• How can I make feasible the deployment of my application on the servers

  I am a Java Web Application Developer. I have an idea for a web application project that I am working on. I personally believe that the app has potential to become a popular website. Currently I am working on it as a developer with two others in the project. The development costs has been almost null uptil now since we are doing in-house development with open source technologies. But the costs are now going to appear as we'll have to host our application online on the servers. Right now I see this as the major expense as we go live. Are there any ways by which we can smartly deal with this hurdle ? We want to minimize the costs as much as possible, or even better, if we can make this null, perhaps, through some partnership agreement with the hosting solutions provider!? Your opinions are highly solicited!! Please enlighten with your experiences and knowledge. Thanks so much, for your time !

  Rake is a ruby internal DSL for build scripting. With (or without) the help of albacore rake makes an excellent build scripting tool for .NET projects. The albacore documentation does a good job of explaining how to build solutions with rake but there is nothing to assist with another common build task – updating configuration files. • Exchange 2010 Deployment Notes - ISA 2004 Server Issue

  An interesting ISA 2004 tidbit … While we were setting up our Exchange 2010 ActiveSync environment, we encountered a problem where we could not successfully telnet over port 443 from one of our ISA 2004 Servers to our Exchange 2010 Client Access Server Array. When we tried to telnet over port 443 from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array name, we would get a “Could not open connection to the host on port 443: Connect failed” error message. Also, when we used portqry over port 443 from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array name, we would get a “Error opening socket: 10065” and “No route to host” error messages. It was odd because we did not have any problems with using ping or tracert from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array and our firewall firewall policy was allowing 443 traffic to pass through. After some troubleshooting, we were able to telnet and use portqry over port 443 successfully if we stopped the Microsoft Firewall service on the ISA 2004 Server.  So, it was strictly a problem with ISA.  Eventually, we were able to isolate the problem to a ISA 2004 Server System Policy setting as shown below (to modify the System Policy, right-click Firewall Policy and click Edit System Policy). Under the Diagnostics Services – HTTP Connectivity verifiers Configuration Group, you need to enable the configuration group under the General tab to resolve the problem.  After we enabled the setting, we no longer had a problem.

• Seeking solution for printing-reporting .NET

  I am developing an application that prints in separate threads in extreme cases about 20-25 pages per minute to various thermal printers. Currently templates for these are XAML xps documents. All printers have graphics drivers that support EMF/GDI printing. So GDI-EMF is done by operating system resulting in slower performance. Sending raw text for printing is another good solution but doesnt work always , because some clients have old chinese thermal printer that nobody support thus impossible to change codepage / emulation. So it doesnt work always. Also most computers running my software are low end ATOM CPU. So I am thinking to return to GDI, EMF printing and have both Text-Only reports and EMF reports. Another reason i want EMF is because here receipts are signed by Electronic Fiscal Memory device.Most of these dont do good job extracting text from XPS as they dont follow the standard but how windows convert GDI to XPS.Even with text-only mode some of them dont support all character encodings and are impossible to send paper cut command after the sign. I know that using a reporting engine would solve rendering problem but I dont want to buy one. All I want is to be able to show tabular data and insert an image and replaced text.I know there is StringTemplate that could do the generation of template but the problem is i should parse somehow the template and render it using GDI commands. Is there any other solution/approach for this ? Or is there anything ready ?

