• Lubuntu upgrade to 13.04 killed sound with ALSA. How to troubleshoot?

  After upgrading to 13.04 from 12.10 Lubuntu lost audio playback after unplugging usb soundcard (Polycom) and plugging it back in. Volume control was gray and leading to pulseaudio mixer (not installed) so I uninstalled the pulseaudio package. I also removed and reinstalled the alsa-base package. UPDATE: I removed the usb soundcard and got rid of all alsa config. Everything is working as before the install but it sure feels fragile.

  If I read the docs on Windows Service Pack support policies, and the specific Internet Explorer lifecycle support page as well as the Wikipedia page I've deduced that: IE6 support ends/ended at: Windows 2000 Ended (date unknown) Windows XP SP0 (RTM) Ended Home: 30-Aug-2003 Pro: 30-Sep-2004 SP1 Ended Home: 11-Jul-2004 Pro: 11-Jul-2004 SP2 Home: 13-Jul-2010 Pro: 13-Jul-2010 SP3 (released: April 21, 2008) Home: ??? Pro: ??? What isn't clear is the Windows XP SP3 scenario. In "human" terms, when is the end of support for IE6 on Windows XP SP3? e.g. if there is never a Windows XP SP4... or heaven forbid, an SP4 is released. I realize this doesn't force people to upgrade etc. however I'm trying to get a "semi" official word on when IE6 moves into the "not supported" category. I'm not interested in philosophical answers e.g. "big enterprise won't upgrade but they will expect support into 2017" stuff... I just want the "clear answer" in terms of official Microsoft support.

• Proper High-End Video Editing Software for Windows?

  I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with Prosumer/High-End Video Editing? So far I use Adobe Premiere CS4, but it is an unstable and buggy mess sadly. This could be partially caused by the fact that my input material isn't always pure HDV/AVCHD but sometimes it can be DivX or some already pre-processed video. The one thing I liked about Adobe is though that with After Effects and Encore, they have a good overall toolset, but if it's sub-par then it's no good. Luckily it is already paid for and was worth it's money overall, so It's not a complete waste of money. But are there alternatives? Especially After Effects is quite unique, and the closest thing I found is Apple's Final Cut Studio which includes Motion and DVD Studio. The two downsides is that it requires a Mac and that it doesn't support BluRay though. Any hints for Windows? Sony Vegas might be something I'll look at, but I'm guessing I have to keep using After Effects for some serious compositing/VFX?

• Cisco Access switch is dropping large amount of end points

  This afternoon, with no changes to the network, a switch suddenly started dropping off lots of connections. These connections would come back up a few minutes later, then another area connected to the switch would drop off. This is an older 4006 chassis switch which could in and of itself be a problem but I'm looking to see what else you all would look for in trying to find a root cause. Switch is connected via ports 1/1 and 1/2 in an etherchannel to a VSS core 1/1/42 and 2/1/42. Both sides are up and working however the CPU on the switch will spike up to 99% and that's when CRC errors start to hit the VSS core on one of those interfaces and end points start dropping off. We tried new transceivers and SFP's on each side of the link, same result. When we tried swapping the fiber patch cables on the access switch the CRC errors did not follow the fiber cables they stayed with port 1/2 on the access switch. So port 1/2 on the supervisor module looks like the culprit. We actually tried to create a new member of the ethernet channel by taking a fiber media converter to cat5 and make that a member of the port-channel but when we plugged it in you couldn't even reach the switch. I'm guessing that's unrelated and a problem with the media converter. As of right now we have left it in a state of only one fiber cable running to one side of the VSS core (1/1 Access Switch -- 2/1/42). I've sent some info into TAC and they are looking into the situation but does anyone else have any commands I could run or some troubleshooting I could look into in the meantime?

• Proper end of day sequence to maintain monitor config

  I've got an HP EliteBook 6930p that travels from home, where it is connected to individual cables, and work where there is a docking station. At both locations I have an external monitor as the secondary monitor and like to have the laptop screen as the primary, i.e. with the task bar. At the end of the day I close the laptop, which is supposed to set it to standby. When I get home I plug in the power cord and the external monitor cord and open the computer. When heading into work I close the computer and unplug everything. Inevitably when I open the computer at the new location the monitors are reversed, i.e. the primary, task bar display is on the external monitor and the laptop shows the secondary, even though when i click identify the laptop has the 1. I then have to disable the secondary display, switch the primary to the laptop and re-enable the secondary. I've tried locking the computer before closing and occasionally that works to keep the setup in place but not always. Any suggestions for how to keep the config in place during transport? ed

