• How can I access the copy buffer on the web?

  Wild question here. Is it possible to access the copy buffer on the web. What I mean is. Can I go into Photoshop. Select a piece of a photo. Copy that piece and paste it into some element. That something would be like a Java applet or Flash or Silverlight or anything. I am just wondering if it is possible and if someone could point me in a direction. Since a few google searches have only found where you can copy files and paste via a Java applet.

• web page db query optimisation

  I am putting together a web page which is quite 'expensive' in terms of Db hits. I dont want to start optimizing at this stage - though with me trying to hit a deadline, I may end up not optimising at all. Currently the page requires 18 (thats right eighteen) hits to the db. I am already using joins, and some of the queries are UNIONed to minimize the trips to the db. My local dev machine can handle this (page is not slow) however, I feel if I release this into the wild, the number of queries will quickly overwhelm my database (mySQL). I could always use memcache or something similar, but I would much rather continue with my other dev work that needs to be completed before the deadline - at least retrieving the page work, its simply a matter of optimization. My question therefore is - is 18 db queries for a single page retrieval completely outrageous - (i.e. I should put everything on hold and optimize the hell of the retrieval logic), or shall I continue as normal, meet the deadline and release on schedule and see what happens?

• Which libraries use the "We Know Where You Live" optimization for std::make_shared?

  Over two years ago, Stephan T. Lavavej described a space-saving optimization he implemented in Microsoft's implementation of std::make_shared, and I know from speaking with him that Microsoft has nothing against other library implementations adopting this optimization. If you know for sure whether other libraries (e.g., for Gnu C++, Clang, Intel C++, plus Boost (for boost::make_shared)) have adopted this implementation, please contribute an answer. I don't have ready access to that many make_shared implementations, nor am I wild about digging into the bowels of the ones I have to see if they've implemented the WKWYL optimization, but I'm hoping that SO readers know the answers for some libraries off-hand. I know from looking at the code that as of Boost 1.52, the WKWYL optimization had not been implemented, but Boost is now up to version 1.55. Note that this optimization is different from std::make_shared's ability to avoid a dedicated heap allocation for the reference count used by std::shared_ptr. • What is the status of jQuery's multi-argument content syntax: deprecated, supported, documented?

  I've never seen this in any jQuery docs I've read; nor, have I ever seen it in the wild. I just observed multi-content syntax working here with jQuery 1.4.2. Is this supported syntax? Is it deprecated? $(".section.warranty .warranty_checks :last").after( $('<div class="little check" />').click( function () { alert('hi') } ) , $('<span>OEM</span>') /*Notice this (a second) argument */ ); I've never seen any indication in the jQuery grammar that any of the functions accept more than one argument (content) in such a fashion.

• Structure of open source project's repository

  I'm in the beginning of starting a small open source project. When cloning the main repository one gets a complete build environment with all the libraries and all the tools needed to make an official installer file, with correct version numbers. I like the fact that anyone who wants to contribute can clone the repository and get started with anything they want. But I'm thinking this makes it to easy for Evil People to create malicious installers and release into the wild. How should it be structured? What do you recommend including in the repository, versus keeping on the build server only?

• Scheme open source projects?

  Hi I'm learning scheme and was wondering if there are any active open-source projects I might be able to get involved in? I'm nearing the end of SICP and although this has good complex examples no textbook code compares to real-world applications. eg testing code / benchmarking / revision control styles / sheer size and scope etc. Hence my curiousity at seeing a project in the wild. I tried searching google code but only found projects that are interpreters that implement RSR5/6. Perhaps there are not many projects out there and I should consider scala?! Advice or even pointers to specific projects appreciated.

This executalbe is widechar ready and you want to test if one of this arguments starts with an HYPHEN case in which its an option: command -o foo how you could test it inside your code if you don't know the charset been used by the host? Should be not possible to a given console to produce the same HYPHEN representation by another char in the widechar forest? • Find similar or "like" text and replace it with other in excel

  Does anyone know how i can find similar descriptions in excel and replace them with 1 other description is there a wild card? i am. trying to make a pivot chart with a list of transactions and their descriptions and i want to group all my ATM withdrwls but i cant. On the pivot chart they appear as ATM Withdrwal-REF-1234 and each of these "withdrwls" have different reference and as a result they show up as individual items on the chart...how can i group say all my ATM withdrwals as 1 ATM Withrdawl item so that it shows a 1 atm withdrwl item on my pivot chart?

