It's raining development VirtualBox images again!

The cloud has burst.. forecast is looking like large amounts of VirtualBox images are coming down from OTN. Are you finding the install for Database, WebLogic, SOA or WebCenter to be complicated when your goal is simply to setup a development sandbox? Sick of giving your credit card info to cloud vendors, only to be stuck in a walled garden where you can't connect to your own internal systems? Are you new to Java and just wanted something technical to sink your teeth into? Or maybe you just want to put some stuff on that new terabyte drive you got? ;) Have no fear. VirtualBox 4.0 is here. We've have several development (read: don't use in production) images that were designed for use for in-person events, but we're posting them for your enjoyment. Some of the images have step by step hands on labs baked into them too! Please suggest how should I approach these requirements. What ready-to-use solutions (modules) are best suited to achieve something like this: What I need is an image library that has searchable, tagged images that are already resized when we publish them. If the author searches the library and the image he needs isn’t there, he can upload one and have it added to the index. The important thing is that images in the library can be sorted into three categories: News images, top story images and feature images so that, over time, we don’t end up with hundreds of images crammed into one folder, thus making browsing a pain (and to prevent someone from something like: Searching for a keyword so they can find an image for the news, picking an image, and then seeing it’s 1600X. 1200). Also, I need something which will assemble thumbnail galleries easily. I don’t want to have to go to the image library, get a URL, go back, paste it in, etc. I should be able to pick, say, 8 images and say “create gallery”. How this objective is achieved is flexible, but I am looking for a shortcut to get around assembling screenshot galleries by hand.

float right image pushes down text in table below in IE9 [migrated]

I'm not a webmaster, not even a web developer, but I'm tasked with adding content to a Wordpress site developed by Someone Else(TM). Here's a page illustrating the problem: http://www.reginedagan.no/program/fiskekonkurranse-i-hovden/. It shows up nice in Firefox: But in IE9 the floated picture pushed down the text in the table below, so that it looks rather awful: I found some related questions on the web, e.g. "CSS: Float right in IE doesn't work!" and "why does a floating DIV mess up table positioning?", and the suggestions there led me to set clear: none on the div around the table, the table itself, and then each individual tr and finally even on each individual td. I also set width="99%" on the table, and tried (but I don't know how correctly) to apply the IE6 quirk fix margin-right: -3px. However, I'm unable to reproduce the effect with default styling or with clear: none (as above). So it seems maybe it's something Wordpress does, or maybe it's something the theme thing or whatever it is does – but it's very similar to what others have observed, so there is strong indication that it's also a quirk in IE. Help?

Super-Charge GIMP’s Image Editing Capabilities with G’MIC [Cross-Platform]

Recently we showed you how to enhance GIMP’s image editing power and today we help you super-charge GIMP even more. G’MIC (GREYC’s Magic Image Converter) will add an impressive array of filters and effects to your GIMP installation for image editing goodness. Note: We applied the Contrast Swiss Mask filter to the image shown in the screenshot above to create a nice, warm sunset effect. To add the new PPA open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and do a search for “G’MIC”. You will find two listings available and can select either one to add G’MIC to your system (both work equally well). Click on More Info for the listing that you choose and scroll down to where Add-ons are listed. Make sure to select the Add-on listed, click Apply Changes when it appears, and then click Install. We have both shown here for your convenience… When you get ready to use G’MIC to enhance an image, go to the Filters Menu and select G’MIC. A new window will appear where you can select from an impressive array of filters available for your use. Have fun! problem with css or browser

How can I make QSSTV recognise my sound device

After reading this article from Instructables I wanted to try it out in Ubuntu. Luckily QSSTV is available but I'm having problems getting it to work properly. When pressing the green light (to receive data) I get this error: After going to Options Configure Interfaces I discovered that it's attempting to use /dev/dsp which doesn't appear to exist. In my /dev folder there are no files that reference sound devices and I've tried all of the devices in /dev/snd but unfortunately none of them work. Is there a specific audio device that I should be linking to?

How to make a disk image and restore from it later?

I'm a new Linux user. I've reinstalled my Wubi from scratch at least ten times the last few weeks because while getting the system up and running (drivers, resolution, etc.) I've broken something (X, grub, unknowns) and I can't get it back to work. Especially for a newbie like me, it's easier (and much faster) to just reinstall the whole shebang than try to troubleshoot several layers of failed "fixing" attempts. Coming from Windows, I expect that there is some "disk image" utility that I can run to make a snapshot of my Linux install (and of the boot partition!!) before I meddle with stuff. Then, after I've foobar'ed my machine, I would somehow restore my machine back to that working snapshot. What's the Linux equivalent of Windows disk imagers like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost? Note: I found a similar question here.

Image CDN with API?

My company uses flickr and picasa web albums as poor man's content delivery networks (CDN) for image hosting, but I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on any other services that might be worth looking into, paid and free? Preferably something that has an API so that it can be integrated discreetly on the backend as a WordPress plugin or for other development frameworks. A CDN such as Amazon is cheap, and it works, but the lack of a photo-centric API is what prevents me from using it for general usage.

Opening cursor files in a graphics editor?

