• Postfix SMTP server down on Ubuntu

  I have a Plesk server running Postfix on Ubuntu 10.04 and the SMTP service on port 25 is down. When I stop and then start postfix the server comes up only for a minute and goes down again. I have checked the load on the server and it is low as shown: *top - 04:29:33 up 19 days, 3:25, 4 users, load average: 1.47, 1.78, 2.34 Tasks: 936 total, 1 running, 935 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 86.6%id, 11.7%wa, 0.6%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6110496k total, 6072988k used, 37508k free, 251244k buffers Swap: 12000544k total, 95264k used, 11905280k free, 4370432k cached* IMAP clients are not experiencing a problem and there are no issues with receiving emails for both POP or IMAP. Only SMTP (port 25) is a problem. If I ask clients to use the submission port (587) messages are delivered. netstat -lnt shows the following results , so its not a port issue. tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0: LISTEN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8443 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN*

• Have SSIS' differing type systems ever caused you problems?

  One thing that has always infuriated me about SSIS is the fact that every package has three different type systems; to give you an idea of what I am talking about consider the following: The SSIS dataflow's type system is made up of types called DT_*  (e.g. DT_STR, DT_I4) The SSIS variable type system is based on .Net datatypes (e.g. String, Int32) The types available for Execute SQL Task's parameters are based on something else - I don't exactly know what (e.g. VARCHAR, LONG) Speaking euphemistically ... this is not an optimum situation (were I not speaking euphemistically I would be a lot ruder) and hence I have submitted a suggestion to Connect at [SSIS] Consolidate three type systems into one requesting that it be remedied. This accompanying blog post is not however a request for votes (though that would be nice); the reason is actually subtler than that. Let me explain. I have been submitting bugs and suggestions pertaining to SSIS for years and have, so far, submitted over 200 Connect items. If that experience has taught me anything it is this - Connect items are not generally actioned because they are considered "nice to have". No, SSIS Connect items get actioned because they cause customers grief and if I am perfectly honest I must admit that, other than being a bit gnarly, SSIS' three type system architecture has never knowingly caused me any significant problems. The reason for this blog post is to ask if any reader out there has ever encountered any problems on account of SSIS' three type systems or have you, like me, never found them to be a problem? Errors or performance degredation caused by implicit type conversions would, I believe, present a strong case for getting this situation remedied in a future version of SSIS so if you HAVE encountered such problems I would encourage you to leave a comment on the Connect submission accordingly. • securing server to server http post

  Website is developed on JSF, Servlet, using apache web server. In my website, I accept data submission from few restricted websites using HTTP POST method. We exchange some secure key to ensure that correct source is sending data. But is there any way to ensure that the data is submitted from specific domain / IP address only? In application level I can check request.header('Referer') , but some proxy or firewall might hide the referer. Can this configuration done on firewall or webserver level to authenticate server to server communication? Eg. Say my website is a payment gateway website, integrated with www.abc.com. I want only abc.com to submit data. So a user using abc.com should be able to submit data to my website only through abc.com, and not any other website.

• Elementary OS boots to a terminal (other OS) [on hold]

  Im new to this site, please forgive me if I missed some posting protocol of some sort. I am attempting to install Luna on my samsung s2 laptop (a8 amd radeon 7640g) and when I click on try luna, it just pulls up a terminal after the insignia (curvy E). When I install it, same issue. • Sitemap structure for network of subdomains

  I am working on a project that's a network of 2 domains (domain.gr & domain.com.cy) of subdomains similar to Hubpages [each user gets a profile under a different subdomain & there is a personal blog for that user as well] and I think there is something wrong with our sitemap submission. Sometimes it takes weeks in order a new profiles to get indexed. We make use of one Webmasters account in order to manage all network and we don't want to create different accounts for each subdomain since there are more than 1000 already. According to this post http://goo.gl/KjMCjN, I end up on a structure of 5 sitemaps with the following structure : 1st sitemap will be for indexing the others. 2nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.gr 3nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.com.cy 4th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.gr - news sitemap http://goo.gl/8A8S9f 5th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.com.cy - news sitemap again Now my questions: Should we create news sitemaps or just list all post in 2nd & 3rd sitemap? Does links ordering has anything to do? Eg: Most recent user created be first in sitemap or doesn't make any different and we just need to make sure that lastmod date is correct? Does anyone guess how Hubpages submit their sitemap in Webmasters so maybe we could follow there way? Any alternative or better way to index this kind of schema? PS: Our network is multi language - Greek & English are available. We make use of hreflang tags on the head of each page to separate country target of each version.

