• Unable to boot from USB boot drive for AMD Athlon 64

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 ISO for AMD64 Athlon processor using USB drive (8GB). I did create a bootable USB using the USB installer from Win7 intel 32bit processor (followed steps from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows). This USB is unable to boot on my AMD64 bit processor. The bios is able to detect the USB and once I change the boot order to USB and save exit from bios, I get a message saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS CONTINUE" and unable to proceed further. However earlier to this I have successfully installed Ubuntu 13.04 on to my laptop which has Intel 32 bit core i5 processor with the same procedure but my desktop which has AMD64 is failing. I also tried to create the USB installer on my desktop which has the AMD64 bit processor and tried booting which also resulted in the same error. (My desktop currently has Win XP) Please help as I have run out of options. thanks, Nagarjun

• Help with intel Imac 2008 Audio not working

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I get no audio except if i insert speakers and set them as headphones. This means really weird feedback and little volume. i'd like to set it back to the mac's default speakers but currently no matter what graphical interface i go into such as Audio or Alsamixer i can not fix the problem.Ive run alsamixer and looked thoroughly throught the forums but cannot find the answer to my problem. When i input cat /proc/asound/cards i get 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0x50600000 irq 47 Any help would be very much appreciated and as a newcomer i would be glad to give you any information you need. • Using two ethernet connections (Internet enabled) simultaneously

  I have searched and read over the Internet and also on askubuntu. i am using Ubuntu 11.04 and my question or the thing that I want to achieve is efficient use of both the connections and thus increasing my browsing and downloading speed. I want my system to decide which packet should be routed over which interface. I want to know if this is possible. For example, Is it possible to route alternate packets over the two interfaces ? Please let me know any Internet resource or If I would have to insert any code into the network drivers etc. ?

  The mysql chars is utf-8, and the jsp page is also set to utf-8. I use the method: DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/jsptest?"+"useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8","root",""); But it can not be use. When I insert Chinese chars into mysql and select it out, that would be proper functioning.   I am developing a simple mainly static website using WordPress (because maybe in the future I will add some dynamic content) for a company. The new site have to follow the structure of the old site that requires the presence of a vertical main menu in the left column that contains the link to all the statics pages in the site. This is the old site structure: http://www.saranistri.com/ Now I have installed a new WordPress test site (this is only a test site): http://onofri.org/example/ As you can see in the left columns I have put two main menu vetical widgets that implements a possible choise for the maun menù (the top menù upon the header must be eliminated in the final implementation) I want to know some opinions about: 1) Which of the two version is better? Do you have some additional ideas about the CSS style of this vertical menu? 2) What could I do to give a more professional look to this site? • Which app can I use for easily annotating pictures/screenshots?

  Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc. I tried the Gimp but I could only enter text and perform all image transformations but couldn't find a way to draw boxes etc. I finally settled to Openoffice.org draw, but I know that isn't what I want, because in oodraw I need to insert my pic into a drawing and resize it (or the drawing) to fit and then go about making changes and finally export to png... Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

• USB key will only be mounted by gparted [?]

  Hi, When I insert by usb key nothing happens (i.e. the drive is not visible). I can mount the USB drive from gparted though (and then it's suddenly recognized). It's not particular to any USB key. This only happens on my laptop (on the desktop the same key will be mounted upon plugging it in without any problems). Finally, the key is formated as fat32 and dosfstools and mtools are installed (through gparted claims otherwise). what's the catch? EDIT Also, gparted offers me the option to mount the key on "/" : shouldn't that be "/media" (or has this changed ?)

• What is the difference between Indicator Plugin and Notification Area?

  I don't really understand why Ubuntu has two "notification area" style things that seem to serve the same functionality. I can't use only one because some of the programs seem to only work with Notification Area (e.g. Orage) and some only work with Indicator Plugin (e.g. indicator-sound). I noticed that the network manager applet will prefer to insert itself into Indicator Plugin and if that isn't available, try Notification Area. I don't understand why we have/need both? Is it normal to keep both running?

