• How to determine the used size of device associated's buffer

  Hi, when mounting a device without the "sync" option, e. g. by invoking the following: mount -o async /dev/sdc1 /mnt a buffer is associated with a device to optimize (speed) read/write operations. Is there a way to determine the size of this buffer? Another question that comes into my mind is, if it's possible to find out how much of it is used currently. This can be interesting to determine the time it would take to "sync" or "umount" slow devices, such as flash-based media. Thanks in advance for your answers, Rainer

  That's one of my favorite bumper stickers. (Well, along with the sticker placed upside down on Jeep windows that says "If you can read this, roll me over.") I don't object to the "silly boys" sticker because, in my humble opinion, girls look much cuter in Jeeps than guys do. But as Ginny Henningsen points out, a similar sentiment can be applied to Oracle VM VirtualBox. In the beginning of the series author Rick Morelan is not shy to explain the simplest concept of how to open SQL Server Management Studio. Honestly the book starts with that much basic but as it progresses further Rick discussing about various advanced concepts from query tuning to Core Architecture. This five part series is written with keeping SQL Server Exam 70-433. Instead of just focusing on what will be there in exam, this series is focusing on learning the important concepts thoroughly. This book no way take short cut to explain any concepts and at times, will go beyond the topic at length. The best part is that all the books has many companion videos explaining the concepts and videos. Every Wednesday I like to post a video which explains something in quick few seconds. This data type continues with SQL Server 2008 where expanded XML features are available, most notably is the power of the XQuery language to analyze and query the values contained in your XML instance. There are five XML data type methods available in SQL Server 2008: query() – Used to extract XML fragments from an XML data type. value() – Used to extract a single value from an XML document. exist() – Used to determine if a specified node exists. Returns 1 if yes and 0 if no. modify() – Updates XML data in an XML data type. node() – Shreds XML data into multiple rows (not covered in this blog post). While both of these beliefs are true 99% of the time, they are not true in all cases. It is these outlying cases that frequently cause unexpected results in your SQL code. However; a CTE is more powerful than a derived table as it can also be self-referencing, or even referenced multiple times in the same query. A recursive CTE requires four elements in order to work properly: Anchor query (runs once and the results ‘seed’ the Recursive query) Recursive query (runs multiple times and is the criteria for the remaining results) UNION ALL statement to bind the Anchor and Recursive queries together. INNER JOIN statement to bind the Recursive query to the results of the CTE.   If you want to be well armed for that debate, study this comparison of the commands and capabilities of each OS before the spittle starts flying: How Solaris 11 Compares to Solaris 10 For instance, did you know that the command to configure your wireless network in Solaris 11 is not wificonfig, but dladm and ipadm for manual configuration, and netcfg for automatic configuration? Personally, I think the change was made to correct the grievous offense of spelling out "config" in the wificonfig command, instead of sticking to the widely accepted "cfg" convention, but loathe as I am to admit it, there may have been additional reasons for the change.   after the debacle a few hours back I managed to get a working desktop after using an ethernet cable and sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But now when I try to run ubuntu software center from CLI this is what I get rick@Abigail:~$ sudo software-center Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 34, in <module> import gtk ImportError: No module named gtk Any guesses how to fix this. The search box on synaptic is also missing. It has something to do with module named axi. I think the both are related.

  Hej, it is relatively easy to use a file for emulating a block-device using losetup in Linux: http://www.walkernews.net/2007/07/01/create-linux-loopback-file-system-on-disk-file/ Can anyone please give me a hint on what to look for in case I want to program my own block-device which is based on several files I'm taking content from? For your understanding, I would like to let's say take bytes 1-500 and 1.000-3.000 from file1 and bytes 501-999 and bytes 3.001 to 5.000 from file2 to offer them as a combined block-device. My prefered programming language is Python and I want to write my program in user-space as much as possible. For Windows I found such an implementation.