• Mails bounce because of invalid character ('@') in username

  I have a working exim setup with virtual users, working alright, except for when I try to send email to certain servers. These servers reject my emails because of #5.1.3 Invalid character ('@') in username. The offending header parts seem to be: Return-path: <"[email protected]"@smtp.example.com> and ...(envelope-from <"[email protected]"@smtp.example.com>)... The problem is that I cannot find where and why the usernames are being generated like this. My router for submission is: dnslookup: driver = dnslookup domains = ! +local_domains transport = remote_smtp ignore_target_hosts = 0.0.0.0 : 127.0.0.0/8 no_more And the respective transport: remote_smtp: driver = smtp What can be producing this problem?

• beginner - best way to do a 'Confirm' page? [closed]

  I am a beginning web app developer, wondering about the best way to implement a "Confirm Page" upon form submission. I have heard that it's best for the script that a form POSTs to to be implemented by handling the POST data and then redirecting to another page, so the user isn't directly viewing the page that was POSTed to. My question is about the best way to implement a "Confirm before data save" page. Do I Have my form POST to a script, which marshals the data, puts in a GET, and redirects to the confirm page, which unmarshals and displays the data in another form, where the user can then either confirm (which causes another POST to a script that actually saves the data) or deny (which causes the user to be redirected back to the original form, with their input added)? Have my form POST directly to the confirm page, which is displayed to the user and then, like #1, gives the user the option to confirm or deny? Have my form GET the confirm page, which then does the expected behavior? I feel like there is a common-sense answer to this question that I am just not getting.

• VS 11 Beta merge tool is awesome, except for resovling conflicts

  If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11.  They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010.  There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge.Basically the problem with the new VS 11 Beta merge tool is that when you are resolving conflicts after performing a merge, you cannot tell what changes were made in each file where the code is conflicting.  Was the conflicting code added, deleted, or modified in the source and target branches?  I don't know (without explicitly opening up the history of both the source and target files), and the merge tool doesn't tell me.  In my opinion this is a huge fail on the part of the designers/developers of the merge tool, as it actually forces me to either spend an extra minute for every conflict to view the source and target file history, or to go back to use the merge tool in VS 2010 to properly assess which changes I should take.I submitted this as a bug to Microsoft, but they say that this is intentional by design. WHAT?! So they purposely crippled their tool in order to make it pretty and keep the look consistent with the new diff tool?  That's like purposely putting a little hole in the bottom of your cup for design reasons to make it look cool.  Sure, the cup looks cool, but I'm not going to use it if it leaks all over the place and doesn't do the job that it is intended for. Bah! but I digress.Because this bug is apparently a feature, they asked me to open up a "feature request" to have the problem fixed. Please go vote up both my bug submission and the feature request so that this tool will actually be useful by the time the final VS 11 product is released.

• Why does Ubuntu gets stuck on the loading screen?

  I've been experiencing many problem lately since I fresh installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my SONY VAIO VPCEH with Windows 7 previously installed. Sometimes when I try to boot Ubuntu, it gets stuck at loading screen. There seems to be some problem with driver (as far I can judge). Following is the log generated, when I press Esc during the boot (before the problem occurs): ... * Stopping System V initialization compatibility [ok] * Starting System V runlevel compatibility [ok] * Starting crash report submission daemon [ok] * Starting automatic crash report generation [ok] ... ... * Starting LightDM Display Manager [ok] Nothing works after that, no Esc, etc, except restart. Also I've observed the following: Inactivity of Hard-drive (Led doesn't glows). Flashing, or blinking, of Caps-lock and Scroll-lock On restart, Ubuntu seem to load successfully. However, the loading screen has somewhat basic graphics. This problem started after I installed Additional drivers: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver Also, most of the times Ubuntu loads without any problem. However, it is annoying to restart everytime it fails. So my question is: Why this happens and what is the solution?

• You Don't Want to Meet Orgad Kimchi in a Dark Alley

When I met him at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, I realized I didn't want to meet him in the wrong alleyway of Budapest after dark. Neither do old versions of Oracle Solaris, which Orgad bends to his will with as much ease as he probably bends stray tourists to his will in Budapest, Kandahar, or Dagestan. How Orgad Made Oracle Database Migrate from Oracle Solaris 8 to Oracle Solaris 11 In this article, which we liked so much we reprinted it from his blog (please don't tell him!), Orgad explains how he head-butted an Oracle Database into submission. The database thought it was safe running in Oracle Solaris 8, but Orgad dragged its whimpering carcas into Oracle Solaris 11. How'd he do that? Well, if you had met Orgad in person, you wouldn't ask that question. Because you'd know he could have simply stared at it, and the database would have migrated on its own. But Orgad didn't do that. Instead, he stuffed an Oracle Solaris 8 Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) Archiver Tool into his leather trench coat, the one with the special pockets sown in by the East German Secret Police for several Uzis and their ammo, and walked into his data center in a way that reminded the survivors of this clip from Matrix Reloaded. The Store is now open for app submissions from all developers – individuals and companies – in our supported markets, and we’ve added 82 more app submission markets! • Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 won't boot on Asus X101CH Eee PC

