  • Replies to request coming over a relay goes to relay's internal IP, not to original request's source IP

    - by seaquest
Dhcpd running on Linux gets a dhcp request over dhcrelay which is running on other remote machine. Oct 6 10:09:46 2012 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 (oguz-U300) via 172.16.17.81 tcpdump: listening on eth1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes 10:35:01.112500 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: UDP (17), length: 328) 192.168.0.81.67 > 192.168.0.1.67: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 00:1e:68:06:eb:37, length: 300, hops:1, xid:0xe378fc7e, flags: [none] (0x0000) Gateway IP: 172.16.17.81 Client Ethernet Address: 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 [|bootp] It matches to a subnet and send reply. However reply does not go to the requesting dhcrelay external IP(192.168.0.81). Instead, it goes to the internal interface IP of machine running dhcrelay. And I think because of this remote machine running dhcrelay or the dhcrealy itself discarding packet. Oct 6 10:09:46 2012 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 172.16.17.11 to 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 (oguz-U300) via 172.16.17.81 10:35:02.050108 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: UDP (17), length: 328) 192.168.0.1.67 > 172.16.17.81.67: BOOTP/DHCP, Reply, length: 300, hops:1, xid:0xe378fc7e, flags: [none] (0x0000) Your IP: 172.16.17.11 Gateway IP: 172.16.17.81 Client Ethernet Address: 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 [|bootp] Is this a normal behaviour? But this does not help ) Regards, -- Oguz YILMAZ UPDATE: The first problem is found. I have configured dhcrelay only on listening internel interface. It seems (of course) is should also listen to external interface for replies. It appears it is not important where the packet destined to. dhrelay will forward it to internal net. HOWEVER, I have deleted route on dhcpd server to reach 172.16.17.x subnet. It again tries to send reply to 172.16.17.81. Because it does not know the route it send it from default gateway to the internet. eth0: IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: UDP (17), length: 328) 192.168.1.2.67 > 172.16.17.81.67: BOOTP/DHCP, Reply, length: 300, hops:1, xid:0x32830125, secs:3, flags: [none] (0x0000) eth0: Your IP: 172.16.17.11 eth0: Gateway IP: 172.16.17.81 eth0: Client Ethernet Address: 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 [|bootp] How can I force dhcpd to force to send replies to requesting IP? Because, it is not much meaningful to add routes to subnet we distribute IP for. Internet - dhcpd - 192.168.0.1 - SOMENET - 192.168.0.81 - dhcrelay - 172.16.17.0/24 192.168.0.1 has no route for 172.16.17.0 and has no interface directly attached to that net.

  • Audigy 2 Coaxial to Coaxial/Optical connection possible?

    - by Chris
Hello, The original question is deleted, and asked again below with accurate information. Edit: Excuse me for my ignorance, my friend has a Logitech Z-5500 set. I thought after comparing those systems on Google images that he had the Z-680, but he hasn't. This set has a single Digital coaxial for DVD or CD players or PC sound cards (requires coaxial cable, sold separately) cable. This single cable was connected to the orange tulip connector (SPDIF coaxial out) on the backside of his onboard HP Elite m9070, this connector is broken. How can I use the digital out with a single cable coaxial cable on the Audigy2 (see image below) (I have the following converters for my disposal, can I use one of these? 3.5 mm male - coax optical mini optical male - toslink optical female 2 x toslink optical female, toslink coupler, optical audio extension note: Is it possible to connect a toslink cable with an mini optical male - toslink converter on the digital out of the Audigy 2? • ScreenShare: command line and observe only.

    - by Shyam
Hi, I have a wide TV screen that is attached to a Mac Mini. I am able to use this screen as a second screen using an application like ScreenRecycler. However, Sometimes I want to demonstrate what I am doing on my box on this TV screen. As this TV is attached to a Mac Mini, I want to have a screen sharing done reversed. As I know screen share can be done in observe mode and full screen, this would be more than sufficient. Because it would be pretty useless to run it continuously, I want it on demand. For this, I want to use SSH. So the only thing I would like to know is, how do I start screen sharing in from a Terminal Session. On Windows, I could start an application by using "start notepad.exe", I am looking for something similar. Eventually, I want to make this work on other boxes too. Thanks for your help!

