  • How can I build this payment receipt/booking application?

    I'm planning to build a payment receipt/booking application for a media company with several branches in different locations. The application should be able to move data across the network/internet to a central database where the administrator/accountant in a different location will be able to see the result of the entire job for the day from each branch. Application will run on windows environment. Will be able to send result of the booking to a Point Of Sales printer for print output. Now, I'm confused about choosing the right programming language to accomplish this task. I'm between beginner/intermediate level in PHP, I know HTML/CSS and JavaScript. I have tried to do this in PHP but, I'm face with several challenges and I fear for the POS part since PHP application run on the web browser. I don't know if python will be best suited for this and how long will it take someone with my experience level to pick up python. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

  • W520 External monitor setup with Ubuntu 12.10

    I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64-Bit Desktop on my Lenovo W520. It looks like there are a lot of challenges around making it work with out of the box Nouveau drivers or propriety Nvidia drivers or Intel GPU. I looked at couple of notes on how to make it work with Bumblebee with Optimus Nvidia. None of them seems to work for 12.10. Anybody has a solid answer on this? It seems like a lot of people are suffering from this. Here is my xrandr output. Let me know if you need any additional information.   • What do Embedded Software Developers do on a day to day basis?

    Edit: I am not asking how to program embedded systems. I am asking how it is done in a practical business setting. I have searched for hours for information on what software developers actually do. More specifically, what coding challenges would one experience daily (e.g. code examples (although obviously not too large), specifics)? I am interested in Linux based embedded systems mainly, but any software development would be helpful (in the C/C++/Assembly areas). Also, regarding this, a distinction between junior, intermediate and senior developers would be helpful. Also, what is the best place to prepare for such things before getting a job for the first time?

  • How to use NVIDIA GeForce M310 on Ubuntu 12.10 running as guest in Virtualbox?

    Last couple of weeks played around with Ubuntu 12.10. This is running as a guest on Virtualbox hosted at Windows 7. There have been some challenges with the Unity 3D stuff. Particular due to not supporting X11 release 1.13 till very recently. Since today we are able to download Virtualbox version 4.2.2 which has through guest additions also support for X11 release 1.13. SO far great work everybody. Since Unity now only runs in 3D mode it would be nice to access the graphics card directly from Virtualbox. lshw -c display shows: VGA compatible controller; product: VirtualBox Graphics Adapter. QUESTION: how to get the 3D and other graphics directly supported by the hardware ie Nvidia GeForce M310

  • Looking for more details about "Group varint encoding/decoding" presented in Jeff's slides

    I noticed that in Jeff's slides "Challenges in Building Large-Scale Information Retrieval Systems", which can also be downloaded here: http://research.google.com/people/jeff/WSDM09-keynote.pdf, a method of integers compression called "group varint encoding" was mentioned. It was said much faster than 7 bits per byte integer encoding (2X more). I am very interested in this and looking for an implementation of this, or any more details that could help me implement this by myself. I am not a pro and new to this, and any help is welcome!

  • Replacement for C low level programming?

    So C obviously has a pretty dominant low level programming stronghold.....but is anything coming out that challenges/wants to replace it? Python/C#/etc all seem to be aimed at very high level, but when it comes down to nitty-gritty low level stuff C seems to be king and I haven't seen much "try" to replace that? Is there anything out there, or does learning C for low level stuff seem to be the standard?

Because this has to go out to HTML, and the user has to be able to select the text on the screen, I can't do anything like hidden divs or hidden input fields. The only data I will have is the character range selected on screen. To be specific, this is what it looks like: 1 0:00 --> 0:05 He was bored. So bored.     I am designing a website for a client, and I am trying to get two side-by-side DIVs to adjust to 100% of their container. I've got the side-by-side done, but I can't get the right DIV to be the same height as the left one.     Hi, just set up FirePHP and using a framework called Qcodo / Qcubed. Has anyone heard of these on SO? Been having challenges debugging -- trying to do a fairly simple new() and save() and then output via Ajax but not getting any kind of responsiveness from errors. Any help for us, two of us have checked it out but can't seem to get a response. Thanks!
