• How to use mount points in MilkShape models?

  I have bought the Warriors & Commoners model pack from Frogames and the pack contains (among other formats) two animated models and several non-animated objects (axe, shield, pilosities, etc.) in MilkShape3D format. I looked at the official "MilkShape 3D Viewer v2.0" (msViewer2.zip at http://www.chumba.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/download.html) source code and implemented loading the model, calculating the joint matrices and everything looks fine. In the model there are several joints that are designated as the "mount points" for the static objects like axe and shield. I now want to "put" the axe into the hand of the animated model, and I couldn't quite figure out how. I put the animated vertices in a VBO that gets updated every frame (I know I should do this with a shader, but I didn't have time to do this yet). I put the static vertices in another VBO that I want to keep static and not updated every frame. I now tried to render the animated vertices first, then use the joint matrix for the "mount joint" to calculate the location of the static object. I tried many things, and what about seems to be right is to transpose the joint matrix, then use glMatrixMult() to transform the modelview matrix. For some objects like the axe this is working, but not for others, e.g. the pilosities. Now my question: How is this generally implemented when using bone/joint models, and especially with MilkShape3D models? Am I on the right track?

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer. • Best way to lay-out the website when sections of it are almost identical

  so, I have a minisite for the mobile application that I did. The mobile application is a public transport (transit) schedule viewer for a particular city (let's call it Foo), and I'm trying to sell it via that minisite. I publish that minisite in www.myawesomeapplication.com/foo/. It has the usual "standard" subpages, like "About", "Compatible phones", "Contact", etc. Now, I have decided to create analogue mobile application for other cities, Bar and Baz. These mobile applications (products) would be almost identical to the one for the Foo city, thus the minisites for those would (should) look very similar too (except for some artwork and Foo = Bar replacement). The question is: what do you think would be the most logical way to lay-out the website in this situation, both from the business and search engine perspective? In other words, should I just duplicate the /foo/ website to /bar/ and /baz/, or would it be better to try to create a single website under root path (/)? I don't want search engine penalties for almost-duplicate information under /foo/, /bar/ and /baz/, and also I don't want a messy, non-localized website (I guess the user is more likely to buy something if he/she sees "This-and-that is the application for NYC, the city you live in", not "This-and-that is the application for city A, city B, ..., NYC, ..., and city Z.")

• Debugger for file I/O development?

  Okay, the question title may be a bit cryptic. But it aptly describes what I'm looking for: I think every experienced coder went through this numerous times: You get a binary file format specification, you implement the reader for it, and… nothing works like expected. So you run your code in the debugger, go execute through the code line by line, every header field is read in seemingly correct, but when it comes to the bulk data, offset and indices no longer match up. What would really help in this situation was a binary file viewer, that shows you the progress of your file pointer, as you step through the code, and ideally would also highlight all memory maps. Then you could see the context of the current I/O operations, most notably those darn "off-by-one" mistakes, which are even more annoying when reading a file. Implementing such a debugger should not be too hard. traces on the process' file descriptors/handles and triggers on the I/O functions, to update the display. Only: I don't know of such a kind of debugger to exist. Do I just lack knowledge about the existance of such a tool, or is there really no such thing?

• Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

  :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

• frequent abnormal shutdowns/system crashes

  It's been almost 5 days since I have installed Ubuntu and almost 6th time that my laptop has been crashed entirely and it shuts down abnormally. Actually, it heats up and I have to wait for 20 odd minutes before I can turn it on again. A message appears that my PC crashed due to overheating which may damage my hard disk. The crashes happened when I tried to open some application that freeze my PC not even giving me enough time to go to system monitor and end process. Sometimes the culprit application which caused crash is Ever-pad, sometime it's team-viewer, sometimes it's some other. This is something very serious. The last crash occurred at 09:14:40. Kindly click here to view system log. I want to stick to Ubuntu and the same laptop as I had serious issues with Windows and I nearly went out to dump my laptop and purchase a more powerful system. • Website Design; SEO Dilemma