• Server-side Audio Editor

  I am looking for an audio editor that we can use server side (ASP + IIS) We want users to be able to upload an audio file, and then offer a 10 second teaser clip to other users for download. Ideally I would like our application to be able to specify Input and Output Filename, Start and End time (or Duration), and be able to fade-in and fade-out, and equalise the volume. Maybe some audio editors have a batch edit facility, and it would just be a question of installing on the server? All the keywords I have tried putting into Google have led me on a wild goose chase, hopefully someone can help me with suggestions. Thanks.

• Something wrong with deinstallation of GIT in Windows...

  I tried to remove GIT on my windows-XP, by means of the Windows/Configuration/Software menu. After some error message (which I cannot remember), it removed all files. I checked it, and there are no files with ptp in the name left on the entire system. A problem remained however: each time I opened windows-explorer, a nasty error message came calling for a dll file that wasn't there anymore. Anyone know what is going on here? A wild guess: could there be any interference between svn and git, if certain files are linked to both git and svn? Personally, I went to the registry. I found that many traces to GIT are left in the registry after deinstalling GIT the "windows-way". I removed each one carefully by hand, which seems to have solved my problem. This is of course a dangerous path, but I had no choice. Perhaps it is a good idea to look into the Windows-deinstallation script very carefully.

• gcc compiled binaries w/different sizes?

  If the same code is built at different times w/gcc, the resulting binary will have different contents. OK, I'm not wild about that, but that's what it is. However, I've recently run into a situation where the same code, built with the same version of gcc, is generating a binary with a different size than a prior build (by about 1900 bytes). Does anyone have any idea what may be causing either of these situations? Is this some kind of ELF issue? Are there any tools out there (other than ldd) that can be used to dump contents of binaries to see what exactly is different? Thanks in advance.

• excluding a column in csv file with regex

  Is there any way to exclude/delete/replace one field from a csv file with some regexp in notepad++? I have a csv file with some data like this: '1','data1','data2','data3','data4','data5','data6','data7','data8','data9', 'data10','data11','data12','data13','data14','data15','data16','data17','data18', 'data19','data20','data21','data22','data23','\'data24 with some commas, here and there and some "double quotes", and fullstops.','data25','data26' The only problem I am facing is with data24 WHERE I encounter \' and then "" and some wild characters like , and .. This is particularly fixed at 24 field. For the purpose of clarity, I have entered a newline here. But the entire text above is in juts one line. Any ideas on how to solve? Thanks.

• How much does precomputation (matching a series of strings and their permutations with a set number

  Consider a typical slots machine with n reels(say reel1: a,b,c,d,w1,d,b, ..etc). On play we generate a concatenated string of n objects (like for above, chars) We have a paytable which lists winning strings with payout amounts. The problem is a wild character (list of wilds: w1,w2) which can replace {w1:a,b,c},{w2:a} ..etc. Is it really worthwhile to have all possible winning strings permutations with the wilds precomputed and used or simply at the time of occurance, generate all combinations with the pattern in hand accordingly. I did'nt really see much difference initially, but now if I need to scale the machine to handle 11+ reels with a much higher concentration of wilds than previously, I need to figure out the exact approach for this particular bit. Any ideas will be really appreciated :)

