  • Silverlight Cream for January 11, 2011 -- #1024

    - by Dave Campbell
1,000 blogposts is quite a few, but to die-hard geeks, 1000 isn't the number... 1K is the number, and today is my 1K blogpost! I've been working up to this for at least 11 months. Way back at MIX10, I approached some vendors about an idea I had. A month ago I contacted them and others, and everyone I contacted was very generous and supportive of my idea. My idea was not to run a contest, but blog as normal, and whoever ended up on my 1K post would get some swag... and I set a cut-off at 13 posts. So... blogging normally, I had some submittals, and then ran my normal process to pick up the next posts until I hit a total of 13. To provide a distribution channel for the swag, everyone on the list, please send me your snail mail (T-shirts) and email (licenses) addresses as soon as possible.   I'd like to thank the following generous sponsors for their contributions to my fun (in alphabetic order): and Rachel Hawley for contributing 4 Silverlight control sets First Floor Software and Koen Zwikstra for contributing 13 licenses for Silverlight Spy and Sara Faatz/Jason Beres for contributing 13 licenses for Silverlight Data Visualization controls and Svetla Stoycheva for contributing T-Shirts for everyone on the post and Ina Tontcheva for contributing 13 licenses for RadControls for Silverlight + RadControls for Windows Phone and Charlene Kozlan for contributing 1 combopack standard, 2 DataGrid for Silverlight, and 2 Listbox for Silverlight Standard And now finally...in this Issue: Nigel Sampson, Jeremy Likness, Dan Wahlin, Kunal Chowdhurry, Alex Knight, Wei-Meng Lee, Michael Crump, Jesse Liberty, Peter Kuhn, Michael Washington, Tau Sick, Max Paulousky, Damian Schenkelman Above the Fold: Silverlight: "Demystifying Silverlight Dependency Properties" Dan Wahlin WP7: "Using Windows Phone Gestures as Triggers" Nigel Sampson Expression Blend: "PathListBox: making data look cool" Alex Knight From SilverlightCream.com: Using Windows Phone Gestures as Triggers Nigel Sampson blogged about WP7 Gestures, the Toolkit, and using Gestures as Triggers, and actually makes it looks simple :) Jounce Part 9: Static and Dynamic Module Management Jeremy Likness has episode 9 of his explanation of his MVVM framework, Jounce, up... and a big discussion of Modules and Module Management from a Jounce perspective. Demystifying Silverlight Dependency Properties Dan Wahlin takes a page from one of his teaching opportunities, and shares his knowledge of Dependency Properties with us... beginning with what they are, defining them in code, and demonstrating their use. Customizing Silverlight ChildWindow Style using Blend Kunal Chowdhurry has a great post up about getting your Child Windows to match the look & feel of the rest of youra app... plus a bunch of Blend goodness thrown in. PathListBox: making data look cool File this post by Alex Knight in the 'holy crap' file along with the others in this series! ... just check out that cool Ticker Style Path ListBox at the top of the blog... too cool! Web Access in Windows Phone 7 Apps Wei-Meng Lee has the 3rd part of his series on WP7 development up and in this one is discussing Web Access... I mean *discussing* it... tons of detail, code, and explanation... great post. Prevent your Silverlight XAP file from caching in your browser. Michael Crump helps relieve stress on Silverlight developers everywhere by exploring how to avoid caching of your XAP in the browser... (WPFS) MVVM Light Toolkit: Soup To Nuts Part I Jesse Liberty continues his Windows Phone from Scratch series with a new segment exploring Laurent Bugnion's MVVMLight Toolkit beginning with acquiring and installing the toolkit, then proceeds to discuss linking the View and ViewModel, the ViewModel Locator, and page navigation. Silverlight: Making a DateTimePicker Peter Kuhn attacks a problem that crops up on the forums a lot -- a DateTimePicker control for Silverlight... following the "It's so simple to build one yourself" advice, he did so, and provides the code for all of us! Windows Phone 7 Animated Button Press Michael Washington took exception to button presses that gave no visual feedback and produced a behavior that does just that. Using TweetSharp in a Windows Phone 7 app Tau Sick demonstrates using TweetSharp to put a twitter feed into a WP7 app, as he did in "Hangover Helper"... all the instructions from getting Tweeetshaprt to the code necessary. Bindable Application Bar Extensions for Windows Phone 7 Max Paulousky has a post discussing some real extensions to the ApplicationBar for WP7.. he begins with a bindable application bar by Nicolas Humann that I've missed, probably because his blog is in French... and extends it to allow using DelegateCommand. How to: Load Prism modules packaged in a separate XAP file in an OOB application Damian Schenkelman posts about Prism, AppModules in separate XAPs and running OOB... if you've tried this, you know it's a hassle.. • Telerik RadGrid doesn't display on first Page_Load but does on postback

