  • Second HDD not seen by Windows 7 on Dell Xps l501x

    I have a Dell XPS Laptop (l501x). I have replaced the original Seagate 500GB hard drive with an SSD Intel 320 120GB when I first purchased it a year ago. It's been working great. The laptop is booting in about 23 seconds, so the SSD is great. I have an Acronis image created that I came back to every three months just to keep everything clean. The SSD is partitioned with one logical drive for my data. So, recently I thought since I am not using my optical drive often enough to swap it out with a HDD caddy and add my seagate 500gb hard drive. I ordered the caddy placed the HDD in it and now load Windows. It just hangs on the screen that should show the Windows logo. I have tried everything that I know and searched it online. I have uninstalled the SATA controller AHCI and let Windows install it. Still will not boot into windows. I wanted to mention that the Seagate 500GB drive was the one that came with my laptop before I switched to the Intel SSD. As you know Intel has this application called Intel Rapid Technology which loads once in a while and shows the second hard drive, but then, when I restart it hangs again and Windows will not load. As soon as I remove the HDD Caddy and restart it loads Windows fine. I also formated the Seagate 500GB HDD in NTFS and still Windows will not load. When I go into the BIOS it shows the Fixed SSD and also "Sata ODD 500GB" instead of the optical drive but it will not boot into Windows when the HDD caddy is present. There is nothing wrong with the caddy. I have another laptop (Asus) and I installed the HDD caddy and Windows 7 loads without any glitch. I don't get it. I have also flashed the BIOS because Dell had a new version (A08). I also wanted to add that I refreshed Disk Management and the Device Manager and the second drive does not display. At this point I think it's a Windows issue so before I reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium from scratch I wanted to see if there was anything I was missing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 on my Lenovo U410 laptop. When I launch installation no partitions shows up. The U410 has 2 HDDs. 32 GB SSD on /dev/sda and a 500 HDD on /dev/sdb Ideally I would like to install Ubuntu on the 32GB SSD and keep Windows on the 500 GB one and not use the Intel Smart Response Technolog. I'm ok with flashing my drive and starting from scratch with this. Or do you'll have any better suggestions on how to go about partitioning my drive and how to do it?

  • Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

    I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ?     I think my HDD might have crashed. I don't want to lose data if this happens again. I have dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system. What is the best way to backup data and other software settings in Ubuntu? I don't care much about Windows partition, important stuff is in Ubuntu. I have 1 Tb external HDD (laptop HDD is of 500 gb total). One way would be to run rsync every day (or via cronjob) to backup everything to external HDD. What might be better ways of achieving this (backup)? Also are instant backup software recommended? Are there any disadvantages of instant backup as opposed to daily rsync?

  • Ubuntu 11.10 USB 3.0 HDD

    I have a problem with my external HDD (WD My Book Essential 1TB) working on USB 3.0 port. I'm using dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, both 64 bit. While I'm running Windows and rebooting back to Windows everything works well. When I'm switchin to ubuntu everything works great as well. But after 1st reboot from ubuntu neither windows nor ubuntu mount the external drive. I have to reboot the device manually. I suspect that the problem is with unmounting the device on shutdown on ubuntu. The case concern only usb 3.0. When i plug the same device into usb 2 port the problem doesn't persist. Does any1 hit the same problem or have a clue what might goin wrong?

  • Installed 11.10 on shared drive, when other partition mounted, HDD shown full

    I just partitioned a 500GB HDD 50%-50%. I installed ubuntu 11.10 on one half and copied a load of files onto the other. When I don't mount the other partition, it shows I have used 12.1GB and have about 240GB free. The second I mount the other partition, I can't copy any files over and get a disk full message. There is about 10-20GB Free on the other partition. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

    Building my FIRST computer. Will start with at least - one HDD, I purchased a WD SATA HDD a 10,000RPM VelociRaptor 500GB. I have read that if you use one of the settings, can't remember what it's called, that it would make an HDD rund at IDE speeds??? Could I or should I run it in RAID instead? Is RAID only for more than one HDD/ssd? I would like to get like a 64GB SSD later to maybe speed things up working together. Thanks

  • Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

    I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

  • Mac HDD Is Encrypted

    I have the hard drive from a PowerMac G5, which was my old computer before it died and I upgraded to Ubuntu Studio. The hard drive its self still works well, but on Ubuntu I can't access most of the files. I plugged it into my MacBook Air and changed some of the perms on some of the folders as a test. This worked for a few, but for others, I was getting the same message Cannot access folder. Access denied. I would like to use this as an external HDD (I have a case and everything), but it's kind of pointless if I can't access the folders that I want. After looking around for a couple of hours, I couldn't find anything that actually gave me an answer. I would like to know if: Anybody else has come upon this problem, If so, have you found a solution? and, What is it?

