• How can I create a dynamic site that is still search-bot friendly?

  If I want to have a slide effect between pages. You click a link, it is loaded off to the side and then slides in (pushing the old page off the other side). I can imagine using jQuery to do the PHP and the effects... but how do I do something like this that gracefully degrades for users without Javascript, including bots? Possibly more problematic: what if I wanted to have a sort of mural background across the site, perhaps with a parallax scrolling effect, and sliding to other pages reveals more of the, possibly giant image? Again, I can imagine how to do this with lots of fancy jQuery and PHP but it would heavily rely on those. How can I gracefully degrade in a situation like that? Any pointers, articles or books would be greatly appreciated. I keep trying to search for answers but I just get a lot of "theory"-based, unhelpful blogs.

• Intro to NoSQL with RavenDB

  I did a talk on RavenDB back on 9/19/2012. Here was my abstract: "RavenDB is a document database which is gaining popularity in the 'NoSQL' movement. This session will introduce you to some non-relational concepts and describe how they compare/contrast with the relational solutions you're already familiar with. We'll go through the basics of RavenDB and show how easy it is to use from .NET” My next goal is to figure out how to post the slidedeck here (and maybe the code samples if I'm feeling ambitious). Then, the slides can be downloaded for only three easy payments of $39.99. • A simple deployment example using Oracle Solaris 11

  Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! You can download the original source PPTX without some of the formatting errors in the above.

It was a pleasure for me to be back in Bangkok again even though I didn't have much time again due to my overnight flight to Seoul after the workshop. But thanks for your questions - I will follow up as soon as I'm getting back home. And thanks to Francisco Alvarez, Oracle ACE Director from New Zealand, for inviting me. • How to get out of supporting deadend sales pitches?

  As part of being a programmer, you often are asked to provide estimates/ make slideware / do technical demos for Sales teams to present to end-clients. Sometimes we go along for the 'technical' discussions or 'strategic capability planning' or some similar mumbo-jumbo. Sometimes, you kind of know which ones are totally going to fail and are not worth pursuing but the Sales guys present fake optimism and extract 'few more slides' out of you or the 'last conference call'. These don't lead to anywhere and are just a waste of time from other tasks for the week. My question is how do you get out of these situations without coming across as non-cooperative. Updated after Kate Gregory's answer: The problem is related to projects we know are doomed (from the technical feedback we've received) But Sales ain't convinced since they've just had a call higher up the management chain - so it's definitely going ahead !

• Javascript slider with fade

  I've been scouring the web for a slider that offers a particular effect, but I can't find one. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help out... Specifically, I need a slider that will slide left and right through a series of HTML DIVs. However, I also need the old slide to fade out as it slides. This is because I don't what to have a visible frame around the the slider, so I don't want the old slide to be cropped against an invisible edge. It's hard to explain in words, so here's a graphic. In each case the green slide is entering the view, the red one is existing. Is possible, I'd like the slide to use CSS3 transitions where available for the smoothest possible effect. Has only ever come across such a beast?

• Sudden crash with gnome and unity

  I've a Toshiba Satellite Pro U400 with Ubuntu 11.10. Very often when I'm working on the pc reboots itself, or close all programs and return to the login screen. This is very annoying, often I lose my job I'm doing, sometimes I make bad figures while projecting slides or movies in public. What happens is that with Unity 3 with Gnome, so I do not depend on these. I also checked the log files but with little success because I can not interpret them the best. Can you help me solve this serious problem? thanks. Roberto

• How can I teleport seamlessly, without using interpolation?

  I've been implementing Bukkit plugin for creating toggleable in-game warping areas that will teleport any catched entity to other similar area. I was going to implement concept of non-Euclidean maze using this plugin, but, unfortunately, I've discovered that doing Entity.teleport() causes client to interpolate movement while teleporting, so player slides towards target like Enderman and receives screen updates, so for a split second all underground stuff is visible. While for "just teleport me where I want" usage this is just fine, it ruins whole idea of seamless teleporting, as player can clearly see when transfer happened even without need to look at debug screen. Is there possibility to somehow disable interpolating while teleporting without modifying client, or maybe prevent client from updating screen while it's being teleported?

• Attributes and Behaviours in game object design

  Recently I have read interesting slides about game object design written by Marcin Chady Theory and Practice of the Game Object Component Architecture. I have prototyped quick sample that utilize all Attributes\Behaviour idea with some sample data. Now I have faced a little problem when I added a RenderingSystem to my prototype application. I have created an object with RenderBehaviour which listens for messages (OnMessage function) like MovedObject in order to mark them as invalid and in OnUpdate pass I am inserting a new renderable object to rederer queue. I have noticed that rendering updates should be the last thing made in single frame and this causes RenderBehaviour to depend on any other Behaviour that changes object position (i.ex. PhysicsSystem and PhysicsBehaviour). I am not even sure if I am doing this the way it should be. Do you have any clues that might put me on the right track?