    - by Mark
I have a page with a drop-down. Based on the selection in the drop-down, data gets loaded and populates a RadGrid. I am using a custom user control for the EditTemplate, so I can't use radGrid.DataBind(). Instead, I have to use radGrid.MasterTableView.Rebind() in association with a NeedDataSource event handler. My problem is that when I load the page initially, I populate the drop-down and automatically select a value (first item in the list) which triggers the databinding on the RadGrid. I can step through the code in debug mode and see that the grid is being populated with data, but when the page displays, it doesn't get rendered. When I then manually choose an item from the drop-down, which triggers the same grid databinding code, it displays properly the second time. How do I get it to display the grid the first time the page loads?

  • MVVM- Trigger Storyboard in the View Model in Silverlight

    - by user275561
I have a couple of Storyboards in my view that I would like to trigger from the ViewModel if possible. Is there a simple way or elegant way of doing this. Here is what I am trying to do. Person Clicks on a Button--RelayCommand (In the ViewModel), the Relay Command should then play the storyboard. Also one more thing, I would like to also trigger the storyboard animation by itself in the ViewModel without any interaction. <i:Interaction.Triggers> <i:EventTrigger EventName="MouseLeftButtonDown"> <cmd:EventToCommand Command="{Binding ButtonPress}" CommandParameterValue="RedButtonLight"> </cmd:EventToCommand> </i:EventTrigger> </i:Interaction.Triggers>

