• Geek Bike Ride at JavaOne 2012 - Pictures

  Following the tradition of JavaOne Latin America 2011, a gorgeous day in San Francisco marked the beginning of JavaOne 2012 with another Geek Bike Ride. About 50 Java developers got together this morning at Fisherman's Wharf and rode a bike along Marina, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, Golden Gate Bridge, and ultimately finishing in Sausalito downtown. This is a beautiful biking trail, mostly flat with a couple of good hills. Some folks even continued to Tiburon for an extra challenge. Check out map by Blazing Saddles for the exact course. They provide excellent bike rentals and a good service too! • Bloggers Unite at Annual OpenWorld Blogger Meetup

• Go Big or Go Home

  The Oracle Develop conference (#oracledevelop10), being co-located for the first time ever with JavaOne in San Francisco, is guaranteed to be the ultimate rush for developers this year. Where else can you go to learn about, interact with, and meet fellow devotees of the entire Oracle Development stack (welcome, Oracle Solaris)? This will also be the first time that the community space traditionally located at Oracle OpenWorld - and hosted by Oracle Technology Network, as always - will be present at the "developer" conference during this busy week. So, Oracle OpenWorld's loss is Oracle Develop's gain. And what a community space it will be: nearly 4,000 square feet for meeting space, contests and give-aways, consumption of various beverages, special speakers (Oracle ACEs among them, no doubt), and video-casting. The entire Oracle Technology Network crew will be on hand to "facilitate" your experience, of course. Even better, you can rub shoulders and share war stories with attendees from that "other" conference, JavaOne. (You have access to both conferences as a single package, so you may be having a conversation with yourself.) We call the whole enchilada "The Zone". • Whew.... what a week!

  Last week was a busy week for the UPK and Tutor teams at Oracle. It started with the the Collaborate Conference in Las Vegas and ended with our first UPK and Tutor Customer Advisory Board (CAB) meeting at Oracle HQ. The Collaborate Conference is a yearly event sponsored by three of the largest Oracle User Groups. • Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) • Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) • Quest - International User Group The User Groups are completely user run organizations with Oracle participation. If you've never attended a conference, time to start planning for the 2011 event in Orlando! If that's out of your reach, there are many regional and industry user groups that meet on a regular basis. They offer a great way to get involved, network with other users, and increase your knowledge around the Oracle applications. For a list of groups near you, check out the Oracle User Group Center. I'll add that the biggest meeting of Oracle users is at the Oracle Open World Conference in San Francisco in September, where we will have many UPK & Tutor focused development and customer sessions. More information on Oracle Open World will be forthcoming over the next few months. We hope to see many of you there! The CAB was a first for the UPK and Tutor team. Although we speak with customers regularly, this gave us an opportunity to meet in a more formal setting to discuss industry trends, business issues, and the direction of the products. Members serve a 2 year term and are required to attend 2 meetings per year, one in person, one via phone. We have some tweaking to do to our meeting format (most members wanted it to be longer!), but the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great success. There were many experiences and ideas shared and the wheels of the UPK and Tutor Development teams have been turning ever since. I'm sure you will see some of these discussions result in new product features over time. What a great week!

• Interactive Reporting with BI Publisher 11G

  One of the new features that came out with BI Publisher 11G and made me really excited about is the Interactive Viewer, which allows you to interact with the data presented in the reports and gain more insights about the data. You can have as many Table, Chart, Pivot Table, Gauge components in a single report and all of them are linked together so that you can click on any data point on the components such as Chart, Pivot Table, Gauge, and that would refresh other components in the report to reflect the selection without refreshing the whole report or page. No longer you need to navigate to another report or open other reports to see related data or drill down to the detail data. It’s all there within a single report. Well, sounds cliché but really this is a typical case of ‘seeing is believing’, so instead of reading I would love you guys to take a look so I’ve recorded the following video. The lists shown at the top or the left are one of the new features that we’ll be introducing in coming future very soon, but everything else is there with 11.1.1.3. So why not start today ? • BUILD 2013&ndash;Day 2 Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013ndashday-2-summary.aspx Day 1 rocked.  So how could they top that?  By having more goodies to give away!  During the keynote they announced that attendees would get one year of Office 365, 100 GB of SkyDrive and one year of Adobe Cloud Service.  Overall they key note was long with more information shot at you than you could possibly absorb.  They went about 20 minutes over time which made me think that they could have split it to a 3rd keynote and given us a better idea on some of these topics and perhaps addressed the one open question that was floating around Twitter.  That is, what is going to happen with XBox development.  It sounded like there was a quick side mention of that, but I missed it. The rest of the day was packed with great sessions full of Windows 8, Azure and Windows Phone goodness.  I had planned on attending Scott Hanselman’s talk, but they had so many people this they had to push to an overflow room.  Stay tuned from session summaries later. The day was topped off by an attendee party across from the San Francisco Giant’s ball park.  It was kind of quirky and and fun.  They set it up on one of the piers in the bay and had food served by food trucks.  You would be surprised how good the food was.  Add in some pool tables, fooseball, video games, a DJ, a comedian/musician and plenty of spirits and it was a great way to end day 2. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013

