• Within a DLL, how is the function table structured?

  I've been looking into the implementation of a device library that doesn't explicitly support my operating system. In particular, I have a disassembled DLL, and a fair amount of supporting source code. Now, how is the function table/export table structured? My understanding is that the first structure of the .data section is a table of VRAs. Next is a table of strings linked by index to that first address table. This makes sense to me, as a linker could translate between symbols and addresses. How do functions referenced by ordinals fit into this picture? How does one know which function has such and such ordinal number, and how does the linker resolve this? In other words, given that some other DLL imports SOME_LIBRARY_ordinal_7, how does the linker know which function to work with? Thanks, all! edit More information... Im working with the FTDI libraries, and would like to resolve which function is being invoked. In particular, I see something like: extern FTD2XX_Ordinal_28: near how might I go about determining which function is being referenced, and how does the linker do this?

• How to read/write from erlang to a named pipe ?

  I need my erlang application to read and write through a named pipe. Opening the named pipe as a file will fail with eisdir. I wrote the following module, but it is fragile and feels wrong in many ways. Also it fails on reading after a while. • Sheet and thread memory problem

  Hi Guys, recently I started a project which can export some precalculated Grafix/Audio to files, for after processing. Which worked great, but after an amount of time, it turned out that the main thread was not responding anymore and my memory footprint raised unstoppable. I tried to debug it with Instruments, and saw a lot of CFHash etc stuff growing to infinity. By accident i clicked below the sheet, and temporary it helped, the main thread (AppKit ?) was releasing it's stuff, but just for a little time. I can't explain it to me, first of all I thought it was the access from my thread to the Progressbar to update the Progress (intervalled at 0,5sec), so I cut it out. But even if I'm not updating anything and did nothing with the Progressbar, my Application eat up all the Memory, because of not releasing it's "Main-Event" or whatsoever Stuff. Is there any possibility to "drain" this Main thread Memory stuff (Runloop / NSApp call?). And why the heck doesn't the Main thread respond anymore (after this simple task) ??? I don't have a clou anymore, please help ! Thanks in advance ! P.S. How do you guys implement "threaded long task" Stuff and updating your gui ???

• gems, bundle command, and ruby not found in new terminal window

  So I installed ruby with rvm, ran a bundle install and installed a bunch of gems, etc. It all works just fine in the original terminal window I did all of this in but I opened up a new terminal window and now I'm getting errors like bundle: command not found and gem command not found. I tried doing a symbolic link for the gem command but then when I do gem list it displays a much shorter list of my local gems and not at all the ones I need for bundle install. The original problem still stands though.

• What are your best practices for ensuring the correctness of the reports from SQL?

  Part of my work involves creating reports and data from SQL Server to be used as information for decision. The majority of the data is aggregated, like inventory, sales and costs totals from departments, and other dimensions. When I am creating the reports, and more specifically, I am developing the SELECTs to extract the aggregated data from the OLTP database, I worry about mistaking a JOIN or a GROUP BY, for example, returning incorrect results. I try to use some "best practices" to prevent me for "generating" wrong numbers: When creating an aggregated data set, always explode this data set without the aggregation and look for any obvious error. Export the exploded data set to Excel and compare the SUM(), AVG(), etc, from SQL Server and Excel. Involve the people who would use the information and ask for some validation (ask people to help to identify mistakes on the numbers). Never deploy those things in the afternoon - when possible, try to take a look at the T-SQL on the next morning with a refreshed mind. I had many bugs corrected using this simple procedure. Even with those procedures, I always worry about the numbers. What are your best practices for ensuring the correctness of the reports?