  • WPF ComboBox Binding breaks when using ControlTemplate

    - by Mitch
    I have a WPF ComboBox that has been working fine until I recently created a ControlTemplate for it to enable me to change the color of the DropDown arrow. The ComboBox still works correctly except the Bound Text value now just shows the name of the Business Object rather than the bound value. I guess that binding like Text="{Binding Path=CaseDateRange}" no longer works when using a ControlTemplate, yet the ItemsSource binding on the dropdown seems to still work fine. Can anyone offer some help with how I need to change my binding when using a ControlTemplate. The code for the ControlTemplate and ComboBox is as follows <ControlTemplate x:Key="ComboBoxControlTemplate1" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}"> <Grid x:Name="MainGrid" SnapsToDevicePixels="True"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="*"/> <ColumnDefinition MinWidth="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemParameters.VerticalScrollBarWidthKey}}" Width="0"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Popup x:Name="PART_Popup" AllowsTransparency="True" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" IsOpen="{Binding IsDropDownOpen, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" Margin="1" PopupAnimation="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemParameters.ComboBoxPopupAnimationKey}}" Placement="Bottom" OpacityMask="#FF2A3D64"> <Microsoft_Windows_Themes:SystemDropShadowChrome x:Name="Shdw" Color="Transparent" MaxHeight="{TemplateBinding MaxDropDownHeight}" MinWidth="{Binding ActualWidth, ElementName=MainGrid}"> <Border x:Name="DropDownBorder" BorderBrush="White" BorderThickness="1" CornerRadius="3" Background="{DynamicResource DialogDarkBlue}"> <ScrollViewer x:Name="DropDownScrollViewer" > <Grid RenderOptions.ClearTypeHint="Enabled"> <Canvas HorizontalAlignment="Left" Height="0" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="0"> <Rectangle x:Name="OpaqueRect" Fill="{Binding Background, ElementName=DropDownBorder}" Height="{Binding ActualHeight, ElementName=DropDownBorder}" Width="{Binding ActualWidth, ElementName=DropDownBorder}"/> </Canvas> <ItemsPresenter x:Name="ItemsPresenter" KeyboardNavigation.DirectionalNavigation="Contained" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/> </Grid> </ScrollViewer> </Border> </Microsoft_Windows_Themes:SystemDropShadowChrome> </Popup> <ToggleButton BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" IsChecked="{Binding IsDropDownOpen, Mode=TwoWay, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" Foreground="White"> <ToggleButton.Style> <Style TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}"> <Setter Property="OverridesDefaultStyle" Value="True"/> <Setter Property="IsTabStop" Value="False"/> <Setter Property="Focusable" Value="False"/> <Setter Property="ClickMode" Value="Press"/> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}"> <Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ButtonChrome x:Name="Chrome" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" RenderMouseOver="{TemplateBinding IsMouseOver}" RenderPressed="{TemplateBinding IsPressed}" SnapsToDevicePixels="True"> <Grid HorizontalAlignment="Right" Width="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemParameters.VerticalScrollBarWidthKey}}"> <Path x:Name="Arrow" Data="M0,0L3.5,4 7,0z" Fill="White" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Margin="3,1,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Center"/> </Grid> </Microsoft_Windows_Themes:ButtonChrome> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="True"> <Setter Property="RenderPressed" TargetName="Chrome" Value="True"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Fill" TargetName="Arrow" Value="#FFAFAFAF"/> </Trigger> </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </ToggleButton.Style> </ToggleButton> <ContentPresenter ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItemTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItem}" ContentStringFormat="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItemStringFormat}" HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" IsHitTestVisible="False" Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" VerticalAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/> </Grid> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> <Trigger Property="HasDropShadow" SourceName="PART_Popup" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Margin" TargetName="Shdw" Value="0,0,5,5"/> <Setter Property="Color" TargetName="Shdw" Value="#71000000"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="HasItems" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Height" TargetName="DropDownBorder" Value="95"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.GrayTextBrushKey}}"/> <Setter Property="Background" Value="#FFF4F4F4"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="IsGrouping" Value="True"> <Setter Property="ScrollViewer.CanContentScroll" Value="False"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="CanContentScroll" SourceName="DropDownScrollViewer" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Canvas.Top" TargetName="OpaqueRect" Value="{Binding VerticalOffset, ElementName=DropDownScrollViewer}"/> <Setter Property="Canvas.Left" TargetName="OpaqueRect" Value="{Binding HorizontalOffset, ElementName=DropDownScrollViewer}"/> </Trigger> </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> And the ComboBox is <ComboBox x:Name="cboSelectedCase" Text="{Binding Path=CaseDateRange}" DisplayMemberPath="CaseDateRange" SelectedValuePath="CaseID" Template="{DynamicResource ComboBoxControlTemplate1}" />

  • WPF TextBox trigger to clear Text

    - by PaN1C_Showt1Me
Hi ! I have many TextBox controls and I'm trying to write a style that clears the Text property when the Control is disabled. I don't want to have Event Handlers in code behind. I wrote this: <Style TargetType="{x:Type TextBox}"> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Text" Value="{x:Null}" /> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> The problem is that if the TextBox is defined like: <TextBox Text={Binding Whatever} /> then the trigger does not work (probably because it's bound) How to overcome this problem?

  • Why isn't TextBox.Text in WPF animatable?