  • 10 gigabit or 1 gigabit switch

    - by Guntis
We are planning to move mysql to dedicated box. At this moment we have web servers and mysql is running on each. Question is: cheaper is to buy 10G switch and put 10G network card into mysql server. Or buy normal gigabit switch and connect mysql box to switch with multiple network cables. In 1G scenario then we give each web server different mysql IP address. I don't think, that mysql box with one 1G link is enough to to satisfy multiple web box mysql traffic. At this moment we have 3 servers witch are running mysql/web. Plan is to add fourth server for mysql only. Thanks. Edit: if we buy 1G switch with mini-GBIC ports. Can we put in mini-GBIC 10G connectors and then connect mysql box to that port?

  • Choosing A Power Supply [closed]

    - by Geeks On Hugs
Possible Duplicate: Power Supply Capacity Formula How can I check if my system needs more PSU power? I'm not sure if it's OK or not to ask a hardware question here. If not please let me know a good place but I've always got good info here so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm custom building a new workstation for coding (Linux/Eclipse). How do I determine how much power the power supply needs? I'm building a mini ITX system on a budget and so I need to get as small as possible that is sufficient. I'll have a mini itx mobo with on board wifi and bluetooth, 8 GB RAM, an Intel i3 3.1 Ghz processor, 64 GB SSD and a slim optical drive. In the future I might add a descrete GPU, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD. What is the minimum power I need and how do I calculate that?

  • What is the right way to use Internet Sharing in OS X?

    - by Bob King
For a while now I've been using the Wireless in my Mac Mini as a seperate WiFi access point because my main router doesn't quite cover my whole house. There is a dedicated CAT 5E line down to the Mini, which has a static IP address. I've turned Internet Sharing on, using Airport/WiFi but it seems my options for security are limited. Can I do WPA2? Also, it seems like my iPhone only connects 25% of the time, and the rest of the time it claims I've given a bad password. I've tried "Forget this network" repeatedly.

  • Inbound connections using Internet Connection Sharing in Apple/Mac/Leopard

    - by tlianza
I have a Mac mini which I'm using to give some other devices wireless access, by sharing it's Airport connection with the local ethernet, and that is plugged into a switch. All devices can get online no problem. (See how: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20041112101646643 and http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304 ) The issue is that I need to be able to connect in to these machines as well (at least, for the Slingbox to work). All the devices have 192.168.2.* addresses, and the rest of my local network is on 192.168.1.*. I tried setting a static route so that the 192.168.2.* addresses would use a gateway of 192.168.1.50 (my mac mini's address) but that didn't seem to help. Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible? I admit I'm not certain what Internet Connection sharing is really doing under the hood... perhaps it just does basic nat, and doesn't do the type of routing I'm looking for. If so, anyone know if this is possible?

  • Changing keyboard layout for login screen on Mac OS X

    - by R.A
I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion. Basically I am a developer and practiced coding with DVORAK keyboards. So I changed my keyboard layout to DVORAK and I'm working with it. I'm using the admin user on my Mac Mini. When I restart my computer, during login, the layout is changed to QWERTY and it's hard to type the password. It happens only for the admin user though. If I create the another user and set the layout as DVORAK and restart, that user has the DVORAK keyboard for login. Note: I have a QWERTY keyboard, I'm only changing the layout in the keyboard preferences. So, to summarize, how can I get the DVORAK keyboard layout for the admin login as well?

  • how to create a simple radio station [on hold]

    - by John
I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station. Are there any servers already built for this sort of behaviour? is shoutcast one of the only versions Thanks, John

  • Dynamic to static internal IP address (Snow Leopard server)

    - by bac
I purchased a new Mac mini server, since my old iMac, which was a server pretty much died. My problem is this. How do I change my internal IP address for my mac mini server to a static address, like 192.168.0.2? Before you guys harp on me, my old server was running Ubuntu Hardy and I only had to map the IP address in the router, which would automatically assign the reserved address through DHCP. Now, I know things are different between the two, but my problem is that the mac is not accepting the assigned IP address or the router just is not assigning. However, every time I have manually changed it on the Mac to an address of my choice, it takes the computer off the Internet. My router is a NetGear WTG624 v2, I believe. I need this to work, so I can utilize Dynamic DNS.

