  • Building a small server farm

    - by RayQuang
Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. Thanks in advance, RayQuang UPDATE: sorry I forgot to mention it, the platform that I will be using is PHP with the APC code cache, Probably running Debian.

  • Heroku and Github integration (how to structure the project)

    - by Noah
I'm creating a webservice and I want to store the source on github and run the app on heroku. I haven't seen my exact scenario addressed anywhere on the 'net so far, so I'll ask it here: I want to have the following directory structure: /project .git README <-- project readme file TODO.otl <-- project outline ... <-- other project-related stuff /my_rails_app app config ... README <-- rails' readme file In the above, project corresponds to http://github.com/myuser/project, and my_rails_app is the code that should be pushed to heroku. Do I need a separate branch for the rails app, or is there a simpler way that I'm missing? I guess my project-related non-rails files could live in my_rails_app, but the rails README already lives there and it seems inconsistent to overwrite that. However, if I leave it, my github page for the rails app will contain the rails readme, which makes no sense. Thanks, Noah P.S. I tried just setting it up as described above and running git push heroku from the main project folder. Of course, heroku doesn't know I want to deploy the subfolder: -----> Heroku receiving push ! Heroku push rejected, no Rails or Rack app detected.

  • Error in requiring Sinatra gem

    - by Dan
I'm having a hard time getting Sinatra running on my local setup, Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. The error getting thrown when I have require 'sinatra' is: NoMethodError: undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:891:in `compile' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:883:in `gsub' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:883:in `compile' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:856:in `route' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:838:in `get' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:1077 from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:929:in `configure' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra/base.rb:1076 from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sinatra-1.0/lib/sinatra.rb:4 from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `gem_original_require' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from (irb):2 from :0 I've tried: Uninstalling/reinstalling Sinatra Updating all gems Ensuring all dependencies exist (rack) Any ideas? • Server http://www.myopenid.com/server responds that the 'check_authentication' call is not valid

    - by viatropos
I've been struggling with this for a few days now, haven't pinpointed the problem. I am trying to get OpenID to work in Rails 2.3 and Rails 3, using ruby-openid rack-openid open_id_authentication I am logging in using my viatropos.myopenid.com account, but it consistently returns this error: Server http://www.myopenid.com/server responds that the 'check_authentication' call is not valid What could that be from, it's not a very descriptive error... Does it have to do with something ruby-specific, or is this entirely on the OpenID protocol side of things? More specifically, I am using Authlogic and ActiveRecord, so could this be a problem with my User or UserSession models somehow? Or is it more to do with the header or request? In ruby response I'm getting (from puts inside ruby-openid) is: #<OpenID::Consumer::FailureResponse:0x25e282c @reference=nil, @endpoint=#<OpenID::OpenIDServiceEndpoint:0x2601984 @local_id="http://viatropos.myopenid.com/", @display_identifier=nil, @type_uris=["http://specs.openid.net/auth/2.0/signon", "http://openid.net/sreg/1.0", "http://openid.net/extensions/sreg/1.1", "http://schemas.openid.net/pape/policies/2007/06/phishing-resistant", "http://openid.net/srv/ax/1.0"], @used_yadis=true, @server_url="http://www.myopenid.com/server", @canonical_id=nil, @claimed_id="http://viatropos.myopenid.com/">, @message="Server http://www.myopenid.com/server responds that the 'check_authentication' call is not valid", @contact=nil> Any tips would be greatly appreciated. • How to setup prawn on heroku when installed as a git submodule

