• What is the difference between Indicator Plugin and Notification Area?

  I don't really understand why Ubuntu has two "notification area" style things that seem to serve the same functionality. I can't use only one because some of the programs seem to only work with Notification Area (e.g. Orage) and some only work with Indicator Plugin (e.g. indicator-sound). I noticed that the network manager applet will prefer to insert itself into Indicator Plugin and if that isn't available, try Notification Area. I don't understand why we have/need both? Is it normal to keep both running?

• PHP resized image functions and S3 upload functions - but how to merge the two?

  I am using S3 to store images and I am resizing and compressing images before it gets uploaded using PHP. I'm using this class for storing the images to an S3 bucket - http://undesigned.org.za/2007/10/22/amazon-s3-php-class This all works fine if I'm not doing any file processing before the file is uploaded because it reads the file upload from the $_FILES array. The problem is I am resizing and compressing the image before storing to the S3 bucket. So I'm no longer able to read from the $_FILES array. • sudo port install arm-elf-gcc3 fails with "No defined site for tag: gcc…"

  Am trying to get the ARM plugin for Eclipse (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuarmeclipse/) going on iMac i7, OS 10.6.3, Xcode 3.2.2 (don't want to upgrade during my project). The plugin needs (IIRC) arm-elf-gcc3, which needs darwinports for "easy" install.   My aim is to extend the eclipse QuickFix component and automate the process of solving syntax errors. Basically, the QuickFix component provides a list of solutions and my task is to select the best possible fix and apply it to the buggy code. But, for now I've been requested to print the resolutions for a marker in the console. I've tried to work out a tutorial and I'm kind of stuck right now.   I have found many people with simliar issues but no soultions...basically I have two eclipse plug-ins that both in ther class path rely on the same jar. The UI plug-in replies on the Driver plug-in (implementing a custom ODA driver and UI for it). • Importing MEF-Plugins into MVC Controllers

  Hello. There are several examples of using MEF to plugin whole controller/view packages into a MVC application, but i didn't found one, using MEF to plugin funcional parts, used by other controllers. For example, think of a NewsService with a simple interface like interface INewsService { List<NewsItem> GetAllNews(); } That gets news wherever he wants, and returns them in a List of NewsItems. My page should load an exported INewsService and show the news on the page. But there is the problem. I cant just use [Import] in the controllers, as they are just created when they are needed. Edit: (Importing them to the main MVCApplication class doesn't work, becouse i cant access it from the controllers.) I think i found a way to access the main app via HttpContext.ApplicationInstance. But the Service object in this instance is null although it was created successfully in the Application_Start() method. Any idea why? So, how can i access the NewsService from within a controller?   I'm launching an EC2 instance, by invoking ec2-run-instances from simple a bash script, and want to perform further operations on that instance (e.g. associate elastic IP), for which I need the instance id. The command is something like ec2-run-instances ami-dd8ea5a9 -K pk.pem -C cert.pem --region eu-west-1 -t c1.medium -n 1, and its output: RESERVATION r-b6ea58c1 696664755663 default INSTANCE i-945af9e3 ami-dd8ea5b9 pending 0 c1.medium 2010-04-15T10:47:56+0000 eu-west-1a aki-b02a01c4 ari-39c2e94d In this example, i-945af9e3 is the id I'm after. So, I'd need a simple way to parse the id from what the command returns - how would you go about doing it? My AWK is a little rusty... Feel free to use any tool available on a typical Linux box. (If there's a way to get it directly using EC2-API-tools, all the better. But afaik there's no EC2 command to e.g. return the id of the most recently launched instance.)

• Difference between an LL and Recursive Descent parser?

  I've recently being trying to teach myself how parsers (for languages/context-free grammars) work, and most of it seems to be making sense, except for one thing. I'm focusing my attention in particular on LL(k) grammars, for which the two main algorithms seem to be the LL parser (using stack/parse table) and the Recursive Descent parser (simply using recursion). As far as I can see, the recursive descent algorithm works on all LL(k) grammars and possibly more, whereas an LL parser works on all LL(k) grammars. A recursive descent parser is clearly much simpler than an LL parser to implement, however (just as an LL one is simply than an LR one). So my question is, what are the advantages/problems one might encounter when using either of the algorithms? Why might one ever pick LL over recursive descent, given that it works on the same set of grammars and is trickier to implement? Hopefully this question makes some amount of sense. Sorry if it doesn't - I blame my the fact that this entire subject is almost entirely new to me.