  In a *.cpp file, trying to use a third party lib: #define DLL_IMPORT #include <thirdParty.h> // Third party header has code like: // #ifdef DLL_IMPORT // #define DLL_DECL __declspec(dllimport) // fatal error C1001: An internal error has occurred in the compiler. Alternative: #define NO_DLL #include <thirdParty.h> // Third party header has code like: // #elif defined(NO_DLL) // #define DLL_DECL // Compiles fine, but linker errors as can't find DLL functions // I can reproduce results by remove macros and #define all together and manually editing the third party files to have __declspec(dllimport) or not Has anyone come across anything similar, or can hint at the cause? (which is created using CMake). Above is actual example of 2 line *.cpp that crashes so it's narrowed down to something in the #include. The following also work fine: Compile the examples provided by the third party (they provide a *.sln) that use dllimport/export so it doesn't appear to be the fault of the library Compile the third party lib as part of the production project (so dllexport works fine) I've trawled the project settings pages of the two projects to try and spot differences, but have come up blank. Of course, it's possible I'm missing something as those settings pages are not the easiest to navigate. I'll get access to VS2008 in a day or so, so can compare with that. The third party library is MySql++.

• Starting a personal reuasable code repository.

  Hi, I've been meaning to start a library of reusable code snippets for a while and never seem to get round to it. At the moment I just tend to have some transient classes/files that I drag out of old projects. I think my main problems are: Where to start. What structure should my repository take? Should it be a compiled library (where appropriate) or just classes/files I can drop into any project? Or a library project that can be included? What are the licencing implications of that? In my experience, a built/minified library will quickly become out of date and the source will get lost. So I'm leaning towards source that I can export from SVN and include in any project. Intellectual property. I am employeed, so a lot of the code I write is not my IP. How can I ensure that I don't give my own IP away using it on projects in work and at home? I'm thinking the best way would be to licence my library with an open source licence and make sure I only add to it in my own time using my own equipment and therefore making sure that if I use it in a work project the same rules apply as if I was using a third party library. I write in many different languages and often would require two or more parts of this library. Should I look at implementing a few template projects and a core project for each of my chosen reusable components and languages? Has anyone else got this sort of library and how do you organise and update it?

• Why my jquery function is not firing on Firefox

  I have some trouble with some jquery method (for some checkboxes I want them to fire on checked/unchecked so I can do something then). • Dynamic Data Extract Tools

  I've been searching around for a few weeks now for a tool that either is fully built or a direction of something I could build for dynamically extracting data via a web interface. Basically, what I'm looking for is a way to give users a list of all available data objects from our database and then let them pick ones from the list they'd like to view and set parameters then export the results to an excel file. Right now we're doing it purely with SQL statements but we have hundreds of objects so as you might imagine, those statements are really complex and prone to errors. It would be great if there was a tool available to do this or if someone had an idea of an easy way to organize this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've looked at BI tools like QlikView and Tableau but that is probably overkill for what we're trying to do. The open-source BI tools we've looked at seemed really primitive in their functionality. The other thing we looked at was MSAS (our DB is SQL Server) but I'd prefer something that was more database-agnostic and lived on a web server instead of on the database.

• PDF reviewer in C# (ASP.NET/Silverlight?)

  Hi. I'm essentially planning to mimic the comment functions on PDF files, but online. That is; a user should be able to log in and upload a PDF file, and then numerous different users should be able to add comments etc to this same file (and view the file, with comments, online). External libraries are ok. Free obviously preferred, but commercial ones are fine if they provide a lot of the needed functionality. Note that this is meant to be used in a commercial environment. Comments don't necessarily need to be able to be exported from the site. I.e. if the comments are just put as a layer on top of a PDF file (and not in the actual file) that's ok. But obviously the more export functionality the better. I have looked at a few libraries (using the related questions and google) and while I find some that seem to do sort of what I want I'm not sure they are the bee's knees plus I would like to do as much myself as possible. The three basic approaches I've thought of is: Use some sort of native PDF viewing and then just smack down a layer on top of it where you can move around comments etc. Convert PDFs to HTML and work from there. Problem here it would either require proper PDFs (e.g. non-scanned) or really good OCR which seems a bit tedious. Convert PDFs to images and work from there. I'm afraid this will create massive images however. We're talking PDFs that can be hundreds of pages. One option would of course to just display one PDF page (image) at a time. And last - should I look at Silverlight for this or go with ASP.NET? Ideas and input concerning this project are much appreciated.

