    Considering the number of emails that are sent to me asking for support for MVVM Light toolkit, I find myself unable to answer all of them in sufficient time to make me feel good.   • How can i control how much Authority RRs a DNS answer returns ?

    Hello, i quite don't understand Authority RRs. Using dig to resolve some random A records, my caching DNS server sometimes also return Authority RRs and sometimes not. The number and the type of the returned Authority RRs also vary a lot. What does control whether Authority RRs are returned or not on a standard client query ? Is it a client or server setting ? What does control how many Authoriy RRs are returned ? What does control of the type of the Authority RRs records returned ? Sometimes it's multiple NS, sometimes it's a SOA. It's also often comes with Additional RRs of type A about the Authority RRs NS returned. I'm really looking for a RFC or kind of describing this. Thanks.

  • I noticed the answer to the Aug 2009 question of using VBA to set Custom Flag values

    We are actively using the Follow Up mail feature to assign users to particular mail follow up items. Although mail item follow ups are generally the province of the individual user, by changing the flag value from "Follow Up" to "User name", we can see each other's follow up tasks and group on responsible party. Currently we accomplish the Flag value change manually. My sense is the easiest way to perfect the process is a separate macro for each user. Along the lines of the macro to change the star/end due date to end of month, please define the macro to re-assign the Flag value for each highlighted mail item (previously assigned by default).   • Should entry level programmers be able to answer FizzBuzz?

    When interviewing entry level developers, I have used the FizzBuzz question as a type of acid test. Generally, I ask for a solution in pseudo-code or any language of their choice. If someone can't answer this question -- or get reasonably close, the interview generally ends shortly thereafter and we don't progress to more interesting code questions. In your opinion, is it fair/appropriate/accurate to filter entry-level staff in this manner? Should the average four year college graduate have a reasonable enough foundation to be able to throw up a pseudo-code solution of FizzBuzz?

    I'm working through the about_classes.rb file in the Ruby Koans, and have hit a brick wall with the "inside_a_method_self_refers_to_the_containing_object" test. Here's the code: class Dog7 attr_reader :name def initialize(initial_name) @name = initial_name end def get_self self end def to_s __ end def inspect "<Dog named '#{name}'>" end end def test_inside_a_method_self_refers_to_the_containing_object fido = Dog7.new("Fido") fidos_self = fido.get_self assert_equal <Dog named 'Fido'>, fidos_self end So, I'm trying to make the first half of the assert_equal evaluate to the second half (fidos_self). When I work it out in irb, fidos_self returns <Dog named 'Fido'>, but I keep receiving a syntax error for that answer. I've seen this similar post: Ruby Koans: Where are the quotes in this return value?, but his solution (putting fido instead of <Dog named 'Fido'>) causes my rake to abort, saying the stack level is too deep. This is driving me nuts. What am I missing here?

    Technologies involved: ASP.NET Web-forms Javascript (jQuery for instance) Case To make it clearer let's give the Stackoverflow Users list as an example. This list can be manipulated at client-side. I can search, page and so forth. So obviously we would need to call jQuery.ajax to retrieve the HTML of each page given a search. Alright. Now this leaves me with the first question: What is the best way to render the response for the jQuery.ajax at server-side? I can't use templates I suppose, so the most obvious solution I think is to create the HTML tags as server-controls and render them as the result of an ASHX request? Is this is best approach? Nice. That solved we have yet another problem: When the user first enters the Authors List the first list page should already come from the server completely rendered alright? Of course we could render the first page as well as an ajax call but I don't think it's better. This time I CAN use templates to render the list but this template couldn't be reused in case 1. What do I do? Now the final question: Now we have 2 rendering strategies: 1) Client and 2) Server. How do I reuse code for the 2 renderings? What are the best pratices for solving these problems?