• Upload image file: is compression on client side already possible?

  When offering photo file uploading, usually the user will have badly compressed and huge (10+ megapixels) JPEG files from their cameras or phones. On the server side, these files will get re-compressed to something like 800x600px and JPEG quality 7 or 8. Is it (already) possible to do that re-compression on the client side? So that I would only need to transmit some 100kB (800x600px) and not 3 MB or more. Something like: (1) With javascript's new FileSystem API ( http://slides.html5rocks.com/#filewriter ) it would be possible to read the photo file's data into client side JS. (2) Then it would be necessary to re-encode the JPEG data, which is possible, but I counld not find any library for that (yet). Anybody knows such a library? (3) Last step would be to POST the re-compressed JPEG data to the server side for storage and get a URL to the stored photo file back from the server for inclusion into the client's HTML. I am looking for some jQuery plugin, other JS library or example web page that does this.

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Greetings! I will be speaking at NNUG Kristiansand tonight (sorry for the very short notice). So I was thinking what should I demo tonight?Hmm!!!Instead of using any slides or such material, what I thought would be a tonne of fun, would be to develop a service bus based application running in Azure. This will be a good opportunity to code and talk, and run into some snafus and show off some VS2012 improvements/annoyances. At the end of an apprx. 1 hour talk, I hope to have an application ready that you can run yourself by the end of the evening. hehe :) .. now that’s cool isn’t it? :) ..   Java2Days 2012 was held in Sofia, Bulgaria on October 25-26. This was the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region, having three separate tracks for Java, the Cloud and Mobile. It attracted over a thousand enthusiastic, bright young developers and a number of world class speakers. There were no less than three full-house sessions on Java EE/GlassFish - one on Java EE 7, one on Domain-Driven Design using Java EE 6 and one on JSR 356/WebSocket. • GlassFish Community Event @ JavaOne - Save the date!

  The interest for having a GlassFish community event at JavaOne is still very strong both inside Oracle and in the community, so this year again we'll be hosting a get together on the Sunday prior to the main event. If you're in town and attending JavaOne, mark your calendars : Sunday 2nd, October 2011 - 12:30pm-4:30pm in the Moscone This will be an opportunity to discuss the community status (adoption of Java EE 6, GlassFish 3.1.x) and hear about future plans, mainly around Java EE 7 and the related GlassFish release(s). We'd also like to have several participants share their deployment stories as well as some time for an free-form unconference format and some team building activity. Of course, beyond all the content shared in slides, this should really also be a good excuse to meet folks from the community and from the core GlassFish team at Oracle. • Understanding how to go from a scene to what's actually rendered to screen in OpenGL?

  I want something that explains step by step how, after setting up a simple scene I can go from that 'world' space, to what's finally rendered on my screen (ie, actually implement something). I need the resource to clearly show how to derive and set up both orthographic and perspective projection matrices... basically I want to thoroughly understand what's going on behind the scenes and not plug in random things without knowing what they do. I've found lots of half explanations, presentation slides, walls of text, etc that aren't really doing much for me. I have a basic understanding of linear algebra/matrix transforms, and a rough idea of what's going on when you go from model space - screen, but not enough to actually implement it in code.

  I am an experienced programmer but completely new to the market. Someone wants me to do a project for them, but I do not know how much it is worth. What are general guidelines/advices for finding what a project is worth on the market? If I can ask here about this particular one, it is a HTML5 site with a login/register form and a video player that has to play a lecture video and powerpoint slides synchronized. They'll give me the video, the audio the powerpoints. I should also do some editting on the video before.

• Powerpoint: remote pointing and slide track device

  I think that this question may not be suitable for this forum. But I need your help. I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. I always use Ubuntu and powerpoint with libreoffice impress. I have been looking products on amazon, most of them are either for Windows or MAC. I am not sure whether they will work on Ubuntu. I think that at least some of of you have been using a device for presentations on Ubuntu. It would be great if you share one that will work seamlessly with Ubuntu. Thanks.

• Telerik MVC: Telerik Menu Drops down Under Telerik Grid

  I have just added a Telerik menu to my MVC application. I also have many views that render Telerik grids on them. Problem: My menu has one item with sub items. When I hover over that menu item, the dropdown slides beneath the Telerik Grid, which hides most of the sub items and makes it impossible to click them. Any idea how to make the menu dropdown slide over the grid instead of under it?

It's for the app settings so I want to have nested options. Any ideas how to do this? The application type was a Navigation app to start with which is where the Root View Controller's UINavigationController came from.

• Hide presentation controls in LaTeX beamer presentation
