  • Fix overscan in Linux with Intel graphics Vizio HDTV

    I am connecting my server to my HDTV so that I can conveniently display it there. My VIZIO HDTV cuts off all 4 edges. I already realize it is not optimal to be running a GUI on a server; this server will not have much external traffic so I prefer it for convenience. I have already spent countless hours searching for a fix, but all I could find required an ATI or NVIDIA graphics card, or didn’t work. In Windows, the Intel driver has a setting for underscan, though it seems only to be available by a glitch. Here’s my specs: Ubuntu Linux (Quantal 12.10) (Likely to switch to Arch) This is a home server computer, with KDE for managing(for now, at least) Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 from Ivy Bridge Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 My monitors: Dell LCD monitor Vizio VX37L_HDTV10A 37" on HDMI input I have tried all of the following from both HDMI?HDMI and DVI?HDMI cables connected to the ports on my motherboard: Setting properties in xrandr Making sure drivers are all up to date Trying several different modes The TV was “cheap”; max resolution 1080i. I am able to get a 1920x1080 modeline, in both GNU/Linux and Windows, without difficulty. There is no setting in the menu to fix the overscan (I have tried all of them, I realize it’s not always called overscan). I have been in the service menu for the TV, which still does not contain an option to fix it. No aspect ratio settings, etc. The TV has a VGA connector but I am unsure if it would fix it, as I don’t have a VGA cable long enough, and am not sure it would get me the 1920x1080 resolution which I want. Using another resolution does not fix the problem. I tried custom modelines with the dimensions of my screen’s viewable area, but it wouldn’t let me use them. Ubuntu apparently doesn’t automatically generate an xorg.conf file for use. I read somewhere that modifying it may help solve it. I tried X -configure several times(with reboots, etc.) but it consistently gave the following error messages: In log file: … (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Tried using 'overscan' prop in xrandr: root@xxx:/home/xxx# xrandr --output HDMI1 --set overscan off X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty) Serial number of failed request: 42 Current serial number in output stream: 42 'overscan on', 'underscan off', 'underscan on' were all also tried. Originally tried with Ubuntu 12.04, but failed and so updated to 12.10 when it was released. All software is up to date. I am not opposed to reinstalling my OS, likely will anyways (my preference being Arch).

  • Event Viewer shows service name as a truncated 8 character name

    I have written a service which logs to the Windows Event Log when it has any problems. This works fine and the service name is shown correctly in the Source column of the Event Viewer. The problem I am seeing is when my service hits some major problems like the networking layer has died etc. When this happens the event log shows errors about my service but the service name is shown as a truncated 8 character name. This name looks to be that of the executable and not the service name. Is this normal behaviour for a truncated name to be show ?

  • Exchanged HDD in MacBook Pro - OSX installation disk shows prohibitory sign

    I exchanged the HDD in my 2007 MacBook Pro and removed the dvd-drive because it was making terrible noise everytime I booted the MacBook. The new HDD is a Corsair Force F120 SATA SSD. Everytime I try to launch an OSX Lion installation disk or USB stick I get the grey prohibitory sign and the machine shuts down after a while. Since I didn't format the SSD beforehand there is still Windows 7 on it. It shows the white progress bar with the message "Windows is loading files" but never finishes it. I don't want Windows on that machine, just thought this fact may be important. Any ideas what is wrong?

  • Screenshot shows black area with dual monitors on Ubuntu

    When using the built-in window screenshot function on Ubuntu (alt-printscreen) with dual monitors, a black rectangle covers about the top third of the captured window (or that area is not captured). When capturing the entire screen (printscreen), the left monitor shows the same size rectangle, but it doesn't cover the window, but pushes it down. It's as if the capture is using the smaller monitor's dimensions, and is not aware of the larger monitor.   • Reinstalled Windows XP Home, shows as XP Pro, 'invalid' errors

    We reinstalled Windows XP Home after hard drive crash. The system now shows as XP Pro and we're constantly getting 'invalid software' popups, images show in solid black. We called Microsoft, they said the serial number is valid etc. We're assuming that the pop ups are because that it is now XP Pro instead of Home. Or could it be something else? Or how can we determine what the issue is in order to correct it? Thanks for any advice on this. jb

