  I have the following table: create table ARDebitDetail(ID_ARDebitDetail int identity, ID_Hearing int, ID_AdvancedRatePlan int) I am trying to get the latest ID_AdvancedRatePlan based on a ID_Hearing. By latest I mean with the largest ID_ARDebitDetail. I have this query and it works fine. select ID_AdvancedRatePlan from ARDebitDetails where ID_Hearing = 135878 and ID_ARDebitDetail = ( select max(ID_ARDebitDetail) from ARDebitDetails where ID_AdvancedRatePlan > 0 and ID_Hearing = 135878 ) However, it just looks ugly and smells bad. Is there a way to rewrite it in a more concise manner?

• PHP File Serving Script: Unreliable Downloads?

  This post started as a question on ServerFault ( http://serverfault.com/questions/131156/user-receiving-partial-downloads ) but I determined that our php script was the culprit. So I'm issuing an updated question here about what I believe is the actual issue. I am using a php script to verify permissions and then serve up a file for users of my website to download. Most of the time, this works, but recently one user has been seeing problems with larger downloads. He is only getting ~80% of downloads for files that are 100MB in size. Also, all downloads from this script fail to report a filesize. Further, tests revealed that the same user COULD reliably download each of the failed files if given a direct link (at which point the filesize is reported). Here's the relevant snippet of code that we are using to serve the file: header("Content-type:$contenttype"); $len = filesize($filename); header("Content-Length: $len"); header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$title.".".$ext); readfile($filename); Note that $contenttype, $filename, $title, and $ext are all set correctly before we get here. These have been triple-checked. None of them are the problem. Also, $len does provide the correct filesize. When I use the script, I get chunked encoding on the file and no size is set for content-length. I'm hypothesizing that something is going wrong on the large downloads, leading him to get a zero-length chunk before the end of the file.   I'm writing a small piece of software that is to insert records into a database used by a commercial application. The unique primary keys (ids) in the relevant table(s) are sequential, but does not seem to be set to "auto increment". Thus, I assume, I will have to find the largest id, increment it and use that value for the record I'm inserting. In pseudo-code for brevity: id = select max(id) from some_table id++ insert into some_table values(id, othervalues...) Now, if another thread started the same transaction before the first one finished its insert, you would get two identical ids and a failure when trying to insert the last one. You could check for that failure and retry, but a simpler solution might be setting an isolation level on the transaction. For this, would I need SERIALIZABLE or a lower level? Additionally, is this, generally, a sound way of solving the problem? Are the any other ways of doing it?

  Hi, Our client-server product has the protocol between them as XML over HTTP. Here, the client asks a GET/POST query to the web server and the server responds with XML. The server is written using django. The server has to be on the web because there are many clients across the world using this. The server code uses extensive memoization and also there is very less db queries - most queries dont have any db queries, some of them has max 1. The biggest problem is the speed. Every query takes close to 5 seconds for the reply. The data replied is also very less - in the range of 4-6 Kb. What are the mechanisms to improve speed of the web service? Is this the usual way of writing a client-server? Are there other technologies and are we missing out on it? Thank you K

• An Efficient data structure for Sorted List

  I want to save my objects according to a key in the attributes of my object in a sorted fashion. Later on I'll access these objects sequentially from max key to min key. I'll do some search tasks as well. I consider to use either AVL tree or RB Tree. As far as i know they are nearly equivalent in theory(Both have O(logn)). But in practice which one might be better in performance in my situation. And is there a better alternative than those, considering that I'll mostly do insert and sequentially access to the ds.

