• How to manage and capture database changes across several developers?

  We have three developers and one tester all working against the same database. We change the schema of the database quite often, and every time we do it tends to have a ripple effect of headaches for everyone else. Are there good practices in place for .NET oriented development against MS SQL Server 2008 for managing this? I am thinking something similar to Rails Migrations and each dev and tester has their own local database. Or is that overkill? It'd at least be nice to have separate test and dev databases, but currently manually keeping two databases in sync is probably worse than our current predicament. LiquiBase seems promising, has anyone successfully used it in a similar environment? Or are there better approaches? We are using SQL Server 2008, VS 2008 and .NET 3.5 if that matters at all.

• multiple modules under one solution

  I have a project under which various distributed applications are placed; the whole project is under a single dll. Hence, if any issue occurs we need to re-build the whole application to run or import to our server. I am looking for the best possible way to make the build process faster and also bit worried about the size of the DLL. Is it a good way to have separate dll for all the modules or split the application in multiple projects??? Can, anyone suggest the best way or example to deal with this situation. • NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate in a second view controller (not firing?)

  I am running into an issue similar to the one described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1319940/nsfetchedresultscontrollerdelegate-not-firing (the delegate for my NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate are not being called on my second view controller) I can't seem to get the proposed solutions to work. I have a main view that loads information from Core Data just fine, but when it pushes a separate controller (and passes the managed object to it), the delegate methods won't fire. I've read about 'mergeChangesFromContextDidSaveNotification' but I don't understand how to synchronize the two manage objects and/or get the delegate methods to be called. • calling a function or communicating from one browser window to another using Jquery / javascript

  Hello, I am designing a web site that plays music. The music player itself will be in a separate window along with the now playing list. I want to be able to refresh the now playing list when a new song is added to it from the main window. Essentially I need to figure out how to communicate between the two windows. I was only able to find one plugin on line that defines the player page as a child of the main page but then this reference would be lost after the parent page i.e my main page was refreshed. So this was not very useful to me and I'm kinda lost atm. • wpf manually generate TreeViewItem container

  I am creating a TreeView at runtime. It has several nodes(TreeViewItem), each one having a name. Initially it is collapsed. A separate comboBox displays Names of all TreeViewItem. I have to highlight a TreeViewItem based on the Name selected. I am using a recursive function and gets the TreeViewItem container like this: if (parent.ItemContainerGenerator.Status != GeneratorStatus.ContainersGenerated) continue; TreeViewItem container = parent.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem(child).As<TreeViewItem>(); but it is parent.ItemContainerGenerator.Status = GeneratorStatus.NotStarted for all the collapsed items. How can I generate containers for them manually(Without expanding them)?

• EXTEND_MODEL_CASES SQL 2005 workaround

  Hi, I have a time series based mining model in SQL 2005 Analysis Serveries. I understand in 2008 you can do what if analysis by using EXTEND_MODEL_CASES with a Natural Prediction Join. I'm looking for a workaround or some method of doing the same thing but with 2005. My time series has 3 inputs, and one predict_only. I'd like to use the prediction function to see what types of prediction it makes for 6-12 time intervals in the future with inputs in a separate table. Is there any way to do this or something similar? Thanks

• Altering CSS for nav bar images to accomodate IE

  My horizontal nav bar is populated with images for the links that are coming from one image that includes all the sub-images; each nav item image is identified by the pixel location within the larger image. This works perfectly fine in Firefox and Safari, but in IE, all of the images are misplaced too low within the nav bar (can only barely see the tops of the words). Two questions: How do I fix this in the css so it is back-compatible with the more recent versions (and current versions) of IE Do I need a separate IE stylesheet? Thanks!

• Multiple Socket Connections

  I need to write a server which accepts connections from multiple client machines, maintains track of connected clients and sends individual clients data as necessary. Sometimes, all clients may be contacted at once with the same message, other times, it may be one individual client or a group of clients. Since I need confirmation that the clients received the information and don't want to build an ACK structure for a UDP connection, I decided to use a TCP streaming method. However, I've been struggling to understand how to maintain multiple connections and keep them idle. I seem to have three options. Use a fork for each incoming connection to create a separate child process, use pthread_create to create an entire new thread for each process, or use select() to wait on all open socket IDs for a connection. Recommendations as to how to attack this? I've begun working with pthreads but since performance will likely not be an issue, multicore processing is not necessary and perhaps there is a simpler way.

• Is there a Java equivalent to libevent?

