• Flaws in my PHP development setup - sharing sources causing lags

  I have following development setup for my PHP projects: Working station running on Windows 7 with PhpStorm IDE. GIT for version controlling. CentOS on virtual machine (VirtualBox) with Apache and MySQL (copy of production server). So far, I've been sharing project's source folders between host and guest systems and it was working quite well only really slow. The reason behind this is that Apache was reading files from remote folder (mounted locally). After doing some research, I found out that this set up can be improved by using disk mapping (Samba) instead of folder sharing. So I did that change. I configured my PhpStorm to automatically deploy files to mapped drive. Everything works like a charm now, except for one problem - when I change branches I need to synchronize project's local folder with the one on mapped drive and that takes time, a lot of time (like branching in SVN). Is there another way to handle this than just working on files directly on mapped drive?

• Splitting up revenue among development team members on Apple's app store

  A friend and I have started developing an app to put on Apple's app store. Development is going fine, but thinking ahead, we're trying to come up with an easy way to share any revenue coming from our efforts. The app store allows you to deposit your revenue into a single bank account, but there's no easy way to split revenue among several people. How do (small) dev teams split up revenue on their products, on, and off the app store? As far as I can tell, banks don't offer an easy way to automatically split the balance on an account 50-50 (or any other percentage, for that matter), especially on a regular basis. So how do teams deal with this? We're not incorporated, and we don't have an official business set up. We're considering depositing all the money into one of our accounts and manually transferring half the money to the other person, but this isn't sustainable over long periods of time. Is there a low-cost, sustainable, automatic process for handling these finances?

  On my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system the Software Centre and Update Manager do not open. I am unable to install any updates. And the message given below pops up. I am looking for a step-by-step process to fix this, and as a newbie, I don't know how to use the command line. • Best book for developer who needs to learn software fundamentals

  I have recently inherited a team of developers, none of whom really have any programming experience. Some are really bright, and are learning on their own. I am looking for one or two books that are practical but show the core practices of professional development: Structure, OO, naming, DRY, why elegance matters, etc. When I was learning, I loved Code Complete, and Programming Pearls, but they are dated now. Any recommendations for good books that could be used in tandem with a language specific book to help understand? Thanks in advance!

• How to choose a development method?

  There are many academic/industrial researchs about various development methods (Scrum, XP, waterfall, ect.), telling us how to do it right and stuff. But I never saw something that suggest how to choose a method, what will be better for a given project. I know that what the developers are used to is an very important aspect. But lets say that I am assembling a new group from scratch, and that every programmer in the world is willing to work with me. :) What aspects of the project should I consider to decide between Scrum, XP, TDD, ect.? Or is that an entirely human thing, regardless of what is being developed? I said that all programmers are available, but you may comment they're knowledge about the domain, or other characteristics in the answers. E.g. "If you chose to hire people with no domain knowledge, MethodX is better than MathodY, beacause ...." is a completely welcomed answer.

• Packages don't show up after adding ppa

  I added ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/firefox-aurora/ubuntu oneiric and ppa:banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu oneiric to my software sources, then did apt-get update. However, after selecting their specific sources from the menu in Software Center, the only packages available are language packs and extensions for Banshee and firefox-aurora. I had already uninstalled Banshee and Firefox. If I try and install Banshee/Aurora with sudo apt-get it will install the old version. Searching for Banshee/Aurora in Software Center only shows the old version. I'm guessing the packages in the PPAs conflict with the packages in the main sources. How do I install the newer versions?

Rather than just giving a swag estimate of 2-3 weeks or 3-6 months... what is the simplest way to define software schedules so they are not so painful to define? For instance, customer A wants a feature by 02/01/2011. How do you schedule time to implement this feature knowing that other bug fixes may be needed along the way and take up additional engineering time?

  With the advent of a new technology, some old ideas - despite been good - are forgotten in the process. I read a lot how some "new" thing was already present in Lisp like 60 years ago, but only recently resurface with other name or on top of another language. Now look like the new old thing is build functional, non-mutable, non-locking-thread stuff... and that make me wonder what have been "lost" in the art of development of software? What ideas are almost forgotten, waiting for resurface? One of my, I remember when I code in foxpro. The idea of have a full stack to develop database apps without impedance mismatch is something I truly miss. In the current languages, I never find another environment that match how easy was develop in fox back them. What else is missing?

