• How do you test if a PCI slot is working - motherboard diagnostic software?

  I suspect that my motherboard is bad, and that my PCI-E slot is not working. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that had a Hauppage 2250 working fine in the PCI-E slot for many months. However - recently - would not get TV channels that I used to get --- until finally Media center cant detect any channels at all. Got a new tuner card (ATI 350 card) - cant detect any channels. The cable signal is good - I have it connected directly to a TV - all channels come in clear. SO that is why I suspect a motherboard problem. Are there any motherboard diagnostic scanner utilities that can verify I need a new motherboard

• How do I keep second monitor (HDTV) from auto-disabling in XP when it is turned off?

  I have a new 32" TV that I hooked up to the HDMI port on the back of my video card to use as a second monitor. I used an HDMI/DVI cable to hook it to the TV, and whenever I turn my TV off, XP disables the device tied to the TV so each time I want to use the TV as the monitor, I have to go into my display properties and enable it; it gets pretty annoying. How do I turn this 'feature' off? -- I have an NVidia card should it be specific to the nvidia control panel.

  I Have a Sony Camcorder w/ a 4-pin firewire output. I have HP laptop I want to use it with, but the laptop, does not have a firewire port, just VGA, HDMI, USB, ESATA, Ethernet, and Modem. In addition, It doesn't have a PC Card slot for adding a Firewire card. Googling for "Firewire to USB adapter" returns a lot of hits, but no product that seems to do what I want. I assume I need a USB dongle that gives a firewire port and has drivers so that the PC sees it as a regular firewire port. Thanks for any recommendations

  Hello there, I'm having some trouble implementing DoubleBuffer into my program. Before you faint from the wall of text, you should know that a lot of it is there just in case you need to know. The actual place where I think I'm having problems is in one method. I've recently looked up a tutorial on the gpwiki about double buffering, and decided to try and implement the code they had into the code I have that I'm trying to implement doublebuffer in. I get the following error: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Component must have a valid peer". I don't know if it makes any difference if you know it or not, but the following is the code with the main method. This is just a Frame that displays the ChronosDisplay class inside it. • Why cant I get 3 monitors working with my ati 5770

  I have an ati 5770, card with vga, dvi and hdmi output. I can only get 2 out of the 3 monitors working at once, however i can change the configuation so that all monitors can be selected, but only 2 will work at once.. 2 of my monitors have dvi inputs and one has vga. in my catyalist control center it shows all 3 monitors are there but either 2 can be selected at a time, and so the same with my windows 7. I have and adapter which i use on the 3rd monitor, hdmi-dvi adaptor and it works. also when i boot up my pc i get 2 monitors booting up and when windows starts the 3rd monitor boots but the 1st one closes. I looked at my package box and it actualy does specify ati eyefinity technology is available with this card. why wont it work???

• HDMI output issue in Ubuntu

  Hi, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP notebook with a nVidia GT 130M graphics card. Whenever I connect a HDTV using the HDMI output and set all of the settings in the nVidia Control Panel, it will output to the HDTV, but cut off about 24 pixels on each side. Sometimes (but not often), it will work properly (display the entire screen), but I cannot get it to work thus consistently. I have tried using resolutions of 1920x1080, 1360x768, 800x600 with two HDTVs of different brands, with and without forcing full GPU scaling, with and without syncing to VBlank (what is this?), etc., and also using a Linux Mint 9 computer with integrated Intel (X4000-ish, don't remember exactly) graphics. The problem persists no matter what, but only with HDMI output (VGA works fine). The same computers works fine with HDTVs in Windows. Any ideas?

