Is ruby ||= intelligent?

I have a question regarding the ||= statement in ruby and this is of particular interest to me as I'm using it to write to memcache. What I'm wondering is, does ||= check the receiver first to see if it's set before calling that setter, or is it literally an alias to x = x || y This wouldn't really matter in the case of a normal variable but using something like: CACHE[:some_key] ||= "Some String" could possibly do a memcache write which is more expensive than a simple variable set. I couldn't find anything about ||= in the ruby api oddly enough so I haven't been able to answer this myself. Of course I know that: CACHE[:some_key] = "Some String" if CACHE[:some_key].nil? would achieve this, I'm just looking for the most terse syntax.

I have a table in Access in a custom format saved as dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss tt , Also A form in VB.NET 2010, I get a specific day, month and year with no problem but the problem comes when I want to query the sum of a column named value depending on a specific month or day or year.... Printing array with delimiters in Perl

I have an array in Perl I want to print with space delimiters between each element, except every 10th element which should be newline delimited. There aren't any spaces in the elements if that matters. I've written a function to do it with for and a counter, but I wondered if there's a better/shorter/canonical Perl way, perhaps a special join syntax or similar. Django and ajax image file upload errors and csrf

I tried out Alex Kuhl's ajax script to upload images to Django 1.4. My first question is why I'm getting an empty page with firebug telling me I have two errors: fileuploader.js (line 4): syntax error <!DOCTYPE html> In my template html: qq is not defined var uploader = new qq.FileUploader( { Here is my entire html file for it: http://pastebin.com/NjbV5gMn This post suggests that either some script has 404'd or the src attribute is empty, which would cause the doctype error. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. As for why qq is not defined, I'm not sure what is wrong. Django can clearly find the fileuploader.js just fine from my static folder. My second question is why the ajax code uses {{ csrf_token }} instead of {% csrf_token %}. Ruby: Add a method to the class of an input parameter

I'm just exploring ruby and was wondering about the theoretical possibility of adding a method to the class of an object. For example, define a method that takes in a parameter and would add a method to the class of that parameter (not just to the parameter object itself). Something like this example: class SomeClass end class AnotherClass end alpha = SomeClass.new beta = AnotherClass.new def AddHelloMethodTo param # This is where I'm trying to # add a method to the class of the parameter def param.class.Hello "Hello" end end AddHelloMethodTo alpha AddHelloMethodTo beta gamma = AnotherClass.new alpha.Hello beta.Hello gamma.Hello (Excuse me if I have syntax errors / typos I'm REALLY new to this!) Notice how I don't call the AddHelloMethodTo on gamma but I expect Hello to be defined because I added it to the class. Is this possible?

RDF Usage Rates for Syndication

Is RDF still used widely for content syndication? Specifically, I know only of Slashdot as a large scale website syndicating content in that format (say versus RSS). Understandably this might seem vague to answer so more specifically: Can anyone list any larger sites similar in scale to Amazon or CNN using it? Any web based publishing platforms (Wordpress, Joomla, etc...) that generate syndication feeds with this xml vocabulary. Any other more quantifiable evidence that it is used for syndication online. I understand that RDF may be a parent specification but in this case I'm talking about sites that syndicate content using <rdf as a root element and heavily leveraging elements from the RDF namespace: http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#

Auto-Complete Suggestions in Source Code Editor

Hello, Most IDEs (Eclipse, Netbeans, Intelij) provide contextually smart suggestions about the current statement you're writing. We would like to do the same thing (In Java for Java). We considered tokenizing the input and building our own abstract syntax trees, but quickly realized that could be a month long project in and of its self. We also started digging through the source code for the above mentioned IDEs, but it appears (correct me if I'm wrong) that the auto-complete code is pretty tightly woven with the rest of the IDE. We're wondering if anyone knows of a relatively isolated package that we could pull into our project to provide this auto-complete functionality. Thanks!

jQuery remove selected option from this

Hi all, first post here, I come in peace :) I've searched but can't quite find what I'm after. I am trying to manipulate the selected option of a select box. Can someone please explain why this works: $('#some_select_box').click(function() { $('#some_select_box option:selected').remove(); }); but this doesn't: $('#some_select_box').click(function() { $('this option:selected').remove(); }); I just want to use "this" instead of spelling out the id of the select box - can someone point me in the right direction for the correct syntax? It's driving me mad because it looks like it should be really simple. And I'm sure it is to someone, but not me, cos its the end of the day and I'm brain-fried... Any pointers much appreciated. Weird SQL Server 2005 Collation difference between varchar() and nvarchar()

