• Using your own gameloop logic on iphone?

  I'm currently working on moving some android-ndk code to the iphone and have hit a wall. I'm new to iphone development, and from looking at some samples it seems that the main loop is handled for you and all you've got to do is override the render method on the view to handle the rendering and add a selector to handle the update methods. The render method itself lookslike it's attached to the windows refresh. But in android I've got my own game loop that controls the rendering and updates using c++ time.h. is it possible to implement the same here bypassing apple's loop? I'd really like the keep the structures of the code similar. Thanks!

• iStack for iPad

  The below image is the current, and hopefully final, look of the front screen, the app will remember which stack site you have chosen so the user will only see this screen the first time, but they can always go back and change it. The red bar is only there when a new site is added (the StackOverflow is just a test as no site has been added since I implemented this) and can be gotten rid of by tapping the X on the right side (which isn't in the screenshot). Each column now has an edit button where the sites can be rearranged and moved from favourites to non favourites and this is persistent between app launches, moving a site in one column moves it in all of them. I've removed site icons in order to put them in properly so they load lazily and theres no UI freezing. Printing Functionality all implemented and working, thanks to systempuntoout's stackprinter.com works with AirPrint, which means this app will be iOS 4.2 minimum. Current features: 3 columns Email link to question, open in safari and copy link actions History for both questions and sites visited In app notification (red bar at the top) when a new site makes it into beta. StackPrinter in the app, without needing safari, and AirPrint functionality. Facebook Intergration Planned: Local Favourites Watching (a list of questions your watching, like short term favourites, with eventually push notifications) Web service to access local favourites and watches on non-iPad devices. • Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • Online Multiplayer Game Architecture [on hold]

  I am just starting to research online multiplayer game development and I have a high-level architectural question regarding how online multiple games function. I have server-side and client-side programming experience, and I understand how AJAX-esque transfer protocol operates. What I don't understand yet is how online multiple fits into all of that. For example, an online Tetris multiplayer game. Would both players have the entire Tetris game built out on their client-side and then get pushed "moves" from the other player via some AJAX-esque mechanism, in which case each client would have to be constantly listening via JavaScript for inbound "moves" and update the client appropriately? Or would each client build out the aesthetics and run a virtual server per game to which each client connects and thus pull and push commands in real-time via something like web sockets? I apologize if this question is too high-level and general, but I couldn't find anything online that offered this high-level of a perspective on the topic.

  I am a research chemist by day and I am a self-taught hobbyist iOS programmer by night. I am in the process of developing a moderately complex iOS app and hope to launch it within a month or two. I love everything about iOS development (and programming in general). I want to know if iOS development could become a backup career for me if I loose my job. My question: Let's say I had a couple of apps in the app store, a solid foundation in objective-C and the apple frameworks and basic knowledge on network integrated apps. Without a formal CS degree, what other experience/knowledge would I need to land a job as a professional iOS developer? Forgive me if this question is out of bounds for this forum. If it is, suggestions on where to post such a question would be appreciated.

  Possible Duplicate: How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems So suppose I'm currently developing a variant of a snakes game for the iPhone, and you decided to call it "snakes". First, in general, how would you find out if a name's been copyrighted or not? It's probably safe with "snakes" because it's such a common word, and that there's been so many games around (please correct me if I'm wrong), but with some people copyrighting the name "edge", it would be best to be a bit careful. Second, suppose I decided to go with some name that is guaranteed to be different (e.g EL SERPENTES DE LOS REYES), would gameplay be a point of contention on copyright issues? For example, the tetris game is sort of "copyrighted" at the apple app store, and there was a crackdown on anyone using the word "tris" or anything related to it. However, if there was a game with the gameplay of tetris (or loosely very similar), with the name "BLOXODEREX", can it be liable to copyright/DMCA issues?

• Temporarily share/deploy a python (flask) application

  Goal Temporarily (1 month?) deploy/share a python (flask) web app without expensive/complex hosting. More info I've developed a basic mobile web app for the non-profit I work for. It's written in python and uses flask as its framework. I'd like to share this with other employees and beta testers (<25 people). Ideally, I could get some sort of simple hosting space/service and push regular updates to it while we test and iterate on this app. Think something along the lines of dropbox, which of course would not work for this purpose. We do have a website, and hosting services for it, but I'm concerned about using this resource as our website is mission critical and this app is very much pre-alpha at this point. Options I've researched / considered Self host from local machine/network (slow, unreliable) Purchase hosting space (with limited non-profit resources, I'm concerned this is overkill) Using our current web server / hosting (not appropriate for testing) Thanks very much for your time!

• Is there any way to disable write-access to source code from within Xcode?

  Is there any easy solution to prevent Xcode from writing to source files in a project? I want to edit source files externally and only use Xcode for debugging and so I want to prevent any accidental modifications getting saved via xcode. (Obviously I want Xcode to pickup external changes to files when I build/debug) One possible solution that I thought of was to enable app sandbox entitlements on xcode and manually maintain a list of directories that it should not write to. Is this feasible? Any other ideas? On the sandboxing thing, I'm not sure if Xcode is disqualified as per Apple's Sandboxing Requirements.

• How to implement Facebook leaderboard game for mobile?

