• Creating disk snapshots in Windows 7

  Does anyone know of a command or tool to create disk snapshots on Windows 7 (client SKU)? I see vssadmin.exe has a "create shadow" option, but that's available only on server SKUs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788055(v=ws.10).aspx I've a backup tool that replicates changes (creations, modifications and deletions to files and directories) since last backup, to my backup volume. Before each time this happens I want to create a persistent snapshot on my backup volume. I could then mount previous snapshots to view previous backups achieving a behavior similar to that of TimeMachine in OS X.   I start my web server as web service on Windows XP. How it was done is described here My web server is coded in ruby/sinatra and I start it in .bat file. That file is used by the service too. Manually I stop the web server by pressing CTRL+C in the dos window. How can I stop the server now as it started via service? I found out that I can stop it via taskkill /f /t /im ruby.exe Is there any way I can use the MMC stop service function to stop the web server? runweb.bat c: cd C:\web ruby C:\web\web2.rb

• Visual Studio 2010: Is it possible to force editor to use ANSI rather than UTF-8?

  I am having issues with some files in automated processes, specifically with batch files and sql files. Visual Studio seems to create these as UTF-8 rather than ansi and adds some kind of special characters to the beginning of the file (I think this is a called a pre-amble) This breaks running batch files and running swl files through osql.exe. I have had issues myself in the past in creating text files using C#, but can get around that through encoding. However its seems a bit strange I cant use Visual studio to create batch files and sql files in a database project for automation.

• IIS 7.5 with PHP 5.3, displaying errors on page

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2, with IIS 7.5 and PHP 5.3 (configured by FastCGI). In my php.ini I have: log_errors = On display_errors = Off error_log = syslog (also tried an actual file with appropriate permissions) Each time a page contains an error, it is never logged anywhere, but it is displayed on the page (unless I turn log_errors off). I'm guessing that the stderr from php-cgi.exe is being put on the page, instead of being logged where it is supposed to be. Is there a setting somewhere that allows me to log these errors properly?

• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?

• How to make TortoiseHg pull certain branch only?

  I have cloned the default branch of a big repository and now I wish to pull from the server using the TortoiseHg client. However, TortoiseHg proposes to pull from all the branches. Is it possible to instruct it to pull from the current branch only? So far I have seen suggestions to: Setup a hook on the client side to reject pulls from unwanted branches Check incoming revisions in TortoiseHg and only pull the ones belonging to the current branch Use the Mercurial ACL extension to deny access to all the branches, but the current one. I dislike all of these solutions, since all of them are client based. In all of them TortoiseHg actually pulls all of the branches (even in the second, where the pulled revisions are arranged into a bundle presented in the incoming revisions view) Is there an hg pull -b BRANCH equivalent in TortoiseHg? Thanks. EDIT I know how to do all of this using the Mercurial command line client - hg.exe. This question is specifically about the TortoiseHg GUI client.

  Does anyone know about a webcam photo application (ie an alternative to photo booth) with would allow to change the settings on the camera, such as : Select camera (I.e I want to use an external webcam) Change camera resolution (with photobooth change camera settings (I.e autofocus, aperture, color balance, etc..) I did a lot of research on the internet with no success. I am looking for a very simple app (such as wmcap.exe on Windows) What I tried so far: photo booth: it works with an external camera, however there is no way to change the resolution, or the color/focus settings manycam : a virtual webcam driver. you can add special effects to your camera and transfer those effects to any app, but not change your camera settings... iGlasses : enables you to change the camera settings inside photo booth and other apps. However you cannot control the focus, nor the video resolution macam (did not work on my Mac book Pro) Does anyone know better than me? Note : my only solution now is to launch a virtual machine (with parallels desktop) and take the pictures from there!

  I tried to override the <legacyImpersonationPolicy> Element, so a single application, will enable this policy (which is necessary, since this application breaks if disabled). • Would there be any problems with DEP turned off?