  • VirtuaWin shows Visual Studio 2010 in all Desktops

    I'm using VirtuaWin in Windows 7 to have virtual desktop functionality and I think this program is awesome. There's one small issue, though: on the computer at work, when moving to another desktop it hides all windows in the current desktop, except any windows of Visual Studio 2010. This means that VS 2010 shows up in all desktops, while for all other windows, VirtuaWin applies the correct behavior. The strange thing is that this issue happens on one computer only; on the others I have it works OK. I have checked the Window Rules section and nothing seems strange in there. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?

  • 4TB HGST SATA drive only shows 1.62 TB in Windows Server 2012

    I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller. If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB. However when I boot Windows (on a separate RAID 1 array), the 4TB drives show up individually in disk manager as 2x 1.62TB drives. I could use Windows 2012 to set up software RAID 1, but when I set the BIOS back to 2x individual drives, they still show up in Windows as 2x 1.62TB drives. How do I access the full capacity of these drives? Thanks, Brian Bulaw

    Arch Linux shows a blinking cursor instead of a booting installer. I ran sudo dd if=archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso of=/dev/sdb1 and checked the MD5 sums. I tried to boot it on two different PCs and got the same result: instead of booting GRUB — or anything useful, for that matter — it just showed a blinking cursor at the top left corner of the screen. The machines became unresponsive to any kind of input, the flash drive LED didn't seem to blink or shiver at all and there seemed to be no other activity whatsoever. I tried using another flash drive, but the machine completely ignored it, booting Windows "normally."

    Hi, I am trying to setup a load balanced web server scenario, using two HAproxy load balancers and two debian web servers following this guide http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-a-high-availability-load-balancer-with-haproxy-keepalived-on-debian-lenny. the setup is working but the results of simple performance benchmarking is not what I expected. I tried apache benchmark tool to send lots of requests to servers (one time directly testing one of the web servers and the other time testing through the load balancer) using the command "ab -n 1000000 -c 500 http://IP/index.html", but the test results shows better performance for the single server without load balancer. can any one tell me if I'm going wrong on some thing?

I pressed shift 5 times and it makes a sound. I already removed battery and restarted it, but still the same. I can go to safe mode and scanned thru there. Still, desktop won't show up. Don't know what else to check?

    We have a situation now on prod in sharepoint 2007 based intranet platform and it shows thousands of records under people_dl_import category with format spsimport://?$$dl$$/domain1/domain2/domain3/ Also import was not stopping and added millions of records in database and was on verge of disk full. On other servers like dev we have very less data in this category and format is also like spsimport://doaminname?$$dl$$?... which is good and has only 6000 rows and in prod its 2 millions Crawled under people_dl_import category. I need to know the cause of this garbage data and how to fix it. I tried resetting content source and I will do full import in this weekend to see if this garbage data gets cleared. Any idea on cause for thiss issue?

    The Software Update tool shows already installed updates. I already installed them a few times, clicking either the 'Update All' button or the indivisual 'Update' buttons. The apps are: Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Skitch, Evernote, Fotor. 'Check for unfinished downloads' reports all downloads have finished. Signing out and back in and reloading didn't help. $ sudo softwareupdate -ia Password: Software Update Tool Copyright 2002-2012 Apple Inc. Finding available software No updates are available. Googling didn't help. How can I fix the GUI tool so it updates its status? OSX 10.9.3

    As the title says, the mpstat command, executed on Slack 13.0 continuously shows almost no processor utilization of any sort. In fact none of the output ever seems to change at all. The system is dual processor board with two hyperthreaded P4 Xeons.     I'm looking for a media manager that will display and play movies and TV shows and will read data included in mp4 and m4v files. So far I've looked at XBMC, Moovida and Boxee and all of these seem to keep their own separate database or XML files for reading and storing tag information. I also looked at Banshee because of this answer, but it didn't read my tags. Banshee is also geared towards music videos instead of actual movies and TV shows. So I'm looking for software that Displays and plays movies and TV Shows Reads mp4 and m4v tags Preferably something with bulk import (i.e., I don't want to add 1,000 items to a new library) Bonus if it also has a tag editor Bonus if it's an XBMC extension