    - by brad
I have a rails app that I am trying to deploy to heroku. This app generates pdfs using prawn. I installed prawn as a git submodule rather than as a gem as this is what is recommended on the prawn website (here). This has not worked well with heroku so far though. As stated on heroku's application constraints page submodules are not supported so I followed their instructions to track the submodule in the main project and tried again. This has not worked and when I access my application I get the following error: App failed to start An error happened during the initialization of your app. This may be due to a typo, wrong number of arguments, or calling a function that doesn’t exists. Check the stack trace below for specific details. Make sure the app is working locally in production mode, by running it with RAILS_ENV (for Rails apps) or RACK_ENV (for Sinatra or other rack apps) set to production. e.g. RAILS_ENV=production script/server. Original Error /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require': /disk1/home/slugs/208590_03c9c22_67f5/mnt/app/controllers/invoices_controller.rb:37: syntax error, unexpected ')' (SyntaxError) ).to_pdf(@invoice) (and then a whole lot more that I'll spare you from) The .to_pdf function described in the last line is called in a controller in exactly the way described in the prawn how-to that I linked to above so my interpretation of the error message is that prawn is not being installed/detected. Does anyone know how I can address this? I'm new to heroku so have little idea how to approach this. Is the submodule approach for prawn dead in the water from the get-go? Do I need to install it as a gem instead. I'd rather keep it as a submodule just because that works for now and I don't want to break it.

  • Shared Server Dreamhost

    - by Jseb
I am trying to install an app on a shared server. If i understand properly because i am using a shared server, and that Dreamhost doesn't suppose rails 3.2.8 I must use FCGI, although i am not sure how to install and to make it run properly. From this tutorial http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Rails_3. To my understand here what I did, In dreamhost, activate PHP 5.x.x FastCGI and made sure Phusion Passenger is unchecked Create an app on my localmachine Because rails doesn't create a dispatch and access file i create the two following file in my /public folder dispatch.fcgi #!/home/username/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p327/bin/ruby ENV['RAILS_ENV'] ||= 'production' ENV['HOME'] ||= `echo ~`.strip ENV['GEM_HOME'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327') ENV['GEM_PATH'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327') + ":" + File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327@global') require 'fcgi' require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), '../config/environment') class Rack::PathInfoRewriter def initialize(app) @app = app end def call(env) env.delete('SCRIPT_NAME') parts = env['REQUEST_URI'].split('?') env['PATH_INFO'] = parts[0] env['QUERY_STRING'] = parts[1].to_s @app.call(env) end end Then created the file .htaccess <IfModule mod_fastcgi.c> AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi </IfModule> <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi </IfModule> Options +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi/$1 [QSA,L] ErrorDocument 500 "Rails application failed to start properly" Uploaded to a folder and pointed to the public folder in dreamhost Made sure dispatch.fcgi has 777 for write ssh and run the following command in the public folder : ./dispatch.fcgi Crossing my finger but it doesn't work I get the following errors ./dispatch.fcgi: line 1: ENV[RAILS_ENV]: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 1: =: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 2: ENV[HOME]: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 2: =: command not found ./dispatch.fcgi: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token (' ./dispatch.fcgi: line 3:ENV['GEM_HOME'] = File.expand_path('~/.rvm/gems/ruby 1.9.3-p327')' Doing wrong??? • Changing classes on multiple divs when selecting specific radio buttons

    - by Rob
    Hey everyone I got a javascript problem I can't seem to find a specific solution for on the web. What I want to be able to do is select one of the radio buttons and have that change the class of #home-right to either .rackmount or .shipping and add the class of .displaynone to the type of dimensions I don't want shown. <div id="home-right" class="rackmount"> <h4 class="helvneuebcn">Case Finder</h4> <div class="cta-options"> <input type="radio" value="Shipping and Storage" name="" checked> Shipping and Storage<br/> <input type="radio" value="Rackmount Enclosures" name=""> Rackmount Enclosures<br/> </div> <div class="shipping-dimensions displaynone"> <div class="dimensions"><input type="text" class="size"><span class="helvneuemd">H x </span></div> <div class="dimensions"><input type="text" class="size"><span class="helvneuemd">W x </span></div> <div class="dimensions"><input type="text" class="size"><span class="helvneuemd">L</span></div> </div> <div class="rackmount-dimensions"> <div class="dimensions"><input type="text" class="size"><span class="helvneuemd">U Height x </span></div> <div class="dimensions"><input type="text" class="size"><span class="helvneuemd">Rack Depth</span></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> <input type="button" value="Submit" class="findcase"> </div>