  Okay so I designed a website for a restaurant and the design is aimed mostly to entice the viewer by using images of the restaurant's platters and foods. Not to say that text is totally non-existent but the design makes it hard to have enough keywords. Most keywords are found in the ALT attribute of image tags and a couple of headers. The reason as to why I am in this dilemma? I'm still new to web development and at the time I made the design, I didn't really know much about SEO. So I come here in search of help because I have an idea... Would it be good practice to have hidden SPAN blocks that would help me fill with keywords? For example a hidden SPAN would have text in bold to help with SEO. Of course, I will play it safe and not exploit this technique if it works. I have searched that this may be considered spamming by search engines and some companies are taking measures to prevent this. Thanks in advance!

  I'm sorry if this should be placed on stackoverflow instead however seeing as this is graphics related I was hoping you guys could help me: I'm attempting to write a phong shader and currently working on the specular. I came acros the following formula: base*pow(dot(V,R),shininess) and attempted to implement it (V is the posion of the viewer and R the reflective vector). • Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • AngularJS dealing with large data sets (Strategy)

  I am working on developing a personal temperature logging viewer based on my rasppi curl'ing data into my web server's api. Temperatures are taken every 2 seconds and I can have several temperature sensors posting data. Needless to say I will have a lot of data to handle even within the scope of an hour. I have implemented a very simple paging api from the server so the server doesn't timeout and is currently only returning data in 1000 units per call, then paging through the data. I had the idea to intially show say the last 20 minutes of data from a sensor (or all sensors depending on user choices), then allowing the user to select other timeframes from which to show data. The issue comes in when you want to view all sensors or an extended time period (say 24 hours). Is there a best practice of handling this large amount of data? Would it be useful to load those first 20 minutes into the live view and then cache into local storage something like the last 24 hours? I haven't been able to find a decent idea of this in use yet even though there are a lot of ways to take this problem. I am just looking for some suggestions as to what might provide a good balance between good performance and not caching the entire data set on the client side (as beyond a week of data this might not be feasible).

• ADF Logging In Deployed Apps

  Harking back to my series on using the ADF logger and the related  ADF Insider Video, I've had a couple of queries this week about using the logger from Enterprise Manager (EM). I've alluded in those previous materials to how EM can be used but it's evident that folks need a little help.  So in this article, I'll quickly look at how you can switch logging on from the EM console for an application and how you can view the output.  Before we start I'm assuming that you have EM up and running, in my case I have a small test install of Fusion Middleware Patchset 5 with an ADF application deployed to a managed server. Step 1 - Select your Application In the EM navigator select the app you're interested in: At this point you can actually bring up the context ( right mouse click) menu to jump to the logging, but let's do it another way.  Step 2 - Open the Application Deployment Menu At the top of the screen, underneath the application name, you'll find a drop down menu which will take you to the options to view log messages and configure logging, thus: Step 3 - Set your Logging Levels  Just like the log configuration within JDeveloper, we can set up transient or permanent (not recommended!) loggers here. In this case I've filtered the class list down to just oracle.demo, and set the log level to config. You can now go away and do stuff in the app to generate log entries. Step 4 - View the Output  Again from the Application Deployment menu we can jump to the log viewer screen and, as I have here, start to filter down the logging output to the stuff you're interested in.  In this case I've filtered by module name. You'll notice here that you can again look at related log messages. Importantly, you'll also see the name of the log file that holds this message, so it you'd rather analyse the log in more detail offline, through the ODL log analyser in JDeveloper, then you can see which log to download.

