• Jetty startup delay

  I'm trying to figure out what would be causing a 1 minute delay in the startup of Jetty. Is it a configuration problem, my application, or something else? I have Jetty 7 (jetty-7.0.1.v20091125 25 November 2009) installed on a server and I deploy a 45MB ROOT.war file into the webapps directory. This is the only webapp configured in Jetty. I then start Jetty with the command: java -DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=mystopkey -Denv=stage -jar start.jar etc/jetty-logging.xml etc/jetty.xml & I get two lines of output right after doing this: 2010-03-07 14:20:06.642:INFO::Logging to StdErrLog::DEBUG=false via org.eclipse.jetty.util.log.StdErrLog 2010-03-07 14:20:06.710:INFO::Redirecting stderr/stdout to /home/zing/jetty-distribution-7.0.1.v20091125/logs/2010_03_07.stderrout.log When I press the enter key, I get my command prompt back. Notice the 1 minute long pause between the 3rd and 4th lines. What is Jetty doing at this point? What other things could be going on? It doesn't even look like it has started my Spring initialization yet. Note that I checked my /tmp directory to see if it was simply the time to unpack my war file, but the file had been completely unpacked even at the start of this 1 minute delay.

• How to use an OSGi service from a web application?

  I'm trying to develop a web application that is going to be launched from a HTTP OSGi service, this application needs to use other OSGi service (db4o OSGi), for what I need a reference to a BundleContext. I have tried two different approaches to get the OSGi context in the web application: Store the BundleContext of the Activator in an static field of a class that the web service can import and use. Use FrameworkUtil.getBundle(this.getClass()).getBundleContext() (being this an instance of MainPage, a class of the web application). I think that first option is completely wrong, but anyway I'm having problems with the class loaders in both options. In the second one it raises a LinkageError: java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation: loader (instance of org/apache/felix/framework/ModuleImpl$ModuleClassLoader) previously initiated loading for a different type with name "com/db4o/ObjectContainer" Also tried with Equinox and I have a similar error: java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation: loader (instance of org/eclipse/osgi/internal/baseadaptor/DefaultClassLoader) previously initiated loading for a different type with name "com/db4o/ObjectContainer" The code that provokes the exception is: ServiceReference reference = context.getServiceReference(Db4oService.class.getName()); Db4oService service = (Db4oService)context.getService(reference); database = service.openFile("foo.db"); The exception is raised in the last line, database class is ObjectContainer, if I change the type of this variable to Object exception is not raised, but It's not useful as an Object :)

• How to let m2eclipse use nexus repositories instead of maven one

  I have this situation: An artifact in maven local repo that I don't want to use anymore. Instead, I want it to be downloaded by maven from proxied nexus remote repository. It's a typical situation cause a lot of artifacts are called just name-SNAPSHOT and the artifact is changing but the name is still the same. Eclipse with m2eclipse is running. I delete the entire directory of the artifact in local maven repo m2eclipse "Reindex local maven repository" - which creates a new nexus index for local maven repo I guess Project - maven Update Dependencies - now m2eclipse should run maven, which doesn't see the artifact in local maven repo, so it uses nexus repositories to download it (expected behavior) Instead, the directory structure in maven local repo is recreated and there is this file: "m2e-lastUpdated.properties" with following inside: local|http\://nexus\:8082/nexus-webapp-1.6.0/content/groups/public|javadoc=1274399332215 local|http\://nexus\:8082/nexus-webapp-1.6.0/content/groups/public|sources=1274399332161 and m2eclipse says Missing artifact net.sourceforge.htmlunit:htmlunit:jar:2.8-SNAPSHOT:compile even though the artifact physically exists here: nexus:8082/nexus-webapp-1.6.0/content/repositories/htmlunit-snapshot/net/sourceforge/htmlunit/htmlunit/2.8-SNAPSHOT/htmlunit-2.8-SNAPSHOT.jar Maven just doesn't use this location at all. Trust me I tried everything, this m2eclipse behavior is terrible.