  I've written a high-throughput server that handles each request in its own thread. For requests coming in it is occasionally necessary to do RPCs to one or more back-ends. These back-end RPCs are handled by a separate queue and thread-pool, which provides some bounding on the number of threads created and the maximum number of connections to the back-end (it does some caching to reuse clients and save the overhead of constantly creating connections). Having done all this, though, I'm beginning to think an event-based architecture would be more efficient. In searching around I haven't found any equivalents to libevent for Java, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place? Mina-statemachine from Apache was the closest thing I found, but it looks more verbose than I need and there's no real release available. Any suggestions?

• JBoss Seam: components injected into POJOs, but not Session Beans

  I have a Seam component that handles login, with the name "authenticator": @Name("authenticator") public class AuthenticatorAction implements Authenticator { @PersistenceContext private EntityManager em; @In(required=false) @Out(required=false, scope = SESSION) private User user; public boolean authenticate(){ ... } } This works just fine, Seam injects the EntityManager instance. However, as soon as I add the @Stateless annotation, none of the injection happens! In this case, the EntityManager instance is null upon entry to the authenticate() method. Another interesting note is that with a separate stateful session bean I have, the Logger instance in that class is only injected if I make it static. If i have it non-static, it is not injected. Thats fine for the logger, but for stateless session beans like that, I obviously can't have static member variables for these components. I'm confused because this authenticator is exactly how it is in the Seam booking example: a stateless session bean with a private member variable being injected. Any ideas?

  Hi there, How can I make my static-file root directories relative to my application root folder (instead of a hard-coded path)? In accordance with CP instructions (http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/StaticContent) I have tried the following in my configuration file: tree.cpapp = cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root()) tools.staticdir.root = cpapp.current_dir but when I run cherrpy.quickstart(rootclass, script_name='/', config=config_file) I get the following error builtins.ValueError: ("Config error in section: 'global', option: 'tree.cpapp', value: 'cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root())'. Config values must be valid Python.", 'TypeError', ("unrepr could not resolve the name 'cpapp'",)) I know I can do configuration from within the main.py file just before quickstart is called (eg. using os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(file))), but I prefer using the idea of a separate configuration file if possible. Any help would be appreciated (in case it is relevant, I am using CP 3.2 with Python 3.1) TIA Alan

• Method chaining and exceptions in C#

  If I have a method chain like the following: var abc = new ABC(); abc.method1() .method2() .methodThrowsException() .method3() ; assuming I've defined method1(), method2() and method3() as public ABC method1() { return this; } and methodThrowsException() as public ABC method3() { throw new ArgumentException(); } When running the code, is it possible to know which specific line of code has thrown the Exception, or will it just consider all the method chaining as just one line? I've done a simple test and it seems it considers them all as just one line but Method Chaining says Putting methods on separate lines also makes debugging easier as error messages and debugger control is usually on a line by line basis. Am I missing something, or does that just not apply to C#? Thanks

  Well, I tried to ask this question as a comment on this question, but I thought that maybe no one will notice it, so I decided to ask it as a separate one. The question is about how to do real-time GPS tracking system things; if we have the following scenario: Rather than connecting a GPS receiver to a PC, the user will have a mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver. Location data will be sent over mobile network using GPRS data connection to a server side. The data will be processed and a KML path file will be created and updated on time intervals and used to track the user using Google Earth. The question is: what is the best method to accomplish this scenario for the server side; is it a web service, a web application, a windows service, a windows application or what exactly? Taking into account that the system will serve a number of users simultaneously, and that more users may use the system in the future(scalability issues). • Java: separating JAR versions

  I'm developing a Java plugin for an existing Java program. The existing program uses a specific version of eclipse.uml2.* and my plugin does too. Unfortunately I need a newer version for my plugin. In order to run the plugin, I need to export it into a Jar file (with all jars packed). Then the program executes it. But somehow the new eclipse.uml2.* seem to interfere with the program - it crashes. Is there a way to "separate" both versions of the jar files?

  Hi, Say I have a list of Employee IDs from one data source and a separate data source with a list of Employees, with their ID, Surname, FirstName, etc. Is it possible in XAML only to get the Employee's name from the second data source and display it next to the ID, using something like this (with the syntax corrected)?.. <TextBlock x:Name="EmployeeID" Text="{Binding ID}"></TextBlock> <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" DataContext="{StaticResource EmployeeList[**where ID = {Binding ID}**]}" Text="{Binding Surname}"/> I'm thinking back to my days using XML and XSLT with XPath to achieve the kind of thing shown above. Is this kind of thing possible in XAML? Or do I need to 'denormalize' the data first in code, into one consolidated list? It seems like it should be possible to do this simple task using XAML only, but I can't quite get my head around how you would switch the DataContext correctly and what the syntax would be to achieve this. • Java annotations for design patterns?