Can someone please explain this: SELECT CASE WHEN CAST('iX' AS nvarchar(20)) > CAST('-X' AS nvarchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END, CASE WHEN CAST('iX' AS varchar(20)) > CAST('-X' AS varchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END Results: 0 1 SELECT CASE WHEN CAST('i' AS nvarchar(20)) > CAST('-' AS nvarchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END, CASE WHEN CAST('i' AS varchar(20)) > CAST('-' AS varchar(20)) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END Results: 1 1 On the first query, the nvarchar() result is not what I'm expecting, and yet removing the X make the nvarchar() sort happen as expected. (My original queries used the '' and N'' literal syntax to distinguish varchar() and nvarchar() rather than CAST() and got the same result.) Collation setting for the database is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.

"/" . $year ." - ". $album . "/" . $track ." - ". $artist ." - ". $title . XSLT: How to escape square brackets in Urls

I have a set of records from Solr where field[@name='url'] can have the following format: http://url/blabla/blabla.aspx?sv=[keyword%20keyword,%201] My understanding is that the square brackets denote an array syntax and I would like to use XSLT to remove the square brackets from all Urls. The reason for this is that I am using an Open URL resolver, which does not currently handle well those characters. The best option would be to strip the square brackets from all URLs before such resources are mediated by the Open URL resolver. There are cases where I have multiple occurrences of square brackets per Url. Can you please help me with this? Thanks for your help, I.

Again I'm still new to this javascript thing, so just would like to know if there is another way of setting the values of an array (just like declaring it); //correct way of declaring an array and reusing var adata = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable adata[0] = '4'; adata[1] = '5'; adata[2] = '6' ** This part is my question; I want to declare the values of the array just like declaring them to minimize the number of lines; //array declaration var data = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable data = ['4','5','6']; --- (as an example) I get an error msg "Invalid assignment left-hand side" is this possible? Using the "naked" attribute for functions in GCC

GCC documentation (http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Function-Attributes.html) states in 6.29 Declaring Attributes of Functions "naked Use this attribute on the ARM, AVR, IP2K, RX and SPU ports to indicate that the specified function does not need prologue/epilogue sequences generated by the compiler. It is up to the programmer to provide these sequences. The only statements that can be safely included in naked functions are asm statements that do not have operands. All other statements, including declarations of local variables, if statements, and so forth, should be avoided. Naked functions should be used to implement the body of an assembly function, while allowing the compiler to construct the requisite function declaration for the assembler." Can I safely call functions using C syntax from naked functions, or only by using asm?

Maybe this should be a community wiki page... What unix text editor should I learn? My co-workers mostly use vi. I am thinking about vim because the syntax highlighting seems appealing. Is there any advantage to vi over vim? I know that there are a lot of emacs fans out there too? Is there any reason to learn a specific editor? Can you point me to some good learning references (for your suggested editor)? Thanks!

For programming content, what simple-to-use-and-setup PHP based blog are the preferred ones?

I've since long wanted a place I can toss my programming related nuggets at. Every day I feel I solve something that I'll surely hit again in a not so distant future, but by then I most certainly will have forgotten about the previous solution I came up with. So I need to blog it down, quick and dirty, for my own documentation and memory's sake. Must be easy to set up and use. Must handle code syntax and highlighting gracefully for a number of languages, but mainly C# and C++. Must be PHP-based, because that's what my host supplies. I know and have used WordPress (not for code, though), but is it really what I want or need?

Git push origin master

I am new to git and recently set up a new account with github. I'm following a rails tutorial from Michael Hartl online ( http://www.railstutorial.org/book#fig:github_first_page ) and followed his instructions to set up my git which were also inline with the setup instructions at github. Anyways, the "Next Steps" section on github were: mkdir sample_app cd sample_app git init touch README git add README git commit -m 'first commit' git remote add origin [email protected]:rosdabos55/sample_app.git git push origin master I got all the way to the last instruction (git push origin master) without any problem. When I entered that last line into my terminal, however, I got this error message: "fatal: No path specified. See 'man git-pull' for valid url syntax." What might I be doing wrong?