• Configure linux machine as bridge/switch and end device

  At my home, I have two desktop PCs in two rooms. The router / DSL modem is in one of these rooms. Now I want to configure a home server (having 2 LAN ports, running 24/7) in the corridor between the two rooms, using only one LAN cable at each door. This gives me the following physical configuration: (door) (door) .----/-/----. .-----/-/----------._ FritzBox | | | .----´´ DSL Router PC1 Server | PC2 As just said, the server has 2 network interfaces and is running Ubuntu. What I need now is a network configuration which enables both the server and PC1 to connect to the router. I think the server needs to serve as a bridge or switch. Currently, all computers are configured having static IP addresses. If I'm understanding it correctly, a bridge / switch doesn't have its own IP address, but as the server needs to be configured as an own end device, it needs to have one. My first question is, do I have to configure both interfaces separately, giving both the same static IP address? My next question is, how do I bridge the two physical networks into one? I have basic understanding (but am always confused again and again) of bridges and switches, but I don't know how to configure it in software. I only know that it's possible to do so :) The third question is: Is it possible to configure this in a way that network packets from/to PC1 to/from the router only go through hardware or only consume low CPU in the server? • Error at the end of APC install

  I need to get APC running for a Drupal install of mine. I found a fairly concise guide at http://blog.4rev.net/2009-09/installing-apc-accelerator-into-php5-fedora-core-11/ for installing on FC11, only, I am using FC12. I figured I would give it a shot. I was able to run the following commands successfully - and yum installed fc12 versions of everything in the FC11 guide. yum install php-pear yum install php-devel httpd-devel yum groupinstall ‘Development Tools’ yum groupinstall ‘Development Libraries’ Then, I tried pecl install apc. Everything looked good until to got to the end, where it outputted the following error. /var/tmp/APC/php_apc.c: In function ‘zif_apc_compile_file’: /var/tmp/APC/php_apc.c:881: warning: unused variable ‘eg_class_table’ /var/tmp/APC/php_apc.c:881: warning: unused variable ‘eg_function_table’ /var/tmp/APC/php_apc.c: At top level: /var/tmp/APC/php_apc.c:959: error: duplicate ‘static’ make: *** [php_apc.lo] Error 1 ERROR: `make' failed Some people have had success with installing apc-beta, but that didn't work for me.. From upstream function I will get values of variables word_count, *line and remain. concatenate them with a space at the end. add space distributively, with left to right priority, so when a fair division cannot be done, the second to last word's end will have (no. of spaces) spaces, the previous ones will get (spaces + 1) spaces. concatenate everything together to make it a new *line. • Email sent from Centos end up in user spam folder

  I am facing this issue, I use the default postfix MTA in centos but the mail end up in user spam folder, but this does not seem to be a problem in Debian using exim4, both host have hostname and domain name configured, and relay mail through external smtp host. Both configuration and recieving email header are attached. The different seems that Debian has this additional (envelope tag) and (from) tag other than some minor syntax differences. Any help to resolve is appreciated. The IP address and DNS is masked as follow: 1.2.3.4 = My IP address smtp.host.com = external smtp host for my company [email protected] = account at smtp host centos.abc.com = Local centos server debian.abc.com = Local debian server Thanks.   I have a very big list of file names that end with a the following: .c .h .cpp and much more. I need to extract file names that end with .c and .h How do I do that? Also, how could I add quotation marks to the beginning and end of the word, followed with a comma? For example, if I have this in the list: mi_var.c How could I extract it from a very big list, and everything else that ends in .c and replace it to have quotation marks and a comma at the end? • Removing blank page at end of SSRS Report

  I have a report that produces a blank page at the end of the report. How do I get rid of it? The report consists of text/list boxes that are embedded inside a rectangle. The rectangle has the property selected: "Add page break after". If this option is selected the report renders exactly how it should, minus the extra blank page at the end. However, if the "Add page break after" option is not selected, the blank page does not appear, although the report does not display the content correctly. It seems that this option is producing the extra page at the end of the report. The issue is not with the margins. How can the last blank page be eliminated while still maintaining the page breaks throughout the rest of the report?

• Going from small to medium sized websites.

  I've been coding websites for a couple of years now, mostly in php and xhtml. I come from the design world, but I'm proud of doing standart compliant websites and great interfaces. Also used Wordpress and loved it. Most of the time there were really simple commercial websites, with no database included, where everything is done from scratch. Every page is parsed through an index?page=xxx and But I have a few prospects that are larger websites (let's call them 'medium sized websites') where I feel I'm lacking the following: How to dispach or render the pages (MVC controller instead of index?page=???) Proper page hierarchy and easy breadcrumbs implementation Auto generation of navigation menu, or an easy way to maintain them? Clean URLs Form validation Easy database support I really don't know if I should be looking into php scripts, and refine my skills or get into a CMS (like drupal) or a PHP framework. I found Wordpress very assuring and didn't feel trapped into crazy conventions, but I feel is not the right tool for this. I hate the CMS Page with the big textbox as I am used to code every page by hand my pages are not a title and a textbox. Got the feeling? My php skills are sort of medium/low still, but I would like to hear some thoughts of what I should learn to take the next step!

• Why is comparing against "end()" iterator legal?