Purpose is to learn the rules of adding new modules and features, so when it comes to maintaining existing ones there is some concept. So, I'm looking for a good book, tutorial or websites where I can continue to read about this. Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... • Cannot Install Wine Windows platform loader both from Terminal and software Center

  I recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my PC. I want to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, so I tried to install WINE. I tried to install from the Terminal and from the Software Center. Both times, it failed in the middle of process. This is the error.   Question: Is there an open source license that requires that my name (or a name that I want to promote) will always be associated with a project and derivations of it? (Either within the copyright notice (©) or other.) Motivation: - My main motivation is to gain reputation. If it gained wide use, it could look very good on resume (I understand this is a long shot). - An additional benefit is that it would explicitly state to prospective employers that this code was used by myself before I started with the company and will continue to be used when I leave. It is my understanding: I am aware that 99.9% of open-source projects never take off, and that I am taking a long shot in regard to advancing reputation/career. I understand that many don't read/respect licenses. I understand that open source projects take a lot of time to manage. I understand that 'Concensus-Based Development' is the best chance at motivating a community and that I may/will loose substantial control.

• Ubuntu software center crashes when i try to download anything

  I was trying to set up an old printer by installing several drivers, and I got a problem in software center. I am unable to download anything from it. It opens, but when I try to download something it drops an error message and the installation stops. I can do all the installations from command line, so it is not a major problem, but still will be nice having it again. I reinstall it several times from terminal trying all the solutions I found in the forum, but still the problem is here. Any help is appreciated. • Best practices for upgrading user data when updating versions of software

  In my code I check the current version of the software on launch and compare it to the version stored in the user's data file(s). If the version is newer, then I call different methods to update the old data to the newer data version, if necessary. I usually have to make a new method to convert the data with each update that changes user data in some way, and cannot remove the old ones in case there was someone who missed an update. So the app must be able to go through each method call and update their data until they get their data current. With larger data sets, this could be a problem. In addition, I recently had a brief discussion with another StackOverflow user this and he indicated he always appended a date stamp to the filename to manage data versions, although his reasoning as to why this was better than storing the version data in the file itself was unclear. Since I've rarely seen management of user data versions in books I've read, I'm curious what are the best practices for naming user data files and procedures for updating older data to newer versions.

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Software Center doesn't ask for a password anymore

  So, out of the blue, software-center stopped asking me for a password. It just runs, and then turns grey. Works fine as root, or with sudo. While investigating, I found out about polkit (new to me), and looked at the policies, which seem fine. Looking under localauthority, however, showed that while the sub-directories (10-, 20-, 30-, 50-, 90-) are there, there aren't any files under those. Is that my problem? Should there be a file in the 50-local.d? Or am I still looking in the wrong place for my problem? I looked for similar questions and looked at the answers, but they don't really help any. One other thing, I'm not sure it's related but seemed to happen about the same time: The Dash Home only shows items for recent files and downloads. Nothing anywhere else anymore.

• Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

Now while starting from http://developers.android.com I see the codes were in XML. So I googled for learning XML. The best site I found was http://www.w3schools.org but there I found that for learning XML I have to learn HTML and CSS. So I learned the basics of HTML and CSS. But, Now I find in that learning java is a must. So can someone give idea about the sequental languages that I should study now? Should I learn php,mysql too. • Install software with 12.04

  Just freshly installed from 12.04 after using 11.04 and dist-upgrading to 11.10 a few months back, figured a fresh installation was due. First thing I noticed is that synaptic is no longer installed by default. I've no issues with this, and assume the approach to install packages is now via the ubuntu software center. However, I notice there are a lot of packages missing. I was looking for "vagrant", which I've had to install manually with a sudo apt-get install, but was hoping to use GUI for most things. Surely there is a GUI way? I also noticed when checking for "vim", it comes up with gVim and a little note at the bottom saying "show 2 technical items", which when clicked shows the vim I was looking for. Just curious what the expected GUI way is of installing these supposed "technical packages".

• Rewriting software using Agile methodologies

  Suppose you have to rewrite an entire application using Agile methodologies, how would you do it? I guess you could write a big bunch of user stories based in the behavior of your current system. And then implement them in small iterations. But this wouldn't mean that we have the requirements UP FRONT?? Also, when would you start releasing? Agile says we should release early and often, but it doesn't make much sense to release before the complete rewrite has been completed. Anybody has used Agile before to rewrite software? How did you do it?