How can I copy a file from VMS to Windows and back again?

I am trying to copy C source files from a vms alpha to a windows machine to allow easier editing of the code. (VMS editor is just a text editor and it would be nice to have syntax highlighting etc) I can copy this across using Exceed FTP and this handles the issue of duplicate filenames with version suffix that vms has: File.c;1 File.c;2 Flle.c;3 But when I open a file I've transferred, all the line breaks have been lost and the entire file is just one line. Can anyone recommend a solution to this or offer any hints? Thanks in advance ps. I need to be able to copy the files back to vms and still maintain format.

Linq query with subquery as comma-separated values

In my application, a company can have many employees and each employee may have have multiple email addresses. The database schema relates the tables like this: Company - CompanyEmployeeXref - Employee - EmployeeAddressXref - Email I am using Entity Framework and I want to create a LINQ query that returns the name of the company and a comma-separated list of it's employee's email addresses. Here is the query I am attempting: from c in Company join ex in CompanyEmployeeXref on c.Id equals ex.CompanyId join e in Employee on ex.EmployeeId equals e.Id join ax in EmployeeAddressXref on e.Id equals ax.EmployeeId join a in Address on ax.AddressId equals a.Id select new { c.Name, a.Email.Aggregate(x=x + ",") } Desired Output: "Company1", "[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]" "Company2", "[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]" ... I know this code is wrong, I think I'm missing a group by, but it illustrates the point. I'm not sure of the syntax. Is this even possible? Thanks for any help.

Updating Excel Cell with Non-Numeric Data in C#

I have a query that is ExcelQuery = "Update [Sheet1$] set CITIZEN_ID = #" + value + " where CITIZEN_ID = " + value; As you can see, I'm essentially just appending a "#" onto the CITIZEN_ID field. value is a int/numeric value. So if I had "256" in the CITIZEN_ID column it would be converted to "#256" When I execute this I get an OleDbException Syntax error in date in query expression so I surrounded part of the query in single quotes like this, ExcelQuery = "Update [Sheet1$] set CITIZEN_ID = '#" + value + "' where CITIZEN_ID = " + value; With that I get yet another OleDbException this time with, Data type mismatch in criteria expression. I'm guessing for some reason the CITIZEN_ID fields don't want to take anything besides a plain number. Is there any way I can remedy this to get that pound symbol in? Thanks!

I'm trying to display my code on a website but I'm having problems preserving the whitespace indentation correctly. For instance given the following snippet: <html> <body> Here is my code: <pre> def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end </pre> <body> </html> This is displayed in the browser as: Here is my code: def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end When I would like it displayed as: Here is my code: def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end The difference is that that current indentation level of the HTML pre tag is being added to the indentation of the code. I'm using nanoc as a static website generator and I'm using google prettify to also add syntax highlighting. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

VS2010's "Public Property <PropertyName> As <DataType> vs. Public var

In VS2008, I used to type Public Property <PropName> As <dataType> and hit the Enter key and the IDE editor would automatically expand it out to a full blown property block. Now, from what I understand, a new feature of 2010 is that the compiler automatically "expands" the short syntax above into the same IL code that you would get with the full property GET AND SET sub methods that were are accustomed to seeing before in the editor. But functionality, how the heck is this any different than just having a Public class level variable? If the only diff is what it compiles to and if otehrwise there is no functional difference, isn't the new way less efficient than the old since it involves more code than just having a class level memory variable? Public as I thought that if you weren't going to have code behind your properties that they were essentially the same. I guess the diffrenece is that they just added the keyword "Property" but functionality, their is no diff, eh?

How can I display locally stored images on an internet website?

Hi, i would like to display images on my website that are stored on a visitors local filesystem. Assuming I have the location of the image on the visitors drive (e.g. c:\Documents And Settings\Ropstah\image.png), is it then possible for me to display this image in my internet website (e.g. www.website.com)? The images won't seem to load when i use the following syntax (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3 etc..): <img src="file://c:\Documents and Settings\Ropstah\image.png" /> The images DO display if the .html file (which i use on website.com/index.html) is located on my local pc...
