• ubuntu 12.04 LTS hangs on boot when external monitor is connected

  I have a problem with my fresh installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell M4600: nVidia quadro 2000M i7-2860 16GB ram 128GB SSD Dell/Samsung 750GB HDD IPS RGB laptop display When it is connected via DP++ to the external Dell U2311H monitor, it hangs on boot or when wakening from suspend. If I detach the DP cable it boots normally. I have tried all combinations that I have found, as adding to grub: "no splash", "boot=pci", "acpi=off", etc... I have also changed in nVidia X settings that external monitor is the primary one and also tried to delete monitor.xml file. There is no change it hangs each time after grub. It starts to load daemons then both screens are blank and then completely hangs with beep sound. What I discovered is if I detach the cable and wait for about 2 sec after grub starts booting and then physically connect DP cable while the Ubuntu is still booting everything works normally and I have a picture on my external screen while the laptop screen is off, just as I wanted. Do you maybe know how to solve this issue? Thank You.

• gtk2/mate apps are choppy on debian testing [migrated]

  I have recently upgraded to a core-i7 system and now all the apps from mate (GTK2 based) are very slow. Basically when I switch to a workspace that has a couple mate-terminals open, they are redrawn as if these were sent over the network. GTK3 apps and firefox work properly and are refreshed instantly. I'm running Debian testing. I have tried to reinstall xorg and related packages and everything seems to work fine except for this. Here is my xorg.log. Any hints?

• Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

  I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  My computer crashes like it freezes sometimes but sometimes it jumps to a black screen which I can do nothing about other than restart. I tested if it has anything to do with the programs I normally run or with the ones I installed, but it's a long time I have the problem and I think it also happened in the beginning that I bought this computer. To make sure, I normally run skype and Spiral Knights and some animation softwares like Flash.   I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 11.10 on an i7 with 8gigs of ram. I thought of putting this on askubuntu.com but decided that maybe the question has a much broader appeal. I have the following error message popping up when I run math simulations. CPUn: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = xxxxxxx) CPUn: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = xxxxxxx) I realize that this is a hardware warning message (machine check exception, correct me if I am wrong). How do I turn these messages off? Since it doesn't seem to have a detrimental effect of my calculations or my computer (presumably), I don't like it cluttering up my virtual console screen with hundreds of these messages.

• Amazon EC2 vs Dedicated server at Hetzner, what's the use for EC2?

  After searching the web I still can't find the reason to use EC2. What's the point to scale EC2? If you expect a huge burst in traffic, they say. OK, but what if you already have a couple of sites with good traffic, and for example medium reserved EC2 instance is not enough. You are paying $36.60(medium reserved for 1year) in EU(Ireland) + traffic + optional expenses for databases and S3 if you use them. Of course as some point when you are under $56.6-$66.1 you can optimize your hosting costs with Amazon EC2. But when you get at some point if purchase EX4 server from Hetzner, it will surpass your perfomance needs for a long time, before you get a massive traffic. (I am wrong?) CPU: i7-2600 Quadcore (3.4-3.8 Ghz) RAM: 16 GB HDD: 2x3 TB SATA (6 Gbit/s) - I think that disc performance of a dedicated is better then of Amazon EBS Traffic: 10 TiB in month included. This is what you get from Hetzner for $56(- 19% VAT) or $66 for EU residents. Please, tell me what's the reason to use Amazon? Which load won't a server from Hetzner take, but Amazon Auto Scaling will? The maintenance of dedicated vs EC2 is still the same? Or hardware failure at Amazon, won't ruin your EBS storage? I'm still not at the level when I need expensive hosting, but want to know beforehand, just to be sure if Amazon infrastructure is better then pure performance of Hetzner's hardware.

  I'm looking at building my own PC. An Intel Core i7 960 3.2 Ghz is about £457 in the UK at various online retailers. In the US the price at newegg is $570 (this is about £380 at current exchange rates). 2 questions. 1) Why the difference (about 20%)? All I can think of is sales tax. 2) Am I right in assuming this is just a commodity part - if I ordered one from the US there is no reason it would be any different from one bought in the UK?

