• Viability of Apache (MPM Worker), FastCGI PHP 4/5.2/5.3, and MySQL 5

  My server will be hosting numerous PHP web applications ranging from Joomla, Drupal, and some legacy (read: PHP4) and other custom-built code inherited from clients. This will be a development machine used by a dozen or so web developers and issues like fluctuating loads or particularly high load expectations are not important. Now, my question: are there any concerns I should know about when using Apache w/ MPM Worker, PHP 4/PHP 5.2/PHP 5.3 (all via FastCGI), and MySQL 5 (with a query cache of 64MB)? I have not tested the various applications extensively and I have only recently learned how to install PHP and utilize it via FastCGI (rather than mod_php, which in this case seemed impossible (considering the multiple versions of PHP and the desire to use MPM Worker over MPM Prefork)). I have come to understand that there could be concerns regarding XCache and APC, namely non-thread-safety issues where data becomes corrupted and the capability to use MPM Worker becomes null and void. Is this a valid concern? I have been using my personal testing server (running Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 in VirtualBox) which has 2GB of RAM available to it. • nested include in php

  The directory structure: C:/wamp/www/application/model/data_access/data_object.php C:/wamp/www/application/model/users/user.class.php C:/wamp/www/application/controller/projects.php C:/wamp/www/application/controller/links/links.php I have 2 php files data_object.php and user.class.php Now user.class.php has an include statement for data_object.php wchih is relative to user.class.php.These two files are under different directory hierarchy. Now I have to include this user.class.php in various files (like projects.php, links.php-which themselves are under different hierarchy) whenever i want to create a User() object. The problem is the relative path for file inclusion of data_object.php does work for say projects.php but if i open links.php the error message says it could not open file data_object.php in user.class.php. What i think is for relative inclusion of data_object.php it is considering the path of the file in which user.class.php is included. I am facing such problems in more than one scenarios I have to keep my directory structure the way it is but have to find a way to work with nested includes. I used Document root of session it give root path as C:/wamp/www/ i appended the path for data_object.php include but this is not working. (note: the forward slash is present after www) I am currently running on wamp server's localhost but after completion i have to host the solution on a domain. Pls help

• CPU spikes on small site- possibly apache or php config related

  Hello, I hope you can help me. I have a site that I'm moving to a new datacenter. The server is pretty much vanilla, no control panel, and also no optimizations. When I hit a page, the site takes an extremely long time to load, despite it being relatively light weight. I ran top to see what was happening, and the cpu jumps to 75%, and drops back down to about 20% while the rest of the page is loading. Someone suggested that I ran lsof -p on the offending processes, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I ran through my httpd.conf file and commented out a bunch of loaded modules that didn't seem necessary, but that didn't help either. Anyone have any ideas?   I'm fairly new with PHP and I am messing around with a login/registration system. I setup my sample website using a PHP-SWITCH script I found a while back: <?php switch($_GET['id']) { default: include('home.php'); /* LOGIN PAGES */ break; case "register_form": include ('includes/user_system/register_form.php'); } ? On the registration page the form links to my "register.php" which checks the validity of the form and to check for any blank fields and so on. "register.php" is supposed to refresh the page and add a reason to what the user did wrong when submitting the form. On my "register_form.php" page, which holds the actual form. This field is hidden until the user makes a mistake. <?php if (isset($reg_error)) { ?> , please try again. My "register.php" checks the form for all the errors. Here's the bit of code that will refresh the page with the reason for the error: // Check if any of the fields are missing if (empty($_POST['username']) || empty($_POST['password']) || empty($_POST['confirmpass'])) { // Reshow the form with an error $reg_error = 'One or more fields missing'; include 'register_form.php'; Now after I submit the form without any fields filled out I get the error code, but it refreshes to the actual "register_form.php". The problem with this is that because of my PHP-SWITCH script (helps me manage the site a lot easier) I don't have any formatting on that page. The actual URL to my "register_form.php" would be: "index.php?id=register_form.php". Now I have tried several different things such as changing it to: include 'index.php?id=register_form.php' And also changing it to: header(location:index.php?id=register_form.php') Unfortunately all this does is refresh the page without the reason for the error. I know this can be easily solved by just adding a Javascript Validator but I'd like to know if it is possible to refresh the page with the error using either "include" or "header()" while having a PHP-SWITCH script on the website.