  • Viewsonic VG2427wm detected max resolution too low

    - by Hassan
So I have a Viewsonic VG2427wm, which supports max resolution of 1920x1080 and I had it working at this resolution from both windows and linux PCs. Now, I need to connect it to my Dell XPS17 (L702x), which has only DP mini and HDMI, so I'm trying to connect this monitor via HDMI-to-DVI adapter (doesn't work at all) and via DP-mini-to-DVI adapter. The later works, but is limiting my max resolution to 1680x1050. Using same two adapters to connect my dell monitor works fine, so I don't suspect any of the adapters to be faulty. The driver is the latest viewsonic driver (although it's been last updated 3 years back). Any ideas, how I can force it to display it's correct native resolution?

  • How can I password-protect a Mac shared folder on a Windows workgroup?

    - by Phillip Oldham
We have a Mac-mini running 10.5.8 which already acts as a fileserver for our simple Windows (mixed XP/Vista) workgroup. The Mac-mini is on the same workgroup and the files are shared via SMB, FTP, and AFP. Basic file-sharing is working, and has been for some time. We'd now like to add an additional directory/share which can be secured by a password so that only a small number on the network have access. Is this possible? I've already tried creating the additional folder on the mac system, adding it to the shared folders, and limiting it to a specific "shared user", however it's not possible to log-in from an XP machine. Adding a sub-directory to the currently working share and giving limiting it's access to the shared user doesn't work either.

  • Successfully concatenating multiple videos

    - by wiseguydigital
My mission is to create videos out of old web slideshows. To start with I have jpegs and audio files that worked as Flash slideshows in an old system, structured such as this: Audio structure my_audio_1.mp3 (this file is a 3 second mp3 of silence) my_audio_2.mp3 my_audio_3.mp3 my_audio_4 etc... roughly 30 mp3s per slideshow Image structure my_image_1.jpg (this acts as the opening slide) my_image_2.jpg my_image_3.jpg my_image_4. etc... roughly 30 images per slideshow. As there are almost 100 slideshows that must be converted to video, I have created a web-based interface using PHP to automate the process, that sits on a local system and attempts to combine the files using shell_exec(). The process uses the following workflow: Loop through each slide and make an avi or mpeg. So for instance my_mini_video_2.avi would be a video that consists of my_image_2.jpg and has a soundtrack of my_audio_2.mp3. This slide would last the length of my_audio_2.mp3. Join / stitch / concat all of the mini videos to create the final video (Using a combination of cat and either mencoder or ffmpeg (I have also tried avimerge but to no avail). Transcode the new 'master' video to various formats such as flv etc. I thought this would be simple and have been close on many occasions but it still won't work. I can't get past stage 2 as I can't get a perfect 'master' video. I have now experimented with Mencoder, FFMpeg and seem to have been through every combination I can think of. The problem is that the audio and visuals never sync, no matter what I try. Also, I have even tried created audio-less mini videos, joining the MP3s into one long MP3 using both cat and mp3wrap and then assigning the new long MP3 as the audio track, but this always produces either a very short file or a badly slowed down file and makes the female voiceover sound like a male boxer!!! There appears to be no problems at all with the original files. Does anybody have any experience in producing a video successfully from the same kind of starting point? Or any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? As an example: If I create silent mini-videos, and stitch them together into 'temp-master.mpg' and then join the MP3s together into single MP3 called 'temp-master-audio.mp3', the audio file's duration is 09:10 and the video file's duration is 08:35. They should be the same and the audio will seem sloooow. I haven't posted code as I have written lots and lots of combinations.

  • What are my options for booting OSX 10.6 when my DVD drive is broken?

    - by Kev
I'm about to completely re-pave my Mac Mini but the DVD drive has died on me which means I can't boot from the installation media. I know I can boot from a USB stick but I don't have one available, what are my options given the following hardware at hand? Netgear ReadyNAS Duo NAS (NIC or USB only, no Firewire) USB HDD (no Firewire) I've ripped an ISO of the installation disk, can I somehow get the Mini to boot from this image using one of the above? If I decide not to re-pave but just upgrade, can the Mac be upgraded just using an OSX 10.6 ISO image on its disk?