    - by cplotts
Ok, I have just run into something that is really catching me off-guard. I was helping a fellow developer with a couple of unrelated questions and in his project he was animating text into some TextBlock(s). So, I went back to my desk and recreated the project (in order to answer his questions), but I accidentally used TextBox instead of TextBlock. My text wasn't animating at all! (A lot of help, I was!) Eventually, I figured out that his xaml was using TextBlock and mine was using TextBox. What is interesting, is that Blend wasn't creating key frames when I was using TextBox. So, I got it to work in Blend using TextBlock(s) and then modified the xaml by hand, converting the TextBlock(s) into TextBox(es). When I ran the project, I got the following error: InvalidOperationException: '(0)' Storyboard.TargetProperty path contains nonanimatable property 'Text'. Well, it seems as if Blend was smart enough to know that ... and not generate the key frames in the animation (it would just modify the value directly on the TextBox). +1 for Blend. So, the question became: why isn't TextBox.Text animatable? The usual answer is that the particular property you are animating isn't a DependencyProperty. But, this isn't the case, TextBox.Text is a DependencyProperty. So, now I am bewildered! Why can't you animate TextBox.Text? Let me include some xaml to illustrate the problem. The following xaml works ... but uses TextBlock(s). <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" x:Class="TextBoxTextQuestion.MainWindow" x:Name="Window" Title="MainWindow" Width="640" Height="480" > <Window.Resources> <Storyboard x:Key="animateTextStoryboard"> <StringAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="(TextBlock.Text)" Storyboard.TargetName="textControl"> <DiscreteStringKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:1" Value="Goodbye"/> </StringAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> </Window.Resources> <Window.Triggers> <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="FrameworkElement.Loaded"> <BeginStoryboard Storyboard="{StaticResource animateTextStoryboard}"/> </EventTrigger> </Window.Triggers> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"> <TextBlock x:Name="textControl" Text="Hello" FontFamily="Calibri" FontSize="32"/> <TextBlock Text="World!" Margin="0,25,0,0" FontFamily="Calibri" FontSize="32"/> </StackPanel> </Grid> </Window> The following xaml does not work and uses TextBox.Text: <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" x:Class="TextBoxTextQuestion.MainWindow" x:Name="Window" Title="MainWindow" Width="640" Height="480" > <Window.Resources> <Storyboard x:Key="animateTextStoryboard"> <StringAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="(TextBox.Text)" Storyboard.TargetName="textControl"> <DiscreteStringKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:1" Value="Goodbye"/> </StringAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> </Window.Resources> <Window.Triggers> <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="FrameworkElement.Loaded"> <BeginStoryboard Storyboard="{StaticResource animateTextStoryboard}"/> </EventTrigger> </Window.Triggers> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"> <TextBox x:Name="textControl" Text="Hello" FontFamily="Calibri" FontSize="32"/> <TextBox Text="World!" • How to bind Checked event for radio button in WPF?

  • WPF Listbox - Empty List Display Message

I have tried the following code and can't get it to work, so think that I must be doing it wrong. <ListBox x:Name="lstItems" ItemsSource="{Binding ListItems}"> </ListBox> <TextBlock Margin="4" FontStyle="Italic" FontSize="12" Text="List is empty" Visibility="Collapsed"> <TextBlock.Style> <Style TargetType="{x:Type TextBlock}"> <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding ElementName=lstItems, Path=Items.Count}" Value="0"> <Setter Property="Visibility" Value="Visible" /> </DataTrigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </TextBlock.Style> </TextBlock>

  • How to fetch the data from binary log file and insert in our desired table in MySQL?

    - by Parth
How to fetch the data from binary log file and insert in our desired table in MySQL? I am on my way of scripting a PHP code for Audit Trail, in this I encountered a situation that if there will be new table created then I will not be available with triggers for that new table and hence no tracking could be done for that, so if I code it to create three new triggers for this new table, then how will get the last change done in this table? Hence I found that Binary Log File can be helpfull for me in this case, to fetch the last change for this new table and insert it in tracking table... BUT HOW????

Why am i using over 80% CPU when just hovering some links? • WPF Open Combobox popup on Focus or GotFocus