• How do I know which include path will be used in PHP?

  When I run phpinfo() and look by the Configuration category under PHP Core, I see a directive titled include_path, with a local value and a master value. In this case, my local value is set to .: ./include: ../include: /usr/share/php: /usr/share/php/smarty: /usr/share/pear and my master value is set to .: /usr/share/php: /usr/share/pear: /usr/share/php/pear: /usr/share/php/smarty The reason I am trying to learn how this works is because there is a file in the system I am working on titled Smarty.class.php, which I'm sure sounds very familiar to anyone who uses Smarty Templating Engine. One of the PHP files has the following includes: require_once("Smarty.class.php"); require_once("user_info_class.inc"); The file user_info_class.inc is in the same directory as the file making the include, which makes perfect sense to me, and is the way that I've always referenced files. I decided that I wanted to open up the Smarty.class.php file and had assumed it would be in the same directory, but it was not. After doing a bit of digging, I discovered those php_ini variables, and was finally able to locate the file in the directory usr/share/php/smarty/. So it would seem that when making an include, it follows some sort of order between the Local and Master values for the include_path. Assuming that my deductions were correct thus far, can someone explain the order in which PHP searches for the files to be included?

• Centos + CPanel results in php always running as fgci, instead of cli, as expected

  I'm having problems with a server configured by someone else. It uses CPanel, and it has Apache+PHP. For some reason, when running php -v as a user, i get "cli" as handler # php -v | head -n 1 PHP 5.3.27 (cli) (built: Oct 15 2013 16:06:48) If a make a PHP script with echo shell_exec("php -v | tail -n 1"), i get PHP 5.3.27 (cgi-fcgi) (built: Oct 15 2013 16:22:16) Why the cli/fcgi difference? I need to fix this so that scripts ran by the apache user would be running as "cli", not "fcgi". • Creating a GTK theme, but Qt and Java apps are not affected, and title bar button layout is ugly

  I'm playing with a gtk2 / gtk3 theme which I use in the Mate desktop. Everything is looking well, even gtk3 apps, but I still have 3 important issues: Java apps ignore the theme QT apps ignore the theme I'm using those nice ubuntu 10 title bar buttons, but the problem is, when only the close button appears, the title bar looks ugly. Can I make it so that it shows the two other buttons, but disabled? I don't know how Ubuntu 10 handled this. Here's a screenshot showing the 3 problems (above is a small java app, below is a Qt app): Under my previous desktop environments, Unity and Cinnamon, both apps seemed to be taking the right theme correctly, but I did not use my custom theme yet. Cinnamon is based on gnome-shell by the way, and mate is a gnome2-fork. Please note that the shown java app explicitely tries to load the gtk theme at runtime. By default, java apps don't, but this one has the necessary code, which worked in unity and cinnamon. Any suggestions how I could make my theme better so these problems disappear? Down the road, I want to use MVC framework so that I help myself be disciplined in the way I build. However, I know basic knowledge of PHP and OOP PHP are required. So my question is this: what are the right steps to mastering Cake PHP? I don't want to skip critical phases of learning before learning to Cake PHP. At the same time, I don't want to spend more time than required learning PHP if I can learn it directly through Cake PHP knowledge. Any advice would be appreciated.

  I want to use expose-event to draw something then update or redraw. That's to say, there are a drawing area and a button in window. When clicking button, the drawing area will be redrawn accordingly. My problems are Following code worked but it only had a drawing area no button. If I add the button(cancel the comment for button), nothing is drawn. What's the reason? • Apache 2.4 PHP 5.4 mysql not found?

