  • Should i keep #wrapper{ width:100%} in print css?

    - by metal-gear-solid
Should i keep #wrapper{ width:100%} in print css? because on screen my design is a fixed width design 960 px. but there are so many paper type and sizes in the world and anybody can take print on any size paper, bigger and smaller. So if in print css i do not specify relative width then i think print of page will cut of from right size if user will take print on the paper size which can smaller or larger width than my site #wrapper width (960px). then it can create problem. http://www.dpandi.com/paper/index.html printer also leave some margin when printing. So should keep everything is relative size in print css?

  • Rack layout for future growth

    - by bleything
    We're getting ready to move to a new colo facility and I'm designing the rack layout. While we have a full rack, we only have 12U worth of hardware right now: 1x 1U switch 7x 1U servers 1x 2U server 1x 2U disk shelf The colo facility requires us to front-mount the switch and use a 1U brush strip, so we'll be using a total of 13U of space. Regarding growth, I'm reasonably sure we'll be adding another 4U in servers, 1-2U of network gear, and 2-4U of storage in the mid-term. Specific questions I'm hoping to get help with: where should I mount the switch? the LEDs are on top... should I group the servers by function with space for adding new machines? as an alternative, should I group servers based on whether they are production or staging? where in the rack should I start? in the middle? at the top? at the bottom? equally spaced? Here's a silly little ASCII diagram of what I'm thinking right now. Please feel free to tear my design apart, I've really no idea what I'm doing :) Any advice is very welcome. edit: to be clear, the colo is providing redundant power with UPS and generator, so that's why there's no power gear in the plan, except for the 0U PDU that I didn't diagram. 42 | -- switch ---------------------- 41 | -- brush strip ----------------- 40 | ~~ reserved for second switch ~~ 39 | ~~ reserved for firewall ~~~~~~~ 38 | 37 | -- admin01 --------------------- 36 | 35 | -- vm01 ------------------------ 34 | -- vm02 ------------------------ 33 | ~~ reserved for vm03 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 32 | ~~ reserved for vm04 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 31 | ~~ reserved for vm05 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 30 | 29 | -- web01 ----------------------- 28 | -- web02 ----------------------- 27 | ~~ reserved for web03 ~~~~~~~~~~ 26 | ~~ reserved for web04 ~~~~~~~~~~ 25 | 24 | 23 | 22 | 21 | 20 | 19 | 18 | 17 | 16 | -- db01 ------------------------ 15 | +- disks ----------------------+ 14 | +------------------------------+ 13 | ~~ reserved for more ~~~~~~~~~~~ 12 | ~~ db01 disks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11 | 10 | +- db02 -----------------------+ 9 | +------------------------------+ 8 | ~~ reserved for db02 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 7 | ~~ disks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6 | ~~ reserved for more ~~~~~~~~~~~ 5 | ~~ db02 disks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |

  • View Mobile Websites in Windows with Safari 4 Developer Tools

    - by Matthew Guay
Want to try out mobile websites designed for the iPhone and other mobile devices on your PC?  Safari 4 for Windows lets you do this easily with their developer tools. By default, Safari will show standard desktop websites.  But by making a simple change, you can switch it to work like Safari Mobile on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Getting Started First make sure you have Safari 4 for Windows installed.  You can download Safari directly (link below) and install it as usual.   Or if you already have another Apple program installed, such as QuickTime or iTunes, then you can install it from Apple Software update.  Simply enter apple software update in the Start menu search box. And then select Safari 4 from the list of new software available.  Click Install to automatically download and install Safari. Accept the license Agreement, and then Safari will automatically install. Once this is finished, Safari will be ready to use. View Mobile Sites in Safari First, we need to enable the developer tools.  Click the gear icon on the toolbar, and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab, and then check the box that says “Show Develop menu in menu bar”. Once you’ve closed your settings box, click the page icon, select Develop, then User Agent, and then choose one of the Mobile Safari settings.  In our test we chose Mobile Safari 3.1.2 – iPhone. To make your browser emulate a mobile device better, you can hide the bookmarks and tab bar to have a more streamlined interface. Click the Gear icon, and select “Hide Bookmarks Bar”, and then repeat and click “Hide Tab Bar”. You can also shrink your window to be closer to the size of a mobile device screen.  Once you’ve done these things, Safari should look similar to this screenshot.  Here we have loaded Google.com, and you can see it in its iPhone-style interface. Simply enter any website into the address bar, and it will load in its mobile interface if it has one.  Here is Google’s other mobile offerings, right inside Windows. Gmail loads messages with the default iPhone interface. One especially interesting mobile site is Apple’s online iPhone User Guide.  When loaded in Safari with the iPhone setting, it loads with a very nice mobile UI that works just like an iPhone app.  In fact, you can even click and drag to scroll, just like you would with your finger on an iPhone. Conclusion Even if you do not have a Smartphone, you can still preview what websites will look like on them with this trick. Not all sites will work of course, but it’s fun to play around with different sites that have mobile versions. • A dusty server room

    - by pauska
Here's the story.. The owners of the building we lease office space from decided to do a renovation of the exterior. This involved in some pretty heavy work at the level where our server room is, including exchanging windows wich are fit inside a concrete wall. My red alert went off when I heard that they were going to do the same thing with our server room (yes, our server room has a window. We're a small shop with 3 racks. The window is secured with steel bars.) I explicity told the contractor that they need to put up a temporarily wall between our racks and the original wall - and to make sure that the temporary wall is 100 % air and water-tight. They promised to do so. The temporary wall has a small door in it, so that workers can go in/out through the day (through our server room, wich was the only option....). On several occasions I could find the small door half-way shut while working evenings/nights. I locked the door, and thought that they would hopefully get the point soon and keep the door shut. I even gave a electrician a mouthful when I saw that he didn't close the door properly. By this point - I bet that most of you get a picture of what happened. Yes, they probably left the door open while drilling in the concrete. I present you our 4 weeks old EMC VNX: I'll even put in a little bonus, here is the APC UPS one rack further away from the temporary wall. See the nice little landing strip from my finger? What should I do? The only thing that comes to mind is to either call all our suppliers (EMC, HP, Dell, Cisco) and get them to send technicians to check out all the gear in the server room, or get some kind of certified 3rd-party consulant to check all of it. Would you run production systems on this gear? How long? Edit: I should also note that our aircondition isn't exactly enterprise-grade, given the nature of our small room. It's just a single inverter, wich have failed one time before I started working here (failed inverters usually leads to water dripping out).

  • IIS Manager won't let me create an application

    - by U62
Had a thing at work today on a Windows Server 2003 box. In IIS Manager I'm trying to create an application for a directory. So I've brought up the properties dialog and clicked the "Create" button and it did absolutely nothing - no error, the application name box stays greyed out and there's no gear icon on the folder. Also there was no event log message. Has anyone seen this happen or know of a solution?

  • I have a collection of dead consumer grade routers, should I buy a real one?

    - by Ex Networking Guy
Am I crazy for considering purchasing a Cisco 2621 for the house? I am familiar enough with IOS to set up a simple gateway router, I don't really need the experience. At this point, I'm a developer so my days of crawling through CO's and under desks are long past me. But I am really sick of crappy consumer grade networking gear. Maybe I have lousy luck and this stack of WRTG54s is just because I have lousy power, or whatever.