• Swing layout with miglayout and nested panels

  I have a Swing program using SwingLayout. The structure of the Swing components looks like this. JFrame JPanel (Cardlayout) JPanel (Miglayout) - Main panel Jpanel (Flowlayout) - Checkbox Panel JPanel (Flowlayout) - Option Panel My problem right now is that I'm not sure how to prevent the checkbox panel from growing. I don't want it to "push" out the column that it's in to the right. I want Wraplayout (which works fine on the option panel) to wrap the content of the checkbox panel when it grows too big. This is the view of it from the Windowsbuilder GUI inside of Eclipse. The panel with the label "sites" in it is the Checkbox Panel. Directly to the right of the Checkbox panel is the Option panel. The big panel containing both of them is the main panel. http://i.imgur.com/S7Njo.png This is what happens when I add too many checkboxes http://i.imgur.com/f2SZz.png My main problem is that I don't understand why setting "grow 0" on the column constraint for the first column in mainpanel doesn't prevent it from growing when the component inside gets too big as I add new checkboxes to the site panel (the site panel can have an arbitrary number of checkboxes). This is my miglayout for the main panel. mainPanel.setLayout(new MigLayout("", "[][grow]", "[][][][][][][][grow]")); Here are my component constraints for when I add the checkbox panel siteCheckBoxPanel = new JPanel(); mainPanel.add(siteCheckBoxPanel, "cell 0 0,alignx left,gapx 0px,aligny center"); siteCheckBoxPanel.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.CENTER, 5, 5)); I've also tried it without flow layout, and that doesn't fix anything. Any insight you could provide would be great! I'm also happy to provide more information if people have questions. FYI I've also tried "grow 0" on both the column and row constraint for the cell that the Checkbox Panel is inside.

• Picasa access in android: PicasaUploadActivity

  I am new to Android, and I'm struggling to figure out exactly what tools are available to me. I am developing for android 2.0.1 for now, just because that is what my device runs. Specifically, I am writing an app that I would like to upload images to a picasa album. I am almost sure this is supported; for example, the built in (google?) photo viewer has a 'share' button with a picasa option, and even a small bit of sample code, including the snippet [borrowed code! apologies if this is against the rules..] temp.setComponent(new ComponentName ("com.google.android.apps.uploader", "com.google.android.apps.uploader.picasa.PicasaUploadActivity")); startActivityForResult(temp, PICASA_INTENT) which looks like exactly what I want. But I can find no documentation anywhere. I am in fact quite unclear how to use this type of resource. From within eclipse, do I need to include another project, com.google.android.apps.uploader? If so, how do I get it? How do I include it? Is there any working sample code provided for me to peer at?

• Has anyone used Rational Team Concert (RTC)?

  The company I work for is currently evaluating replacements for SourceSafe, and for various reasons, I think RTC will be chosen. I'm a little scared that we're going to end up with a solution that isn't the best for us in our situation. I've tried researching a little bit about what it is, but all I have been able to find are marketing things, but nothing about how it actually works (any of the paradigms it uses, etc). Our team is around 8 developers and 2 QA people on a single project (and 4-5 more people that would be using it for their independent project). It seems like RTC is targetted for larger teams, but our team is relatively small. Does anyone has experience using RTC in a smaller team? The project that would be using it is a .NET/WPF application, so we would be using primarily Visual Studio. Is the Visual Studio integration any good, or are we stuck having to have Eclipse open on top of Visual Studio? Personally, I have been using Bazaar as my personal source control (and checking out/into sourcesafe from a branch), as well as on personal projects. Does RTC incorporate features of "third generation" version control systems, such as first class branching/merging and changesets rather than file changes, and good visualization of where changes come from? Also, what are the general pros and cons for it?

• Junit: splitting integration test and Unit tests.

