  • Error with SQL Server Setup 2012 on Windows 2012

    I am trying to install SQL Server on Windows 2012. I was able to finally get the wizard up and running after making some changes on the server, but now it fails no matter what I do with the following error: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.     I need a solution to store images (1 billion) which users will upload to a website via PHP or Javascript upload (website will have 1 billion page views a month using Linux Debian distros) assuming 20 photos per user maximum (10 thumbnails of size 90px by 90px and 10 large, script resized images of having maximum width 500px or maximum height 500px depending on shape of image, meaning square, rectangle, horizontal, vertical etc). Assume this to be a LEMP-stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP) social-media or social-matchmaking type application whose content will be text and images. Since everyone knows storing tons of images (website users uploaded images in this case) are bad inside a single directory or NFS etc, please explain all the details about the architecture and configuration of the entire setup of storage solution, to store 1 billion images on any method you recommend (no third-party cloud storage like S3 etc. It has to be within the private data center using our own hardware and resources.). The solution has to include both the storage solution and organizing the images uploaded by users. How will we organize the users images if a single user will not have more than 20 images (10 thumbs and 10 large of having either width or height 500px)? Please consider that this has to be organized in a structural way so we can fetch a single user's images via PHP/Javascript or API programmatically through some type of user's unique identifier(s).

    I'm running some research on how people search the web for specific types of information. I'd like to be able to set them up with a laptop and browser and then record a history of what they search for and what sites they visit. A Firefox or Chrome plugin would be ideal, but a standalone program is fine too. It doesn't need to be free, just quick and reliable. It doesn't need to be a general PC monitoring program (though that would be OK too) - it's only Web usage I need to track. I've found a few on the Web but am not sure which ones to trust. Your recommendations would be much appreciated.

If you are creating an ASP.NET application in .NET Framework 4.0, then you can easily monitor your application's CPU or memory consumption and see how many exceptions your application raising. In this article I will show you how you can do this.       Description:           With .NET Framework 4.0, you can turn on the monitoring of CPU and memory consumption by setting AppDomain.MonitoringEnabled property to true. Also, in .NET Framework 4.0, you can register a callback method to AppDomain.FirstChanceException event to monitor the exceptions being thrown within your application's AppDomain. Turning on the monitoring and registering a callback method will add some additional overhead to your application, which will hurt your application performance. So it is better to turn on these features only if you have following properties in web.config file,   <add key="AppDomainMonitoringEnabled" value="true"/> <add key="FirstChanceExceptionMonitoringEnabled" value="true"/>             In case if you wonder what does FirstChanceException mean. It simply means the first notification of an exception raised by your application. Even CLR invokes this notification before the catch block that handles the exception.   • Monitoring almost anything with BizTalk 360

    When you work in an integration environment it is common that you will find yourself in a situation where you integrate with some unusual applications or have some unusual dependencies. That is the nature of integration. When you work with BizTalk one of the common problems is that BizTalk often is the place where problems with applications you integrate with are highlighted and these external applications may have poor monitoring solutions. Fortunately if you are a working with a customer who uses BizTalk 360 then it contains a feature called the "Web Endpoint Manager". Typically the web endpoint manager is used to monitor web services that you integrate with and will ping them at appropriate times to make sure they return the expected HTTP status code. When you have an usual situation where you want to monitor something which is key to the success to your solution but you find yourself having to consider a significant custom solution to monitor the external dependency then the Web Endpoint Manager could be your friend. The endpoint manager monitors a url and checks for a certain status code. This means that you can create your own aspx web page and then make BizTalk 360 monitor this web page. Behind the web page you could write any code you wished. An example of this is architecture is shown in the below diagram.     In the custom web page you would implement some custom code to do whatever it is that you want to monitor. In the below code snippet you can see how the Page_Load default method is doing some kind of check then depending on the result of the check it returns a certain HTTP code. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { var result = CheckSomething();   if (result == "Success") Response.StatusCode = 202; else if (result == "DatabaseError") Response.StatusCode = 510; else if (result == "SystemError") Response.StatusCode = 512; else Response.StatusCode = 513;   }   In BizTalk 360 you would go into the Monitor and Notify tab and then to BizTalk Environment which gives you access to the Web Endpoint Manager. You need an alarm setup which configures how the endpoint will be checked. I'm not going to go through the details of creating the alarm as this is already documented in the BizTalk 360 documentation. One point to note is that in the example I am using I setup a threshold alarm which means that the url is checked about every minute and if there is an error that persists for a period of time then the alarm will raise the alert notification. In my example I configured the alarm to fire if the error persisted for 3 minutes. The below picture shows accessing the endpoint manager.   In the web endpoint manager you would then configure your endpoint to monitor and the HTTP response code which indicates all is working fine. The below picture shows this. I now have my endpoint monitoring setup and BizTalk 360 should be checking my custom endpoint to see that it is available. If I wanted to manually sanity check that the endpoints I have registered are working fine then clicking the Refresh button will show if they are all good or not. If my custom ASP.net page which is checking my dependency gets a problem you will see in the endpoint manager that the status code does not match the expected return code and your endpoints will display in red and you can see the problem. The below picture shows this. If I use specific HTTP response codes for the errors the custom ASP.net page might encounter I can easily interpret these to know what the problem is. Using the alarms and notifications with BizTalk 360 it means when your endpoint goes into an error state you can easily configure email or SMS notifications from BizTalk 360 to tell you that your endpoint is having problems and you can use BizTalk 360 to help correlate what the problem is to allow you to investigate further. Below you can see the email which tells me my endpoint is not working.   When everything returns to normal you will see the status is now fixed and you will see a situation like below where you can see the WebEndpoints are now green and the return code matches what is expected.   Conclusion As you can see it is really easy to plug your own custom ASP.net page into the BizTalk 360 web endpoint monitoring feature. This extension then gives you the power to really extend the monitoring to almost anything you want as long as you can write some .net code to check that the dependency is available and working.   • Are there website monitoring services that can monitor HTTP file download times?