• Problem with saving pictures in certain ways [migrated]

  I am making a Garfield comic viewer in C#. I have a button that saves the comic on screen to the computer. However, when I compile it from Visual C# Express, it saves perfectly. When I run the exe file from the directory, I get an unhandled exception message stating "A generic error occurred in GDI+".   In addition to my automated unit, system and integration tests for ASP.NET projects, I like to give my customers something pretty that they can look at and visually see that the web site is behaving properly. I use the Gallio test runner to produce a pretty HTML report, and WatiN (Web Application Testing In .NET) to test the UI and create screenshots. I have a couple of issues with WatiN’s “CaptureWebPageToFile” method, though: It blew up the first (and only) time I tried it, possibly because… It scrolls down to capture the entire web page (I tried it on a very long page), and I usually don’t need that Also, sometimes I don’t need a picture of the whole browser window - I just want a picture of the element that I'm testing (for example, proving that a button has the correct caption). • Securing an ASP.NET MVC 2 Application

  This post attempts to look at some of the methods that can be used to secure an ASP.NET MVC 2 Application called Northwind Traders Human Resources.  The sample code for the project is attached at the bottom of this post. We are going to use a slightly modified Northwind database. The screen capture from SQL server management studio shows the change. I added a new column called Salary, inserted some random salaries for the employees and then turned off AllowNulls.   The reporting relationship for Northwind Employees is shown below.   The requirements for our application are as follows: Employees can see their LastName, FirstName, Title, Address and Salary Employees are allowed to edit only their Address information Employees can see the LastName, FirstName, Title, Address and Salary of their immediate reports Employees cannot see records of non immediate reports.  Employees are allowed to edit only the Salary and Title information of their immediate reports. Employees are not allowed to edit the Address of an immediate report Employees should be authenticated into the system. Employees by default get the “Employee” role. If a user has direct reports, they will also get assigned a “Manager” role. We use a very basic empId/pwd scheme of EmployeeID (1-9) and password test$1. You should never do this in an actual application. The application should protect from Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF). For example, Michael could trick Steven, who is already logged on to the HR website, to load a page which contains a malicious request. where without Steven’s knowledge, a form on the site posts information back to the Northwind HR website using Steven’s credentials. Michael could use this technique to give himself a raise :-) UI Notes The layout of our app looks like so: When Nancy (EmpID 1) signs on, she sees the default page with her details and is allowed to edit her address. If Nancy attempts to view the record of employee Andrew who has an employeeID of 2 (Employees/Edit/2), she will get a “Not Authorized” error page. When Andrew (EmpID 2) signs on, he can edit the address field of his record and change the title and salary of employees that directly report to him. Implementation Notes All controllers inherit from a BaseController. The BaseController currently only has error handling code. When a user signs on, we check to see if they are in a Manager role. And as luck would have it, Oracle is staying ahead of these trends (but we’ll talk about that later). There were a few surprises, some stats to solidify what you likely already know, and Meeker’s novel observations about where we are all going. What interested me the most is not only how people are engaging in their personal lives, but how they engage with brands. As you could probably predict, Internet usage growth is slowing while tablet user and mobile data traffic growth continue their meteoric rise around the globe, with tremendous growth in underpenetrated markets like China, India, Brazil and Indonesia. Now hold those the “Internet is dead” comments. Keep in mind there’s still plenty of room to grow, and a multiscreen model is Meeker’s vision for our future. Despite 1.5x YOY growth for mobile traffic, mobile still only makes up about 23% of all