  • Iterating Over Params Hash

    - by Joe Clark
    I'm having an extremely frustrating time getting some images to upload. They are obviously being uploaded as rack/multipart but the way that I'm iterating over my params hash must be causing the problem. I could REALLY use some help, so I can stop pulling out my hair. So I've got a params hash that looks like this: Parameters: {"commit"=>"Submit", "sighting_report"=>[{"number_seen"=>"1", "picture"=>#<File:/var/folders/IX/IXXrbzpCHkq68OuyY-yoI++++TI/-Tmp-/RackMultipart.85991.5>, "species_id"=>"2"}], "authenticity_token"=>"u0eN5MAfvGWtfEzrqBt4qfrL54VJ9SGX0jFLZCJ8iRM=", "sighting"=>{"sighting_date(2i)"=>"6", "name"=>"", "sighting_date(3i)"=>"5", "county"=>"0", "notes"=>"", "location"=>"", "sighting_date(1i)"=>"2010", "email"=>""}} My form can have multiple sighting reports with multiple pictures in each sighting report. Here's my controller code: def create_multiple @report = Report.new @report.name = params[:sighting]["name"] @report.sighting_date = Date.civil(params[:sighting][:"sighting_date(1i)"].to_i, params[:sighting][:"sighting_date(2i)"].to_i, params[:sighting][:"sighting_date(3i)"].to_i) @report.county_id = params[:sighting][:county] @report.location = params[:sighting][:location] @report.notes = params[:sighting][:notes] @report.email = params[:sighting][:email] @report.save! @report.reload for sr in params[:sighting_report] do sighting = SightingReport.new sighting.report_id = @report.id sighting.species_id = sr[:species_id] sighting.number_seen = sr[:number_seen] sighting.save if sr[:picture] sighting.reload for pic in sr[:picture] do p = SpeciesPic.new p.uploaded_picture = pic p.species_id = sighting.species_id p.report_id = @report.id p.save! end end end redirect_to :action => 'new_multiple' end

  • how to use git rebase to clean up a convoluted history

    - by lsiden
After working for several weeks with a half dozen different branches and merges, on both my laptop and work and my desktop at home, my history has gotten a bit convoluted. For example, I just did a fetch, then merged master with origin/master. Now, when I do git show-branches, the output looks like this: ! [login] Changed domain name. ! [master] Merge remote branch 'origin/master' ! [migrate-1.9] Migrating to 1.9.1 on Heroku ! [rebase-master] Merge remote branch 'origin/master' ---- - - [master] Merge remote branch 'origin/master' + + [master^2] A bit of re-arranging and cleanup. - - [master^2^] Merge branch 'rpx-login' + + [master^2^^2] Commented out some debug logging. + + [master^2^^2^] Monkey-patched Rack::Request#ip + + [master^2^^2~2] dump each request to log .... I would like to clean this up with a git rebase. I created a new branch, rebase-master, for this purpose, and on this branch tried git rebase <common-ancestor>. However, I have to resolve many conflicts, and the end result on branch rebase-master no longer matches the corresponding version on master, which has already been tested and works! I thought I saw a solution to this somewhere but can't find it anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Or will these convoluted ref names go away when I start deleting un-needed branches that I have already merged with? I am the sole developer on this project, so there is no one else who will be affected.

  • Full complete MySQL database replication? Ideas? What do people do?

    - by mauriciopastrana
Currently I have two Linux servers running MySQL, one sitting on a rack right next to me under a 10 Mbit/s upload pipe (main server) and another some couple of miles away on a 3 Mbit/s upload pipe (mirror). I want to be able to replicate data on both servers continuously, but have run into several roadblocks. One of them being, under MySQL master/slave configurations, every now and then, some statements drop (!), meaning; some people logging on to the mirror URL don't see data that I know is on the main server and vice versa. Let's say this happens on a meaningful block of data once every month, so I can live with it and assume it's a "lost packet" issue (i.e., god knows, but we'll compensate). The other most important (and annoying) recurring issue is that, when for some reason we do a major upload or update (or reboot) on one end and have to sever the link, then LOAD DATA FROM MASTER doesn't work and I have to manually dump on one end and upload on the other, quite a task nowadays moving some .5 TB worth of data. Is there software for this? I know MySQL (the "corporation") offers this as a VERY expensive service (full database replication). I am just wondering what people out there do. The way it's structured, we run an automatic failover where if one server is not up, then the main URL just resolves to the other server.

