  I'm looking for a supplier for hosting a Virtual server, running Windows Server 2008 (R2 ideally) and .NET 4 to run an internet facing ASP.NET web application. I'd also like to be able to remote desktop onto it, and install other apps as necessary, including other websites as and when. I'm based in the UK, so a UK based supplier would be great. I was looking at Fasthosts, but having researched them a bit more, they look like a bad idea.

• What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

• Nexenta under KVM?

  I have an Ubuntu Server running KVM. I'd like to get the benefits of ZFS so I was thinking of installing a virtual machine under KVM running Nexenta (or NexentaStor), allowing that virtual machine to have raw access to a couple of physical hard disks, and then having it share its file system with NFS so that Ubuntu can access it. I've never tried setting up KVM so that the virtual machine has access to physical drives. Does this sound feasible, and is there anything I need to watch out for? Has someone already documented something like this? Does Nexenta/ZFS function basically as well in the virtual environment as if they were running base bones? I can take a small performance hit, but I don't want it to not be as reliable because of the virtualization. Thanks.

• Unable to FTP, any ideas?

  I'm using Windows Server 2003. I have the FTP services installed, router set to DMZ, and currently Anonymous logins allowed. (I know, security risk, but there's nothing important on there and not worried at the moment) So here's the thing... I can ftp to my computer, list directory, get files etc, BUT only if I'm using the command prompt. If I try to log in using IE or any FTP client it's just timing out. I've tried: username@ipaddress ipaddress username:password@ipaddress and not able to get any of them to work. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!!

• Access to self created torrent on public tracker

  Not sure if this is the right site to ask this, but here it goes: Let's say I'd like to share a couple of private files with a few friends. The size of these are quite large, so I've figured the best route to distribute these is via torrent. So, on my home PC I create a torrent and start seeding and announce to a public tracker like openbittorrent and publicbt. Now, both of those are public trackers, but they don't seem to have anyway of searching through what is actually being tracked. If I'm only passing around the torrent file to a few friends, whats the chances that someone else will 'randomly' come across the torrent via the public tracker and start leeching?

• how do I setup Apache's Content-Encoding Header?

  When attempting to validate my site with the W3C validator, it returns the error, "Don't know how to decode Content-Encoding 'none'". Firebug confirms that my server is sending the header, "Content-Encoding: none". But I can't find any directive in apache2.conf or in my vhost that sets the Content-Encoding header. Where does the directive go, and what should it be set to? UPDATE: On further examination it seems something is wrong with mod_deflate (gzip). It's zipping my css files just fine, but is not zipping the html generated by my php scripts. I have: AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css And the pages are showing a mime type of: "text/html". But content encoding is "none" and they aren't zipping. Perhaps these issues are related?

  Ive a 7.5 IIS installed on my server with windows authentication enabled cause i need it for NTLM / SSO on intranet pages. when windows authentication is activated, iis cant authenticate himself on his own webserver.. thats the error i got in the iis log: 2011-11-24 08:47:10 10.50.2.91 POST /ldap.php - 80 - 10.50.2.91 SWIFT_LoginShare 401 2 5 0 so.. how can i make sure, using windows authentication, that iis authenticates himself? thx for your help

• Why does diskpart set the volume attributes on all volumes?

  I was trying to migrate a Win7 OS from a HDD to a SSD. I've created 2 partition with 1024KB offset, with diskpart: 100MB System Reserved and a 60GB for C:. I've cloned their contents using Easeus Disk Copy. I've loaded the Windows 7 Boot DVD, and wanted to use diskpart to drop the letter for the System Reserved partition and make it hidden. select volume 0 detail volume attribute volume set nodefaultdriveletter attribute volume set hidden These 2 attribute set commands actioned on both volumes (0 and 1, MSR and C:) instead of the selected one, and viceversa. I've tried to clear these attributes from volume 1, but it cleared them also from volume 0. Why does DiskPart have this behaviour?

• IPtables Traffic Quota - up and down

  I've been trying to set up traffic quotas for users on a shared server and i believe [with my limited knowledge] that iptables --quota and ports which have been selected for each user [--dport] is the way to do this... iptables -A OUTPUT --dport 1,2,3,4... --quota 123412341234 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT --dport 1,2,3,4... -j DROP I think something like this would work to limit the traffic [and reset every month] but its only for traffic going out. Is there something I could do to combine -A OUTPUT and -A INPUT into one quota? Or, is there a different method I could use to achieve the same thing more efficiently? OS is debian squeeze Thanks.

• mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting (Kerberos authentication)

  There's plenty of references to this error on Goggle, and even a question here with the same title, but it seems that "access denied by server while mounting" is a catch-all error. I've tried suggestions that others have used to fix this problem, but they did not work in my case. I'm trying to set-up a Kerberos-based NFS file server with shared homes for a Linux network. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Servers and clients. When trying to mount a share using: mount 192.168.1.115:/export/home/ /media/tmp I get: mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.115:/export/home/ This is the same if I mount it from a client machine or from the server itself. • What might cause the Save and Open dialog windows to just not work?

  In several applications, the Save and Load dialog windows are just not showing. And in notepad (which obviously handles the return code) is reporting an out of memory issue, which I'm sure is not the case; I think it's assuming it's out of memory as it can't get the window handle. In any case, there's something definitely wrong with Windows, but there's nothing in the event log. Any idea why this might happen?

  I did a backup to a remote nfs folder with rsync, from a MAC to a Remote Debian. The final backup is 58GB less than the original. Rsync says that everything was OK, and nothing to update. • Word in office 2007 and Windows 7 ultimate cant navigate to folders

  In word 2007 I click office button top left I click open, I get the open box, in the top address bar, I if I click on the down arrow far right (previous Locations) the drop down menu is empty just a box with nothing in it. To go anywhere from here I have to navigate via the left had pane, on all other windows systems this dropdown has enabled me to go to any location on my computer. I'm wondering if because all my word documents are on my D drive that windows 7 doesn't like it.

• Reporting memory usage per process/program

  How can I get the current memory usage (preferably in bytes so they can be added up accurately) for all running processes individually? Can I roll up the summaries for child processes into the process that spawned them? (e.g all apache threads together). Sometimes, my server runs out of memory and becomes unresponsive. I want to discover what is using up all the memory. Unfortunately, it's likely to not be a single process. Some programs spawn hundreds of processes, each using very little memory, but it adds up. On a side note, is it normal for apache to spawn 200+ processes?

• What are my X client options for MS Windows?

  I need to connect to a headless X Windows server (running on Ubuntu) from my MS Windows 7 computer over a 100 Mbit network. I could use VNC (or any other remote viewer) but the 3D graphics performance would be lousy I imagine. I used to have it hooked up to a monitor, but that's broken now and I can't afford a new one. A friend advised that I could try and use an X client, and that the 3D graphics wont suffer too much over 100 Mbit. Cygwin seems to be an option, but I was wondering if there were any more lightweight options.

• Restoring files from blueprint on command

  I am setting up a server. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. I cannot modify what happens when the server shuts down entirely what I can do is run a command before the server runs the final shutdown save

• Windows service fails to start with local user until password is entered again in logon tab

  Basically we have a service where we use a local account as its logon. it has all the proper permissions, and everything is working fine, service starts and runs and all is good. Then one day, after rebooting, the service fails to start. Logs show incorrect password. Our technicians resolve the issue by simply retyping the password into the "Log On" tab from the services.msc. Unfortunately we have not been able to root cause. I suspect that the password that is stored for the service is lost somehow. Does anyone know where the password hash might be stored so we can check it? The only activities that seem to be possibly related are patching with Microsoft security patches, but we have multiple servers running the same service, and we have never seen more than one at a time, and its usually a different one each time when this occurrs.   I have seen many articles about tweaking an SSD, but many of them seem outdated, or too broad (read all Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 general tweaks). And I know that Windows 7 has been specifically tweaked for SSD by the Windows team, so I don't want to do something that was written for Windows XP in mind and end up circumventing something the Windows team has specifically designed in to Windows 7. So my question is what are the best SSD tweaks for Windows 7 that you have found to get the performance out of your drive? I hope to make a comprehensive list in the answers below so there won't be so much disinformation in the forums about what to do and what not to do. Here are a few that I see posted up on the forums alot, and some questions to get the discussion started: Disabling Superfetch. Yes or No Disabling Page File or limiting it to a really small size such as 500 MB. Disabling Indexing. Yes or No Disabling Defragmenting. Yes or No What are your thoughts do you have any that have worked for you? When providing an answer please do your best to back it up with a reason and possibly some documentation from MSDN, TechNet, or another credible source.

• Google Chrome doesn't stay logged in to Google sites when using pinned tabs

  Despite checking "stay logged in" or the like on Gmail or Docs, Chrome refuses to do so when I close and re-open it with Google sites pinned. If they're not pinned, it works fine. The "Clear cookies and other site and plug-in data when I close my browser" checkbox in the settings is not checked, and I don't have any cookie exceptions. All settings are defaults. Nor is the incognito mode being used. This occurs on all my computers using Chrome. I have deleted my cookies file (%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cookies) with no effect (other than losing the logins that ordinarly work fine). Of note is that when I relaunch Chrome with Gmail pinned and it asks me to log in, doing so once will fail (does nothing; no errors), then it will work on the second attempt. If I refresh the window before doing so, it will work on the first attempt.