  Just tried setting up the latest Apache (2.4.1 x86 VC10 from apachelounge) and PHP (5.4 VC9 TS X86, with the php5apache2_4.dll) on my PC and ran into this weird problem; in my php.ini I have enabled all of the following: extension=php_mysql.dll extension=php_mysqli.dll extension=php_pdo_mysql.dll but when I try to print the available PDO's using this: print_r(PDO::getAvailableDrivers()); It gives me an empty array. PhpMyAdmin and MantisBT also refuse to work, saying that the mysql extension is missing. phpinfo() gives this: PDO PDO support enabled PDO drivers no value and when searching for mysql, only the mysqlnd section pops up... The DLLs are there in the D:/php/ext folder and no errors pop up when starting up Apache, as well as no errors in the Windows Event Log, and PHP itself has no error log anyway. What could possibly be the problem with this? Before this I had Apache 2.2.22 from apachelounge and PHP 5.3.9 and I had no problems. Now nothing works...

• Authenticating GTK app to run with root permissions

  I have a UI app (uses GTK) for Linux that requires to be run as root (it reads and writes /dev/disk*). Instead of requiring the user to open a root shell or use "sudo" manually every time when he launches my app, I wonder if the app can use some OS-provided API to ask the user to relaunch the app with root permissions. (Note: gtk app's can't use "setuid" mode, so that's not an option here.) The advantage here would be an easier workflow: The user could, from his default user account, double click my app from the desktop, and the app then would relaunch itself with root permission after been authenticated by the API/OS. I ask this because OS X offers exactly this: An app can ask the OS to launch an executable with root permissions - the OS (and not the app) then asks the user to input his credentials, verifies them and then launches the target as desired. I wonder if there's something similar for Linux (Ubuntu, e.g.) Update: The app is a remote operated disk repair tool for the unsavvy Linux user, and those Linux noobs won't have much understanding of using sudo or even changing their user's group memberships, especially if their disk just started acting up and they're freaking out. That's why I seek a solution that avoids technicalities like this.

I've tried this way to install lamp on ubuntu sudo apt-get install lamp-server^ phpmyadmin and I've done all of the configuration correctly after installation I've added this line Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to /etc/apache2/apache2.conf then I restarted apache2 but in phpmyadmin on the bottom of the page is this error : The mcrypt extension is missing. Please check your PHP configuration I've check and mcrypt was in it , but in phpmyadmin it gives me error of missing . the other problem is on PHP pages it seems like there is no PHP and it's all html because lots of PHP lines are printed in textbox's like : <? echo $row['details']; ?> can anybody tell me what should I do ?

The length of time it took me to find it makes me suspicious of its quality. 3 related questions: do professional PHP coders read/care about php|architect? is it a good source for PHP beginners? assuming yes to either of the above, how far back in the archives to articles remain relevant? (ex: does stuff written about PHP4 still matter?)

• Impact of changing from PHP to Java after 1 year or 6 months

  I'm MCA final year student and I have very poor school record and had 2 years of gap. I'm first class with distinction in graduation and in post graduation is first class.Companies are coming for campus recruitment.I have very less companies like 4 or 5 who don't impose any criteria. there is a company who work on PHP and i have cleared its aptitude test and technical only HR remaining. I'm actually interested in Java and have knowledge about it but company work on PHP.I was fretting about If i work on PHP for 6 or 1 year can I change later to Java ? because i will also have experience of 6 or 12 months ? Will be considered an experienced employee if I apply for java developer later ? Will manager think that I worked in PHP and not allowed for Java ? Will I have to pursue java OCJP certification so i can get job even after 1 year experience of PHP ? Only 8 days are remaining for Hr round so please need help

  A dozen of bad tutorials out there that teach you bad habits especially when we speak about PHP. I want to learn how to avoid the things that can lead me to develop inefficient web applications. I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! It would be very helpful for me if you can tell me about your story in learning PHP, what are things that I should avoid? How to learn about PHP security from the beginning to avoid unlearn something later on?.