• BULK INSERT with inconsitant number of columns

  I am trying to load a large amount data in SQL server from a flat file using BULK INSERT. However, my file has varying number of column, for instance the first row contains 14 and the second contains 4. That is OK, I just want to make a table with the max number of columns and load the file into it with nulls for the missing columns. I can play with it from that point. But it seems that SQL Server when reaching the end of the line and having more columns to fill for that same row in the destination table, just moves on to the next line and attempts to put the data on that line to the wrong column of the table. Is there a way to get the behavior that I am looking for? Is there a table hint that I can use the specify this? Has anyone run into this before?   I plan on using a scrollbar for, well, scrolling an image. The image is 200x500, however, the only visible area is 200x250. So I set the max value to 250, and the min value to 0. The idea is that if I drag the scrollbar's button to the bottom, 250 pixels will have moved for the image, right? But wait, the scrollbar's button is.... very small. And the scrollbar is actually pretty long. Is there a way to make the scrollbar's button longer?

I need to query based on a list of keys for which I'll use the IN operator. I know that the max. number of values you can provide for the IN clause is 30.   I'm trying to render data from an AJAX response as a bar chart with jqplot. To render this bar chart I use two variables: s1 which contains the numbers ex: s1 = [22,67,32,89] ticks which contains the name corresponding to a number inside s1 ex: ticks = ["Jack", "Mary", "Paul", "John"] So my AJAX returns two variables, data1 and data2. • How to make scipy.interpolate give a an extrapolated result beyond the input range?

  I'm trying to port a program which uses a hand-rolled interpolator (developed by a mathematitian colleage) over to use the interpolators provided by scipy. I'd like to use or wrap the scipy interpolator so that it has as close as possible behavior to the old interpolator. A key difference between the two functions is that in our original interpolator - if the input value is above or below the input range, our original interpolator will extrapolate the result. If you try this with the scipy interpolator it raises a ValueError. Consider this program as an example: import numpy as np from scipy import interpolate x = np.arange(0,10) y = np.exp(-x/3.0) f = interpolate.interp1d(x, y) print f(9) print f(11) # Causes ValueError, because it's greater than max(x) Is there a sensible way to make it so that instead of crashing, the final line will simply do a linear extrapolate, continuing the gradients defined by the first and last two pouints to infinity. Note, that in the real software I'm not actually using the exp function - that's here for illustration only!

I would like to draw strings in columns, and when the string is to long I want to clip it and let it end with "...". How can I measure the string and clip it at the right position? • Copying a 14bit grayscale image (saved in long[]) to a pictureBox

  My camera gives me 14bit grayscale images, but the API's function returns a long* to the image data. (so i'm assuming 4 bytes for each pixel) My application is written in C++/CLI, and the pictureBox is of .NET type. I am currently using the BitmapData.LockBits() mechanism to gain pointer access to the image data, and using memcpy(bmpData.Scan0.ToPointer(), imageData, sizeof(long)*height*width) to copy the image data to the Bitmap. For now, the only PixelFormat that is working is 32bit RGB, and the image appears in shades of blue with contours. Trying to initialize the Bitmap as 16bppGrayscale isn't working. I would ideally want to cast the array from long to word and using a 16bit format (hoping the the 14bit data will be displayed properly) but I'm not sure if this works. Also, I don't want to iterate over the image data, so finding the min/max and then histogram stretching to [0..255] isnt an option for me (the display must be as efficient as possible) Thanks

• Making sure unsigned int/long always execute in checked context in C#

  Has anyone found it strange that the default context for uint and ulong is unchecked rather than checked considering that they are meant to represent values that can never be negative? So if some code is trying to violate that constraint it seems to me the natural and preferred behaviour would be to throw an exception rather than returning the max value instead (which can easily leave important pieces of data in an invalid state and impossible to revert..). Is there an existing attribute which can be applied to either class/assembly so that it always performs arithmetic operations in a checked context? I was thinking of writing one myself (as an aspect using PostSharp) but would be great if there's one already. Many thanks,

  I need to convert a binary file (a zip file) into hexadecimal representation, to then send it to sql-server as a varbinary(max) function parameter. A full example (using a very small file!) is: 1) my file contains the following bits 000011110000111 2) I need a procedure to QUICKLY convert it to 0F0F 3) I will call a sql server function passing 0x0F0F as parameter The problem is that I have large files (up to 100MB, even if average file size is 100KB files are possible), so I need the fastest way to do this.