PostgreSQL comes with PgAdminIII. It's OK but I feel there might be something better than that.   Hi. I have a client who wants a paypal shopping cart. All of the services have "Buy Now" buttons, all with different prices. However, there is one service, which is a FREE 0 dollar service. The client wants the "Buy Now" button to remain there, to be consistent with the rest of the site. Does anyone know how I can do a $0 dollar transaction with paypal? • Maven - 'all' or 'parent' project for aggregation?

  For educational purposes I have set up a project layout like so (flat in order to suite eclipse better): -product | |-parent |-core |-opt |-all Parent contains an aggregate project with core, opt and all. Core implements the mandatory part of the application. Opt is an optional part. All is supposed to combine core with opt, and has these two modules listed as dependencies. I am now trying to make the following artifacts: product-core.jar product-core-src.jar product-core-with-dependencies.jar product-opt.jar product-opt-src.jar product-opt-with-dependencies.jar product-all.jar product-all-src.jar product-all-with-dependencies.jar Most of them are fairly straightforward to produce. I do have some problem with the aggregating artifacts though. I have managed to make the product-all-src.jar with a custom assembly descriptor in the 'all' module which downloads the sources for all non-transitive deps, and this works fine. This technique also allows me to make the product-all-with-dependencies.jar. I however recently found out that you can use the source:aggregate goal in the source plugin to aggregate sources of the entire aggregate project. This is also true for the javadoc plugin, which also aggregates through the usage of the parent project. So I am torn between my 'all' module approach and ditching the 'all' module and just use the 'parent' module for all aggregation. It feels unclean to have some aggregate artifacts produced in 'parent', and others produced in 'all'. Is there a way of making an 'product-all' jar in the parent project, or to aggregate javadoc in the 'all' project? Or should I just keep both? Thanks

In case of publishing of derivative works the original work and author (me) must be mentioned (incl. textual link to my website in a not-very-far-hidden place) and the derivative work must have different name. A derivative work can be closed-source. In every case of commercial (when the end-user is a commercial body (as a company (expect of non-profit companies), an individual entrepreneur or government office)) usage of my work or any of derivative works made by anyone, the end-user, service provider or the derivative author must buy a commercial license from me. I mean no guarantees or resoinsibilities, either expressed or implied... (except the case when one explicitly purchases a support service contract from me and the particular contract specifies a responsibility). Is there a known common license for this case? May it be OSI-approved?

• Error in pom file in Maven project,after importing into eclipse

• How do you fix loading plugins in eclipse 3.5.1 on linux?

  I have two linux boxes. Both Fedora 11 x64. On one, I downloaded the eclipse-java-galileo-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz. I unpacked it to /opt/eclipse-3.5.1/ and used the Install New Software... item to install the SVN team provider and the Polarion SVN connectors. Everything works. On the second, I copied the tar.gar for eclipse there, and then tried to follow the same steps. When I get to the install SVN team provided, eclipse downloads it and claims to install it and asks to restart. I restart and there is no SVN support. The software installer knows its there because I can't reinstall it without uninstalling it. So the questions: Why isn't the plugin/feature loading for the SVN Team Support? Is there a checkbox that I forgot about that enables the plugin? Is there a command line option that will force reload all of the features on the disk? I've tried to install other things like findbugs, but I get the same result. I have no messages in the log file indicating an exception or anything like that.

• Trusted Folder/Drive Picker in the Browser

  I'd like to write a Folder/Drive picker the runs in the browser and allows a user to select files to upload to a webservice. The primary usage would be selecting folders or a whole CD and uploading them to the web with their directory structure in tact. I'm imagining something akin to Jumploader but which automatically enumerates external drives and CDs. I remember a version of Facebook's picture uploader that could do this sort of enumeration and was java-based but it has since been replaced by a much slicker plugin-based architecture. Because the application needs to run at very high trust, I think I'm limited to old-school java applets. Is there another alternative? I'm hesitant to start down the plugin route because of the necessity of writing one for both IE and Mozilla at a minimum. Are there good places to get started there? On the applet front, I built a clunky prototype to demonstrate that I can enumerate devices and list files. It runs fine in the applet viewer but I don't think I have the security settings configured correctly for it to run in the browser at full trust. Currently I don't get any drives back when I run it in the browser. • WordPress website getting hung up for 10-15 seconds