  • Excel shows different files in same window

    In a browser, I downloaded an Excel spreadsheet and it displayed a dialog box asking what to do with it, so I selected "Open in Excel". Then I downloaded another Excel spreadsheet and opened that one in Excel as well. My taskbar shows 2 Excel icons, but there's only one Excel window. When I use the taskbar to switch between the spreadsheets, each one replaces the other in the Excel window. How can I get 2 Excel windows - one for each spreadsheet? I am running Windows 7 with Excel 2010.

  • Windows shows incorrect free space on Raid 10 volume

    I have 4 1TB hard drives in RAID 1+0 configuration. Theoretically, I should have ~2TB of available space. Windows says the drive has a total size of 1.81 TB, which I'm fine with. As far as files on the volume go, I used WinDirStat to determine that I have 552.8GB of files on the volume. This means that I should have somewhere around 1.3TB minimum of free space. Yet Windows shows the drive as only having 492GB of free space. Are there hidden files somewhere that I can't see (I have show hidden files/folders turned on)? Does Windows not recognize that old files have been deleted? Is there any way to correct this problem?

  • Access router set up as a bridge behind another router

    I have a problem my ISP is refusing to help me with, even though they put up the whole system. Specifications: There's a Thomson TG784 router through which the internet comes in to the building, Behind that (for some reason) is a Juniper NetScreen 5XT - 105 Firewall/Router? which leads to an AMX nxa-enet24 switch that carries the connections all over the building and a series of Apple AirPorts for wifi. Problem: The first router (Thomson) is required for ipTV (by Elion). The tv or ipTV box has to be connected straight to the Thomson router. My service provider cannot see the Thomson router from their side, but see the Juniper, so we might think the Thomson has been configured as a bridge. I need a way to access the Thomson router and see it's configurations, because currently, when connecting a Samsung tv to that router (with elion app for ipTV viewing) or even a computer, it cannot access the internet and even if it could, it would update the Thomson router software, losing it's configurations which I need to preserve. I'm unable to find out the Thomson routers ip address to connect to it, and when directly conencting with a cat5 cable, it doesn't give me an ip address.   • VPN still working after rebooting without client - DrayTek client shows "No Connection"

    My home network is a simple router + pc's setup, nothing fancy - the router has DHCP enabled for 192.168.0.X (255.255.255.0) and my PC picks up the address 192.168.0.82. There are no devices on my local lan in the 192.168.1.x range. On my pc i have the DrayTek VPN client, and a company i do some work for has a DrayTek Vigor router. The VPN client establishes a VPN to that remote company using an IPSec Tunnel (PreShared Key - no encryption) Last night i shut down my pc with the VPN tunnel still connected, when i turned my computer on this morning i accidentally clicked an RDP shortcut to 192.168.1.2 (a host in the remote company) and to my amazement it connected?!? My Question: Can an IPSec tunnel stay up some how after a reboot without use of the VPN client? (well, i can clearly see that it can) - where in windows is there visibility of this? how does my machine know where to route the packets? I appreciate any insights & thoughts!

    [SBS2003SP2] If i read the exhange log it shows the backup contains no files just folders and the total size seems to be Ok. I i try to restore the folders are empty... But the 14 files that where backupped dissapeared in the verification log?! Other backups on the same medium turned out to be fine. Any idea what's wrong here?     I have a Samsung 6 series LCD TV which can connect to internet by LAN. When I connect my TV to my Windows 7 laptop which get its internet from AS share it, it can connect to the Internet. My TV can connect to YouTube, but in my country this site is filtered. I want to use an antifilter(proxy) program to bypass the filtering. The problem is the TV does not recognize the proxy port or program. How can I configure the TV or the network to use the proxy?