    The amount of email I receive sometime it is impossible for me to answer every email. Nonetheless I try to answer pretty much every email I receive. However, quite often I receive such questions in email that I have no answer to them because either emails are not complete or they are out of my domain expertise. In recent times I received one email which had only one or two lines but indeed attracted my attention to it. The question was bit vague but it indeed made me think. The answer was not straightforward so I had to keep on writing the answer as I remember it. However, after writing the answer I do not feel satisfied. Let me put this question in front of you and see if we all can come up with a comprehensive answer. Question: I am beginner with SQL Server. I have one query, it sometime returns a result and sometime it does not return me the result. Where should I start looking for a solution and what kind of information I should send to you so you can help me with solving. I have no clue, please guide me. Well, if you read the question, it is indeed incomplete and it does not contain much of the information at all. I decided to help him and here is the answer, which I started to compose. Answer: As there are not much information in the original question, I am not confident what will solve your problem. However, here are the few things which you can try to look at and see if that solves your problem. Check parameter which is passed to the query. Is the parameter changing at various executions? Check connection string – is there some kind of logic around it? Do you have a non-deterministic component in your query logic? (In other words – does your result is based on current date time or any other time based function?) Are you facing time out while running your query? Is there any error in error log? What is the business logic in your query? Do you have all the valid permissions to all the objects used in the query? My directory structure look like this: / HEADER.html README.html /stackoverflow/ /stackoverflow/.htaccess .htaccess ServerSignature Off Options +Indexes HeaderName /HEADER.html IndexIgnore HEADER.html ReadmeName /README.html IndexIgnore /README.html IndexOptions +FancyIndexing AddCharset UTF-8 .txt IndexIgnore *.xml IndexIgnore *.php My primary directory is /stackoverflow/, when I navigate to this directory via browser I have included HEADER.html and README.html on every site/directories under /stackoverflow/, this works fine. I added some php code to my HEADER.html (which is in the root directory / ), I am trying to add to htaccess: AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .php .htm This not working, I think because the HEADER.html is in the root. If I try add the AddType... to the /.htaccess (and not to the /stackoverflow/.htaccess) it is overwriting my /stackoverflow/.htaccess rules. Why? How I can add AddType rule to my /stackoverflow/.htaccess to Apache parse html file as php file?

  • SQL SERVER – Basic Calculation and PEMDAS Order of Operation

    After thinking a long time, I have decided to write about this blog post. I had no plan to create a blog post about this subject but the amount of conversation this one has created on my Facebook page, I decided to bring up a few of the question and concerns discussed on the Facebook page. There are more than 10,000 comments here so far. There are lots of discussion about what should be the answer. Well, as far as I can tell there is a big debate going on on Facebook, for educational purpose you should go ahead and read some of the comments. They are very interesting and for sure teach some new stuff. Even though some of the comments are clearly wrong they have made some good points and I believe it for sure develops some logic. Here is my take on this subject. I believe the answer is 9 as I follow PEMDAS  Order of Operation. PEMDAS stands for  parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. PEMDAS is commonly known as BODMAS in India. BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc), Division, Multiplication,  Addition and Subtraction. PEMDAS and BODMAS are almost same and both of them follow the operation order from LEFT to RIGHT. Let us try to simplify above statement using the PEMDAS or BODMAS (whatever you prefer to call). Step 1: 6 ÷ 2 (1+2) (parentheses first) Step 2: = 6 ÷ 2 * (1+2) (adding multiplication sign for further clarification) Step 3: = 6 ÷ 2* (3) (single digit in parentheses – simplify using operator) Step 4: = 6 ÷ 2 * 3 (Remember next Operation should be LEFT to RIGHT) Step 5: = 3 * 3 (because 6 ÷ 2 = 3; remember LEFT to RIGHT) Step 6: = 9 (final answer) Some often find Step 4 confusing and often ended up multiplying 2 and 3 resulting Step 5 to be 6 ÷ 6, this is incorrect because in this case we did not follow the order of LEFT to RIGHT. When we do not follow the order of operation from LEFT to RIGHT we end up with the answer 1 which is incorrect. Let us see what SQL Server returns as a result. I executed following statement in SQL Server Management Studio SELECT 6/2*(1+2) It is clear that SQL Server also thinks that the answer should be 9. Let us go ahead and ask Google what will be the answer of above question in Google I have searched for the following term: 6/2(1+2) The result also says the answer should be 9. If you want a further reference here is a great video which describes why the answer should be 9 and not 1. And here is a fantastic conversation on Google Groups. I'm just wondering if there are any available solutions to accomplish the same effect of auto-completion that SO uses for entering tags. There are plugins which can handle one word but I haven't seen any that handles multiple words. Also, I hear JQuery is hosted on google code. Is it a good or bad idea to link directly from that?

    My company is about to hire .NET developers. We work on a variety of .NET platforms: ASP.NET, Compact Framework, Windowsforms, Web Services. I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced. So, my question is: What questions do you think should a good .NET programmer be able to respond? I'd also see it as a checklist for myself, in order to see where my own deficits are (there are many...). *UPDATE: It want to make clear that we're not testing only for .NET knowledge, and that problem solving capabilities and general programming skills are even more important to us.