  Hello all, I've inherited a load of Junit test, but these tests (apart from most not working) are a mixture of actual unit test and integration tests (requiring external systems, db etc). So I'm trying to think of a way to actually separate them out, so that I can run the unit test nice and quickly and the integration tests after that. The options are.. 1: Split them into separate directories. 2: Move to Junit4 and annotate the classes to separate them. 3: Use a file naming convention to tell what a class is , i.e. AdapterATest and AdapterAIntergrationTest. 3 has the issue that Eclipse has the option to "Run all tests in the selected project/package or folder". So it would make it very hard to just run the integration tests. 2: runs the risk that developers might start writing integration tests in unit test classes and it just gets messy. 1: Seems like the neatest solution, but my gut says there must be a better solution out there. So that is my question, how do you lot break apart integration tests and proper unit tests?

• FileNotFoundException when reading .xml file to parse

  I'm writing a program in Java where I read in data from an XML file and parse it. The file is imported into a folder named "Resources" in the src directory of my project. I'm using Eclipse. • Assigning static final int in a JUnit (4.8.1) test suite

  I have a JUnit test class in which I have several static final ints that can be redefined at the top of the tester code to allow some variation in the test values. I have logic in my @BeforeClass method to ensure that the developer has entered values that won't break my tests. I would like to improve variation further by allowing these ints to be set to (sensible) random values in the @BeforeClass method if the developer sets a boolean useRandomValues = true;. I could simply remove the final keyword to allow the random values to overwrite the initialisation values, but I have final there to ensure that these values are not inadvertently changed, as some tests rely on the consistency of these values. Can I use a constructor in a JUnit test class? Eclipse starts putting red underlines everywhere if I try to make my @BeforeClass into a constructor for the test class, and making a separate constructor doesn't seem to allow assignment to these variables (even if I leave them unassigned at their declaration); Is there another way to ensure that any attempt to change these variables after the @BeforeClass method will result in a compile-time error? Can I make something final after it has been initialised?

• Extending spring based app

  I have a spring-based Web Service. I now want to build a sort of plugin for it that extends it with beans. What I have now in web.xml is: <context-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/classes/*-configuration.xml</param-value> </context-param> My core app has main-configuration.xml which declares its beans. My plugin app has plugin-configuration.xml which declares additional beans. Now when I deploy, my build deploys plugin.jar into /WEB-INF/lib/ and copies plugin-configuration.xml into /WEB-INF/classes/ all under main.war. This is all fine (although I think there could be a better solution), but when I develop the plugin, I don't want to have two projects in Eclipse with dependencies. I wish to have main.jar that I include as a library. However, web.xml from main.jar isn't automatically discovered. How can I do this? Bean injection? Bean discovery of some sort? Something else? Note: I expect to have multiple different plugins in production, but development of each of them will be against pure main.jar Thank you.

• How to build an android test app with a dependency on another app using ant?

  I have a module called MyApp, and another module called MyAppTests which has a dependency on MyApp. Both modules produce APKs, one named MyApp.apk and the other MyAppTests.apk. I normally build these in IntelliJ or Eclipse, but I'd like to create an ant buildfile for them for the purpose of continuous integration. I used "android update" to create a buildfile for MyApp, and thanks to commonsware's answer to my previous question I've been able to build it successfully using ant. I'd now like to build MyAppTests.apk using ant. I constructed the buildfile as before using "android update", but when I run it I get an error indicating that it's not finding any of the classes in MyApp. Taking a que from my previous question, I tried putting MyApp.apk into my MyAppTests/libs, but unfortunately that didn't miraculously solve the problem. • feedparser fails during script run, but can't reproduce in interactive python console

  It's failing with this when I run eclipse or when I run my script in iPython: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xe2 in position 32: ordinal not in range(128) I don't know why, but when I simply execute the feedparse.parse(url) statement using the same url, there is no error thrown. This is stumping me big time. • WTK emulator bluetooth connection problem

  Hi! I'm developing a J2ME program with eclipse / WTK 2.5.2 and having problem with connecting two emulators using bluetooth. There is one server and one .client running on two different emulators. The problem is client program cannot discover any bluetooth device. • Apache Tomcat under Windows: Changing webapps default directory