    - by ashish.magroria
    Hi, I am trying to open the combobox popup when it is focused using Style/Event Trigger I used the following code in my Combobox control Template: <ControlTemplate x:Key="ComboBoxTemplate" TargetType="{x:Type ComboBox}"> <Grid > <ToggleButton Grid.Column="2" Template="{DynamicResource ComboBoxToggleButton}" x:Name="ToggleButton" Focusable="false" IsChecked="{Binding Path=IsDropDownOpen, Mode=TwoWay, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" ClickMode="Press"/> <ContentPresenter HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="3,3,23,3" x:Name="ContentSite" VerticalAlignment="Center" Content="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItem}" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding SelectionBoxItemTemplate}" ContentTemplateSelector="{TemplateBinding ItemTemplateSelector}" IsHitTestVisible="False"/> <TextBox Visibility="Hidden" Template="{DynamicResource ComboBoxTextBox}" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="3,3,23,3" x:Name="PART_EditableTextBox" Style="{x:Null}" VerticalAlignment="Center" Focusable="True" Background="Transparent" IsReadOnly="{TemplateBinding IsReadOnly}"/> <Popup IsOpen="{TemplateBinding IsDropDownOpen}" Placement="Bottom" x:Name="Popup" Focusable="False" AllowsTransparency="True" PopupAnimation="Slide"> <Grid MaxHeight="{TemplateBinding MaxDropDownHeight}" MinWidth="{TemplateBinding ActualWidth}" x:Name="DropDown" SnapsToDevicePixels="True"> <Border x:Name="DropDownBorder" Background="{DynamicResource ShadeBrush}" BorderBrush="{DynamicResource SolidBorderBrush}" BorderThickness="1"/> <ScrollViewer Margin="4,6,4,6" SnapsToDevicePixels="True" HorizontalScrollBarVisibility="Auto" VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Auto" CanContentScroll="True"> <StackPanel IsItemsHost="True" KeyboardNavigation.DirectionalNavigation="Contained"/> </ScrollViewer> </Grid> </Popup> </Grid> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> **<Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"> <Setter Property="IsOpen" Value="True" TargetName="Popup"/> </Trigger>** </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> But nothing happens with this code. So I trid the following Event trigger in ControlTemplate.Triggers <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="UIElement.GotFocus"> <BeginStoryboard> <Storyboard > <BooleanAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="Popup" Storyboard.TargetProperty="IsOpen" FillBehavior="HoldEnd"> <DiscreteBooleanKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00" Value="True" /> </BooleanAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> </BeginStoryboard> </EventTrigger> <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="UIElement.LostFocus"> <BeginStoryboard> <Storyboard > <BooleanAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="Popup" Storyboard.TargetProperty="IsOpen" FillBehavior="HoldEnd"> <DiscreteBooleanKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00" Value="False" /> </BooleanAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> </BeginStoryboard> </EventTrigger> Now this helps open the popup on focus, but when I select any item from dropdown the pop up doesnt disappear as usual; it stays open. it closes only after I click somewhere else in the window. Can someone please suggest the proper way to do this Thanks in advance

  • WPF Visibility of a UI element based on combo selection

    - by tim
    Trying to show a label only when a certain item in a combo is selected. Code should pretty much explain it. <ComboBox Name="comboMyCombo"> <ComboBoxItem>Don't show the label</ComboBoxItem> <ComboBoxItem>Show the label</ComboBoxItem> </ComboBox> <Label Visibility="Collapsed">This is my label <Label.Style> <Style> <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding ElementName=comboMyCombo, Path=SelectedValue}" Value="Show the label"> <Setter Property="Label.Visibility" Value="Visible"></Setter> </DataTrigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </Label.Style> </Label>

  • xaml nested class path designer issue

    - by Vlad Bezden
Hi, I have nested class public class Enums { public enum WindowModeEnum { Edit, New } } In my xaml I reference code: <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding WindowMode}" Value="{x:Static Types1:Enums+WindowModeEnum.Edit}"> <Setter Property="Visibility" Value="Collapsed" /> </DataTrigger> </Style.Triggers> Code compiles and runs properly, however I can't open xaml code in design window. I am getting following error: Type 'Types1:Enums+WindowModeEnum' was not found. at MS.Internal.Metadata.ExposedTypes.ValueSerializers.StaticMemberDocumentValueSerializer.ConvertToDocumentValue(ITypeMetadata type, String value, IServiceProvider documentServices) at MS.Internal.Design.DocumentModel.DocumentTrees.Markup.XamlMarkupExtensionPropertyBase.get_Value() at MS.Internal.Design.DocumentModel.DocumentTrees.DocumentPropertyWrapper.get_Value() at MS.Internal.Design.DocumentModel.DocumentTrees.InMemory.InMemoryDocumentProperty..ctor(DocumentProperty property, InMemoryDocumentItem item) at MS.Internal.Design.DocumentModel.DocumentTrees.InMemory.InMemoryDocumentItem.SetUpItem(DocumentItem item) Same error exist in VS2008, VS2010. Does anybody has any idea, how to deal with it so I can open window in design mode. Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Vlad.