Is there an editor where these files can be opened - or at least a converter to something like .png? I can note that ImageMagick display also failed to open these files... Found also Gursor Maker - Cursor Editor for X11/GTK+; got the CVS code from SourceForge - it still uses Numeric (the old name of numpy), so to run it, you'll have to do: #from Numeric import * from numpy import * ... in xcurio.py, curxp.py, gimp.py, colorfunc.py - and comment the #from xml.dom.ext.reader import Sax2 in lsproj.py. With that, I got it running 11.04: ... but cannot get any files to open? So I thought I should grep for paths, nothing much came up - and when I looked into cursordefs.py, I simply had to paste this: CURSOR_ICON = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_xpm_data([ "10 16 3 1", " c None", ". c #000000", "+ c #FFFFFF", ".. ", ".+. ", ".++. ", ".+++. ", ".++++. ", ".+++++. ", ".++++++. ", ".+++++++. ", ".++++++++.", ".+++++....", ".++.++. ", ".+. .++. ", ".. .++. ", " .++. ", " .++. ", " .. "]) Heh :) In any case, doesn't look like it will be much usable on newer Ubuntus, unfortunately... Just tested XMC plugin as well - on 11.04, has to be built from source (from the link in the accepted answer); the requirements on my system resolved to: sudo apt-get install libgimp2.0-dev libglib2.0-0-dbg libglib2.0-0-refdbg libglib2.0-cil-dev libgtk2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-cil-dev ... after that, the configure/make procedure in the INSTALL file works. Note that this plugin is a bit "sneaky": ... that is, you should use "All files" (as there are no extensions); cursor previews at first will not be rendered. Then open one cursor file; after it has been opened, then there is a preview in the File/Open dialog; but other than that, it works fine...

My site is getting popular, bandwidth expensive

I'm running a (small) image hosting site which has been getting a little bit of traction lately (2,000 to 5,000 visitors a day, spikes up to 10,000). It's hosted on Linode and I've already run out of the bandwidth for this month (300 GB). I've experimented with Amazon S3 but that was costing me $5 a day, Linode currently costs me $30 a month. I get a tiny bit of revenue from ads (Adsense and Black Label Ads) but it's not enough to break even. What should I do? Obviously I'd like to keep running the site but not if it starts costing me a lot of money.

Copyright of pictures upload to a website?

I want to run a website like stock photos. How can I be sure that the uploader is real copyright holder of the picture? Is it possible to leave the responsibility of this copyright claim to the uploader or at last the webmaster is responsible for the website content? It generally confuses me, as for example, stock photo websites needs form signed by the model for photos showing human face. How they can be sure that the signature actually belongs to the model? How they keep them safe from possible lawsuit in this case (e.g. if selling photos of a models with a fake signature?)

Are icon fonts bad for SEO?

Instead of using <img> tags for your icons, you can use icon fonts on <span> tags (which offer some advantages such as not having to create a sprite, being able to scale icons up/down without degrading quality...). However, by using an icon font you give up the <img> alt attribute (that attribute can help you with SEO). There is a way to add text to the <span> and hide it, but I wonder whether this is recognized / penalized by Google (as it seems to go against the quality guidelines). Are icon fonts bad for SEO (i.e. by using icon fonts you give up the alt attribute) ? Would inserting text in font icon tag and hiding it with CSS (text-indent: -9999px) be recognized / penalized by Google ?

I have a nature photography site with multiple types of photo galleries. Each photo and associated caption on my site appears in several galleries. For instance, a photo of a goldfinch that was taken on a trip to New Mexico in 2008 will appear in the "goldfinch.php" gallery, in the "finches.php" gallery, and in the "New_Mexico_2008.php" gallery. This duplication is useful for my site visitors - User A may want to see goldfinch photos, whereas User B wants to see photos from New Mexico - but I am concerned about the SEO implications. The typical suggestions to deal with duplicate content, such as 301 redirects and canonical tags, probably won't work in this case, because the page content is substantially different (ranging from ~1% to ~90% duplication, depending on the specific example chosen). The obvious solution to me would be to edit robots.txt to only allow search engines to crawl one type of gallery - for instance, if they crawled only the galleries organized by species(e.g. goldfinch.php), all the photos on my site would be found exactly once. However, the Google content guidelines recommend against blocking crawler access to duplicate information. Should I go ahead and use robots.txt anyway? Or is there a better solution?

How can I instruct nautilus to pre-generate PDF thumbnails?

I have a large library of PDF documents (papers, lectures, handouts) that I want to be able to quickly navigate through. For that I need thumbnails. At the same time however, I see that the ~/.thumbnails folder is piling up with thumbs I don't really need. Deleting thumbnail junk without removing the important thumbs is impossible. If I were to delete them, I'd have to go to each and every folder with important PDF documents and let the thumbnail cache regenerate. I would love to able to automate this process. Is there any way I can tell nautilus to pre-cache the thumbs for a set of given directories? Note: I did find a set of bash scripts that appear to do this for pictures and videos, but not for any other documents. Maybe someone more experienced with scripting might be able to adjust these for PDF documents or at least point me in the right direction on what I'd have to modify for this to work with PDF documents as well. Upgrade php5-gd on 12.04?

I'm working with the GD library for image manipulation, to which I need to create some transparent PNGs. Instead, I'm getting a black background. I've looked everywhere on how to generate a blank, transparent PNG canvas with it and all the answers just don't work for me. On further inspection, I'm working with an old GD version: The functions needed to create a transparent PNG requires 2.0.1 altough 2.0.28 or later is recommended. I installed php5-gd with apt-get, and aptitude haven't found new packages. Do I have to add a new PPA? Where can I find it? What about forcing a version? Thanks in advance!