  • Can I reprogram a microphone input to be used as an audio output? (on XP)

    - by qftme
I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. I would really appreciate any advice on this and eagerly await your response. Kind regards, qftme :)

  • Ruby Rails Mongrel Sever failing to serve OXS1.6

    - by Mark V
    Hi there I'm fairly new to Rails and the Mac, and doing my first deploy... I'm trying to set up my rails app on a brand new Apple mini-server running OXS1.6 (Snow Leopard). It is currently running fine on my new iMac i7 (same OS). I start mongrel with this command: mongrel_rails start -e production -p 3000 -d -a 127.0.0.1 --debug And it starts giving this output in the log/mongrel.log ** Daemonized, any open files are closed. Look at log/mongrel.pid and log/mongrel.log for info. ** Starting Mongrel listening at 127.0.0.1:3000 ** Installing debugging prefixed filters. Look in log/mongrel_debug for the files. ** Starting Rails with production environment... /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. The difference is that accessing http://127.0.0.1:3000 on my iMac serves up the app's login page. Where as on the mac mini-server accessing the same results in this error 500 text from mongrel: "We're sorry, but something went wrong." It's as if rails is not working. I'm pretty good at figuring things out if I have some log file messages to direct me, but mongrel.log has no error message (the output remains the same as above), and the log/production.log is empty (which makes me think rails has not started?). My gems are all the same versions between machines and so is the app code; and there are no clues I can see in any of the mongrel_debug logs, except that rails.log on the mac mini-server and the iMac are different. After a start and single access, first is the rails.log from the mac mini-server: D, [2010-04-15T13:45:34.870406 #6914] DEBUG -- : TRACING ON Thu Apr 15 13:45:34 +1200 2010 Thu Apr 15 13:46:08 +1200 2010 REQUEST / --- !map:Mongrel::HttpParams SERVER_NAME: 127.0.0.1 HTTP_ACCEPT: application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5 HTTP_CACHE_CONTROL: max-age=0 HTTP_HOST: 127.0.0.1:3000 HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_0; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.342.9 Safari/533.2 REQUEST_PATH: / SERVER_PROTOCOL: HTTP/1.1 HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE: en-US,en;q=0.8 REMOTE_ADDR: 127.0.0.1 PATH_INFO: / SERVER_SOFTWARE: Mongrel 1.1.5 SCRIPT_NAME: / HTTP_VERSION: HTTP/1.1 REQUEST_URI: / SERVER_PORT: "3000" HTTP_ACCEPT_CHARSET: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3 REQUEST_METHOD: GET GATEWAY_INTERFACE: CGI/1.2 HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip,deflate,sdch HTTP_CONNECTION: keep-alive While on my iMac it seems the same except for the addition of the HTTP_COOKIE and the HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH, here is rails.log from my iMac # Logfile created on Thu Apr 15 13:41:42 +1200 2010 by logger.rb/22285 D, [2010-04-15T13:41:42.934088 #2070] DEBUG -- : TRACING ON Thu Apr 15 13:41:42 +1200 2010 Thu Apr 15 13:42:05 +1200 2010 REQUEST / --- !map:Mongrel::HttpParams SERVER_NAME: 127.0.0.1 HTTP_ACCEPT: application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5 HTTP_HOST: 127.0.0.1:3000 HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_3; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.342.9 Safari/533.2 REQUEST_PATH: / SERVER_PROTOCOL: HTTP/1.1 HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH: "\"216cc63ce3c1f286ef8dd4f18f354f6e\"" HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE: en-US,en;q=0.8 REMOTE_ADDR: 127.0.0.1 PATH_INFO: / SERVER_SOFTWARE: Mongrel 1.1.5 SCRIPT_NAME: / HTTP_COOKIE: _ServiceApp_session=BAh7DDonY3VzdG9tZXJfbGlzdF9maWx0ZXJfam9iX3N0YXR1c19pZGn6Og9zZXNzaW9uX2lkIiU0ZTk1ZWZjMmViMGU3NjE2YzA0NDc2YTkxYzJlNDZiOToaY3VycmVudF9jdXN0b21lcl9uYW1lIilUSEUgQ1VTVE9NRVIgTkFNRSBORUVEUyBUTyBCRSBMT0FERUQ6EF9jc3JmX3Rva2VuIjFuT1JMUWk0NlZrWlM3c2lUN3BaWCs5NkhRajhxYnFwRnhzVHVTWXEvUWY0PToZam9iX2xpc3RfZmlsdGVyX3RleHQiADogam9iX2xpc3RfZmlsdGVyX2VtcGxveWVlX2lkafo6HmN1c3RvbWVyX2xpc3RfZmlsdGVyX3RleHQiAA%3D%3D--d01bc5d0b457ad524d16cb3402b5dfed9afce83d HTTP_VERSION: HTTP/1.1 REQUEST_URI: / SERVER_PORT: "3000" HTTP_ACCEPT_CHARSET: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3 REQUEST_METHOD: GET GATEWAY_INTERFACE: CGI/1.2 HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip,deflate,sdch HTTP_CONNECTION: keep-alive Any direction or ideas would be greatly appreciated.     