  • Historical / auditable database

    - by Mark
Hi all, This question is related to the schema that can be found in one of my other questions here. Basically in my database I store users, locations, sensors amongst other things. All of these things are editable in the system by users, and deletable. However - when an item is edited or deleted I need to store the old data; I need to be able to see what the data was before the change. There are also non-editable items in the database, such as "readings". They are more of a log really. Readings are logged against sensors, because its the reading for a particular sensor. If I generate a report of readings, I need to be able to see what the attributes for a location or sensor was at the time of the reading. Basically I should be able to reconstruct the data for any point in time. Now, I've done this before and got it working well by adding the following columns to each editable table: valid_from valid_to edited_by If valid_to = 9999-12-31 23:59:59 then that's the current record. If valid_to equals valid_from, then the record is deleted. However, I was never happy with the triggers I needed to use to enforce foreign key consistency. I can possibly avoid triggers by using the extension to the "PostgreSQL" database. This provides a column type called "period" which allows you to store a period of time between two dates, and then allows you to do CHECK constraints to prevent overlapping periods. That might be an answer. I am wondering though if there is another way. I've seen people mention using special historical tables, but I don't really like the thought of maintainling 2 tables for almost every 1 table (though it still might be a possibility). Maybe I could cut down my initial implementation to not bother checking the consistency of records that aren't "current" - i.e. only bother to check constraints on records where the valid_to is 9999-12-31 23:59:59. Afterall, the people who use historical tables do not seem to have constraint checks on those tables (for the same reason, you'd need triggers). Does anyone have any thoughts about this? PS - the title also mentions auditable database. In the previous system I mentioned, there is always the edited_by field. This allowed all changes to be tracked so we could always see who changed a record. Not sure how much difference that might make. Thanks.

  • How would you audit ASP.NET Membership tables, while recording what user made the changes?

    - by Pete
Using a trigger-based approach to audit logging, I am recording the history of changes made to tables in the database. The approach I'm using (with a static sql server login) to record which user made the change involves running a stored procedure at the outset of each database connection. The triggers use this username when recording the audit rows. (The triggers are provided by the product OmniAudit.) However, the ASP.NET Membership tables are accessed primarily through the Membership API. I need to pass in the current user's identity when the Membership API opens its database connection. I tried subclassing MembershipProvider but I cannot access the underlying database connection. It seems like this would be a common problem. Does anyone know of any hooks we can access when the ASP.NET Membership makes its database connection?

  • Recording SELECT statements in PostgreSQL 8.4

    - by David Anniwell
Hi All I've got a table which contains sensitive data and according to data protection policy we have to keep a record of every read/write of the data including a row identifier and the user who accessed the table. The writing is no issue using triggers but obviously triggers aren't supported for SELECT statements. What's the best method of doing this? I've looked at rules but I can't get them to INSERT into a table, and I've tried logging every query but this doesn't seem to log SELECT statements. Ideally for security I'd like to keep the log within a table on the database but logging to a file is fine too. Thanks David

  • Integrating Pentaho/Talend/etc. with an OR Mapper

    - by DaDaDom
We have an application (Java) with an own OR mapper. Within this system we have what can be compared to Hibernate's interceptors (we call it triggers): Do specific actions just before saving data in the database, after it's deleted and so on. The underlying database is MySQL. Now we would like to use tools such as Pentaho Data Integration or Talend to convert data to put it into our system. It's no problem to do that directly on the SQL level, but by doing so we loose the built-in power of our triggers. Is there a way to somehow integrate any of the Data Integration solutions into our existing application? It would be great if there was a way to write into instances of our classes instead of writing into the database directly. Any hints welcome :-)