• Find Lines with N occurrences of a char

  I have a txt file that I’m trying to import as flat file into SQL2008 that looks like this: “123456”,”some text” “543210”,”some more text” “111223”,”other text” etc… The file has more than 300.000 rows and the text is large (usually 200-500 chars), so scanning the file by hand is very time consuming and prone to error. Other similar (and even more complex files) were successfully imported. The problem with this one, is that “some lines” contain quotes in the text… (this came from an export from an old SuperBase DB that didn’t let you specify a text quantifier, there’s nothing I can do with the file other than clear it and try to import it). So the “offending” lines look like this: “123456”,”this text “contains” a quote” “543210”,”And the “above” text is bad” etc… You can see the problem here. Now, 300.000 is not too much if I could perform a search using a text editor that can use regex, I’d manually remove the quotes from each line. The problem is not the number of offending lines, but the impossibility to find them with a simple search. I’m sure there are less than 500, but spread those in a 300.000 lines txt file and you know what I mean. Based upon that, what would be the best regex I could use to identify these lines? My first thought is: Tell me which lines contain more than 4 quotes (“). But I couldn’t come up with anything (I’m not good at Regex beyond the basics).

  How do I get empty spaces from the end of a varchar(513) field while exporting data from SQL table to a flat file. I have a console application. Here is what I am using to export a SQL table having only one column of varchar(513) to a flat file. But I need to get all the 513 characters including spaces at the end. How do I change this code to incorporate that. • Combine config-paramters with parameters passed from commanline

  I have created a SSIS-package that imports a file into a table (simple enough). I have some variables, a few set in a config-file such as server, database, importfolder. at runtime I want to pass the filename. This is done through a stored procedure using dtexec. When setting the paramters throught the configfile it works fine also when setting all parameters in the procedure and passing them with the \Set statement (se below). when I try to combine the config-version with settings parameters on the fly I get an error refering to the config-files path that was set at design time. Has anybody come across this and found a solution for it? • order of operations for environment variables

  I want to understand how environment variables are set and reset (overridden). I'm running Apache/2.2.24 (Unix) PHP/5.4.14 on a mac . My theory is this: Environment vars can be set in bash, then they can be overwritten with httpd.conf preceding a VirtualHost directive that precedes php.ini, which can then be overwritten by .htaccess (if allowable) and finally by PHP I tried the following: setting environment variable in bash: I added export ENVIRONMENT='local' to my ~/.bashrc file, restarted apache and did not get any output from print_r($_ENV); (in a simple index.php file at the root of my webserver). I also tried putting ENVIRONMENT='local' into /etc/environment, and restarting apache, nothing, as well as /etc/bashrc, restart apache. still nothing. setting environment variable in httpd.conf: I added SetEnv ENVIRONMENT 'local-httpd to the end of my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file (but before I load other conf files, such as virtual host [Include /private/etc/apache2/other/*.conf]). I now see the variable in the array print_r($_SERVER); but not print_r($_ENV);. setting environment variable in httpd-vhosts.conf: I added SetEnv ENVIRONMENT 'local-vhost to my /etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf file in my generic directive that points to my default document root. I now see the variable has been overwritten (to local-vhost from local-httpd, so I know where the variable is getting set). setting environment variable in php.ini: while searching for a proper place to put my environment variable, I noticed that variables_order = "GPCS" was set to the production value rather than EGPCS. I changed it, restarted my server and found that I was now getting output for print_r($_ENV); but not my expected custom variable. It also appears that I am not able to set a custom variable in this file. Please tell me if I am wrong setting environment variable in .htaccess: I added SetEnv ENVIRONMENT 'local-htaccess'. This worked as expected, overwriting all other values that were set. setting / overwriting environment variable in PHP: if (...) { putenv('ENVIRONMENT=local'); } I'm asking this question because I have a lot of local and remote testing servers, some of which may or may not allow me access to modify httpd, httpd-vhost, php.ini or environment variables. I want to understand what is best for those difference scenarios (shared hosting, heroku, local servers, etc) I obviously don't know how to properly set the environment variable in bash in a way that php can use it, I'd like to know how to do that (as I think Heroku does something similar with heroku config set...)

