  Hello, Let's imagine that we have 8Gb of RAM on server. I'm mounting /dev/shm with 4Gb on board. mount -o remount,size=4G /dev/shm Will this memory be strictly reserved for shared memory or if /dev/shm is empty this memory could be used by regular applications (web server, php etc.)? PS:Sorry for my English. I'm asking it because I've just checked df -h and found tmpfs 6.0G 0 6.0G 0% /dev/shm on 8Gb RAM sever. I don't know who made this setup, but it seems to me awful. • L2TP Site to Site VPN issues

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server that needs to establish a VPN connection to a remote VPN server. We're using the L2TP protocol with a pre-shared key. I initially used the New Demand Dial interface wizard. Then I went into properties on the interface and set the type of VPn to L2TP/IPSec and put the key under the advanced settings. The error I received when attempting to connect is: An error occured during connection of the interface. A Demand Dial Router attempted to connect over a port that was reserved for Remote Access Clients only.

  I live in an apartment and some new guys have apparently moved into one of the apartments. They have been shamelessly hacking into my WiFi. Mine was initially a WEP encrypted network and out of laziness I just limited and reserved the IPS on my router for the people in my house. Yesterday I had to free up an IP for a guest in my house but before he could join the network these guys connected in. I have changed my encryption to WPA2 and hope they dont have the hardware/patience required to hack into it, but there are many wi-fi networks in my apartment most of which are secured using WEP. I don't really want to call the police on them. Is there any way to deter them from misusing other people's wi-fi ? I have gone through I think someone else has access to my wireless network. What next? but I have already taken the steps mentioned there.

  In cmd prompt, you can run two commands on one line like so: ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew When I run this command in PowerShell, I get: Ampersand not allowed. The & operator is reserved for future use Does PowerShell have an operator that allows me to quickly produce the equivalent of & in cmd prompt? Any method of running two commands in one line will do. I know that I can make a script, but I'm looking for something a little more off the cuff.

• How do you reset the range of available ports that libvirt autoport can use?

  Libvirt is using its autoport setting to automatically allocate ports within a range starting at 5900. Example excerpt from an XML configuration for a VM: <graphics type='spice' port='6000' autoport='yes' listen='127.0.0.1' keymap='en-gb'> <listen type='address' address='127.0.0.1'/> </graphics> Currently, there are free ports at various points within the range 5900 to 5999. However, newly booted VMs are picking up ports from 6000 on. I need for it to reuse the available ports in the 59xx range. Is this possible? If so, how do I do this? The problem arose because VMs are being accessed via websockets, and it tried to use 6000 which is a reserved port for X11. A solution that explains how to blacklist ports from being picked up by autport would also be sufficient.

• Prioritize file sharing performance in Windows Server 2008

  I've got a server running Windows Server 2008, and use it mainly for sharing files throughout the domain from a number of disks. It's running on VMware ESXi 4.0, in case that matters. My problem is that when I log in to the server to check user permissions etc, the access speed the files on the remote disks almost grinds to a halt. I havn't been able to measure the speeds, but I would guess it slows down to about 100kB/s as soon as I log in. This is on a gigabit network and the problems are equal for all users, even the ones connected to the same switch as the server. I've assigned 2 GB RAM to the server, and reserved it 1,5Ghz processor power. I don't have to do anything special on the server for this halt to occur. How can I make sure file sharing is prioritized on the server, so no matter what applications I'm using it will always make sure file sharing works properly? Could this be a VMware issue?

  I had an old computer with Windows XP. I transferred all my music, at least I hoped I had to a flash drive. Also, my computer kept giving me error messages that it could no longer sync to my Ipod Touch First Generation. I reformatted my Ipod back to original factory specs on the old computer. I have a new computer with Windows 7. I can't transfer my music from my flash drive to the ITunes Library. I also can't transfer it to my Ipod. I keep getting the message "Songs cannot be added to the Ipod because all of its space has been reserved for data." There's nothing in the Ipod memory. It's clear. What can I do? I want my music back.

• VirtualBox VRDP server doesn't start on Windows

  I've installed VirtualBox 4.1.8 on a Windows 7 Ultimate host system. I've set up an Arch Linux VM that starts just fine from the VirtualBox GUI. However, when I try to start it with VBoxHeadless --startvm <vm_name> it prints the following Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.1.6 (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. and then it just sits there. I never get the VRDE server is listening on port 3389 message like when I start a headless VM on a Linux machine. Do I have to configure anything else in order to get the VRDE server to run?

• Disk controller speed responsible for slow write speeds?

  I have question. I'm using ESXi 4.0U1 in an IBM x3200M2 with an integrated LSI 1064e RAID controller, without any kind of cache. I have 3 250GB HOT-SWAP SATA HDs configured in RAID1E (IME). ESXi works fine, read speed are quite OK, but write speeds are incredible slow, never more than 8MB/s, and this is the best case scenario, benchmarking with iozone streaming writes, using a VMWare Paravirtual controller and with only this VM active, no swapping of any kind (total vm memory reserved). Already wrote to IBM but I don't have any kind of pay support so they didn't even answered, so I'm just wondering... anybody has any experience with a similar setup? I just want to be sure this is hardware related and can't be fixed with some kind of config option, because I'm thinking on buying a new RAID controller (Adaptec 2405 looks nice). Thanks again!