• ASP.NET website deployment [on hold]

  I am getting my hands wet with ASP and I have been following the tutorials. I deployed the site and in Azure and it worked great. Today I started actually designing the site. And when I published, it looks as if it doesn't read any of the files I just updated, added, and modified. It works on my localhost, but not in the Azure. I thought when you publish, everything goes up, including the new files. I don't have enough reputation to add a picture so, you'll forgive me. SO, basically, how do I get my entire site uploaded? In case anyone does stop by, I was able to pull this out just recently: CA0058 Error Running Code Analysis CA0058 : The referenced assembly 'DotNetOpenAuth.AspNet, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=2780ccd10d57b246' could not be found. • ubuntu mass deployment kickstart file how/where?

  i've succesfully been able to prepare an OEM image that is ready to be cloned and installed in about 1100 machines. My only issue right now is that when the machine boots for the first time it asks for the basic setup questions. I think I have the kickstart file ready, but I dont know how to call it. My logic says that before I run the "prepare to ship to end user" script that I have to modify the boot parameters to call the ks file so the ks.cfg file goes with each drive. My issue is I cant figure out how to modify the boot parameters. Also, i dont know if there is a log i can check to see if its actually calling it or not. I am using ubuntu 12.04 desktop x64. I am trying on /etc/default/grub by modifying one line from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash ks=file:/ks.cfg" then I run an update-grub but its not working. My ks.cfg file is: ----------------------- #Generated by Kickstart Configurator #System language lang en_US #System keyboard keyboard us #System timezone timezone America/Tijuana Initial user user mytestuser --fullname "Test User" --iscrypted --password $sdfsfsdgthrttyujtkyktru #Rebootafter installation reboot ------------------------- what am I doing wrong? thanks, -gk

• Seeking for a better solution to restrict access in GRUB2 menu

  I just read that in certain situations you should also protect access to your GRUB2 menu by setting a password and may be refining acces by adding --unrestricted or --users as arguments to menuentries und submenus. I read the corresponding pages in the Ubuntu Community Documentation and the Arch Wiki. So, I created /etc/grub.d/01_security, stored usernames and passwords in there, made the file executable and ran update-grub. This is working as intended, every action in the menu prompts for username and password, but I also want to modify the automatically generated entries to either restrict them to certain users (via --users) or make them available for everyone, but not editable by everyone (via --unrestricted). I was able to find the proper lines in 10_linux and edit them accordingly, however I'd love to see an easier solution. Perhaps an option like GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true" or GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true in /etc/default/grub for easy (re)configuration (for linux and os-prober generated entries).   I am a .net background person with most of the work with Windows environment and IIS etc. I have been given a task to deploy one php application on RedHat Linux box. All I have is the credentials and the server IP of that box. Can someone help about how to get started creating a new website on Apache 2.0 on redhat box and then putting php code over to that. I do not have physical access to that server as well. I know it's very basis question, but I am in dark for these things. Even if you can point me to some documentation that's fine or else at least the analogy with IIS should also help to certain extent.

• The World of SQL Database Deployment

  In my early development days, I used Microsoft Access for building databases. It made things easy since I only needed to package the database with the installation package so my clients would have access to it. When we began the development of a new package in Visual Studio .NET I decided to use SQL Server Express. It was free and provided good tools - also free. I thought it was a tremendous idea until it came time to distribute our new software! What a surprise. The nightmare Ah, the choices! Detach the database and have the client reattach it to a newly installed – oh wait. FIRST my new client needs to download and install SQL Server Express with SQL Server Management Studio. That’s not a great thing, but it is one more nightmare step for users who may have other versions of SQL installed. Then the question became – do we detach and reattach or do we do a backup. It was too late (bad planning) to revert to Microsoft Access but we badly needed a simple way to package and distribute both the database AND sample contents. Red Gate to the rescue It took me a while to find an answer but I did find it in a package called SQL Packager sold by a relatively unpublicized company in England called Red Gate. They call their products “ingeniously simple” and I must agree with that description. With SQL Packager you point to the database (more in a minute) you want to distribute. A few mouse clicks and dialogs and you have an executable file that you can ship virtually anywhere and virtually any way which, when run, installs the database on your destination SQL Server instance! It really is that simple. Easier to show than tell Let’s explore a hypothetical case. Let’s say you have a local SQL database of customers and you have decided you want to share it with your subsidiaries or partners. Here is the underlying screen you will see on starting SQL Packager. There are a bunch of possibilities here but I’m going to keep this relatively simple. At this point I simply want to illustrate the simplicity of generating an executable to deliver your database. You will notice that you can set up a new package, edit an existing package or change a bunch of options. Start SQL packager And the following is the default dialog you get on startup. In the next dialog, I’ve selected the Server and Database. I’ve also selected Windows Authentication. Pressing Next causes SQL Packager to run a number of checks and produce a report. Now you’re given a comprehensive list of what is going to be packaged and you’re allowed to change it if you desire. I’ve never made any changes here so I can’t really make any suggestions. The just illustrates the comprehensive nature of so many Red Gate products including this one. Clicking Next gives you still further options. SQL Packager then works its magic and shows you a dialog with the results. Packager then gives you a dialog of the scripts it has generated. The capture above only shows 1 of 4 tabs. Finally pressing Next gives you the option to generate a .NET executable of a C# project. I’ve only generated an executable so I’m not in a position to tell you what the C# project looks like. That may be the subject of further discussions. You can rename the package and tell SQL Packager where to save it. I’ve skipped a lot but this will serve to illustrate the comprehensive (and ingenious) things Red Gate does. All in all, it’s a superb way to distribute populated SQL databases. Oh – we’ll save running the resulting executable for later also but believe me it’s insanely simple.