• DB2 Integrity Checks and Exception Tables

  I am working on planning a migration of a DB2 8.1 database from a horrible IBM encoding to UTF-8 to support further languages etc. I am encountering an issue that I am stuck on. A few notes on this migration: We are using db2move to export and load the data and db2look to get the details fo the database (tablespaces, tables, keys etc). We found the loading process worked nicely with db2move import, however, the data takes 7 hours to load and this was unacceptable downtime when we actually complete the conversion on the main database. We are now using db2move load, which is much faster as it seems to simply throw the data in without integrity checks. Which leads to my current issue. After completing the db2move load process, several tables are in a check pending state and require integrity checks. Integrity checks are done via the following: set integrity for . immediate checked This works for most tables, however, some tables give an error: DB21034E The command was processed as an SQL statement because it was not a valid Command Line Processor command. During SQL processing it returned: SQL3603N Check data processing through the SET INTEGRITY statement has found integrity violation involving a constraint with name "blah.SQL120124110232400". SQLSTATE=23514 The internets tell me that the solution to this issue is to create an exception table based on the actual table and tell the SET INTEGRITY command to send any exceptions to that table (as below): db2 create table blah_EXCEPTION like blah db2 SET INTEGRITY FOR blah IMMEDIATE CHECKED FOR EXCEPTION IN blah USE blah_EXCEPTION NOW, here is the specific issue I am having! The above forces all the rows with issues to the specified exception table. Well that's just super, buuuuuut I can not lose data in this conversion, its simply unacceptable. The internets and IBM has a vague description of sending the violations to the exception tables and then "dealing with the data" that is in the exception table. Unfortunately, I am not clear what this means and I was hoping that some wise individual knows and could help me out and let me know how I can retrieve this data from these tables and place the data in the original/proper table rather than these exception tables. • c# Uploading files to ftp server

  Hi there, I have a problem with uploading files to ftp server. I have a few buttons. Every button uploads different files to the ftp. The first time when a button is clicked the file is uploaded successfully, but the second and later tries fail. It gives me "The operation has timed out". When I close the site and then open it again I can upload again only one file. I am sure that I can override files on the ftp. • PHP fopen returning null on files that work fine with include and get_file_contents

  Hi, I have XAMPP installed on a windows 2000 server. everything is working great except the PHP fopen function. I can neither create nor open files with it. the strange thing is that i can include/require/file_get_contents/other file related functions; also fopen does not generate any errors or notices it just returns NULL. I have gone as far as to grant full control of the file and all enclosing folders to everybody but i still get NULL instead of a file pointer. I have tried this on php 5.2.9, 5.2.13, and 5.3.1 with the same effect. i have gone through the php.ini file looking for something that is breaking it; i have even tried deleting and using the basic ini file from a linux box where fopen is working and still nothing. I know i have to restart apache after changing my ini and all that and have been (I have even restarted the server) so thats not it. I am at this poing assuming it is an apache configuration issue somehow, tomorrow im going to run a test through php-cli to make sure. I really don't want to bruise my head anymore over this can some apache/php wizard come to my aid? I'm my app, there's a possibility to import a txt or csv file with data. In the case of the error, the file contains 444 rows (file is 14,5 kB). When i try to send it to the server to process it, i get an QuotaExceedException, telling me to increase MaxReceivedMessageSize.
