dimension tables and so on. Also seen comments like: Star schemas are for datamarts, at best. There is absolutely no way a true enterprise data warehouse could be represented in a star schema, or snowflake either. I want to create a database that will server for reporting services and maybe (if that isn't enough) install analisys services and extract reports and data from cubes. My question was : Is it really necesarry to redesign my current database and follow the star/snowflake schemas with fact and dimension tables ? Thank you

  • IPv6 in a Small Business

    I’ve been tasked to identify a new server and IT equipment for the company I work for (employees <20). I’m looking at getting a SBS 2011 Standard box. My Question is: Apart from ensuring that our router is IPv6 compliant, is there anything else I need to do/investigate to ensure that we won’t have IPv6 related problems in the future? When investigating this I can only find references to DNS Mangers etc. The SBS 2011 box will be used for exchange and remote log in access – it won’t be hosting any websites. Also will VOIP phone systems be affected by IPv6? (We are running a rather old VOIP system, would that need to be updated?

  • Problem in booting Windows Vista after repairing using a boot repair disk

    Been using Vista and I recently installed Ubuntu 11 in a separate hard disk(in BIOS, this hard disk was set for the 'Boot from' option)..Apart from the partitions used for Ubuntu, there are 2 more partitions(NTFS) in that hard disk..Then I installed Windows 7 on one of those partitions (just to see which Windows operating system I'd like to keep on using, along with Ubuntu)..But after installing Windows 7, the OS selection menu didn't appear anymore and had to fix it using the Boot-Repair-Disk... It kinda worked.. Now the OS selection menu is displayed..   • Why would the servers network type change from Private to Public?

    Just found a fault with a server, other users have had problems connecting to it. The setting on the network card had changed from Private (domain) network to Public (the other option being Home). The switch to the network interface would have caused the firewall to block a lot of normal functions. I am guessing that since the event log showed no reason for the change that it might be due to a complete shutdown we had recently where someone powered up the machines, however the domain controllers might not have been booted up first. Any confirmation that this might be the case?

  • How do you dual boot Windows 7/8 seperatly with GRUB?

    I installed the beta version of Windows 8 and re-installed GRUB. When I boot my computer and select Windows 7, I get the new Windows 8 booting screen asking to boot between either Windows 7 or 8. If I choose Windows 7, my computer then restarts and I have to select Windows 7 again in order to boot into 7. But if I choose Windows 8 it boots right up. I understand I can choose which OS to boot by default, but I want my GRUB options to be the only way to choose between OS's. So my question is, how can I set this up so that when I click on Windows 7, I go there, and when I select Windows 8, I boot 8?

  • Web & SQL Hosting 32 vs. 16 GB of ram

    I'm in the market for a new dedicated host for my website. My question is I can pay more to upgrade to 32GB of RAM, but it seems overkill for my website right now, in fact, 16GB seems a little overkill. However, I run a lot of pretty intense full text searches for my site. I'm wondering if SQL Server would benefit, or could it be configured to use the 32 GB of RAM if I purchase the additional to help speed things up? I am assuming that most of my latency is caused by disk I/O and that for the extra money spent on RAM, I might not see any improvement in overall speed?

    When switching from MSVS 6 to MSVS 2008, what major differences should I look for when testing the software? I'm coming from more of a QA perspective. We have two programs that work closely together that were originally compiled in Visual C++ 6. Now one of the programs has been compiled in Visual C++ 2008 in order to use a specific CD writing routine. The other program is still compiled under MSVS 6. My manager is very concerned with this change and wants me to run tests specific to this change. Since I deal more with QA and less with development, I really have no idea where to start. I've looked for differences between the two, but nothing has given me a clear direction as far as testing is concerned. Any suggestions would be helpful.

  • vb.net : is it possible to connect to sql server 2008 via odbc but not through vb.net code?

    I'm supporting an old vb.net program whose database it connected to was moved from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. Is there a setting on SQL Server 2008 which will allow ODBC connections to access the database but not allow VB.NET to connect to it programmatically? the error i keep receiving in the app is: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server) however I can connect to it when I create a system dsn to the sql server instance and through VS2005's Tools Connect to Database.   • What should I do to recompile my static library (originally written in VS6) in visual studio 2008?