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 in my Asus X101CH Eee PC, using a live usb which I made using startup disk creator, replacing Ubuntu 12.04. The installation ran smoothly, but when I boot, it goes to a purple screen for a second, then a lot of text like the following shows up in sequence: Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon [OK] Stopping save kernel messages [OK] _ And the cursor just keeps blinking for hours. I can't log in. Pressing Alt + F2 did not bring me to console mode. I thought it might be a partition problem so I formatted the whole disk, by creating a new partition table using gparted in Ubuntu 12.04 live USB. I noticed that I can't try Ubuntu using 12.10 live USB either; it just went to a blank screen when I hit the 'try ubuntu' button. But the same problem arose. I even changed the pen drive for the live USB a couple of times. I happened to know that the Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail CPU in my computer is not well supported in Linux, I managed to install its drivers in Ubuntu 12.04, although the computer went blank during the installation.

  I am running a new Exchange 2007 SP1 system. I moved the mailboxes from the old Exchange 2003 server, and incoming mail is working. But outgoing mail is not working at all; even inside my domain. Lots of debugging and searching lead me to believe that the problem is that the "Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission Service" (AKA MSExchangeMailSubmission) is not running. In fact, it's not even listed in the Services list. This document (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998342.aspx) says that this service is installed by the Mailbox server role. My server is running the Mailbox role, as well as the Hub Transport and Client Access roles. How do I get this service to show up in the list, so that I can start it up? Thanks.

• Is there ever a reason to do all an object's work in a constructor?

  Let me preface this by saying this is not my code nor my coworkers' code. Years ago when our company was smaller, we had some projects we needed done that we did not have the capacity for, so they were outsourced. Now, I have nothing against outsourcing or contractors in general, but the codebase they produced is a mass of WTFs. That being said, it does (mostly) work, so I suppose it's in the top 10% of outsourced projects I've seen. As our company has grown, we've tried to take more of our development in house. This particular project landed in my lap so I've been going over it, cleaning it up, adding tests, etc etc. There's one pattern I see repeated a lot and it seems so mindblowingly awful that I wondered if maybe there is a reason and I just don't see it. The pattern is an object with no public methods or members, just a public constructor that does all the work of the object. For example, (the code is in Java, if that matters, but I hope this to be a more general question): public class Foo { private int bar; private String baz; public Foo(File f) { execute(f); } private void execute(File f) { // FTP the file to some hardcoded location, // or parse the file and commit to the database, or whatever } } If you're wondering, this type of code is often called in the following manner: for(File f : someListOfFiles) { new Foo(f); } Now, I was taught long ago that instantiated objects in a loop is generally a bad idea, and that constructors should do a minimum of work. Looking at this code it looks like it would be better to drop the constructor and make execute a public static method. I did ask the contractor why it was done this way, and the response I got was "We can change it if you want". Which was not really helpful. Anyway, is there ever a reason to do something like this, in any programming language, or is this just another submission to the Daily WTF?

• Antenna Aligner Part 6: Little Robots

  A week ago I took temporary ownership of a HTC Desire S so that I could start testing my app under Android. Support for Android was not in my original plan, but when Nomad added support for it recently, I starting thinking why not! So with some trepidation, I clicked the Build for Android button on the Nomad toolbar... nothing. Hmm... that's not right, I was expecting something to build. After a bit of faffing around I finally realised that I hadn't read the text on the Android setup page properly (yes that's right, RTFM!), and I needed a two-part application identifier, separated by a dot. I did this (not sure what the two part thing is all about, that one my list to investigate!) After making the change, the Android build worked and created the apk file. I uploaded this to the device and nervously ran it... it worked!!!  Well, more or less! So, there was not splash screen, but this was no surprise because I only have the iOS icons and splash screen in my project at the moment. What was more concerning was the compass update didn't seem to be working. I suspect this is a result of using an iOS specific option in the Phonegap compass watcher. Another thing to investigate. I've also just noticed that the css gradient background hasn't worked either... These issues aside, it was actually more successful than I was expecting, so happy days! Right, lets get Googling...   Next time: Preparing for submission to the App Store! :-)

• Changes to talk/ytalk or alternative chat in the Linux terminal

  While looking for a piece of software that provides chat between 2 Linux server users logged in the terminal, I tried talk/ytalk. Unfortuntaley it provides chat between users on separate walls (each user has its own wall) and the messages lack timestamps. Is it possible to set it up so that at least timestamps are provided? Alternatively, is there any other software that could provide one wall on which users write messages prepended with time? Simple chat with messages listed in the order of submission would be ideal: 13:05:48 [bridgekeeper@...]: What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? 13:06:28 [cascaval@...]: What do you mean? An African or European swallow? I already tried wall and write but they don't fit the bill. OS: Debian 6.0