    The software company I work for would like to monitor how long it takes to download their installers (hosted in several locations and about 30-100mb each) from various countries around the world. I am aware of website monitoring services like Pingdom and Site24x7, and have contacted their customer services, but neither have the facility to monitor download times of such large files via HTTP. For various reasons, we are not able to rely on weblogs. Does anyone know of any third-party services that could help us? Many thanks.

We heard from quite a few different readers and by far the most popular option was to use Dropbox to ensure that you could get the music and documents you wanted whether you were on your desktop, laptop, netbook, iPhone, or Android device.   • Storing lots of large strings with frequent "appends" and few reads

    In my current project, I need to store a very long ASCII string to each instance of a given object. This string will receive an 2 appends per minute and will not be retrieved so frequently. The worst case scenario is a 5-10MB string. I'll have thousands of instances of my object and I'm worried that storing all those strings in the filesystem would not be optimal, but I can't think of a better solution. Can anyone suggest an alternative? Maybe a key-value store? In this case, which one? Any other thoughts?

    Is there any software out there that can help me track, in real time, files being changed and/or created on my Windows (Windows 7) system? I'm trying to figure out all files being changed when setting up Windows Live Mail as I want to sync all relevant files between two computers. And no, the storage folder is not enough.   • Solaris disk I/O spike... which monitoring tools do I need?

    Hi all, My Solaris 10 websever / database server disk io keeps spiking at intermittent times. Using iostat -xtc 5 the reads / sec will jump from 3.0 to 1450.0 and %busy will jump to 98% The apache access log doesn't indicate anything out of the ordinary. In other words, requests aren't any higher than usual. top doesn't generate anything useful. The cpu usage is fine with mysql using about 20% and nothing else to speak of really. What monitoring tool should I be using to see what process is using excessive disk I/O? or if there are any other suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks

    Hello, I've installed Forefront and wanted to use it as monitoring traffic solution until we decide to put it as a router. I've 2 nic's assigned to this virtual machine. One NIC has connected port which is "mirror port" of our WAN redirected on switch so it sees all the network traffic flying by. The other NIC is internet access. This server is located inside our lan network. What topology should i choose and which options I should look at to be able to see which traffic is used (SMTP, WWW etc) and who does what? We had cases of infected machines with spam and we want to be able to see that some machine is sending large amounts of mails. Is that possible ?

  • failure daemon and changing pid number

    proftpd, sshd and apache processes run with /etc/init.d/its-script on linux distro. I was monitoring 21, 22 and 80 ports with farm monitoring service: every 5 minutes service check each port and notify only failure. The failures were 5-6 times on 24h. It seems that someone kicks the switch sometimes.. I add monit and collectd monitoring and the monitoring about 21, 22 and 80 ports is every 1 minute. I do not receive farm monitoring service notify. I receive only monit notify about failure and/or succeed/changing pid number of proftpd, sshd or apache process. The failures are still 5-6 times on 24h. collectd monitoing about cpu, load average and each process is regular and there are no peaks. There is nothing kicks the switch but there is something which determines failure monitoring. is it a simple interference or is it indicative of some abnormality? What could cause these failures?

    Hi, we have an SBS2003 server. Recently I decided to switch to hmailserver as i feel it's better than exchange 2003, so i disabled it. Of course i don't receive the Monitoring and Reporting emails from my server anymore, there is a way to change the setting? I think it directly interacts with Exchange, but maybe there is an smtp option out there Otherwise there is an alternative? I tried the paessler monitor on a vm, but i feel it's too much for my use: i just need to get a daily report of the security violations in the event log and something else

The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

    I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin.

I'm also looking for process information, similar to the info that you get from TOP. Like I'd just like to be able to pop open this webpage to view whats going on with the server at a moments notice. For example, perhaps just a basic PHP page that is on the server that uses basic AJAX to display and refresh results from the TOP command in the page.     Do you know a simple script that can do email round trip monitoring ? I want to monitor email service on A. I install the script on B. B sends an email to A A sends an auto-reply to B B knows that email service is working well. B restarts this test every 30min. If B didn't received replies, it sends an alert message. B could also monitor round-trip delay of emails. I have not access to the email service, I can only ask new end user email and configure auto-reply. B is an Ubuntu. Thanks!

  • Delete temp file during finally vs delete output file during catch

    This is in Java 6. I've seen more than once that people create temp files, do something, then rename it to the output file. Everything is wrapped in a try-finally block, where the temp file is deleted in finally in case something goes wrong in between. try { //do something with tempFile //do something with tempFile //do something with tempFile tempFile.renameTo(outputFile); } finally { if (tempFile.exists()) tempFile.delete() } I was wondering what are the benefits of doing that instead of doing something to the output file directly and delete it in case of exceptions. try { //do something with outputFile //do something with outputFile //do something with outputFile } catch (Exception e) { if (outputFile.exists()) outputFile.delete(); } My guess is that deleting temp files in finally benefits me when the try block can throw many kinds of exceptions. Is my guess right? What else?