  • Using Cucumber With Modular Sinatra Apps

    - by Rob Conery
I'm building out a medium-sized application using Sinatra and all was well when I had a single app.rb file and I followed Aslak's guidance up on Github: http://wiki.github.com/aslakhellesoy/cucumber/sinatra As the app grew a bit larger and the app.rb file started to bulge, I refactored out a lot of of the bits into "middleware" style modules using Sinatra::Base, mapping things using a rack-up file (config.ru) etc. The app works nicely - but my specs blew up as there was no more app.rb file for webrat to run against (as defined in the link above). I've tried to find examples on how to work this - and I think I'm just not used to the internal guts of Cuke just yet as I can't find a single way to have it cover all the apps. I tried just pointing to "config.ru" instead of app.rb - but that doesn't work. What I ended up doing - which is completely hackish - is to have a separate app.rb file in my support directory, which has all the requires stuff so I can at least test the model stuff. I can also specify routes in there - but that's not at all what I want to do. So - the question is: how can I get Cucumber to properly work with the modular app approach?

  • Ruby On Rails with HTML5 offline apps - Firefox does not cache the application.manifest but Safari does

    - by hoitomt
I'm working off of this Railscast tutorial: episode 247 I’m up to this point in the tutorial: added the rack-offline gem, added the application.manifest route, and added a reference to the manifest in the html tag. Right before it starts talking about problems with caching. Safari works as intended – When the server is running the page is served. From the server logs I can see that Safari is making a single request to the server every time for the items page. When I turn off the server the page displays as well, even after shutting down the browser and restarting. It appears to be pulling from the application.manifest (cache manifest). Firefox does not work as intended – When accessing the page for the first time, Firefox lets me know that the web page wants to store something locally, I allow. After clicking on allow, Firefox makes 5 requests to the server for the page (from the server log). The hash is different in every request. Is it is possible that the changing hash is triggering Firefox to keep trying to get the new manifest until it reaches some maximum (5 attempts)? Then, after the server is stopped, Firefox will not show the page at all. It looks like it isn’t caching the application.manifest. Firefox also gives you a way to see what sites are storing stuff locally by going to Tools/Options/Advanced/Network (Firefox/Preferences/Advanced/Network on Apple). I see localhost there but the size is 0 bytes. So for some reason, Firefox is not downloading my application.manifest along with the files

  • Replace occurance of character with all letters in the alphabet

    - by McAvoy
    I have created a scrabble game with a computer opponent. If a blank tile is found in the computer's rack during the word generation if needs to be swapped out for every letter in the alphabet. I have my current solution to solve this problem below, but was wondering if there is a better more efficient way to accomplish this task. if (str.Contains("*")) { char c = 'A'; String made = ""; while(c < 'Z') { made = str.ReplaceFirst("*", c.ToString()); if (!made.Contains("*")) { wordsMade.Add(made); if (theGame.theTrie.Search(made) == Trie.SearchResults.Found) { validWords.Add(made); } } else { char ch = 'A'; String made2 = ""; while (ch < 'Z') { made2 = made.ReplaceFirst("*", c.ToString()); wordsMade.Add(made2); if (theGame.theTrie.Search(made2) == Trie.SearchResults.Found) { validWords.Add(made2); } ch++; } } c++; }