• Oracle Congratulates Winners of the 2012 Oracle Excellence Award: Eco-Enterprise Innovation

  Oracle recently held its fifth annual Eco-Enterprise Innovation awards ceremony during Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco. Oracle Chairman of the Board, Jeff Henley, awarded select customers for their use of Oracle products to help with their sustainability initiatives. During this session, several award recipients discussed how they embedded various sustainability strategies throughout their organizations to help reduce their costs as well as their environmental footprint. It was an interesting session based around green best business practices and how Oracle products enabled many of these customers’ sustainability efforts. The winning customers for 2012 are: Dena Bank, Earth Rangers Centre, Grupo Pão de Açúcar, Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, Korean Air, North County Transit District, Orlando Utilities Commission, Ricoh – Europe, Schneider Electric, Severn Trent Water, and Terracap. Several of these winning customers also selected a partner to co-accept the award with them. These winning partners played a major role in helping these customers achieve their sustainability-related efforts.. Oracle also awarded Ian Winham, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from Ricoh Europe, with Oracle's Chief Sustainability Officer of the Year award. My Session is a hands-on lab (HOL) on MySQL Cluster.If you are interested in familiarize a bit with MySQL Cluster this is definitely a session for you. I will start by briefly introducing MySQL Cluster and its architecture. Then I will guide you through the needed steps to install a local MySQL Cluster, connect to it (using the command line), monitor its logs, and safe shutdown it.We will hence have a chance to see which are the most common commands using in MySQL Cluster administration (e.g. Cluster backup) as well as the most common operations (e.g. online datanode add). Cluster's users and customers have the flexibility to choose whether they prefer to use a SQL or NoSQL approach to connect to MySQL Cluster, so, during the last part of the HOL, we will see how to connect to MySQL Cluster using the NoSQL NDB API. • WebCenter Customer Advisory Board meetings kick off Oracle Open World 2012!

  Welcome to OpenWorld! OpenWorld 2012 got underway today with a series of meetings with the members of the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Led by the WebCenter Product Management team, these meetings are a great way for the product team and customers to directly interact and discuss real-life business challenges, product details and to discuss upcoming features and functionality. This year, board members participated in discussions around live demos around product enhancements that will be featured throughout the coming week. Highlights included a variety of new mobile and social solutions, a great new user interface for WebCenter Content plus new Portal and Sites functionality that makes the experience for the everyday user a lot more pleasant. The day kicked off with Roel Stalman, VP of Product Management, giving a detailed overview of what’s new in WebCenter. Given all the improvements to discuss, this session went over 2 hours! Roel showcased the brand new UI for Content, Portal and Sites. He also gave live demos of the new mobile apps for WebCenter Content, Portal and the Oracle Social Network.  The attendees then broke into sub-groups in order to deep-dive with Product Management for the Portal, Sites, and Content product areas on specific functionality and application integrations. If you are here in San Francisco this week for OpenWorld, I definitely recommend stopping by the WebCenter area in the Moscone West Exhibition Hall to see some of this new functionality for yourself. • Advice for Storing and Displaying Dates and Times Across Different Time Zones

  A common question I receive from clients, colleagues, and 4Guys readers is for recommendations on how best to store and display dates and times in a data-driven web application. One of the challenges in storing and displaying dates in a web application is that it is quite likely that the visitors arriving at your site are not in the same time zone as your web server; moreover, it's very likely that your site attracts visitors from many different time zones from around the world. Consider an online messageboard site, like ASPMessageboard.com, where each of 1,000,000+ posts includes the date and time it was made. Imagine a user from New York leaves a post on April 7th at 4:30 PM and that the web server hosting the site is located in Dallas, Texas, which is one hour earlier than New York. When storing that post to the database do you record the post's date and time relative to the visitor (4:30 PM), the relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or some other value? And when displaying this post how do you show that date and time to a reader in San Francisco, which is three hours earlier than New York? Do you show the time relative to the person who made the post (4:30 PM), relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or relative to the user (1:30 PM)? And if you decide to store or display the date based on the poster's or visitor's time zone then how do you know their time zone and its offset? How do you account for daylight savings, and so on? • Speaking at MySQL Connect 2012

  At the end of September, the MySQL Connect 2012 conference will be held as part of Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco. MySQL Connect is a two day event that allows attendees to focus on MySQL at a technical depth with presentations and interaction with many of the MySQL developers, engineers and other knowledgeable staff. There is also a range a international speakers to give broader knowledge to the presentations. I am presenting a Hands-On Lab on Sunday 30th September 16:15 - 17:15 entitled HOL10474 - MySQL Security: Authentication and Auditing. The sessions goes through an introduction to the plugin API and how it can help expand the capabilities of MySQL. Since it is a hands-on lab, attendees will use practical examples of implementing simple plugins to get a start in developing their own plugins. These plugin examples are based around implementing PAM authentication and how it can be utilized to offer greater security for the MySQL Server. Once the authentication has been tested, a method to monitor it will be implemented using the auditing API and logging different events as they happen in the service. There is a total of 78 sessions at MySQL Connect 2012 with a great range of speakers. Hope to see you there!

• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth!