• Choosing the Database Solution for Large Data Application

  I have been tasked to write an application that will be a combination of document and inventory management in VB.net which will be used to store document images in TIFF, PDF, XPS, TXT, DOC, PPT and so on as binary data that can be retrieved for viewing, printing, and possible OCR to be searchable as well along with meta data such as sender, recipient, type of document, date, source, etc. So the table would probably be something like: DOC_NAME, DOC_DATE, NOTES, ... DOC_BINARY (where the actual document will be put inside) What my concern is finding a database solution that will not become unstable due to size restrictions, records limitations and performance. Some of the options are MS_SQL, SQL Express, SQLite, mySQL, and Access. Now I can pretty much eliminate Access right off the bat as it is just too limiting and not scalable. I can further eliminate SQL Express because of the 2 GB limit and again scalability. So that leaves me with MS_SQL, SQLite and mySQL (although if anyone has other options they think would be good as well, please feel free to share them, by no means am I set on these only). So this brings me to what you guys think is the best option for what I have described. The goal is that the data is all in one place (a single file) that will make backup and portability easier. For small volume usage, pretty much any solution will hold for a while, but my goal is to think ahead and make sure its able to withstand heavy large volume usage as well. Another consideration is also the interoperability with .NET and stability of such code to avoid errors and memory leaks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

• Spurious MachineToApplication Error With VS2010 Deployment

  Often when I'm building my MVC 2 application using Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. On the internet, this error seems to be related to having a nested web.config in your application. • Logic behind SCCM 2012 required PXE deployments

  I'm in the process of setting up Windows 7 deployment through PXE boot, with Microsoft SCCM 2012. The imaging itself works very well, but I have a question about the logic behind PXE deployments. My setup is the following: My Windows 7 deployment task sequence is deployed to the unknown computers group. (not required, press F12 to start installing) OSDComputerName variable is also set on the unknown computers group, so unknown computers that are being imaged will prompt for a pc name. The computer then becomes known in SCCM and is added to the correct collection(s). But if I want to reïnstall windows on a known computer things are different: I can do a required deployment of the imaging task sequence to the collection of computers. Then windows installs through PXE, without any human interaction, keeping the original computer name. But because the initial deployment was not required, the "required PXE deployment" flag is not set. So as soon as I add a new computer to a collection with a required PXE deployment, it will start to reïnstall windows again. I can also deploy the imaging task sequence to the new unknown computers as required, so the flag gets set initially. But then it does not prompt for a computer name. (and it generates a name like MININT-xxx) Which is also sort of what I want. Because when i want to re-install a machine, I want it to install without interaction. How can I solve this?