traffic today. With tablet shipments easily outpacing figures for PCs even at their height (in 2007), mobile will only continue on it’s path, but won’t be everything to everyone. Mobile won’t replace every touchpoint, it’s just created our shorter attention spans and demand for simpler, more personal experiences. As Meeker points out TVs, tablets, PCs, and smartphones are used for different activities at present, but lines will blur (for example, 84% of smartphones owners use their device while watching TV). Day-to-day activities are being re-imagining through simple, beautiful user experiences. It seems like every day I discover a new way a brand/site/app made the most mundane or mounting task enjoyable and frictionless – and I’m not alone. Meeker points out the evolution of how we do everything from how we communicate, get information, use money, meet someone, get places, order a meal, and consume media is all done through new user interfaces that make day-to-day tasks simpler. This movement has caused just about everyone’s patience for a poor UX to take a nosedive. And it’s not just the digital user experience, technology is making a lot of people’s offline lives easier, and less expensive. Today 47% of online shopping utilizes free shipping— nearly half. And Meeker predicts same day local delivery will be the “next big thing” (and you can take a guess on who will own that). Content, Community and Commerce creates the “Internet Trifecta.” Meeker pointed out that when content, communities and commerce occur in a single experience it’s embraced by consumers, which translates to big dollars for brands. The magic happens when consumers can get inspired, research, and buy in a single experience. As the buying cycle has changed and touchpoints (Web, mobile, social, store) are no longer tied to “roles” or steps in the customer journey, brands must make all experiences (content and commerce) available in a single, adaptable experience. And in what Meeker calls the “biggest re-imagination of all:” consumers enabled with smartphones and sensors are creating troves of findable and sharable data, which she says is in the early stages, by growing rapidly. She notes that transparency and patterns of consumers with this hardware (FYI - there are up to 10 sensors embedded in smartphones now) has created a Big Data treasure chest to be mined to improve business and the life of the consumer. The opportunities are endless. So what does it all mean for a company doing business online? Start thinking about how you can: Re-imagine your experience. Not your online experience and your mobile experience and your social experience – your overall experience. When consumers can research, buy, and advocate from anywhere (and their attention spans are at an all-time low) channels don’t exist. Enable simple and beautiful interactions informed by all of the online and offline data you leverage across your enterprise. Ethically leverage the endless supply of data (user generated content, clicks, purchases, in-store behavior, social activity) to make experiences more beautiful, more accurate, and more personalized (not to mention, more lucrative for you). Re-imagine content and commerce. Content and commerce must co-exist in a single destination where shoppers can get inspired, explore, research, share, and purchase in a collective experience. Think of how you can deliver an experience where all types of experiences (brand stories and commerce) adapt to every customer need. (Look for more on this topic coming soon). Re-imagine your reach. Look to Meeker’s findings to see how the global appetite for digital experiences is growing, but under-served in many places (i.e.: India, Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil, Philippines, etc.). Growing your online business to a new geography doesn’t have to mean starting from scratch or having an entirely new team manage the new endeavor. Expand using what you’ve already built in a multisite framework, with global language support. And of course, make sure it’s optimized for mobile! Re-imagine the possible. After every Meeker report, I’m always left with the thought “we are just at the beginning.” Everyday there is more data, more possibilities, more online consumers, and more opportunities to use new latest technology to get closer to your customers and be more successful. • SSH new connection begins to hang (not reject or terminate) after a day or so on Ubuntu 13.04 server