• Amazon - install a complete server on EBS

  is it possible to install a full working OS with a webserver, db, and all needed stuff on an EBS storage? If so, would I immediatly gain benefits by mounting this EBS on a better instance? Otherwise (if I cannot install a complete image, or if you don't think it's reasonable) can I install the software so that I only need to mount the EBS on a new instance to have it working? I purchased a Medium Reserved Instance, but when there will be the need to get a better instance I'd like to move the whole db/website, I'd simply buy a better instance and then attach the EBS. Is it possibile? I'm imaging about it like an hard drive that would be mounted on a better server. Of course, more RAM would allow me to increase caching limits, and that's ok, but I don't want to reinstall anything (the main website is a magentocommerce and it's pretty painful to move it). P.S. is the Standard EBS (100 IOPS) valid or do I need to choose a Provisioned IOPS (up to 1000 IOPS)?

• Can I prevent a particular program from showing up in the taskbar on Windows XP?

  I have a program that I need to run more or less continuously, but which I won't need to access very frequently. Currently, launching the program creates a window and causes the program to appear on the taskbar. I'm fine with the program window appearing, but I'd just as soon the taskbar be reserved for programs that I need to switch between frequently—it would be superior for this program to only appear as an icon in the notification area, if at all. Is this possible? How do I do this?

• Unable to connect to vrde virtualbox VM remotely

  So I've remotely created my first headless using ssh. Now I'm attempting to connect to this VM using RDP so I can install Ubuntu Server, but I cannot get connected at all. When starting the VM everything appears fine: $ vboxheadless -s WebTesting Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.0.16 (C) 2008-2012 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. VRDE server is listening on port 4455. And showvminfo shows: VRDE: enabled (Address 0.0.0.0, Ports 4455, MultiConn: off, ReuseSingleConn: off, Authentication type: null) However I'm still prompted with the "enter your credentials" screen every time I attempt to connect. From reading the documentation null shouldn't prompt me with this screen at all... Any help with this is greatly appreciated. P.S. I am using ssh tunneling in putty to tunnel in to my network.

• How to prevent boot manager missing after cloning a win764 image using Ghost 2003?

  I am running ghost 2003 command -fdsp, but once we have cloned the image and restored it onto exactly the same make and model machine, we are force to run win7 setup and run a repair which fixes the boot menu, I want to prevent this requirement to fix the problem, any suggestions besides the obvious of using Windows AIK tools, new versions of ghost/clonzilla. I want to prevent the problem in the first place, it's 1 partition only, on a levano workstation m82 with UEFI and a 100mb system reserved partition. Windows Boot Manager screen and states: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair you computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Status: 0xc000000e

• Missing hard drive total space in Windows

  I have an HP Pavilion DM4 with a 750 GB hard drive. A few days ago, I installed Windows 8 on it, so I am now dual booting Win7 and Win8 (and I also have a 100 MB system reserved partition). I noticed that I am only able to see 700 GB of hard disk space (169 for Win 8 and 529 for Win 7). I booted of an Ubuntu 11.04 LiveCD and in the disk utility it said that my Win 8 partition is 182 GB and my Win 7 partition is 568 GB, correctly adding up to 750 GB. I would like to reclaim the missing space in its respective partitions. Any advice on how to go about doing this?

• SQL Server 2008 (64-bit)

  I have transaction log backup failures randomly. SQL Server Log says 'Memory constraints resulted reduced backup/restore buffer sizes. Proceding with 6 buffers of size 64KB.', and the SQL Server Agent Error Log has quite a few errors like 'Unable to start Job Manager thread for job xxx', '[298] SQLServer Error: 768, Client unable to establish connection [SQLSTATE 08001]', [298] SQLServer Error: 768, SSL Provider: Not enough memory is available to complete this request [SQLSTATE 08001]'. I am really low on the memory? It has total of 32 GB, but I set maximum to 20. Task manager shows it is using 99% of physical memory. Memoryclerk-sqlbufferpool has 32GB for the Virtual Memory Reserved, and 20 GB for the Virtual Memory Committed. From the perfmon, SQLServer:Memory Manager/Total ServerMemory shows 21GB of memory in use, that's what I set the maximum to. I don't where the rest of memory go. Can anyone advice? • Releasing Shrinkr – An ASP.NET MVC Url Shrinking Service

Recently, I was able to manage some time for this project to complete the remaining features that we planned for the initial release. • Platform Builder: Cloning – the Linker is your Friend

  I was tasked this week with making a minor change to NetMsgBox() behavior. NetMsgBox() is a little function in NETUI that handles MessageBox() for the Network User Interface.  The obvious solution is to clone the entire NETUI directory from Public\Common\Oak\Drivers (see Platform Builder: Clone Public Code for more on cloning). If you haven’t already, take a minute to look in that folder. There are a lot of files in the folder, but I only needed to modify one function in one of those files. There must be a better way. Enter the linker. Instead of cloning the entire folder, here is what I did: Create a new folder in my Platform named NETUI (but the name isn’t important) Copy the C file that I needed to modify to the new folder, in this case netui.c Copy a makefile from one of the other folder (really they are all the same) Run Sysgen_capture Open a build window (see Platform Builder: Build Tools, Opening a Build Window) Change directories to the new folder Run “Sysgen_capture netui” Rename sources.netui to sources Add the C file to sources as SOURCES=netui.c Modify the code Build the code Done That is it, the functions from my new folder now replace the functions from the Public code and link with the rest to create NETUI.dll.   I like to use both StyleCop and CodeIt.Right to validate my code – StyleCop because it’s free and CodeIt.Right because it’s really good. While StyleCop provides only validation, CodeIt.Righ provides both validation and correction of violations. Unfortunately, CodeIt.Right’s supplied template for code file headers does not conform to StyleCop rules. Fortunately, CodeIt.Right allows us to define our own template.