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this? • 64 bit Windows 7 + 32 bit windows XP dual boot?

  I have purchased an i7 based PC pre-installed with 64 bit windows 7 (home premium). Unfortunately some third party 32 bit software that I need to use is not working properly (see stackoverflow.com for details). I am now torn between the plan of installing windows XP 32 bit or making it dual boot. Which option do you think will give me the least problems? And if the answer is dual boot, then can you point me to a good guide for how to do it, preferably a guide specifically for my two OS's created in this order (i.e. 7x64 first). EDIT: the performance of my 32bit programs is critical so am concerned about any kind of 32bit XP "emulation".

• Will the Driver Support for Intel HD Graphics be Improved in 12.10?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. This is a core i7 machine with Intel HD graphics and also a separate nVidia VGA card. I had a lot of issues getting Ubuntu 12.04 working on this system. First there were issues booting up the live CD for installation. I worked around that by using the 'nomodeset' option. Then I continued to have similar issues after installation has completed. So I had to permanently add the nomodeset option to my GRUB boot configuration. At the moment I have a working installation but there are many issues: Ubuntu GUI is a bit flaky at times. The mouse pointer goes on and off when hovering over certain icons. Certain things doesn't get rendered properly on the screen. I can't access any of the tty consoles. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen. And once that happens I can't even come back to the UI by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7. I've realized that tty consoles are actually working. I just can't see the text. If I enter a command like 'sudo reboot' into the empty screen the machine reboots. Can't get external displays (monitors, projectors etc) working. But I think this is probably because the VGA out is wired to the nVidia card which is not being used by Linux. colord program crashes every now and then triggering a popup message. So my main question is, will the support for Intel HD graphics be improved in the next release? Or will I have to keep using the nomodeset option in the new release too? Also I appreciate if anybody can shed some light on any of the issues listed above. Thanks in advance.

• Cannot get Virtual PC to install on my machine

  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I ran the tool to check that hardware virtualization is enabled, and it is (i7-2600). I ran the proper version of the Virtual PC download (Windows 7 Professional x64) and I can see the Windows Virtual PC (KB958559) update in my installed updates list. The .msu file runs fine without errors, but even after multiple reboots I can't actually find a trace of Virtual PC anywhere. There is nothing in program files, the start menu, or system32. Am I missing a step?

• No sound Ubuntu 12.04 through HDMI

  Specs: Asus G73JH i7/720; ATI Mobility 5870 I have read through a lot of threads on getting HDMI sound to work and non of them have fixed my issue. Granted I am very new to Linux and know only the GUI aspect of what it does from finding similarities that Windows 7 has. I would like to become a Linux Power User and I figured this would be a good step to get started. I was able to successfully install my graphics driver and it shows in use. I connect the HDMI to my HD TV and I get no sound. I don't care about auto switch for sound, that would be great but not necessary. I just want my sound to work through the HDMI. What I have tried: Changed GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" pact set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-surround Failure: no such entity Sound Settings: Right-click Sound indicator ? Sound Settings ? Output Tab, and set Digital Output (S/PDIF) Built in Audio Speakers Built in Audio I only get 2 settings. If I right-click the area below those 2 in the "play sound through" box, I get no "show hidden devices". I am also doing all this with the HDMI connected to eliminate any possibility for error.

