    I was thinking about hosting my private project on my server (i may use 'gitolite') and have a copy on my local machine as backup (git clone then automated git fetch every few minute). I want to know what happens if there is a bug gitolite or somewhere else on my server and the source code and git repository has been tampered with? Will my backup also be corrupted? will i easily be able to revert the source using the history?

  • Accidently system timer speed up

    Laptop: Acer 5750zg I've found this issue in latest Ubuntu versions (13.04, 14.04) in all desktop environment. When I'm typing something in text field, randomly I get ~5..20 same symbols and everything speed up. It's happen few times per one minute and start from normal speed, slowly rising to super boost animation and other processes like CPU monitor, clock, window animation, etc. I think something wrong with system clock. Please help to figure out how to fix it.

  • Stange stream of HTTP GET requests in apache logs, from amazon ec2 instances

    I just had a look at my apache logs, and I see a lot of very similar requests: GET / HTTP/1.1 User-Agent: curl/7.24.0 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu) libcurl/7.24.0 \ NSS/3.13.5.0 zlib/1.2.5 libidn/1.18 libssh2/1.2.2 Host: [my_domain].org Accept: */* there's a steady stream of those, about 2 or 3 per minute; they all request the same domain and resource (there are slight variations in user agent version numbers); they come form a lot of different IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, in blocs that belong to amazon ec2 (in Singapore, Japan, Ireland and the USA). I tried to look for an explanation online, or even just similar stories, but couldn't find any. Has anyone got a clue as to what this is? It doesn't look malicious per say, but it's just annoying me, and I couldn't find any more information about it. I first suspected it could be a bot checking if my server is still up, but: I don't remember subscribing to such a service; why would it need to check my site twice every minute; why doesn't it use a clearly identifying fqdn. Or, should I send this question to amazon, via their abuse contact? Thanks!

  • "Unable to open MRTG log file" error with nagios and mrtg

    We have a strange issue with our setup of icinga / nagios and mrtg. Icinga is working great and has no problem, it can monitor basically everything without issues. We setup mrtg to gather bandwith data from our routers and switches. MRTG is working fine: it stores the log data in the /var/www/mrtg/ directory and displays the graph data via web. We assume so MRTG is doing great. We tried to setup bandwidth checks in nagios: define service{ use generic-service ; Inherit values from a template host_name zywall-agora service_description ZYWALL AGORA TRAFFICO check_command check_local_mrtgtraf!/var/www/mrtg/x.x.x.x_2.log!AVG!1000000,2000000!5000000,5000000!1000 check_interval 1 ; Check the service every 1 minute under normal conditions retry_interval 1 ; Re-check every minute until its final/hard state is determined } Where /var/www/mrtg/x.x.x.x_2.log is the correct log path file. We keep on getting Unable to open MRTG log file error in the test result in icinga web interface. We tried everything: give ownership to user nagios or icinga to the log file give chmod 777 to the file try to copy the file in another directory and give it full permission Same error. The strange thing is that if we use the command that nagios generate in a bash session the command works like a charm: /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_mrtgtraf -F /var/www/mrtg/x.x.x.x_2.log -a AVG -w 10,20 -c 5000000,5000000 -e 10 Result: Traffic WARNING - Avg. In = 17.9 KB/s, Avg. Out = 5.0 KB/s|in=17.877930KB/s;10.000000;5000000.000000;0.000000 out=5.000000KB/s;20.000000;5000000.000000;0.000000 We ran that command line as root, as user nagios and as user icinga and all three worked ok. We thought that the command that nagios perform maybe has something wrong in it, so we debugged nagios but we found out that the generated command from nagios is the same as above. Searching on google for these kind of problem returns only issues of systems where mrtg is not installed or issues with the wrong path to the log file, but these seems not to be our case. We are stuck, can somebody help?

  • Windows Vista: Screen remains darkened for 30-60 seconds *after* UAC prompt

    Fixing someone's Vista computer. Process: I click any program or process that opens a User Account Control prompt. Screen goes dim so you may hit Continue to perform a secure user action. I click Continue Screen goes black for 30 seconds to 1 minute while you wait for the screen to return. In another example I click Cancel and screen still then goes black for 30 seconds to a minute. In that timeframe a chime goes off while you wait. (No chime if it was being cancelled.) Then screen comes back to continue with whatever. Something is occurring after the UAC prompt. Considering everything is practically a UAC acceptance this can get pretty annoying pretty quickly. Laptop has external monitor to regular external plug. Works fine. Laptop also has USB IOGEAR additional external video card. This is problematic but when unplugged same above behaviour occurs. I've ruled out monitor interference since same blackout after the UAC prompt appears with external monitors plugged in or when rebooted with no external monitors. Any suggestions on how to address this problem?