i have very huge code about 600 lines plus. cant post the whole thing here. but a particular code snippet is taking so much time,leading to problems. here i post that part of code please tell me what to do speed up the processing.. please suggest the part which may be the reason and measure to improve them if this small part of code is understandable. using_data={} def join_cost(a , b): global using_data #print a #print b save_a=[] save_b=[] print 1 #for i in range(len(m)): #if str(m[i][0])==str(a): save_a=database_index[a] #for i in range(len(m)): # if str(m[i][0])==str(b): #print 'save_a',save_a #print 'save_b',save_b print 2 save_b=database_index[b] using_data[save_a[0]]=save_a s=str(save_a[1]).replace('phone','text') s=str(s)+'.pm' p=os.path.join("c:/begpython/wavnk/",s) x=open(p , 'r') print 3 for i in range(6): x.readline() k2='a' j=0 o=[] while k2 is not '': k2=x.readline() k2=k2.rstrip('\n') oj=k2.split(' ') o=o+[oj] #print o[j] j=j+1 #print j #print o[2][0] temp=long(1232332) end_time=save_a[4] #print end_time k=(j-1) for i in range(k): diff=float(o[i][0])-float(end_time) if diff<0: diff=diff*(-1) if temp>diff: temp=diff pm_row=i #print pm_row #print temp #print o[pm_row] #pm_row=3 q=[] print 4 l=str(p).replace('.pm','.mcep') z=open(l ,'r') for i in range(pm_row): z.readline() k3=z.readline() k3=k3.rstrip('\n') q=k3.split(' ') #print q print 5 s=str(save_b[1]).replace('phone','text') s=str(s)+'.pm' p=os.path.join("c:/begpython/wavnk/",s) x=open(p , 'r') for i in range(6): x.readline() k2='a' j=0 o=[] while k2 is not '': k2=x.readline() k2=k2.rstrip('\n') oj=k2.split(' ') o=o+[oj] #print o[j] j=j+1 #print j #print o[2][0] temp=long(1232332) strt_time=save_b[3] #print strt_time k=(j-1) for i in range(k): diff=float(o[i][0])-float(strt_time) if diff<0: diff=diff*(-1) if temp>diff: temp=diff pm_row=i #print pm_row #print temp #print o[pm_row] #pm_row=3 w=[] l=str(p).replace('.pm','.mcep') z=open(l ,'r') for i in range(pm_row): z.readline() k3=z.readline() k3=k3.rstrip('\n') w=k3.split(' ') #print w cost=0 for i in range(12): #print q[i] #print w[i] h=float(q[i])-float(w[i]) cost=cost+math.pow(h,2) j_cost=math.sqrt(cost) #print cost return j_cost def target_cost(a , b): a=(b+1)*3 b=(a+1)*2 t_cost=(a+b)*5/2 return t_cost r1='shht:ra_77' r2='grx_18' g=[] nodes=[] nodes=nodes+[[r1]] for i in range(len(y_in_db_format)): g=y_in_db_format[i] #print g #print g[0] g.remove(str(g[0])) nodes=nodes+[g] nodes=nodes+[[r2]] print nodes print "lenght of nodes",len(nodes) lists=[] #lists=lists+[r1] for i in range(len(nodes)): for j in range(len(nodes[i])): lists=lists+[nodes[i][j]] #lists=lists+[r2] print lists distance={} for i in range(len(lists)): if i==0: distance[str(lists[i])]=0 else: distance[str(lists[i])]=long(123231223) #print distance group_dist=[] infinity=long(123232323) for i in range(len(nodes)): distances=[] for j in range(len(nodes[i])): #distances=[] if i==0: distances=distances+[[nodes[i][j], 0]] else: distances=distances+[[nodes[i][j],infinity]] group_dist=group_dist+[distances] #print distances print "group_distances",group_dist #print "check",group_dist[0][0][1] #costs={} #for i in range(len(lists)): #if i==0: # costs[str(lists[i])]=1 #else: # costs[str(lists[i])]=get_selfcost(lists[i]) path=[] for i in range(len(nodes)): mini=[] if i!=(len(nodes)-1): #temp=long(123234324) #Now calculate the cost between the current node and each of its neighbour for k in range(len(nodes[(i+1)])): for j in range(len(nodes[i])): current=nodes[i][j] #print "current_node",current j_distance=join_cost( current , nodes[i+1][k]) #t_distance=target_cost( current , nodes[i+1][k]) t_distance=34 #print distance #print "distance between current and neighbours",distance total_distance=(.5*(float(group_dist[i][j][1])+float(j_distance))+.5*(float(t_distance))) #print "total distance between the intial_nodes and current neighbour",total_distance if int(group_dist[i+1][k][1]) > int(total_distance): group_dist[i+1][k][1]=total_distance #print "updated distance",group_dist[i+1][k][1] a=current #print "the neighbour",nodes[i+1][k],"updated the value",a mini=mini+[[str(nodes[i+1][k]),a]] print mini

