    We have just had a graduate join the team with the end aim of assisting out our very busy DBA. He has only a basic SQL knowledge from his degree so we are looking for a really good getting started book preferably based on MS SQL server. Purchase Update: Thanks to the replies we have now purchased Head First SQL to review what he already knows and Beginning SQL Server 2005 Programming to enhance these skills. Further down the page you can see my full review of the books for our needs. However still feel free to post more books as others may find them useful!

  • Problem with the row count transform

    Hi, I currently deployed an SSIS package (Developed on the 2005 version) (developed on my local server) in a pre production environment for testing. I have used the Row count transform to get a count of good/bad records. It works fine on my local system . However when i deploy this on the pre prod server, the row count does not work! (as in it does not recognize the vairbales i have assigned to the relevant transofm - no drop down abvaliable in the variables attribute part. tried deleting and adding a new transoform.. no luck. Strangely this does not work for any of the other packages also present/deployed on the same server (tried this out by dropping an rc tramsform onto an existing package... same problem) Any suggestions?   • Help with my application please! Can’t open image(s) with error: External component has thrown an ex

    I have an application written in C# I believe and it adds images to a SQL Server 2005 Database. It requires .NET 3.5 to be installed on my computer. I installed .NET 3.5 and setup a database. It runs fine but then once it gets to image 100 when running on one computer, It stops and gives me this error: Can't open image(s) with error: External component has thrown an exception.... When I run the program on my own computer I am able to reach 300 images but then it stops after 300 images and gives me Can't open image(s) with error: External component has thrown an exception.... error once again. please help!

  • Copying just the data from one Database to another

    I'm not sure if this is the site for this question or not [if so put in the comment or vote to move it] How can I copy only the data from one database to another within the same server on SQL Server 2005? The two databases have the same schema but not the same data. I'm trying to get the data from one database to another. I am not able to restore from a snapshot [that screws over the security settings on the database]. I'm not able to use the import data wizard, because that is trying to copy over schema data as well.

  • Linq to SQL DateTime values are local (Kind=Unspecified) - How do I make it UTC?

    Isn't there a (simple) way to tell Linq To SQL classes that a particular DateTime property should be considered as UTC (i.e. having the Kind property of the DateTime type to be Utc by default), or is there a 'clean' workaround? The time zone on my app-server is not the same as the SQL 2005 Server (cannot change any), and none is UTC. When I persist a property of type DateTime to the dB I use the UTC value (so the value in the db column is UTC), but when I read the values back (using Linq To SQL) I get the .Kind property of the DateTime value to be 'Unspecified'. The problem is that when I 'convert' it to UTC it is 4 hours off. This also means that when it is serialized it it ends up on the client side with a 4 hour wrong offset (since it is serialized using the UTC).

I am planning to add a TimeStamp column in each table. While updating the tables I will check that the TimeStamp column is same, as it was selected. Will this approach be suffice?     I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 new clean install , not a VM, that I have added to a Windows Server 2003 based domain using my account which has domain admin rights. The domain functional level is 2003. I performed a clean install of SQL Server 2008 R2 using my account which has domain admin rights. The installation completed without any errors. I logged into SSMS locally and attempted to add another domain account by clicking Search, Advanced and finding the user in the domain. When I return to the "Dialog - New" window and click OK I receive the following error: Create failed for Login 'Domain\User'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Windows NT user or group 'Domain\User' not found. Check the name again. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15401) I have verified that the firewall is off, tried adding a different domain user, tried using SA to add a user, installed the hotfix for KB 976494 and verified that the Local Security Policy for Domain Member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel Domain Member: Digitally encrypt secure channel Domain Member: Digitally sign secure channel are disabled none of which have made a difference. I can RDP to a Server 2003 server running SQL 2008 and add the same domain user without issue. Also if I try to connect with SSMS to the sql server from another system on the domain using my account I get the following error: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) and on the database server I see the following in the security event log: An account failed to log on. Subject: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: - Account Domain: - Logon ID: 0x0 Logon Type: 3 Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: myUserName Account Domain: MYDOMAIN Failure Information: Failure Reason: An Error occured during Logon. I want the machine to be snappy and responsive even when doing a reasonable amount of Development work. I want to spend what it takes for this, but I don't want to go overboard spending more than I need to. I won't be playing many games or graphics processing so i won't need a monster of a machine.   • DataTable identity column not set after DataAdapter.Update/Refresh on table with "instead of"-trigge

    Within our unit tests we use plain ADO.NET (DataTable, DataAdapter) for preparing the database resp. checking the results, while the tested components themselves run under NHibernate 2.1. .NET version is 3.5, SqlServer version is 2005. The database tables have identity columns as primary keys. Some tables apply instead-of-insert/update triggers (this is due to backward compatibility, nothing I can change). The triggers generally work like this: create trigger dbo.emp_insert on dbo.emp instead of insert as begin set nocount on insert into emp ... select @@identity end The insert statement issued by the ADO.NET DataAdapter (generated on-the-fly by a thin ADO.NET wrapper) tries to retrieve the identity value back into the DataRow: exec sp_executesql N' insert into emp (...) values (...); select id, ... from emp where id = @@identity ' But the DataRow's id-Column is still 0. When I remove the trigger temporarily, it works fine - the id-Column then holds the identity value set by the database. NHibernate on the other hand uses this kind of insert statement: exec sp_executesql N' insert into emp (...) values (...); select scope_identity() ' This works, the NHibernate POCO has its id property correctly set right after flushing. Which seems a little bit counter-intuitive to me, as I expected the trigger to run in a different scope, hence @@identity should be a better fit than scope_identity(). So I thought no problem, I will apply scope_identity() instead of @@identity under ADO.NET as well. But this has no effect, the DataRow value is still not updated accordingly. And now for the best part: When I copy and paste those two statements from SqlServer profiler into a Management Studio query (that is including "exec sp_executesql"), and run them there, the results seem to be inverse! There the ADO.NET version works, and the NHibernate version doesn't (select scope_identity() returns null). I tried several times to verify, but to no avail. Of course this just shows the resultset coming from the database, whatever happens inside NHibernate and ADO.NET is another topic. Also, several session properties defined by T-SQL SET are different in the two scenarios (Management Studio query vs. application at runtime) This is a real puzzle to me. I would be happy about any insights on that. Thank you!