  • Xsigo and Oracle's Storage

    - by Philippe Deverchère
Xsigo, a virtual network infrastructure provider, has recently been acquired by Oracle. Following this acquisition, one might ask ourselves why it is important to Oracle and how Oracle's storage is going to benefit on the long term from this virtualized infrastructure layer. Well, the first thing to understand is that Virtual Networking addresses both network and storage connectivity. Oracle Virtual Networking, as the Xsigo technology is now called, connects any server to any network and storage, so this is not just about connecting servers to the Internet or Intranet. It is also for a large part connecting servers to NAS and SAN storage. Connecting servers to storage has become increasingly complex in the past few years because of the strong emergence of virtualization at the Operating System level. 50% of enterprise workloads are now virtualized, up from 18% in 2009, resulting in a strong consolidation of various applications in a high density server footprint. At the same time, server I/O capability increased 8x in the last 8 years. All this has pushed IT administrators to multiply the number of I/O connections in the back-end of their physical servers, resulting in a messy and very hard to manage networking infrastructure. Here is a typical view of a rack back-end when no virtual networking is used. We consider that today: - 75% of users have ten or more Ethernet ports per server - 85% of users have two or more SAN ports per server - 58% have had to add connectivity to a server specifically for VMs - 65% consider cable reduction a priority The average is 12 or more ports per server, resulting in an extremely complex infrastructure to manage. What Oracle wants to achieve with its Oracle Virtual Networking offering is pretty simple. The objective is to eliminate the complexity through a dramatic reduction of cabling between servers and storage/networks. It is also to provide a software based management system so that any server can be connected to any network or any storage, on demand, and without physical intervention on the infrastructure. At the end of the day, the picture on the left shows what one wants to get for the back-end of customer's racks: just a couple of connections on each physical server to provide a simple, agile and fast network infrastructure for both storage and networking access. This is exactly what the Oracle Virtual Networking solution does. It transforms a complex, error-prone, difficult to manage and expensive networking infrastructure into a simple, high performance and agile solution for the data center. Practically speaking, and for the sake of simplicity, imagine that each server just hosts a minimal number of physical InfiniBand HCAs (Host Channel Adapter) with two links (for redundancy) onto the Oracle Fabric Interconnect director. Using the Oracle Fabric Manager software, you'll then be able to create virtual NICs and HBAs (called vNIC and vHBA) that will be seen by the servers as standard NICs and HBAs and associate them to networks and storage systems which are physically connected to the back-end of the director through standard Fibre Channel and Ethernet GbE/10GbE ports. In addition to this incredibly simple "at-a-click" connectivity capability, the Oracle Virtual Networking solution offers powerful features such as network isolation, Quality of Service, advanced performance monitoring and non-disruptive reconfiguration, migration and scalability of networking infrastructure. So let's go back now to our initial question: why is Oracle Virtual Networking especially important to Oracle's storage solutions? After all, one could connect any storage in the back-end of the Oracle Fabric Interconnect directors, right? The answer is pretty simple: since Oracle owns both the virtualized networking infrastructure and the storage (ZFS-SA, Pillar Axiom and tape), it is possible to imagine several ways in the future to add value when it comes to connect storage to a virtualized storage network: enhanced storage capabilities, converged management between storage and network, improved diagnostic capabilities and optimized integration resulting in higher performance and unique features/functions. Of course, all this is not going to be done overnight, and future will tell us is which evolutions come first. But there is little doubt that the integration of Xsigo within Oracle is going to create opportunities for Oracle's storage!

  • Exadata X3, 11.2.3.2 and Oracle Platinum Services

    - by Rene Kundersma
Oracle recently announced an Exadata Hardware Update. The overall architecture will remain the same, however some interesting hardware refreshes are done especially for the storage server (X3-2L). Each cell will now have 1600GB of flash, this means an X3-2 full rack will have 20.3 TB of total flash ! For all the details I would like to refer to the Oracle Exadata product page: www.oracle.com/exadata Together with the announcement of the X3 generation. A new Exadata release, 11.2.3.2 is made available. New Exadata systems will be shipped with this release and existing installations can be updated to that release. As always there is a storage cell patch and a patch for the compute node, which again needs to be applied using YUM. Instructions and requirements for patching existing Exadata compute nodes to 11.2.3.2 using YUM can be found in the patch README. Depending on the release you have installed on your compute nodes the README will direct you to a particular section in MOS note 1473002.1. MOS 1473002.1 should only be followed with the instructions from the 11.2.3.2 patch README. Like with 11.2.3.1.0 and 11.2.3.1.1 instructions are added to prepare your systems to use YUM for the first time in case you are still on release 11.2.2.4.2 and earlier. You will also find these One Time Setup instructions in MOS note 1473002.1 By default compute nodes that will be updated to 11.2.3.2.0 will have the UEK kernel. Before 11.2.3.2.0 the 'compatible kernel' was used for the compute nodes. For 11.2.3.2.0 customer will have the choice to replace the UEK kernel with the Exadata standard 'compatible kernel' which is also in the ULN 11.2.3.2 channel. Recommended is to use the kernel that is installed by default. One of the other great new things 11.2.3.2 brings is Writeback Flashcache (wbfc). By default wbfc is disabled after the upgrade to 11.2.3.2. Enable wbfc after patching on the storage servers of your test environment and see the improvements this brings for your applications. Writeback FlashCache can be enabled  by dropping the existing FlashCache, stopping the cellsrv process and changing the FlashCacheMode attribute of the cell. Of course stopping cellsrv can only be done in a controlled manner. Steps: drop flashcache alter cell shutdown services cellsrv again, cellsrv can only be stopped in a controlled manner alter cell flashCacheMode = WriteBack alter cell startup services cellsrv create flashcache all Going back to WriteThrough FlashCache is also possible, but only after flushing the FlashCache: alter cell flashcache all flush Last item I like to highlight in particular is already from a while ago, but a great thing to emphasis: Oracle Platinum Services. On top of the remote fault monitoring with faster response times Oracle has included update and patch deployment services. These services are delivered by Oracle Advanced Customer Support at no additional costs for qualified Oracle Premier Support customers. • Why won't ruby recognize Haml under ubuntu64 while using jekyll static blog generator?