  I am deploying my Java application with Ant. Unfortunately my test deployment on the local machine doesn't work because of Vista. The Program Files directionaries are protected and i don't want to start Ant or Eclipse as an Admin. So i had the idea to move my webapps folder to a workspace subfolder, so i can use relative paths in Ant as well. The solutions seems to be to modify the Host element in the server.xml. With Linux it isn't such a deal: <Host name="localhost" appBase="/path/to/webapps" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> But with Windows i don't get it right. We all know the power of jQuery in UI manipulations. But on the other hand, GWT is building a framework which could be used on client as well as on the sever side. It includes SDK (Java API libraries, compiler, and development server which allows to write client-side applications in Java and deploy them as JavaScript), Speed Tracer and plug-in for Eclipse.   I am trying to create a web service, my tools of trade are: ** Axis2, Eclipse, Tomcat, Ant ** I need to create a web service from Code, i.e. Write a basic java class which will have the methods to be declared in the WSDL. Then use java2WSDL.sh to create my WSDL. So, is this approach correct: Write my Java class with actual business logic package packageNamel; public class Hello{ public void World(String name) { SOP("Hello" + name); } } Now, when I pass this Hello.java to java2WSDL.sh, this will give me the WSDL. Finally, I will write the services.xml file, and create the Hello.aar with following dir structure: Hello.aar packageName Hello.class META-INF services.xml MANIFEST.MF Hello.WSDL Now, I assume, my service will be deployed when I put the aar in tomcat1/webapps/axis2/WEB-INF/services But, here comes my problem, HOW DO I ACCESS THE METHOD World(String name)???!!, i.e. I am clueless about the client code!   Hello, I am developing a java app (with odbc bridge - forgive me - the only paradox driver I have been able to obtain is the microsoft odbc driver) - which works fine while in eclipse, (and netbeans) - connecting and obtaining data from an ancient paradox 5.x database. So long as it is run from inside my IDE - it compiles and runs flawlessly. When I export it to a runable jar, suddenly [code][Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified[/code] occurs. The jar is being run on the same box as my developing IDE - so I am confused about the cause. It is being run via console from a user account, as per the IDE. My connection string is "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Paradox Driver (*.db )};DriverID=538; Fil=Paradox 5.X; DefaultDir=C:\paradox\database\location\" - obtained from connectionstrings.com - and as mentioned before, working fine while run from the IDE. The above seems to 'magically' create its own connection, avoiding the setup of a dsn - I am unsure quite how it does - but it works. The only other thing I can think that might be pertinent is that my PC is a 64bit o/s (windows server 2008). Please help, any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt

• Do ruby on rails programmers refactor?

  I'm a Java programmer who started programming Ruby on Rails one year ago. I like the language, rails itself and the principles behind them. But something that bothers me is that Ruby programmers don't seem to refactor. I noticed that there is a big lack of tools for refactoring in Ruby / Rails. Some IDE's, like Aptana and RubyMine seem to offer some very basic refactoring, but nothing really big compared to Eclipse's Java refactorings. Then there is another fact: most railers (even the pros) prefer some lightweight editors, like VIM or TextMate, instead of IDEs. Well, with these tools you just get zero refactoring (only regex with find/replace). This leaves me this impression that rails programmers don't refactor. It might be just a false impression, of course, but I would like to hear the opinion of people who work professionally with ruby on rails. Do you refactor? If you do, how do you do it,with which tools? If not, why not?

  Heyall... I want to build a lightweight linux configuration to use for development. The first idea is to use it inside a Virtual Machine under Windows, or old Laptops with 1Gb RAM top. Maybe even a distributable environment for developers. So the whole idea is to use a LAMP server, Java Application Server (Tomcat or Jetty) and X Windows (any Window manager, from FVWM to Enlightment), Eclipse, maybe jEdit and of course Firefox. Edit: I am changing this post to compile a possible list of distros and window managers that can be used to configure a real lightweight development environment. I am using as base personal experiences on this matter. Info about the distros can be easily found in their sites.   I need to made available a library to some bundles. This library makes use of RMI, so it needs (as far as I know, at least) to use the system class loader in order to work (I tried to "osgi-fy" the library, which results in classcastexceptions at runtime). So what I did was to remove the dependencies from the bundles that use that library, compile them with the library included in the property jars.extra.classpath (in the build.properties of the eclipse project).