  I am in the final stages of developing an indie C# mobile game that I will deploy to iPhones and Androids using Mono. I wish to add push notifications and a Facebook leader board feature into the game, such that the user will be presented with a list of all his/her friends that are playing the game and their weekly scores in the main screen. I have ZERO experience with web development/networking/databases. I recently started researching the field and formed a basic understanding. Facebook has SDKs in PHP, JavaScript, obj-c and java, tho reading the documentation examples still feels cryptic to me since it involves web/server tech. After researching some more, I understood that my options for server side are basically PHP or ASP.Net. It seems that ASP.Net is more favorable in my case since I am already proficient with C# (but there is no ASP.net SDK from Facebook... I am not sure if this implies that I cant interact with Facebook using ASP.Net). On the down side some have mentioned higher costs for ASP.Net, tho I havent looked further into that aspect yet. I also understood that JavaScript is client side technology. I started going through tutorials of ASP.Net, I was thinking that ASP.Net is a purely server side management language, but it started feeling more like WPF as those tutorials started getting into very lengthy discussions about creating website interfaces and styles. I am not interested in that, I just want to have a web server which my app can somehow communicate with and get friends/scores. Am I learning the right technologies for my goal? should I be learning something else? I am posting this in hopes that someone who knows this field well can see through my problem and help guide me, otherwise I could spend months studying something that might not be the right solution to my goal.   I know there is a big push for code reviews in commercial development. However, are code reviews used in open source software or is based on trust? If so, then how are they performed? [Is it a delayed commit, "a pre commit environment", is there a tool that allows for the patch to be sent to another dev]? Are there any projects that use code reviews? From my understanding the linux kernel is mostly based around trust of the commitor. MySQL was based on the main author's approval and the performance impact.

  I need a small clarification about streamInsight, I know by doc's that StreamInsight can handle multiple concurrent Events. But will the event producer be a separate function, for ex: I need to watch a folder for new Files becoz all my sensors il write readings every day in a new file in particular drive. Method 1: FileSystemWatcher: These is the traditional approach where we write a service using FileSystemWatcher to watch a folder for new files,etc.. Upon receiving event from FileSystemWatcher il perform some operations on these files. How to do these using streamInsight??? I came know that using IObservable i can push events to StreamInsight. But is there anything to watch folder is sreamInsight like FileSystemWatcher. OR In order to raise events to streamInsight do we need to use FileSystemWacther?   The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Is there a distributed project management software like Redmine?

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. So, can you recommend me a distributed project management software? If your suggestion is a software that usually runs on a server please include a description of the distribution method (e.g. whether simply putting the data in a git repository would do the trick), and if it's e.g. trac, please mention plugins required to include the features mentioned.

• Is there an alternative to the default lock-screen?

  I have a tablet PC that I'm running oneric on. One thing I don't like is that the default lock screen requires you to enter a password. Since this is a tablet, this means that it either needs to be connected to a keyboard, or I have to figure out how to get onboard to show up for the lock screen (caribou wont even start, and gok is messed up too). Even if I could do that, anyway, it's not what I want, since locking the screen is mostly to prevent erroneous input when I'm carrying it around (not for security). Are there any alternative applications for the lock screen? Anything like the plethora of android lock screens that allow you to solve puzzles or push a particular widget in a particular way to unlock the screen?

• How should I manage "reverting" a branch done with bookmarks in mercurial?

  I have an open source project on bitbucket. Recently, I've been working on an experimental branch which I (for whatever reason) didn't make an actual branch for. Instead what I did was use bookmarks. So I made two bookmarks at the same revision test --the new code I worked on that should now be abandoned(due to an experiment failure) main -- the stable old code that works I worked in test. I also pushed from test to my server, which ended up switching the tip tag to the new unstable code, when I really would've rather it stayed at main. I "switched" back to the main bookmark by doing a hg update main and then committing an insignificant change. So, I pushed this with hg push -f and now my source control is "correct" on the server. I know that there should be a cleaner way to "switch" branches. What should I do in the future for this kind of operation?

  Twitter is a popular social networking web service for writing and sharing short messages. These tidy text messages are referred to as tweets and are limited to 140 characters. Users can leave tweets and follow other users directly from Twitter's website or by using the Twitter API. Twitter's API makes it possible to integrate Twitter with external applications. For example, you can use the Twitter API to display your latest tweets on your blog. A mom and pop online store could integrate Twitter such that a new tweet was added each time a customer completed an order. And ELMAH, a popular open-source error logging library, can be configured to send error notifications to Twitter. Twitter's API is implemented over HTTP using the design principles of Representational State Transfer (REST). In a nutshell, inter-operating with the Twitter API involves a client - your application - sending an XML-formatted message over HTTP to the server - Twitter's website. The server responds with an XML-formatted message that contains status information and data. While you can certainly interface with this API by writing your own code to communicate with the Twitter API over HTTP along with the code that creates and parses the XML payloads exchanged between the client and server, such work is unnecessary since there are many community-created Twitter API libraries for a variety of programming frameworks. • Do employers hiring for Software jobs care about the classes you took in CS masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester( Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics ). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book( I already have both books actually ) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think more importantly what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?