  According to C++ standard (3.7.3.2/4) using (not only dereferencing, but also copying, casting, whatever else) an invalid pointer is undefined behavior (in case of doubt also see this question). Now the typical code to traverse an STL containter looks like this: std::vector<int> toTraverse; //populate the vector for( std::vector<int>::iterator it = toTraverse.begin(); it != toTraverse.end(); ++it ) { //process( *it ); } std::vector::end() is an iterator onto the hypothetic element beyond the last element of the containter. There's no element there, therefore using a pointer through that iterator is undefined behavior. Now how does the != end() work then? I mean in order to do the comparison an iterator needs to be constructed wrapping an invalid address and then that invalid address will have to be used in a comparison which again is undefined behavior. Is such comparison legal and why?

• Why use a do-end block in Lua?

  I keep trying to find answers for this but fail to do so. I wanted to know, what is the do-end block actually used for? It just says values are used when needed in my book so how could I use this? Do I use it to reduce the scope of local variables by placing a function in a do-end loop and place local variables outside of the function but inside this do-end block and the variables will be seen by the function? But then can the function still be called? Sorry for being very vague. I hope that makes sense. Maybe an illustrated example might be useful ^^

• PHP strip_tags only at the end of the string

  Ok, well, I just want to use strip_tags function on the very end of a string to get rid of any <br /> tags. Here's what I have now, but this is no good because it strips these tags from everywhere in the string, which is not what I want. I only need them stripped out if it's at the end of the string... $string = strip_tags($string, strtr($string, array('<br />' => '&#10;'))); How can I do this same thing, except only at the very end of a string?? • Vim: replacing start and end of a visual char, line or block

  I am trying to find a shortcut to place a custom comment sequence on my code, e.g.: /* start of comment blah end of comment /**/ (it is easier to void the comment by just adding a / to the beginning) I would like to do this in Vim by selecting a visual line, block or char and adding '/' characters at the beginning of the block and '/*/' at the end, plus newlines. After selecting some lines (Shift-V) I tried this: '<,'>s/\(.*\)/\/*\r\1\r\/**\// But it adds the comment chars at EACH newline. How can I only apply the substitution at the beginning and end of the selected range? Thanks gm

  Can anyone recommend a good book on Javascript module/application development. I'm a Software Engineer, so I don't need all the intro to programming stuff. What I'm really looking for is: How do you bundle the html/css/javascript together so that you can make one include that will load the whole application. I.e.: <div id="myapplication"></div> ... ... <script src="myapplication.js"> Design patterns are always welcome. I've already read Javascript the good parts, and online guides, but it's hard to find a comprehensive guide/tutorial for specifically this. There's a lot of good "this is a javascript application" and "this is a scalable framework", but I haven't had any luck with "This is how you build a javascript application, including the html and css, and this is how you deliver it nicely". I'm building a small application to start, so I'm not interested in scalability and large-scale development practices, just a nice and comprehensive guide to get me off the ground.

• Shell script syntax error: unexpected end of line

  I wrote a simple shell script to check for the existence of a xml file and if it exists, then rename an old xml file to be backup and then move the new xml file to where the old xml file was stored. #!/bin/sh oldFile="/Documents/sampleFolder/sampleFile.xml" newFile="/Documents/sampleFile.xml" backupFileName="/Documents/sampleFolder/sampleFile2.backup" oldFileLocation="/Documents/sampleFolder" if [ -f "$newFile" ] ; then echo "File found" #Rename old file mv $oldFile $backupFileName #move new file to old file's location mv $newFile $oldFileLocation else echo "File not found, do nothing" fi However, every time I try to run the script, I get 4 command not found messages and a syntax error: unexpected end of file. Any suggestions on why I get these command not found errors or the unexpected end of file? • The best approach to customize Bootstrap Less files and keep it easy to be updated to future versions

  I'm wondering what the best way would be to customize the less files in Bootstrap and, at the mean time, keep it easy to be updated to future Bootstrap versions. It's straightforward to just modify the less files, but the problem is that when the next version of Bootstrap comes out, it might be painful to upgrade (because all the changes are already deeply mixed with the original sources.) Another approach would be similar to the open closed principle, that is, keeping the original less files unchanged, and adding my customized less files to overwrite the CSS rules I need. When Bootstrap gets updated, (hopefully) I can simply replace the less files and everything would work magically. However, regardless of the correctness of my assumption, the same CSS rules would be scattered in even more places and hard to manage. Also, the more we overwrite the CSS (not for compatibility or other purposes), the more bandwidth we waste. I know this highly depends on how the author of Bootstrap would handle the structure of the framework or even the naming of CSS rules, but I'd still like to hear everybody's opinions. Thanks.

  Hi to all, I need to read a file, which has an "n" number of lines, I need to know when reading the end of each line, so I can store the line in an array, ok so far I have while(stream.position < stream.bytesAvailable) { char = stream.readUTFBytes(1); if(char == "\n") { array.push(line); line = ""; } else { line += char; } } my question is, always the end of line will be "\n"?? how can I be sure if is not an other character like \r??, there is an other character for end of line??, thanks for any help!!!

• Full background using :cover; makes adds horizontal scroll

  I am working on a website which needs a header with full background image & 650 height. At the moment i am using background-size: cover; property with 100% width. While, it's working it leaves an awkward horizontal scroll of about 50px on right side. Which is lot more prominent in smaller resolutions.