  • HTG Explains: Just How Bad Are Android Tablet Apps?

    - by Chris Hoffman
Apple loves to criticize the state of Android tablet apps when pushing its own iPad tablets. But just how bad is the Android tablet app situation? Should you avoid Android tablets like the Nexus 7 because of the apps? It’s clear that Apple’s iPad is way ahead when it comes to the sheer quantity of tablet-optimized apps. It’s also clear that some popular apps — particularly touch-optimized games — only show up on iPad. But that’s not the whole story. The Basics First, let’s get an idea of the basic stuff that will work well for you on Android. An excellent web browser. Chrome has struggled with performance on Android, but hits its stride on the Nexus 7 (2013). Great, tablet-optimized apps for all of Google’s services, from YouTube to Gmail and Google Maps. Everything you need for reading, from Amazon’s Kindle app for eBooks, Flipboard and Feedly for new articles from websites, and other services like the popular Pocket read-it-later service. Apps for most popular media services, from Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube for videos to Pandora, Spotify, and Rdio for music. A few things aren’t available — you won’t find Apple’s iTunes and Amazon still doesn’t offer an Amazon Instant Video app for Android, while they do for iPad and even their own Android-based Kindle Fire devices. Android has very good app coverage when it comes to consuming content, whether you’re reading websites and ebooks or watching videos and listening to music. You can play almost any Android smartphone game, too. For content consumption, Android is better than something like Windows 8, which lacks apps for Google services like YouTube and still doesn’t have apps for popular media services like Spotify and Rdio. How Android Scales Smartphone Apps Let’s look at how Android scales smartphone apps. Now, bear with us here — we know “scaling” is a dirty word considering how poorly Apple’s iPad scales iPhone apps, but it’s not as bad on Android. When an iPad runs an iPhone app, it simply doubles the pixels and effectively zooms in. For example, if you had  Twitter app with five tweets visible at once on an iPhone and ran the same app on an iPad, the iPad would simply “zoom in” and enlarge the same screen — you’d still see five tweets, but each tweet would appear larger. This is why developers create optimized iPad apps with their own interfaces. It’s especially important on Apple’s iOS. Android devices come in all shapes and sizes, so Android apps have a smarter, more intelligent way to adapt to different screen sizes. Let’s say you have a Twitter app designed for smartphones and it only shows five tweets at once when run on a phone. If you ran the same app on a tablet, you wouldn’t see the same five tweets — you’d see ten or more tweets. Rather than simply zooming in, the app can show more content at the same time on a tablet, even if it was never optimized for tablet-size screens. While apps designed for smartphones aren’t generally ideal, they adapt much better on Android than they do on an iPad. This is particularly true when it comes to games. You’re capable of playing almost any Android smartphone game on an Android tablet, and games generally adapt very well to the larger screen. This gives you access to a huge catalog of games. It’s a great option to have, especially when you look at Microsoft’s Window 8 and consider how much better the touch-based app and game selection would be if Microsoft allowed its users to run Windows Phone games on Windows 8. 7-inch vs 10-inch Tablets The Twitter example above wasn’t just an example. The official Twitter app for Android still doesn’t have a tablet-optimized interface, so this is the sort of situation you’d have to deal with on an Android tablet. On the popular Nexus 7, Twitter is an example of a smartphone app that actually works fairly well — in portrait mode, you can see many more tweets on screen at the same time and none of the space really feels all that wasted. This is important to consider — smartphone apps like Twitter often scale quite well to 7-inch screens because a 7-inch screen is much closer in form factor to a smartphone than a 10-inch screen is. When you begin to look at 10-inch Android