• Pass a single boolean from an Android App to a libgdx game

  I'm writing an Android application that needs to pass a single boolean into an Android game that I am also writing. The idea is that the user does something in the App which will affect how the game operates. This is tricky with LIBGDX since I need to get the bool value into the Java files of the game, but of course, you can't call Android specific things from within LIBGDX's main Java files. I tried using an intent but of course the same problem persists. I can get the boolean into the MainActivity.Java of the android output of the game, but can't pass it along any further since the android output and the main java files don't know about each other. I have seen a few tutorials that explain how to use set up an interface in the LIBGDX java files that can call android things. This seems like wild overkill for what I want to do. I've been trying to use Android's Shared Preferences with LIBGDX's Gdx.app.getPreferences, but I can't make it work. Anyhelp would be MUCH appreciated. I've set up two hello world applications. One is a standard Android app, with a single button that is supposed to write "true" into the shared preferences. The other is a standard LIBGDX hello world that is supposed to do nothing but check that bool when launched and if true display one image to the screen, if false, display a different one. Here's the relevant bit of the Android code: import android.preference.PreferenceManager; public void onClick(View view) { if (view == this.boolButton){ final String PREF_FILE_NAME = "myBool"; SharedPreferences preferences = getSharedPreferences(PREF_FILE_NAME, MODE_WORLD_WRITEABLE); SharedPreferences.Editor editor = preferences.edit(); editor.putBoolean("myBool", true); editor.commit(); } } And here's the relevant bit of the code from the LIBGDX main file: Preferences prefs = Gdx.app.getPreferences("myBool"); boolean switcher = prefs.getBoolean("myBool"); if(switcher == true){ texture = new Texture(Gdx.files.internal("data/worked512.png")); prefs.putBoolean("myBool", false); } else { texture = new Texture(Gdx.files.internal("data/libgdx.png")); } Everything compiles fine, it just doesn't work. • Chicago SQL Saturday

  This past Saturday, April 17, 2010, I journeyed North to the great city of Chicago for some SQL Server fun, learning and fellowship. The Chicago edition of this grassroots phenomenon was the 31st scheduled SQL Saturday since the program's birth in late 2007. The Chicago SQL Saturday consisted of four tracks with eight sessions each and was a very energetic and fast paced day for the 300+/- SQL Server enthusiasts in attendance. The speaker line up included national notables such as Kevin Kline, Brent Ozar, and Brad McGehee. My hometown of Indianapolis was well represented in the speaker line up with Arie Jones, Aaron King and Derek Comingore. The day began with a very humorous keynote by Kevin Kline and Brent Ozar who emphasized the importance of community events such as SQL Saturday and the monthly user group meetings. They also brilliantly included the impact that getting involved in the SQL community through social media can have on your professional career. My approach to the day was to try to experience as much of the event as I could, so there were very few sessions that I attended for their full duration. I leaped from session to session like a bumble bee, gleaning bits of nectar from each session. Amid these leaps I took the opportunity to briefly chat with some of the in-the-queue speakers as well as other attendees that wondered the hallways. I especially enjoyed a great discussion with Devin Knight about his plans regarding the upcoming Jacksonville SQL Saturday as well as an interesting SQL interpretation of the Iron Chef, which I think would catch on like wild-fire. There were two sessions that stood out as exceptional. So much so that I could not pull myself away: Kevin Kline presented on "SQL Server Internals and Architecture". This session could have been classified as one that is intended for the beginner. Kevin even personally warned me of such as I entered the room. I am a believer in revisiting the basics regardless of the level of your mastery, so I entered into this session in that spirit. It was a very clear and precise presentation. Masterfully illustrated and demonstrated. Brad McGehee presented on "How and When to Use Indexed Views". This was a topic that I was recently exploring and was considering to for use in an integration project. Brad effectively communicated the complexity of this feature and what is involved to gain their full benefit. It was clear at the conclusion of this session that it was not the right feature for my specific needs. Overall, the event was a great success. The use of volunteers, from an attendee's perspective was masterful. The only recommendation that I would have for the next Chicago SQL Saturday would be to include more time in between sessions to permit some level of networking among the attendees, one-on-one questions for speakers and visits to the sponsor booths. Congratulations to Wendy Pastrick, Ted Krueger, and Aaron Lowe for their efforts and a very successful SQL Saturday!

Building a “real” extension for Expression Blend Timmy Kokke's code is WPF, but the subject is near and dear to us all, Timmy has a real-world Expression Blend extension up... a search for controls in the Objects and Timelines pane ... and even if that doesn't interest you... it's the source to a Blend extension! XPath support in Silverlight 4 + XPathPad Tim Greenfield not only talks about XPath in SL4RC, but he has produced a tool, XPathPad, and provided the source... if you've used XPath, you either are a higher thinker than me(not a big stretch), or you need this :) Using a Service Locator to Work with MessageBoxes in an MVVM Application Josh Smith posted about a question that comes up a lot: showing a messagebox from a ViewModel object.