• Enabling GTX 570

  Hello i just built up my new system: Asus Rock Z77 Extreme 4 Intel i7 3770k 16 Gb Corsair Ram Zotac Nvidia GTX 570 bequiet! 630W Power supply 120 GB SSD So after i installed UBUNTU 12.04 64 bit. It ran smoothly. I downloaded and installed all the recommended updates. After checking the Sytem details the GTX 570 didnt show up as graphics unit. so i figured i needed to download the drivers. So i did but being a complete newbie to linux i didnt succeed in installing them. (I think) Anyway after several tries and errors i shut down the PC and restarted it. Resultung in do Signal to my screen after trying to reboot and all the monitor outs with no result i took out the graphic card and now it boots normally but after booting it says there is a problem with the system the graphics cant be recognized something something. So Question A: What do i do? I Like linux but the arbitrarity of the Errors that occur without any changes to the system scare me. Question B: Is there A beginners guide to Ubuntu where i could start from scratch because i really want this to work? Question C: Now that the System is (suddently) showing these graphic errors So far without visible consequence despite the error message. should i reinstall the GPU and give the driver installation another try or the other way around? • Using TrueCrypt (software encryption) with an SSD

  I use full drive encryption (FDE) w/ TrueCrypt on my laptop. I have a 2nd gen I7 with AES instruction support, so honestly I can't even notice a speed change on the system with it on. My question, is for those who know about SSD's a lot. I previously (early 2011) read articles about how software encryption will negate the speed benefits that an SSD provides - because of the need for the SSD to send a delete command, then a write command, for every encrypted write - instead of just writing over data like a regular HDD would (or something like this...honestly I can't remember...ha!). Anyway, any improvements in this field? Is it pointless for me to grab an SSD if I'm using FDE? Thanks all.

It was the highest option for intel for this laptop. So i am assuming it is somewhat fast. But i'd like to learn what these specs mean.   I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion. • If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

  I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks. • Ubuntu 11.04 64bits Keeps Randomly Freezing

  This has been a real headache for me since the number of freezes has increase from twice a week to about 1 or twice a day. The system just halts and nothing can be done but hitting the restart button. At the beginning I thought it was related to Flash since I was getting random freezes when playing full screen flash videos online. I also thought it could be the wireless pci card. But the system has freezed using browsing around GNOME. The truth is, the freezes are really random and strange. I checked this thread Ubuntu keeps randomly freezing and try to ssh my computer using another one, but I could not ssh since it was really totally frozen. NumLock or CapsLock wasn't responding or blinking. Since I could not ssh I, also ignored this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze According to my wife, the system has also halted under Win7 Pro 64bit but with less frequency. Here is my system configuration Intel Core i7 2600k ASRock Z68 Extreme3 gen3 Motherboard Crucial M4 128GB CT128M4SSD2 SSD WD Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA II G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR2 OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply Rosewill RNX-N300X PCI Wireless Adapter No external Graphics Card I remove the Wireless card and used Ethernet to see if the problem was the that, but I got a freeze after doing that. I also ran memtest86 and everything was ok. The only other thing I might suspect of is the SSD. I will try to clone the SSD to a HDD to see if that solve the problem. At this point I am stuck with the freezes. Do anyone have a clue of why this is happening and how can i solve this?

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • Why won't Windows use the other CPU cores?

  In Windows Task Manager the Performance tab shows the first CPU maxed out, the other 7 just idling along with the occasional spike. What gives? More info: I've got 8GB and only 4.5GB are being used. The Processes tab has no indication of any process hogging processing power. In fact System Idle Process is 98-99. When I program stuff and have like 8 to 12 applications going (several directly unrelated to programming of course) my computer slows to a crawl. • computer reboots randomly, can't find ssd

  My comp's been restarting at random times, and when it comes back the SSD drive can't be found by the BIOS and it doesn't boot. Powering down and starting up again fixes it 90% of the time, with a second reboot occasionally required. Does not seem to be heat related; it's never happened with me actually on the computer. It has happened while acting as the squeezebox server, however. It's a Sandy-Bridge i7 arch if that helps. To add: I've also run Windows Memtest and it came back with no issues.

I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board?   Is there any way to zoom in, in the System Internals Process Explorer graph? Background I'm trying to work out why my PC freezes/locks up for about a second (the pointer does not move) every so often. This has only been happening for the last 2 days. There is a very narrow spike associated with the freeze, but it's hard to hover over it an analyse what is causing it.
