• Automatically delete old files from a specified folder?

  I want to set up an automatic task that will automatically delete files older than X days from a specific folder. I'd prefer to do it without having to install any 3rd party software, but I'll be ok if it's a very small and simple utility. I want this to force me to keep my files organized. I am setting my browser to download to a standard folder, and then with this script to automatically delete files older than a week, I will be forced to move & organize downloaded files I want to keep.

• Running an Automator task at night

  I've just created an Automator workflow and I'm using crontab to execute it at night. The problem is that, after a while, the machine is going to sleep and a password is required (this is the intended behaviour). Unfortunately, Automator seems to be unable to perform the task when the password is required. It works like a charm if the "password required" dialog is not displayed (before the sleep). Any suggestion on how to solve this?

• How to go about scheduling a task in windows 7 to change wireless connection

  This may or not be something that can be done. I cannot find anything on the wireless connection manager built into windows 7 let alone methods for passing params into it. Problem is as follows: I have 2 wireless routers. One provides internet access, the other provides sole access to the local network. Every day at 4am the main system creates a backup in 2 locations. One is a External usb drive, the other is a location on the network. This is all cool if it is remembered to change over to the local network router before leaving. But if it is forgotten the roof will collapse, the walls will burn, and I will be... well you get the idea. Solution: there is already a custom event that fires a automated backup program at 4am everyday. I need someway to force the wireless network to use the correct connection at say 3:58am everyday. Any ideas????

• Cannot schedule task to run under domain user account other than current user

  On our Win 2008 machines I can't schedule tasks for domain users because the domain name does not resolve to network name but the AD dc name. The "network name" looks like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM and the "dc" / "name" would look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN. When selecting the domain user account the account qualifier will look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN\task.user. This results in an "invalid account" error. When however keeping the currently logged in user it will display ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM\current.user. Does this behaviour result from the presumable "illegal" domain name? Is there a workaround for this? update I could of course log in as the desired domain account and create the task but since this account is a account used for running services I want to avoid creating a user profile on the machine.

• Windows scheduler - Tasks not running when user not logged in

  I have Windows Server 2003, with schedules setup via Remote Desktop under one account. That account appears in the 'creator' column too. I have 'Run only if logged on' unticked. When I have logged in under that account and then 'disconnected' leaving the the session alive, the schedule runs. But every time the server is rebooted, the task again fails to run until I again log in and disconnect. Any KB fixes I've missed or issues I've overlooked? Normally I only discover the issue when a user tells me the schedule has stopped running so it's a real reliability issue. I'd also be happy with an answer suggesting an alternative scheduler with higher reliability. Thanks

Please don't mention Clustering - We're not doing that. I can't be arsed to write a service, there simply isn't enough time do I Task Scheduler - every minute: Invoke a powershell script that loads the DLL does the business Task scheduler - At Startup : Invoke a similer powershell script that loads the DLL once but then loops and sleeps, refreshing the Object that the DLL exposes.   Note: I've viewed cron: can’t lock /var/run/crond.pid, otherpid may be 3759 but I believe my question is different (but with the same resulting problem.) I'm very new to cron. I setup a script to run a python script every minute to test that everything was working. I did use crontab to accomplish this. It worked great, so I wanted to switch it to run every 4 hour. I changed my * * * * * {...} to * */4 * * * {...} but the job is continues to run every minute. It's been like this for the last hour or so. When I attempt to run cron restart (thinking that would solve the problem), I receive the following error message: cron: can't lock /var/run/crond.pid, otherpid may be 2311: Resource temporarily unavailable Is my cron syntax wrong? And why might I not be able to restart cron?

  Hi, I need to schedule a task in Windows Server 2003 that executes this script that deletes files older that n days in the specified folder. The script needs 3 parameters: %1 path to folder where files need to be deleted %2 file names (es. *.log) %3 number of days @echo off forfiles -p %1 -s -m %2 -d -%3 -c "cmd /c del /q @path" The script works fine if the first parameter has no spaces inside. This is an example of parameters that work: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" N:\FOLDER\FOLDER *.zip 60 This is an example that does not work: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" N:\Program Files\LOG *.zip 60 This does not work too: "C:\Program Files\SCRIPT\DeleteFilesOlderThanXDays.cmd" "N:\Program Files\LOG" *.zip 60 I think it would be a quotes problem but I can't figure out the solution.   We had a virtual machine running on a VMWare Server host on Windows Server 2003. The machine is set up with non persistent disks. We had a windows task schedule set up that ran a batch file to reset the machine each week so that it returned to it's original state. The batch file that we had running was: "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\vmware-cmd" "C:\Virtual Machines\VirtualMachineName\VirtualMachineName.vmx" stop hard "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\vmware-cmd" "C:\Virtual Machines\VirtualMachineName\VirtualMachineName1.vmx" start We have since migrated this machine to the free version of ESXi 4.1. Can anyone let me know if and how it is possible to schedule such a restart?

The schedular calls my batch file correctly but it does not run the other batch files which I am calling internally! Any idea why this is not working? When I run my batch file manually outside the scheduler... it works! Its only with the scheduler that it cannot run the other batch files. I have already tried the UCA option.

• Running batch file through a service.

  I'm trying to schedule a batch file to run through a third party application, however the output file doesn't get created in the directory. If I run the .BAT file from the command line, it works and the file gets created. Also using the Windows Schedule will also succeed. Basically, the 3rd party software will schedule the .BAT file and it shows success within the 3rd party user interface. The difference between running from the command prompt and the software, is that the software will use its Windows service to launch the batch. The 3rd party software will show success since it was able to successfully call the .BAT file to run, however it has no control of the other EXE's that's being called within the script. I'm able to run a simple .BAT file in the 3rd party software, for example a copy command. The .BAT I'm having problems with calls a compiled EXE which launches Excel to create a file to a location. The .bat file calls something.exe, which then calls Excel.exe: C:\something.exe -o D:\filename.xlsm C:\filename.xlsm refresh_pivot Do you think it's a permissions issue? I used Process Monitor to verify any Access Denied errors but everything seems to be working according to the trace. It worked on a non-64-bit OS, I'm currently using Win2008 64-bit.

• Ok to edit task's xml file in c:\windows\system32\Tasks?

  I wrote a PowerShell script that check the executable in the < action tag for each task in the Task directory and mark the < enabled TRUEorFALSE< / enabled tag as false/true depending on the validity of the digital signature of the executable. After reading each task, the script re-saves the task file with the same name, type and location. Now my issue is that I get this message when I lunch task scheduler: “Task XYZ: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.” This message appears for all the tasks that were scanned and saved. Does editing task’s xml file directly corrupt the task? Is there any task decency that may cause this error(ex: registry value)?

• My powershell script wont save a file when run using Task Scheduler, do I need to specify a specific argument?

  I have a script that downloads a temporary Excel file, copies parts of it to a new file, and saves it to a specific location on the network. The problem I'm having is that the new file is never created/saved. If I run the script locally (through cmd.exe, powershell, or powershell ise), it WILL save the file locally, or to the network. If I try running the script via a schedule or on-demand via Task Scheduler, the temporary file is created, but the final document is never created or saved. Is there a specific argument I need to pass, or anything I could be doing wrong? This is the command I'm currently using: powershell.exe -file C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\thescript.ps1 Since it calls environment variables, and other variables relative to the scripts positon, I also set "Start in" to C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\
