• Create a folder shortcut in "My Computer"

  I'm trying to add shortcuts to folders in "My Computer". This .reg almost works, I can execute programs like EXPLORE.exe, but I want to open a folder in the same window. Can someone please point out how? • Remove Shell Extension Folder X64

  I have a very strange shell extension folder which I just can't get rid of. How can I get rid of this? I already downloaded ShellExViewer, but I cannot find any extension called "X64", nor are the other extensions which reside in that folder anywhere in the Viewer. I am also not able to find that folder in the registry, but that's probably because I don't know where to look. How can I edit this so the contents of the folder are put in the "default" menu and not in a subfolder?

  I need to make a change on all computers in our domain. Specifically I need to make a change to the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings. Our users have Outlook 2010 installed. These setting can be mannually accessed from: Control Panel - Mail - E-mail Accounts - (Select Account) - Change Account - More Settings - Connection Tab - Exchange Proxy Settings I need to have both the "On fast networks" and "On slow networks" check boxes selected. Obviously the idea of asking my users to go through the process above to make these changes is not ideal. Therefore I looking for advice on how I can automatically push these setting to my user base. I have seached the registry but I have been unable to find the location that this setting is saved. Thanks for any help!

"These machines are now on Domain where in we have no rights/control on the domain level GPO", we have local admi rights on these machines We have a requirement do set the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" to "NOT Configured" or "OFF "on these machines In gpedit.msc if we manually go to "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" after enabling Windows Firewall Services then can Clear the settings Do do the same manually on all machines is extra effort Changing values in registry will get reverted on machine restart as its getting applied from local GPO Also using GPMC can connect to remote computer and can manually or using wfw file we can make it not configured but we are looking for a script or a less effort method to accomplish this Please suggest NB: CIA has already reported similar issue//How do I turn off Windows 7 Firewall via script or through automation?// , but doing netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off on already deployed machines did not make change (FW service on all machine is disabled in GOLd image)// Thanks and Regards Jose

• Media Player Classic creating folder

  Whenever I open a file in Media Player Classic it creates a new folder "Media Player Classic" under the folder of the file I opened. Originally it was putting a playlist in that folder, "default.mpcpl", but I found that if you open the playlist (Ctrl+7) and right-click the playlist, there is an option "Remember items", unchecking that will prevent MPC from creating this playlist. I was hopeful that without the auto-generated playlist MPC would have no reason to create the folder. Wrong. Now the folder is empty, but I still have to follow MPC around deleting all these blank folders. I use Media Player Classic on several of my computers so I think I just screwed up some variable somewhere somehow regarding where it stores playlists or something, but I can't figure out what it is, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to little avail. Which makes me think it might be in the registry. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Remap Apple MacBook Eject key in Windows?

  I have a MacBook with Windows 7 on it as my daily driver. My MacBook has a nearly useless Eject key, but I wish it was a forward delete key. KeyRemap4Macboook works great in OS X. Is there any software that is equivalent in Windows? I have tried KeyTweaks and HotKeys and neither of them will recognize the Eject key. I looked it up and I think it is key 161. Is there any way to make the key into a more useful forward delete? Could I just go into the registry and do it that way?

• reg delete gives me "access is denied" but regedit delete is ok

  I need to delete a key from a command line. So I wanted to use reg delete "the key to be deleted" /f but I get ERROR: access is denied. From the same login session (the same user) I am able to delete the key without any troubles from regedit.exe that is not run as administrator. I cannot use runas command to execute reg that I believe would be to solution because in fact I want to use reg to delete registry entry for administrator profile so runas works again. Is there a way for me to copy/save/transfer my "start menu" configuration, meaning the grouping and ordering of the elements on the Start screen, between user profiles? Is it in the registry? I am open to manual or "coded" suggestions. UPDATE: I'd like to VETO this closing. I am aware of the "roaming" profile behavior. • Wifilink 5100 AGN mass update

  We are using a Meru enterprise wireless network with 180 APs. Recently, many users connections are dropping frequently. After much troubleshooting, we have determined much of the trouble is due to some settings in the advanced properties of the wireless nic on our notebooks. Now we want to send out the changes in a Zenworks bundle, but I cannot find these settings in the registry or anywhere we might be able to send out as a remote package. Does anyone know where to find these settings for an Intel wifilink 5100 card other that the NIC properties itself? We really do not want to manually configure 600 notebooks.

  This has been itching me for quite a long time. When I come on a new computer with any version of Windows, I need to: un-hide file extensions set explorer default view to list instead of icons set the file extensions like h c cpp so they don't open Visual C++ (which can take up to 20 seconds!) each time I double click on them, opening them with something like Notepad++ instead. Isn't there some program to quickly set thoses options to something I want, like some standalone exe, or some generic registry file I can execute when I come on a new machine? I'm a developer and I can't believe I'm wasting so much time on those &*$%@# things.

• How to change the Windows 7 taskbar icon spacing?