    There is a static library A with c++ classes wrapped by a C API in VS6. I developed a static library B in VS6 using callbacks from library A. The library B is used by the program C (commercial software) as a "user defined library" and linked to produce the program D. Questions: 1) When program C uses VS 6 it works, should it work fine with VS 2008? Because it doesn't. 2) When I tried to recompile library B in VS 2008 it gave me a .lib file with only 28KB, and the old one had more than 2MB. Is it ok? What Am I probably doing wrong?     My company produces a cross-platform server application which loads its configuration from user-editable configuration files. On Windows, config files are locked down at Setup time to allow reading by all users but restrict editing to Administrators only. Unfortunately, on Windows Server 2008, even local administrators no longer have admin privileges (because of UAC) unless they're running an elevated app. My question is: if a Windows Server 2008 admin wants to edit an admins-only config file, how does he normally do it? Is he forced to use a text editor which is smart enough to auto-elevate when elevation is needed, like Windows Explorer does in response to access denied errors? Or is there something that we can do in our app (e.g. in ACLs we lay down at setup time) which signal apps (or explorer) that elevation is needed before editing the file or which otherwise make our app friendlier to admins running on modern Windows OS's?

    I'v looked through all the settings in the Automatic Approval menu, but it could not find anything about automatically approve only the needed updates. Because if I check, for instance, to auto-approve only the "Definition updates", it will approve any Definition updates, whether they are needed by my workstations or not. This is because I dont want my WSUS server to download and store updates that are not needed by any of my workstations. Also we are a lazy SMB, and we dont want to waste time to manually approve updates and stuff. Is this even possible ?

  • New to VS.net (VB.net) 2008. Windows 7 aero glass stuff.

    Hey all, i have been using VB.net 2008 for a few months and i have a question. I compiled my program and ran it in a VM running windows 7. However, the progress bar looks like it does in XP. It doesn't have that cool look to it like I've seen in many other programs running in windows 7. I have downloaded the 3.5 .net framework with sp1 and also the sdk for windows 7 (1.4+ gb dvd) but i still see nothing. Is there a check-box i am missing in VS 2008 to enable these types of features? Maybe some type of code i need to place in the program? Thanks! David

    Hi, With Microsoft SQL Server 2005, is it possible to combine the processing power of multiple physical servers into a single logical sql server? Is it possible on SQL Server 2008? I'm thinking, if the database files were located on a SAN and somehow one of the sql servers acted as a kind of master, then processing could be spread out over multiple physical servers, for instance even allowing simultaneous updates where there was no overlap, and in the case of read-only queries on unlocked tables no limit. We have an application that is limited by the speed of our sql server, and probably stuck with server 2005 for now. Is the only option to get a single more powerful physical server? Sorry I'm not an expert, I'm not sure if the question is a stupid one. TIA

  • Network location is not on the Domain

    I have a computer joined to the domain, but it doesn't view the network "location" as being part of the domain. I have tried removing and rejoining the domain and this doesn't help: Other computers in the same network don't have this problem. I have also tried several different icons, including both the train and the airplane which doesn't seem to make a difference. At least using nslookup, the server seems to have connectivity with the DCs in the same site. There also seem to be some errors that suggest a NULL domain: Computer: OR-WEB05.ds.stackexchange.com Description: NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of failure in establishing a trust relationship between this computer and the '' domain in order to securely synchronize time. NtpClient will try again in 3473457 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed. (0x800706FD)

    Say you have a SQL Server 2008 database. You build a SOAP web service. You then deploy or publish this using Visual Studio 2010 in one website. Now, using the same database, you build a REST web service, in a different solution. You deploy this on another website. Can you consume the endpoints and/or .svc file of both the SOAP and REST web services, though they reference the same SQL Server 2008 database? I don't see why not, but before I go down this path and spend days I'd like to make sure. Also if there's a performance hit to the database if it is running both SOAP and REST at the same time--again, I don't see why it would matter, but I must make sure. Thanks.

The client machines have cached the old password and have the ability to bypass the new password by entering the old one..? Basically; I'm running a UAC enabled domain, which needs the administrator password to continue basic stuff; installations and such. The password for the administrator account has been changed due to expiration of said accounts password. By accident a fellow administrator typed the old password and still bypassed the UAC with what should have been the incorrect password. Is this a bug with the environment? or something that needs to be tweaked in the server sided settings?