  • Two large, linked Excel files take 30 minutes to save, except in VMWare environment

    I support some tax consultants who love to use Excel when they should probably be using Access. Anyway, they have created two Excel files, A and B. File B has cells linked to file A. File A is 27 MB and file B is 16 MB. One worksheet has roughly 1 million rows and there is another worksheet doing a whole bunch of SUMIF on the 1 million rows. Not the best idea, but whatever. Both Excel files open and recalculate within a reasonable amount of time (1-2 minutes). For a files that large, this is acceptable. Here is the problem: Once you change a cell, and save the file B, it takes a solid 30 minutes to save the file, and the processors are going full speed. I've tried this on 6 different machines, all running Windows XP SP3 with Office 2007 SP2 and all patches. The specs vary from one machine with 512 MB or RAM to a machine with 4 GB of RAM and quad processors. Same result every time. Here is the clincher: If I do this same save operation on a VMWare virtual machine, the file gets saved in 1 minute. I've tried this with my ESX servers at the office, my Mac Fusion at home, and VMWare workstation at the office. It does not matter how much RAM the virtual machine has... it saves in about 1 minute every time. Does anybody have any idea why this is happening and how to fix?

Many of the ports on the 3750X's have 2960's connected to them and are hardcoded as trunk ports.   • Mac OS X - configuring ntpd server with on LAN with D-Link DIR-655

    Hey all, This question is pretty specific, but I hope someone will have seen this error elsewhere. I a configuring a machine running OS X 10.5.8 to be an NTP server for machines connected to a LAN that is not connected to the Internet. I am not too worried about knowing the "right" time on all the machines, but rather worried about making sure everyone has the same notion of time. I configured the NTP daemon on Mac by turning on the Set date and time automatically in System Preferences, using the server's clock, 127.127.1.0 as the reference clock. I figured I should see if the server can NTP query itself before proceeding to the clients. The weird part is when I run the ntpq -p command in a command-prompt when connected to my D-Link DIR-655 (firmware: 1.33), it hangs for about a minute or so each time before finally giving me some output. I thought the problem might have to do with Port Forwarding, so I configured the router to forward port 123 for the IP of the server, but that did not improve the situation. When I run the ntpq -p command on my school's network, on a Linksys WRT54G router, or with the wireless Airport card turned off - I have absolutely no problems - the command returns a response instantly. Is this normal? I can see why a query might take a minute or so, but I don't understand why one router does it faster than the other. I tried messing around with the ntp.conf file adding the burst, minpoll, and maxpoll options: server 127.127.1.0 burst minpoll 4 maxpoll 5 Figuring that perhaps I am polling too often and the configuration file is slowing me down, but even with this, the ntpq still hangs on the D-Link DIR-655, but does just fine on the other routers. Any thoughts on where the lag is coming from or if the lag is even a problem?

  • Time Drift on VM servers, need a reliable solution

    We have some windows server 2008 VMware instances on multiple physical servers (hosted) and an application which requires the time to be synced across the server instances. Obviously, VMware has problems with this and we really have never gotten it working any better, we have setup the servers to poll for an NTP update every minute which mitigates the problem (in a fairly crude way). Except that every once in a while, the update will fail (because there's already too much drift) and then windows never does an NTP update afterwards which eventually allows the servers to drift far enough apart that our application breaks, and we notice. We are thinking about changing hosts to Xen servers on approximately the same setup, and I anticipate similar problems. can anyone tell me if Xen has the same time-drift issues VMware does, for guests? can anyone tell me what the best windows server settings are for syncing with an external NTP server to keep things in sync: how frequently do you recommend syncing? (assuming every minute) do you recommend running our own NTP server - even if it has to be on a virtual instance? (assuming not) is there any way to tell windows to sync with the NTP server no matter what the time difference is? any other suggestions for keeping windows servers time in sync?   • FTP issues with Windows 2003 box and Filezilla

    We've set up a Windows 2003 server with IIS 6 and the FTP is Filezilla. I'm not a sys admin by any means and neither is my other developer. I'm trying to connect to FTP on a Mac with a Cyberduck FTP client. I'm running OSX 10.6.3. The problem is that I can connect to the FTP address, but when I do it will hang for a minute or two trying to list the directories. This address is pointed to the webroot folder so it's only trying to list the pertinent folders for the site we're working on. Eventually after a minute or two it will go through and list everything and then if you try and open a file or another folder, it will hang again and then eventually list the folders. My question: Is there some stupid default setting we're missing? Is this a common occurrence? Like I said I'm not a sys admin at all and I'm sure I'm missing some valuable questions for anyone that reads this, so please fire away if you can help and you need more info, I'll do my best to provide it.