• Stream Music To Ventrilo From ESXi VM

  I would like to stream music to my Ventrilo server from a Windows XP virtual machine running on an ESXi host. I have followed the instructions outlined here to stream music from something like VLC to the Ventrilo server on another machine and it works fine. I have also added the lines: sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "es1371" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" to my .vmx file, as suggested here (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/191878), to get a sound card in my VM. The problem I am having is that it seems that my VM is not outputting any sound, so there's nothing to stream through Ventrilo. The Device Manager on the VM shows that this new sound card has drivers and doesn't appear to have any concerns with it. Can someone point me in the right direction to get my desired outcome? Thanks!   I'm using Windows 8 on a domain (using a domain account not a Microsoft account) connecting to Exchange, all my Contacts were outlook contacts with pictures and other data, I could see the picture of the contact in the reading pane and people pane while using Outlook 2010. After the upgrade to Outlook 2013 I can see my outlook contacts but it appears that they are unavailable in the reading pane because all i can see is the default picture (the default picture picture is also visible in the notifications). If I put the mouse over the name of the people while in the reading pane all I can see is the card with the default info (the only data is that the contact is available in the next 8 hours), if i compose a new message and hover the name of the contact i can see the card with all the data (picture, company, etc.). Is this the default behavior in Outlook 2013 if you are in a domain and not connected to any service or there is a way to show the picture of my contacts in every part of outlook?

• Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

• Bridge virtual machines out WLAN interface

  It seems that my wlan card (intel 5100 AGN) firmware doesn't allow "spoofing" MAC addresses. This has the side effect of destroying the capability to bridge out my virtual machines on that interface. Apparently this is a common thing on wlan cards. I can see the incoming traffic just fine in my virtual machines, but their DHCP queries don't get bridged out of the WLAN card. It works perfectly well when using the wired ethernet port. Is there a workaround for this? MAC-NAT or something? I don't want to route my virtual machines out to the Internet because I don't want my host OS to even have an IP address. I'm using Linux and KVM for virtualization.

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • PC monitors shut off and system hangs while playing 3D games, but sound continues - Diagnosis?

  Two days ago, I started running into a problem with my Windows PC: The PC's two connected monitors simultaneously lose signal and go black (as though the PC had been powered off). The keyboard's Numlock, Capslock, and Scroll Lights will become "stuck" in their current positions, as though the PC is hung. (For example, the Numlock light on the keyboard remains lit regardless of me pressing the Numlock key repeatedly.) No keyboard input does anything. (Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Ctrl+C, etc.) However -- Whatever sound/music the PC was playing continues to play, and the PC's fans continue running, so the PC hasn't powered itself off or rebooted itself. Opening up the case, the graphics card is pretty hot to the touch. I had this happen 3 times in one evening. In all cases, I was playing a game with 3D graphics when the problem occurred (Torchlight, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering 2012, Avadon: The Black Fortress demo). I have yet to have the problem happen when I'm not playing a game. This system has been running stable for about 2.5 years prior to this. I didn't make any changes to the system prior to the problem starting to occur. System specs: OS: Windows 7 64-bit Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz Video Card: XFX GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB Motherboard: Foxconn P45A-S LGA 775 Intel ATX RAM: Corsair 4 GB (2x 2GB) DDR2-800 (PC2 6400) Full specs: New PC 2008 Troubleshooting tried so far (the problem occurred again after taking each of these steps, one at a time): Updated the video drivers with the latest drivers from NVidia's site. Opened up the case and cleaned out the video card and processor fans (both were pretty dirty). Installed and ran temperature monitor software. The processor idles at about 50 degrees C, and goes up to about 63 degrees C while playing a game (seems on the warm side, but not excessively so?). The software wasn't able to report the temperature of the GPU -- not sure this particular GPU supports software temperature readout? My initial diagnosis is that maybe the GPU is on its last legs (given that it seems to be running pretty hot, and the problem only occurs while playing 3D games). Does this seem likely? Or is it likely that this problem is caused by the processor, RAM, or motherboard? Or could this be a software issue of some kind? Thanks for any advice!

Is there something like that for video drivers? Background/Reason Because people rightfully ask why? - This is part of a larger problem which I'm waiting for resolution on from the manufacturer. • Writing an internal disk from IMG, what XP software to use?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?