    I'm using Intellij IDEA for IDE, and I like it a lot. However, it does not have any special "Spring support" (plug-ins/tools). My next project uses Spring (which I'm not very familiar with), and I'm wondering whether I should consider changing my IDE from early on; e.g. to SpringSource eclipse/Intellij IDEA Professional. Do you guys have any experience with these IDE-built-in Spring support? Is it worth using?

    I'm writing this as DevConnections in Las Vegas is happening. Visual Studio 2010 has been released and I now have this 3GB beast installed to my machine. (I'll admit, it has some nice features.) However, while the install was monopolizing my computer's resources I began to wish that my IDE worked more like Google Documents (instantly available, available anywhere, easy to share, easy to collaborate, naturally versioned). A few Google (and StackOverflow) searches led me to : Coderun Bespin I'm well aware that these IDE's are missing a lot of what exists in VS 2010. However, that isn't my question. Instead, I'm wondering what benefits a web-based IDE might have? Assuming a company invests the time to create the missing features, what is the downside?

    Hi all, I'm looking to replace my hard disk, which is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB. My friend told me to get a SATA HDD, not a SATA-II. What is the difference between the two? And is my old HDD a SATA or SATA-II? The new HDD I'm looking at is a Seagate 7200.12 ST3500418AS, which the store assistant told me is a SATA-II. However, the Seagate website labels both as SATA only. I'm afraid that I'll buy a HDD which is incompatible with my system, especially since I'm going to install Windows 7 on it and I previously had the problem of Windows (Vista) setup not recognizing my hard drive. The reason I add this value is to put disks into standby mode after 60 seconds, which is happening after that period (checked with hdparm -C). The first clue I thought that smartd was running and spinning the drive. However, I couldn't find it in ps -aux | grep smart. Additionally, iostat does show that nobody accessed those drives, since Blk_read, Blk_wrtn remain unchanged. I also killed all processes that may be doing something with hdd(eg SAMBA). So I guess the problem is solely with hdparm... I have no more clue where that 5 minute value hides.

  • Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

    A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used to have and I know that his current setup is significantly more powerful than my laptop. And then it turned out he is running Ubuntu off an external HDD hooked up via USB2.0. The HD enclosure is USB3.0 but apparently he can't manage to get it to boot on USB3.0 so he switched to one of the USB2.0 ports or whatever and that works, albeit not very well. Now I would expect USB to add some overhead to communication between the computer and the HDD; SATA is after all designed to get the maximum out of a hard drive, whereas USB is, well, universal. What are your expreriences with booting off external HDDs? Edit: Does anybody know just how much of a slowdown can be expected?

I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized.     Basically I my 12.10 update crashed halfway through, so I've had to start again and put all my data onto an external HDD. Now I'm stuck completely clueless as to how I'll get anything off the hard drive.

  • Can't mount external hard drive

    i have a problem accessing the data on my external hard drive. I recently did a fresh install but mistakenly left my external hard drive plugged in. When I tried to access the data on the external HDD, it says "no files" but recognizes that there is 290 GiB of data on it. The HDD is 350GB big. I checked the drive with Disk Utility and it showed that the hard drive had a bootable flag. So, in the edit partition, I unchecked this bootablity. Now it won't mount in Ubuntu and now my XP can't recognize it at all, whereas I could access the data on the XP machine before. In disk utility, it doesn't give me the option to check the bootable box in again and I can't access the data on XP either. Any ideas on how to fix it?

If I'm not mistaken, Vim and Emacs are just text editors, similar to notepad, but with syntax highlighting.