tablets that are the same size as an iPad, the situation changes. While the Twitter app works well enough on a Nexus 7, it looks horrible on a Nexus 10 or other 10-inch tablet. Running many smartphone-designed apps — possible with the exception of games — on a 10-inch tablet is a frustrating, poor experience. There’s much more white, empty space in the interface. It feels like you’re using a smartphone app on a large screen, and what’s the point of that? A tablet-optimized Twitter app for Android is finally on its way, but this same situation will repeat with many other types of apps. For example, Facebook doesn’t offer a tablet-optimized interface, but it’s okay on a Nexus 7 anyway. On a 10-inch screen, it probably wouldn’t be anywhere near as nice an experience. It goes without saying that Facebook and Twitter both offer iPad apps with interfaces designed for a tablet-size screen. Here’s another problematic app — the official Yelp app for Android. Even just using it on a 7-inch Nexus 7 will be a poor experience, while it would be much worse on a larger 10-inch tablet app. Now, it’s true that many — maybe even most — of the popular apps you might want to run today are optimized for Android tablets. But, when you look at the situation when it comes to popular apps like Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp, it’s clear Android is still behind in a meaningful way. Price Let’s be honest. The thing that really makes Android tablets compelling — and the only reason Android tablets started seeing real traction after years of almost complete dominance by Apple’s iPads — is that Android tablets are available for so much cheaper than iPads. Google’s latest Nexus 7 (2013) is available for only $230. Apple’s non-retina iPad Mini is available at $300, which is already $70 more. In spite of that, the iPad Mini has much older, slower internals and a much lower resolution screen. It’s not as nice to look at when it comes to reading or watching movies, and the iPad Mini reportedly struggles to run Apple’s latest iOS 7. In contrast, the new Nexus 7 has a very high resolution screen, speedy internals, and runs Android very well with little-to-no lag in real use. We haven’t had any problems with it, unlike all the problems we unfortunately encountered with the first Nexus 7. For a really comparable experience to the current Nexus 7, you’d want to get one of Apple’s new retina iPad Minis. That would cost you $400, another $170 over the Nexus 7. In fact, it’s possible to regularly find sales on the Nexus 7, so if you waited you could get it for just $200 — half the price of the iPad mini with a comparable screen and internals. (In fairness, the iPad certainly has better hardware — but you won’t feel if it you’re just using your tablet to browse the web, watch videos, and do other typical tablet things.) This makes a tablet like the popular Nexus 7 a very good option for budget-conscious users who just want a high-quality device they can use to browse the web, watch videos, play games, and generally do light computing. There’s a reason we’re focusing on the Nexus 7 here. The combination of price and size brings it to a very good place. It’s awfully cheap for the high-quality experience you get, and the 7-inch screen means that even the non-tablet-optimized apps you may stumble across will often work fairly well. On the other hand, more expensive 10-inch Android tablets are still a tougher sell. For $400-$500, you’re getting awfully close to Apple’s full-size iPad price range and Android tablets don’t have as good an app ecosystem as an iPad. It’s hard to recommend an expensive, 10-inch Android tablet over a full-size iPad to average users. In summary, the Android app tablet app situation is nowhere near as bad as it was a few years ago. The success of the Nexus 7 proves that Android tablets can be compelling experiences, and there are a wide variety of strong apps. That said, more expensive 10-inch Android tablets that compete directly with the full-size iPad on price still don’t make much sense for most people.  Unless you have a specific reason for preferring an Android tablet, it’s tough not to recommend an iPad if you’re looking at spending $400+ on a 10-inch tablet. • OT: Fixing choppy video playback on OS X