  Recently we upgraded the server from 12.04 LTS server to 13.04. All was well, including after a reboot. With all packages updated we began to see a strange issue, ssh works for a day or so (unclear on timing) then a later request for SSH hangs (cannot ctrl+c, nothing). • B2B and B2C Commerce are alike… but a little different – Oracle Commerce named Leader in Forrester B2B Commerce Wave

  We weren’t surprised to see Oracle Commerce positioned as a Leader in Forrester’s first Commerce Wave focused on B2B, released earlier this month. The reports validates much of what we’ve heard from our largest customers – the world’s largest distribution, manufacturing and high-tech customers who sell billions of dollars of goods and services to other businesses through their Web channels. More importantly, the report confirms something very important: B2B and B2C Commerce are alike… but a little different. B2B and B2C Commerce are alike… Clearly, B2C experiences have set expectations for B2B. Every B2B buyer is a consumer at home and brings the same expectations to a website selling electronic components, aftermarket parts, or MRO products. Forrester calls these rich consumer-based capabilities that help B2B customers do their jobs “table stakes”: search & navigation, promotions, cross-channel commerce and mobile: “Whether they are just beginning to sell online or are in the late stages of launching a next-generation site, B2B eCommerce operations today must: offer a customer experience standard comparable to what leading b2c sites now offer; address the growing influence that mobile devices are having in the workplace; make a qualitative and quantitative business case that drives sustained investment.” Just five years ago, many of our B2B customers’ online business comprised only 5-10% of their total revenue. Today, when we speak to those same brands, we hear about double and triple digit growth in their online channels. Many have seen the percentage of the business they perform in their web channels cross the 30-50% threshold. You can hear first-hand from several Oracle Commerce B2B customers about the success they are seeing, and what they’re trying to accomplish (Carolina Biological, Premier Farnell, DeliXL, Elsevier). This momentum is likely the reason Forrester broke out the separate B2B Commerce Wave from the B2C Wave. In fact, B2B is becoming the larger force in commerce, expected to collect twice the online dollars of B2C this year ($559 billion). But a little different… Despite the similarities, there is a key and very important difference between B2C and B2B. Unlike a consumer shopping for shoes, a business shopper buying from a distributor or manufacturer is coming to the Web channel as a part of their job. So in addition to a rich, consumer-like experience this shopper expects, these B2B buyers need quoting tools and complex pricing capabilities, like eProcurement, bulk order entry, and other self-service tools such as account, contract and organization management.  Forrester also is emphasizing three additional “back-end” tools and capabilities their clients say they need to drive growth in their B2B online channels: i) product information management (PIM), which provides a single system of record for large part lists and product catalogs; ii) web content management (WCM), needed to manage large volumes of unstructured marketing information, and iii) order management systems (OMS), which manage and orchestrate the complex B2B order life cycle from quote through approval, submission to manufacturing, distribution and delivery.  We would like to expand on each of these 3 areas: As Forrester highlights, back-end PIM is definitely needed by B2B Commerce providers. Most B2B companies have made significant investments in enterprise-grade PIMs, given the importance of product data management for aggregation and syndication of content, product attribution, analytics, and handling of complex workflows. While in principle it may sound appealing to have a PIM as part of a commerce offering (especially for SMBs who have to do more with less), our customers have typically found that PIM in a commerce platform is largely redundant with what they already have in-place, and is not fully-featured or robust enough to handle the complexity of the product data sets that B2B distributors and manufacturers usually handle. To meet the PIM needs for commerce, Oracle offers enterprise PIM (Product Hub/Fusion PIM) and a robust enterprise data quality product (EDQP) integrated with the Oracle Commerce solution. These are key differentiators of our offering and these capabilities are becoming even more tightly integrated with Oracle Commerce over time. For Commerce, what customers really need is a robust product catalog and content management system for enabling business users to further enrich and ready catalog and content data to be presented and sold online.  This has been a significant area of investment in the Oracle Commerce platform , which continue to get stronger. We see this combination of capabilities as best meeting the needs of our customers for a commerce platform without adding a largely redundant, less functional PIM in the commerce front-end.   On the topic of web content management, we were pleased to see Forrester recognize Oracle’s unique functional capabilities in this area and the “unique opportunity in the market to lead the convergence of commerce and content management with the amalgamation of Oracle Commerce with WebCenter Sites (formally FatWire).” Strong content management capabilities are critical for distributors and manufacturers who are frequently serving an engineering audience coming to their websites to conduct product research in search of technical data sheets, drawings, videos and more. The convergence of content, commerce, and experience is critical for B2B brands selling online. Regarding order management, Forrester notes that many businesses use their existing back-end enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to manage order life cycles.  We hear the same from most of our B2B customers, as they already have an ERP system—if not several of them—and are not interested in yet another one.  So what do we take away from the Wave results? Forrester notes that the Oracle Commerce Platform “has always had strong B2B commerce capabilities and Oracle has an exhaustive list of B2B customers using the solution.”  What makes us excited about developing leading B2B solutions are the close relationships with our customers and the clear opportunity in the market – which we’ll address in an exciting new release in the coming months.