• 12.04 freezes on install

  I'm new to ubuntu and can't for the life of me understand how to get around this issue. I'm having a problem where when I insert the boot disk that i burned for 12.04, it loads and gives me the language option and select an installation type, i select either try ubuntu / install ubuntu and it begins to load. Then after about 5 mintues of the purple screen with the dots under the UBUNTU it freezes the whole computer, and the only way to get out is to turn off the laptop with the power button. I have read previous threads saying people had similar "freezing" issues including ones that mention my model of laptop, HP Pavillion DV1000. But it appears their problems are post installation and relate to their wireless cards. I have tried changing the boot options (F6) and I am totally stuck. Can anyone shed any light on to this issue?   I'm having abit of a brainfart and I can't quite grasp what I'm doing wrong. It's quite simple, I am importing an image with FreeImage (http://freeimage.sourceforge.net/) which has a method FreeImage_GetBits that returns a pointer to the first byte of the image data. I then try to load all the data into memory using (bitsperpixel / 8) * pixelsWidth ' pixelHeight, like this: uint32_t bitsPerPixel = FreeImage_GetBPP(bitmap); // resolves to 24 uint32_t widthInPixels = FreeImage_GetWidth(bitmap); // resolves to 1024 uint32_t heightInPixels = FreeImage_GetHeight(bitmap); // resolves to 1024 // container is a std::vector<uint8_t> pkgMaterial.mTextureData.insert(pkgMaterial.mTextureData.begin(), FreeImage_GetBits(bitmap), FreeImage_GetBits(bitmap) + ((bitsPerPixel/8) * widthInPixels * heightInPixels)); I have a jpg which is 31 kilobytes in size on disc. Yet when I load it using the above formula, I see the vector is then filled with 3145728 bytes, which is approx 3145 kilobytes. What am I doing wrong?

• Can't find my DVD drive in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am completely new to Linux, due to some problems in my Windows I decided to give Linux a try. I am quite liking it accept for some minor issues. The biggest of them is that I cannot find my DVD drive in Ubuntu. After I insert the disk, the drive's green light flickers and then nothing. I don't get anything on my unity bar or desktop. There is no folder inside my /dev folder which indicates a dvd drive. There is a cdrom folder in my root folder but nothing is there. If you guys know what's wrong, I'd appreciate the help. Am a complete newbie so don't expect me to know anything about Ubuntu, although I have spent lots of hours in last 2 days googling my issue so I have basic information...

  I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and want to upgrade it to 12.04. I have downloaded 12.04 from the Ubuntu site and burned as ISO image CD in a DVD (because it is 701.3MB). When I insert this DVD into my drive for installation, it does not boot. A blank black screen appears. In 8.10 when I click on update to 9.04 it shows some error. Ubuntu 8.10 is not as good as 12.04. Please friends help me to solve this problem. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 in my pc.

  I'm writing a basic CMS for one of my sites and have run into an issue where some pages need to dynamically serve PHP and JS, where as others are plain HTMl. I want there to be a setting which will allow this for the pages that need it and will load ACE editor instead of a different wysiwyg editor. The challenge here is that on the pages which I do not explicitly tell it there will be code, I want to reject any inputs that code. I can set it up to insert a for all pages without JS, but how can I keep php code from running?

• Ubuntu crashed during the update to 12.04, not I can't recover my files, help please

  I'm pretty new to Linux and I've only installed Ubuntu as I couldn't afford to buy Windows, worked well and I liked it. But I chose to upgrade it to the newest version after a prompt. The update froze and the machine was unresponsive which forced me to hard reboot it. Now nothing seems to load and I've reached my wits end (mainly cos I'm lost in all the command lines). I've decided to try and recover my data from the hard drive, only two folders, by selecting the try Ubuntu option when I insert the OS CD into the machine. The problem I'm experiencing now is it won't let me copy my folders, I get a 'The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "folder_name".' Does anyone know how I can recover this data?

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what.   The error: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' cannot be used for distributed queries because the provider is configured to run in single-threaded apartment mode. And the answers I'm seeing is a conflict between 64 bit Sql Server and 32 bit Office.   I wanted to easily blend a UIImage on top of another background image, so wrote a category method for UIImage, adapted from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1309757/blend-two-uiimages : - (UIImage *) blendedImageOn:(UIImage *) backgroundImage { NSAutoreleasePool* pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(backgroundImage.size); CGRect rect = CGRectMake(0, 0, backgroundImage.size.width, backgroundImage.size.height); [backgroundImage drawInRect:rect]; [self drawInRect:rect]; UIImage* blendedImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); UIGraphicsEndImageContext(); [pool release]; return blendedImage; } Unfortunately my app that uses the above method to load around 20 images and blend them with background and gloss images (so probably around 40 calls), is being jettisoned on the device. An Instruments session revealed that calls to malloc stemming from the calls to drawInRect: are responsible for the bulk of the memory usage. I tried replacing the drawInRect: messages with equivalent function calls to the function CGContextDrawImage but it didn't help. The AutoReleasePool was added after I found the memory usage problem; it also didn't make a difference. I'm thinking this is probably because I'm not using graphics contexts appropriately. Would calling the above method in a loop be a bad idea because of the number of contexts I create? Or did I simply miss something?
