  Does anyone know of a good tutorial on the distinction between the MPMoviePlayer vs AVAudioPlayer vs MPMusicPlayer? I want to play audio from an mp3 file available at an external URL. Ideally it is played in an iPod-like audio view. I toyed with MPMoviePlayer but it appears to be more suitable for video, as when audio starts a "movie playing" message displays, the controls disappear and a white quicktime splash page displays. I would like the standard ipod audio controls to display all the time, and to customize the image behind them.

  Applications which run on mobile devices have special user interface requirements. I think Apple did a great job introducing innovative controls on the iPhone/iPod touch platform. Now, I have to design an application for the Windows Mobile platform using the .NET Compact Framework (Visual Studio 2008). I wonder if there are some commercial or open source UI control sets available which are similar to the iPhone / iPod touch UI elements: Scrolling panels based on gestures Instead of a dropdownlist: a new panel with a large list of items Sliding panels etc. I couldn't find any useful products/code. Maybe there is somebody out there with more experience who could help.

  I have just uploaded my first app to iTunes Connect and noticed that my list of supported devices is appearing as follows... Device Requirements : Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. I've developed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch and have not yet done any testing on the iPad simulator. I therefore don't want the app submission testers to try running my app on an iPad and rejecting it because of some minor issue. I've looked at setting the required device capabilities in my info.plist, but that doesn't appear to allow me to restrict at a device level. Is this a by-product of building using the 3.1.3 SDK? Are apps built using this SDK automatically upscaled to work on the iPad?

I checked my iPhone developer account, there I got that I can distribute my application via Adhoc Distribution up to 100 iPhone or iPod touch users. So I think it should be best way to distribute my application to that XYZ organization. On further searching I found that there is also an - iPhone Developer Enterprise Program, which is available to companies with 500 or more employees and a Dun & Bradstreet number. So I want to know - which will be the best way for me according to my requirements ? Also I want to know that say if I choose Adhoc distribution then is there any way for automatic up-gradation in it ie. to install new version of my application on user's iPhone or iPod without deleting the old version.   I am playing sounds in loop in my app. So it should continue playing through out the app. but sometimes it stops after playing sound for 3/4 times.I don't understand whats happening. I am using audio-toolbox framework for playing sound. creating audio queue and then playing sounds in loop. I am also playing sound from ipod library using mediaplayer. Same thing happening with song from ipod. I have set [musicPlayer setRepeatMode: MPMusicRepeatModeOne]; but still it stops after 3/4 times.

• Develop iPhone application remotely?

  4 java developers are new to iPod Touch/iPhone app development. They have an idea for an app. They have never used Xcode or Macs before. Instead of spending money for a new iMac or Mac Mini for each of them, my boss would like to sell them a $999 Apple server, hosted at a facility connected a single T1 line, and have all 4 people work remotely in Xcode. Is this feasible? Is anyone doing anything like this? Specifically, is 1 T1 enough for realistic remote app development? Would they have to work in black & white via Logmein or Gotomeeting to get decent speed? Can four people work remotely together on an Xcode project at the same time? Do they absolutely need their own Macs to connect their iPod Touches or iPhones physically to, or can they connect to their existing PCs with iTunes and install their in-development apps that way?

  I have a set of objects in a Vector from which I'd like to select a random subset (e.g. 100 items coming back; pick 5 randomly). In my first (very hasty) pass I did an extremely simple and perhaps overly clever solution: Vector itemsVector = getItems(); Collections.shuffle(itemsVector); itemsVector.setSize(5); While this has the advantage of being nice and simple, I suspect it's not going to scale very well, i.e. Collections.shuffle() must be O(n) at least. My less clever alternative is Vector itemsVector = getItems(); Random rand = new Random(System.currentTimeMillis()); // would make this static to the class List subsetList = new ArrayList(5); for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { // be sure to use Vector.remove() or you may get the same item twice subsetList.add(itemsVector.remove(rand.nextInt(itemsVector.size()))); } Any suggestions on better ways to draw out a random subset from a Collection?

  Okay, here is my problem: Im implementing an algorithm in Java and part of it will be following: The Question is to how to do what I will explain now in an efficient way. given: array a of length n integer array perm, which is a permutation of [1..n] now I want to shuffle the array a, using the order determined by array perm, i.e. a=[a,b,c,d], perm=[2,3,4,1] ------ shuffledA[b,c,d,a], I figured out I can do that by iterating over the array with: shuffledA[i]=a[perm[i-1]], (-1 because the permutation indexes in perm start with 1 not 0) Now I want to do some operations on shuffledA... And now I want to do the reverse the shuffle operation. This is where I am not sure how to do it. Note that a can hold an item more than once, i.e. a=[a,a,a,a] If that was not the case, I could iterate perm, and find the corresponding indexes to the values. Now I thought that using a Hashmap instead of the the perm array will help. But I am not sure if this is the best way to do.

  I am trying to create a representation of various types of card that inherit from a generic card class and which all contain references to their owning decks. I tried re-declaring them, as suggested here, but it still won't convert to the specific card type. The code I currently have is as such: public class Deck<T> : List<T> where T : Card { void Shuffle() { throw new NotImplementedException("Shuffle not yet implemented."); } } public class Card { public Deck<Card> OwningDeck { get; set; } } public class FooCard : Card { public Deck<FooCard> OwningDeck { get { return (Deck<FooCard>)base.OwningDeck; } set { OwningDeck = value; } } } The compile-time error I am getting: Error 2 Cannot convert type 'Game.Cards.Deck' to 'Game.Cards.Deck' And a warning suggesting I use a new operator to specify that the hiding is intentional. Would doing so be a violation of convention? Is there a better way? My question to stackoverflow is this: Can what I am trying to do be done elegantly in the .NET type system? If so, can some examples be provided?

• Customize the Background in Boxee

  Are you a Boxee user who thinks the default background is little boring? Today we’ll take a look at how to freshen up the look of Boxee by changing the background. Boxee Background When you log into Boxee, select the Settings button at the upper left corner of the Home page.   Select General on the Settings screen. When you select or hover your mouse over the Background Image button, you’ll see options to set a background image or set a background image folder. You’ll have the option of settings a single static image as your background, or choosing an images folder.   If you choose a folder, Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder. To set Background images folder, select that option. Browse for your image folder.. And then select OK.   Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder.   Images will change every ten seconds.   If you prefer a single static image, select Set background image   Choose a image and select OK. Now just enjoy you nice new backgrounds.   If you ever wish to revert back to the default Boxee background, simply select Reset Images on the Settings \ General screen. Adding your own backgrounds is a nice way to customize your Boxee experience. Ideally, you’ll want to choose high resolution images and images oriented as landscape rather than portrait. • Extremely large spike in traffic on the 1st - 4th of every month from mobile browsers

  I've noticed that on the 1st - 4th of the recent months (since January), several sites I maintain are getting thousands of requests from mobile browsers, whereas throughout the rest of the month, the numbers are in the single or double digits. Has anybody else noticed this sort of behavior? I don't have the exact user agents logged, but my analysis software (WebTrends) reports the traffic as mostly iPhone/iPad/iPod, Android, and Blackberry.