  Is there a project that maintains annotations for patterns? For example, when I write a builder, I want to mark it with @Builder. Annotating in this way immediately provides a clear idea of what the code implements. Also, the Javadoc of the @Builder annotation can reference explanations of the builder pattern. Furthermore, navigating from the Javadoc of a builder implementation to @Builder Javadoc is made easy by annotating @Builder with @Documented. I've being slowing accumulating a small set of such annotations for patterns and idioms that I have in my code, but I'd like to leverage a more complete existing project if it exists. If there is no such project, maybe I can share what I have by spinning it off to a separate pattern/idiom annotation project. • Localization of strings in static lib

  I have a project that uses a static library (SL). In that SL, there are a couple of strings I'd like to localize and the project includes all of the localization files. The localization works just fine when storing all text translations in the same file. The thing is that I'd like to separate the SL strings from the other strings. I have tried to put two different *.strings files (Localizable.strings and Localizable2.strings) in the language folder of interest but that did not work. I have also tried to use two *.strings file with the same name (Localizable.strings) but with different paths. It didn't work either. It seems that only one localization file is supported, right? Could anyone suggest a good way of doing this? I'm using SDK 3.2 beta 2.

• visualize irregular data in vtk

  I have an irregular data, x dimension - 384, y dimension - 256 and z dimension 64. Now these coordinates are stored in 3 separate binary files and i have a data file having a data value for these points. I want to know, how can i represent such data to be easily visualized in vtk. Till now we were using AVS which has fld files, which can read such data easily. I dont know how to do it in vtk. Would appreciate any pointers in this direction.

• Comparing ASP.Net Framework to Cakephp, Zend , Ruby on Rails

  I am a PHP developer migrating to C# ASP.Net Framework. As of right now, I am experienced in using Php for developing sites and I use CakePhp and Zend framework as my RAD tools to help me produce better applications. As I move over to ASP.NET, I have this view that C# ASP.Net framework itself is already a RAD tool and is equivalent to using Cakephp, Zend, or even Ruby on Rails. So I really shouldn't have no concerns trying to find a separate library for ASP.NET that will help me produce better applications. To me, in a sense the ASP.NET is already like a MVC cause it seperates the model from the view and the methods are almost like controllers. So as far as having the best tools are concerned, should I be satisfied with just using ASP.NET as my RAD tool.

  Hello. Is it possible to ignore set and get when I'm assigning to or retrieving a value? In specific, I'm inheriting from a class that has a property declared like this: public Int32 Value { get; set; } What I'd like to do is to override it and do something useful in those set and get's. The problem appears when I override it, I also have to manually assign, or return the value from the property. If I do something like this: override public Int32 Value { get { return this.Value; } set { this.Value = value; // do something useful } Then I'm creating an infinite loop. Is there a way to set or get the value without invoking the code in set and get, or do I have to make a separate name for the actual variable?

• Doing Forms With Just Windows SharePoint Services 3.0?

  For the most part my organization is happy with WSS 3.0 (no upgrading to MOSS) with one exception, there is really just one form we'd like to put up somehow. It's fairly big form (basically change requests for IT services, on paper it's easily 2 full 8.5 by 11 pages). We thought about Custom ASP.NET coding as a separate stand-alone page or maybe as a web part. What have other people out there done? MOSS and Infopath is not really an option as it really is too expensive for us at this time. Thanks in advance!

  I am writing a plugin for another application. I want to support the plugin on multiple platforms, so I am strongly considering using Qt. The plugin needs to be able to show some basic GUI. The plugin interface does not in any way handle GUI - it is just a simple DLL/shared library specified with a C-header file. Can I use Qt inside such a shared library? The calling application might or might not be using Qt itself. Any hints on what to do? Do I need to run a QApplication event-loop in a separate thread? Or can I just call the event-loop myself while waiting for input? (I only need modal dialogs).

  Hi all I have the following string "3/4Ton". I want to split it as -- word[1] = 3/4 and word[2] = Ton. Right now my piece of code looks like this:- Pattern p = Pattern.compile("[A-Z]{1}[a-z]+"); Matcher m = p.matcher(line); while(m.find()){ System.out.println("The word --> "+m.group()); } It carries out the needed task of splitting the string based on capital letters like:- String = MachineryInput word[1] = Machinery , word[2] = Input The only problem is it does not preserve, numbers or abbreviations or sequences of capital letters which are not meant to be separate words. Could some one help me out with my regular expression coding problem. Thanks in advance...