    - by oldmanjoyce
I have been trying, quite unsuccessfully, to run henrik's fork of the jekyll static blog generator on Ubuntu 64-bit. I just can't seem to figure this out and I've tried a bunch of different things. Originally I posted this over at stackoverflow, but this is probably the better spot for it. • IRP_MJ_WRITE latency up to 15 seconds

    - by racitup
We have written an application that performs small (22kB) writes to multiple files at once (one thread performing asynchronous queued writes to multiple locations on behalf of other threads) on the same local volume (RAID1). 99.9% of the writes are low-latency but occasionally (maybe every minute or two) we get one or two huge latency writes (I have seen 10 seconds and above) without any real explanation. Platform: Win2003 Server with NTFS. Monitoring: Sysinternals Process Monitor (see link below) and our own application logging. We have tried multiple things to try and solve this that have been gleaned from a few websites, e.g.: Making the first part of file names unique to aid 8.3 name generation Writing files to multiple directories Changing Intel Disk Write Caching Windows File/Printer Sharing Minimize memory used Balance Maximize data throughput for file sharing Maximize data throughput for network applications System-Advanced-Performance-Advanced NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate - use fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1 disable 8.3 name generation - use "fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1" + restart Enable a large size file system cache Disable paging of the kernel code IO Page Lock Limit Turn Off (or On) the Indexing Service But nothing seems to make much difference. There's a whole host of things we haven't tried yet but we wondered if anyone had come across the same problem, a reason and a solution (programmatic or not)? We can reproduce the problem using IOMeter and a simple setup: Start IOMeter and remove all but the first worker thread in 'Topology' using the disconnect button. Select the Worker thread and put a cross in the box next to the disk you want to use in the Disk Targets tab and put '2000000' in Maximum Disk Size (NOTE: must have at least 1GB free space; sector size is 512 bytes) Next create a new access specification and add it to the worker thread: Transfer Request Size = 22kB 100% Sequential Percent of Access Spec = 100% Percent Read/Write = 100% Write Change Results Display Update Frequency to 5 seconds, Test Setup Run Time to 20 seconds and both 'Number of Workers to Spawn Automatically' settings to zero. Select the Worker Thread in the Topology panel and hit the Duplicate Worker button 59 times to create 60 threads with identical settings. Hit the 'Go' button (green flag) and monitor the Results tab. The 'Maximum I/O Response Time (ms)' always hits at least 3500 on our machine. Our machine isn't exactly slow (Xeon 8 core rack server with 4GB and onboard RAID). I'd be interested to see what other people get. We have a feeling it might be something to do with the NTFS filesystem (ours is currently 75% full of fragmented files) and we are going to try a few things around this principle. But it is also related to disk performance since we don't see it on a RAMDisk and it's not as severe on a RAID10 array. Any help is much appreciated. Richard Right-click and select 'Open Link in New Tab': ProcMon Result
