  PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much. • Presentation Plugin for NetBeans IDE 7.2

  I got some excellent help from Mark Stephens, who is from IDR Solutions, which produces JPedal. Using the LGPL version of JPedal, and code provided by Mark, it's now possible to right-click the node that appears in the Presentation Window: ...after which, using a file browser (to locate a file on disk) or a URL (a very simple check is done, the URL must start with "http" and end with "pdf"), you can now open PDF files as images (thanks to conversion from PDF to images done by JPedal) into NetBeans IDE, typically (I imagine) for presentation purposes: Note that you should consider the plugin in "alpha" state. But, despite that, I've had good results. The new format has so many advantages over the old that we really don't want to go back, but mod_speling is so nice to have that we'd also really like it to work if possible. Any ideas for how we might be able to fix mod_speling?

• Printing multiple pages per sheet doesn't work

  In Ubuntu 12.04, I added a network printer which I had previously used without any problems on a different machine (with the same release of Ubuntu). Now, with the default generic driver installed, printing multiple pages per sheet from evince doesn't work properly. If I select 2 per sheet, be it long or short edge, it always prints 4. Why is this? It used to happen with non-pdf documents in the past, like from a browser. My workaround was to print to pdf file and then print the pdf itself. Now I'm clueless... Edit: the same happens with a different network printer, in which I installed the driver specific to its particular model.

• Disable plugin in Firefox (acroread)

  I installed acroread from the repositories, and it has decided it should be the default plugin in Firefox, such that when I click on a pdf, it opens in a Firefox window. Unfortunately, it does not display (at least when in dual head mode). This should be simple, but I cannot disable the plugin. Under Firefox Edit - Preferences- Applications - pdf is set to "always ask" so I don't know why it uses acroread in the first place. Under Tools - Manage Content Plugins I see acroread is selected for pdf content. I have the option in the dropdown to search for a new plugin, but not to simply download the file. Typing about:config into the Firefox toolbar gives me a list of configuration options, but does not mention plugin.disable or acroread anywhere. How do I disable the plugin? I have Firefox 11.0 on Ubuntu 11.10

• Good 3D Game Engine for the Horror Genre [on hold]

  I am starting to think about and design (pencil drawings) a simple, horror game. I'm in need of a good engine which supports features like Dynamic Lighting (for a characters flashlight) and dynamic shadows. My first choice was obviously Unity3D, as its free and is (supposedly) the easiest to use. However, I believe that a lot of features are locked for the Pro version (a $1500 investment). Is there any good, free engines that support dynamic events? I have read a lot of posts recommending the Source engine but I don't want to make a mod, I would like to make a fully featured standalone game. I'm not looking for opinions on "Which engine you prefer" or "Which engine do you use", all I would like is to be presented with the facts. -James

• How do I query the gvfs metadata for a specific attribute?

  A nice feature in evince is that when you close the program and later reopen the same pdf, it automatically jumps to the page you were reading. The problem I have is that I often read ebooks on several computers and I have to find were I was on the last computer I was reading the pdf. I think syncing these bookmarks in UbuntuOne would be a killer feature for people like me who read pdfs on different computers. By investigating a bit, I found where evince was storing this data, it's in the gvfs metadata and it can be accessed for a particular document by typing gvfs-ls -a "metadata::evince::page" myEbook.pdf Rather that querying a particular file, I'd like to query the whole metadata file (located in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home for the home directory) for any file where this particular attribute is set to some value. The biggest issue is that gvfs metadata and stored in binary files and we all know it's not easy to get something out of a binary file. So, do you know any way to query the gvfs metadata for some attribute?

• Convert each slide to PNG with LibreOffice Impress in terminal with excel graph

  I need to convert each slide in a powerpoint presentation to a PNG with the command line. I have tried to convert it to a PDF then to individual PNGs but the images haven't exported properly. These images are graphs originally from Microsoft Excel. If I export it as a PNG from within LibreOffice the graph exports properly, but not if I convert it to a PDF first using unoconv or the export tool in LibreOffice Impress. Here is a couple of examples, in impress: As you can see the image works. But when this is exported to PDF it looks like: So whats going wrong? As if its directly exported to PNG in libreoffice it looks exactly as is in the presentation. Also if I convert it to the LibreOffice file format this also happens.