  At home i run Windows 7 with on a widescreen LCD with the taskbar to the left and this works well, but at work i just got upgraded to W7 on a 4:3 LCD and have the taskbar at the bottom. So what's with the taskbar icon spacing? Is there any way to change this? I.e. move them closer together? There's gotta be a registry setting or some fancy Tweak UI application that will reclaim some of that elbow room. That image above represents nearly half the width of my desktop. I know i know, white space is great and it gives it a light, whimsical look. Blah blah. Awesome, but can i get some real estate back please?

• Drag and drop to attachments feature only working intermittently in Outlook 2010

  I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem with my Outlook 2010 install where the ability to drag and drop an attachment into a new email will stop working from time to time. It seems to be fairly moonphase-y in that I can't seem to find a correlation in what causes it to stop working. Some searching online lead me to try running this command through the windows run dialogue: Regsvr32 ole32.dll, which apparently re-registers that particular dll as a command component in the registry. It didn't work, but I was curious as to why it was a suggested fix, and if there was something similar to try that would work, or another known solution.

  My in-laws bought an HP computer loaded with HP junk, and it's giving me a headache. When they insert a camera memory card into their printer, the Auto-Play dialog comes up, but it also launches the HP Photosmart Essential application, which is a piece of trash. It will NOT launch properly just normally from the taskbar, so that makes it pretty useless. I tried uninstalling it, but then when you insert a memory card, a Microsoft Help window comes up saying how to reinstall HP Photosmart Essential!! Is there any way to find the registry key (I assume) that allows a program to be launched when a memory card is inserted?

I want generic right click on explorer, on which, search gives me this registry to edit: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" My problem lies with the value of the key, which doesnt work on %1 but on some static value like /cygdrive/c Could someone please tell me the proper way to pass current directory to the command, also please refer me some basic and advanced pages for same.   I just got a laptop from a friend. The CD/DVD drive is not present in "My Computer". But the tray comes out when I press the button and everything. I remember long time ago, enabling it by changing some registry value, but I forgot which one. I have administrator privileges. I can see it in the device manager. But it has a yellow exclamation icon on it. My OS: Windows XP SP3 In Device Manager, inside the properties window for this device, the following error is shown in the "Device Status" box.   I have to use the On-Screen Keyboard of Windows 7 for typing: (In case you haven't used it yet, you can get it via: All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard or simply search for "osk.exe") It offers a feature to "hover" about the buttons. Microsoft describes it as the following: In hovering mode, you use a mouse or joystick to point to a key for a predefined period of time, and the selected character is typed automatically. There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!

  I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, though I doubt that matters, in this case. So, how do you set the default windows size/positions? Is there a registry tweak for this? Going to Tools->Folder Options...->View Apply to Folders or Reset Folders doesn't work. So, whenever I open a new window to a random new folder I haven't opened before, I don't want it to take 75% of the screen. Is there any way I could make it open smaller? (So it opens correctly the first time.)

Issue is I can't install USB drivers, if I right-click uninstall, just installs same driver, which isn't working ofc. and giving error code 28.   I'm trying to change the default saving path to my specfied path for example if the file is picture (.jpg .gif etc..) and using google chrome I save an image the path can be anything from default or last used so I want it to be mine specfied for example I choose "C:\SaveHerePics" I don't know how you can change it maybe Registry? Dll?   Introduction I've always been searching for a way to make Visual Studio draw a line after a certain amount of characters: Below is a guide to enable these so called guidelines for various versions of Visual Studio. Visual Studio 2010 Install Paul Harrington's Editor Guidelines extension. Open the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Text Editor and add a new string called Guides with the value RGB(100,100,100), 80. The first part specifies the color, while the other one (80) is the column the line will be displayed. Or install the Guidelines UI extension, which will add entries to the editor's context menu for adding/removing the entries without needing to edit the registry directly. The current disadvantage of this method is that you can't specify the column directly. Visual Studio 2008 and Other Versions If you are using Visual Studio 2008 open the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Text Editor and add a new string called Guides with the value RGB(100,100,100), 80. The first part specifies the color, while the other one (80) is the column the line will be displayed. The vertical line will appear, when you restart Visual Studio.   I've written a program that edits a specific filetype , and I want to give the user the option to set my application as the default editor for this filetype (since I don't want an installer) on startup. • NTUSER.DAT and UsrClass.dat files building up by the thousands, why and can I delete?

  I've noticed that my web server, 2008 Xen VM, gradually loosing free space - more than I would of though from normal use and decided to investigate. There are two problem areas: *C:\Users\Administrator\ (6,755.0 MB)* with files: NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TM.blf AND C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ (6,743.8 MB) with files UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TM.blf From what I understand these are in-time backups of registry changes. If that is the case I cannot possibly understand why there would be 10000+ changes. (That's how many files there are per folder location, over 20,000 per folder in total.) The files are using almost 15GB of space and I want rid of them, I'm just wondering can I remove them. However, I need to understand why they are being created so I can avoid this in the future. Any ideas why there would be so many? Is there a way I can check to see what is making the modifications? Are they created with login attempts? Are they created in relation to every day Web Server use? etc. and so on