  Problem I have a website (which loads fine): http://testupg.videve.com/ Go to the blog section (and it begins to load, gets hung up, then loads): http://testupg.videve.com/blog/ It's all one WordPress install. The only pages that are getting hung up are the blog page itself and any article page. The video pages load fine etc. What Have I done and noticed. If I disable all plugins, the blog page loads fine. I narrowed it down to DisplayBuddy plugins (Featured posts, Carousel, Slider)...as soon as I enable any single one of them, the site loads slow. The thing that doesn't make sense is, I disabled the sidebar (deleted it from the template) and the article page still loaded slow and it has ZERO instances of this plugin. I disable the plugin and the article page loads fine. How on earth can this be? I am hoping this case above can give just a little bit of insight! One other thing. The video pages use a custom taxonomy so I am wondering if its something to do with the default wordpress taxonomy. Any help is GREATLY appreciated, I have been at this thing for hours and it's time to call in some support. Cheers

  I'm trying to create a new plugin to track popular posts based on views and I have everything done and ready to go, but I can't seem to create a new table using the Wordpress API (I can do it with standard PHP or with phpMyAdmin, but I want this plugin to be self-sufficient). • Complicated API issue with calling assemblies dynamically?

  I have an interesting challenge that I'm wondering if anyone here can give me some direction. I'm writing a .Net windows forms application that runs on a network and uses an SQL Server to save and pull data. I want to offer a mini "plugin" API, where developers can build their own assemblies and implement a specific interface (IDataManipulate). These assemblies then can be used by my application to call the interface functions and do something. I can create assemblies using my API, copy the file to a folder in my local hard drive and configure my application to use Reflection to call a specific function from the implemented interface (IDataManipulate.Execute). The problem: Since the application will be installed in multiple workstations in the network, is impossible to copy the plugin dlls the users will create to each machine. Solutions I tried: Solution 1 Copy the API dll to a network share. Problem: Requires AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute, which requires .Net singing, which I can't force from my users. Solution 2 (preferred) Serialize the dll object, save it to the database, deserialize it and call IDataManipulate.Execute. Problem: After deserialization, I try cast it to a IDataManipulate object but returns an error looking for the actual dll file. Solution 3 Save the dll bytes as byte[] to the database and recreate the dll at the local PC every time the user starts my application. Problem: Dll may have dependencies, which I don't know if I can detect. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  I'm having a problem while using OcaIDE in ocamlbuild mode. I'm trying to compile my own JoCaml sources. According to the JoCaml manual (bottom of page), to use ocamlbuild with JoCaml, I just need to add the -use-jocaml argument to ocamlbuild. Indeed, if I go to the root of my project and write ocamlbuild -use-jocaml foo.native it generates my executable just fine. However, in OcaIDE I get /bin/sh: jocamldep: command not found In OcaIDE, the -use-jocaml flag is passed in the "Other Flags" box (in Project Properties). And that certainly is working, as the complaint is precisely that it doesn't find jocaml stuff. The puzzling thing is that jocaml is installed and can be accessed from any random terminal window. For example, running jocamldep -modules foo.ml > foo.ml.depends on my project does generate the desired dependency file. So, it would seem I would have to configure OcaIDE and tell it where JoCaml executables are or something. This is done for OCaml, for example. But there is no place to do that for JoCaml. And it's really strange that, if jocamldep/jocamlc/etc are all accessible from anywhere, OcaIDE wouldn't be able to pick them. Any ideas? (I am aware I can do an ocamlbuild plugin and pass the flag in a "myocamlbuild.ml" file. I'll probably use that a latter stage after I get familiar with ocamlbuild plugins. But here the question is about OcaIDE. EDIT: Actually, ocamlbuild plugins don't seem to be a solution as, although there is an option -use-jocaml in ocamlbuild to enforce jocaml use (and it works fine), the plugin system doesn't support it, i.e. jocaml is not in the list of options.)

• Do you have to pay for GNU GPL software that is "for sale"?

  I've seen some software (a Joomla component, to be exact) for sale on a web site. The web site says it is licensed under the GNU GPL2. However it also says you need to pay for every site you use the software on (with bulk discounts). I know it's perfectly acceptable to sell software under the GPL, however the license implies that the source code must be distributed at no cost. So is this a legitimate use of the GPL, or is it violating the license? Is it legal to download the software for free (say, from Bittorrent) and use it as I wish?

• Android app crashes on emulator - logCat shows no errors

  I have just added the SherlockActionBar library to my android project. After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. After I run the app, however, the debugger stops, as though it had encountered an exception. However, there are no errors shown in the LogCat output. I just can't wrap my head around what's going on.