• One to many problem with implementing 301 redirect after changed urls

I had an old dynamic url which I have now split into multiple static urls. e.g. www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=1&id=2 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=3 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=4, etc which I have changed to something like www.mydomain.com/electronics/radio www.mydomain.com/electronics/television www.mydomain.com/mobile/smartphone, etc. Google has previously indexed the dynamic urls and search results show the old urls. I want search to point to the new urls. I have kept the old url active, so both urls work. How can I set up a 301 redirect in this case? I run IIS and it only allows a page to be redirected to 1 url. Should I deactivate the old dynamic url? In that case I lose all the previous seo rankings..

• Cisco ASA: How to route PPPoE-assigned subnet?

  We've just received a fiber uplink, and I'm trying to configure our Cisco ASA 5505 to properly use it. The provider requires us to connect via PPPoE, and I managed to configure the ASA as a PPPoE client and establish a connection. The ASA is assigned an IP address by PPPoE, and I can ping out from the ASA to the internet, but I should have access to an entire /28 subnet. I can't figure out how to get that subnet configured on the ASA, so that I can route or NAT the available public addresses to various internal hosts. My assigned range is: 188.xx.xx.176/28 The address I get via PPPoE is 188.xx.xx.177/32, which according to our provider is our Default Gateway address. They claim the subnet is correctly routed to us on their side. How does the ASA know which range it is responsible for on the Fiber interface? How do I use the addresses from my range? To clarify my config; The ASA is currently configured to default-route to our ADSL uplink on port Ethernet0/0 (interface vlan2, nicknamed Outside). The fiber is connected to port Ethernet0/2 (interface vlan50, nicknamed Fiber) so I can configure and test it before making it the default route. Once I'm clear on how to set it all up, I'll fully replace the Outside interface with Fiber. • Copying the bitmap contents of a UIView's context to that of another UIView

  Basically what I want to do is copy the already rendered content (a PDF drawn into the UIView's graphics context using CGContextDrawPDFPage()) onto a similar UIView, without having to re render the PDF. The idea is, that I'd then be able to perform an animated transform on the UIView and later re render the PDF with more accuracy. For both UIViews I'm using a larger-than-screen CATiledLayer to make it easier to rerender the PDF once the user zooms in, if that makes any difference. Any tips? I'm kind of lost here.

But something in the code seems to not be released properly because every-time I pull a PDF page that contains an image my memory footprint increases. I need to write one that copies a file to a new folder and renames it At the moment, my batch file consists of only this command: COPY ABC.PDF \\Documents As you can see, it only copies the file ABC.pdf to the network folder 'Documents'. However i need to change this so it renames the file ABCxxx.pdf, where xxx is a text variable that i would like to set somewhere in the batch file. For example, if xxx = "_Draft", then file would be renamed ABC_Draft.pdf after it is copied. Thanks

• Web service using Data Dynamics ActiveReports occasionally slows down

  My company is running into a problem with a web service that is written in C#/ASP.Net. The service receives an identity key for data in SQL Server and a path to generate and save a PDF report for this data. In most cases, this web service returns results to the calling web pages very quickly, usually within a few seconds max. However, it seems to occasionally hit a significant slowdown. The web application calling the web service will generate a timeout error when this slowdown occurs. We have checked and the PDF does get created and saved to the server, so it looks like the web service eventually finishes executing. It seems to take about 1 to 2 minutes for processing to have completed. The PDF is generated using ActiveReports from Data Dynamics. Wwhen this problem occurs, making a small change to the web service's config file (ie, adding a blank space to a connection string line) seems to restart the web service and everything is perfectly ok for a period of time afterwards. Other web applications that are running on the same web server do not seem to experience this type of behavior, only this particular web service. I have added the code for the web service below. It is basic calls to 3rd party libraries. We are not able to recreate this problem in test. I am wondering what might be causing this issue?   I've used ABDpdf to render a pdf and stream it to the browser, but I'm wondering if I can attach the rendered pdf to an email. Has anyone ever done that? I'm hoping there is a way that doesn't require me to save the pdf to a temp directory then attach the file, then delete it.

How can we customize the Jasper Viewer so that the only format which our users can choose to export data is PDF?