    - by terrencebarr
This is a bit off-topic but I wanted to share because it seems a lot of people are running into issues with choppy video playback and stutter on Mac OS X. I am using a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) as a home media center and it has worked great in the past, playing back music and videos from multiple sources (web, quicktime, VLC, EyeTV). A few weeks ago the video playback from all my sources started to become choppy, to stutter, and often the picture would hang for seconds at a time. Totally unusable. Drove me nuts for two weeks. After much research and trial-and-error it turns out the problem was an outdated Flash Player which seems to have messed up the video pipeline for the entire system. The short is, I updated the Flash Player to version 11 directly from the Adobe web site, rebooted the Mac Mini, and all is well again! Judging from the various posts across the web, video playback appears to be a fairly widespread problem for Mac users and I hope this helps some of you out there! And I can’t wait to get rid of Flash altogether – I can’t remember the times it has crashed my browser, hung my system, and screwed up things. Thanks Adobe ;-( Cheers, – Terrence Filed under: Uncategorized Tagged: Adobe Flash, Mac OS X

  • Microeconomical simulation: coordination/planning between self-interested trading agents

    - by Milton Manfried
In a typical perfect-information strategy game like Chess, an agent can calculate its best move by searching the state tree for the best possible move, while assuming that the opponent will also make the best possible move (i.e. Mini-max). I would like to use this approach in a "game" modeling economic activity, where the possible "moves" would be to buy or sell for a given price, and the goal, rather than a specific class of states (e.g. Checkmate), would be to maximize some function F of the agent's state (e.g. F(money, widget) = 10*money + widget). How to handle buy/sell actions that require coordination between both parties, at the very least agreement upon a price? The cheap way out would be to set the price beforehand, maybe based upon the current supply -- but the idea of this simulation is to examine how prices emerge when freely determined by "perfectly rational" agents. A great example of what I do not want is the trading algorithm in SugarScape -- paraphrasing from Growing Artificial Societies p101-102: when a pair of agents interact to trade, they each compute their internal valuations of the goods, then a bargaining process is conducted and a price is agreed to. If this price makes both agents better off, they complete the transaction The protocol itself is beautiful, but what it cannot capture (as far as I can tell) is the ability for an agent to pay more than it might otherwise for a good, because it knows that it can sell it for even more at a later date -- what appears to be called "strategic thinking" in this pape at Google Books Multi-Agent-Based Simulation III: 4th International Workshop, MABS 2003... to get realistic behavior like that, it seems one would either (1) have to build an outrageously-complex internal valuation system which could at best only cover situations that were planned for at compile-time, or otherwise (2) have some mechanism to search the state tree... which would require some way of planning future trades. Note: The chess analogy only works as far as the state-space search goes; the simulation isn't intended to be "zero sum", so a literal mini-max search wouldn't be appropriate -- and ideally, it should work with more than two agents.

  • Tracking subdomains in the same profile as the main domain

    - by Osvaldo
I have a site, let's call it http://www.example.com with a non-universal Google analytics account. Now we have to add new functionalities in a subdomain like https://subdomain.example.com as a micro site. On that subdomain the URL's will be something like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar We can't change the requirements as both main site and mini-site use a different CMS/application. This is strictly a Google Analytics question. But we need to count pageviews and events that happen in that subdomain (with URLs like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar) as belonging to the main domain. So pageviews and events in https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar need to be recorded as if they happened in http://www.example.com/path/to/whatever/I/want Fortunately we have full control on JavaScript in the main domain site and in the subdomain site too. How can we make this work? Do we need to change tracking code both in the main domain and subdomains? Do we need to reconfigure Google Analytics? Please note again that we do not want to create a new view for the subdomain. Both mini-site and main site should be in the same account, property and view.