  I recently moved to a fresh Windows 8 x64 system and I learned that my favourite firewall (JPF - Jetico Personal Firewall) doesn't get along with Win8x64 (CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION errors), but I can not do without JPF, so I kind of tried everything I could think of (test mode, debugging, various system changes), but I was still getting blue screens because of the firewall driver/software. I know for sure that it is the firewall that is causing the problems because I get blue screens as soon as I install it and they stop when I uninstall it. I Also tested it thoroughly on virtual computers. Anyway, I have discovered that by completely turning DEP off by using this command: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff the firewall would not cause blue screens anymore. So my question is, what could go wrong with DEP completely turned off? Note: I do not care much about hardware/windows security, I keep myself secured by using sandboxes and virtual computers (and I also have backups), so I'm not concerned with viruses and root kits or whatever people are freaking out about.

  Is it possible to pass command-line arguments to a program that is invoked via a file:// url? I'm trying to include Remote Desktop links in a wiki page that lists some servers: <a href="file:///c|/windows/system32/mstsc.exe /v:serverName">serverName</a> When I omit the argument the link works fine, but when I include it the link doesn't work. I Googled around a bit and couldn't find any references to this. I suspect that the answer is that file:// urls simple don't accept arguments (I can think of all kinds of ways to abuse them if they do), but I thought I'd throw it out there in case I've simply got the syntax wrong. • Prevent Windows Exporer to extract metadata

  Windows Explorer (windows 7 x64) crashes when it sees allegedly corrupted .wav files. I'm dealing with this problem and the hotfix doesn't work for me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976417/en-us The hotfix says that this happens if the .wav file is corrupt (which btw I don't think it is). What makes this even worse is that I can't access the file in any program! As soon as the open dialog sees the file, windows tries it's metadata extraction trick and exporer.exe halts. So my question: Can I by any means tell windows to stop this "metadata extraction" action ? (I have seen multiple problems associated with it in the past).

• Microsoft Outlook: Export list of currently opened PST files

  At my current workplace we are upgrading various users from XP to Windows 7. Frequently the users have anywhere from 10 to 30 or so .pst files opened within their installation of Microsoft Outlook 2007. These users are particularly helpless without these files. I know how to view the list of currently opened PST files, and would like to know if there is an easy way to capture that information other than taking screenshots of the Options - Data Files window. Does migwiz.exe transfer this information? Is that the only way? Would there happen to be a tool that will let you capture and restore that information? I don't want to export or move the actual .pst's themselves (yes, some of them are on network locations, very terrible, I know), just reopen ones in a new installation of Outlook that used to be opened in a previous installation.

• Elan Smart Pad - empty settings window

  I am using my Asus UL30JT with Windows 8. I installed Elan Smart-pad driver 11.14.1.3. It basically works just fine, I have all the gestures and stuff. However, to adjust the settings I have to launch regedit.exe, because the window appears to be broken. Under Mouse - Elan Tab - Options I see this: Do you know how to fix that? Also, if you have a similar program, can you at least send me screens of what I can change? As I said, I am editing registry right now and I need some guidance what I can actually do :)

  I found that ARJ.EXE archiver does not run under Windows 7 x64. Bot how can it be? The task of the achiver is to do some very basic file IO. How can it be so? Also I found that apparently no any old command line utility does not run under Windows 7 x64. Also I found that there is no any compatibility option for this case. • No colors when running native windows shell application from mintty

  Hi. I have installed cygwin (i'm not very experienced with it), and try to run a native windows shell application from it, (msbuild.exe which is the build tool for the .NET framework, to be exact). When I run the application from the normal cygwin bash shell, the output of the application appear as it should with the text colors that I would normally see in the windows command line. But when I execute the program from a mintty terminal, there is no coloring of the output, all text is in the default foreground color. I'm puzzled, because I would have expected the color coding to be the standard ANSI color code escape characters... Can this be fixed?

• Writing to network share failed

  I have outlook files stored on a network share and accessed by clients directly. Outlook is version 2003, clients windows XP and server is 2003. The files are quite big at around 3GB. One of the common problem that happens is that I get 'delayed write failed' and this happens only on these PST files. When this happens I have to run scanpst.exe to fix the PST file. I did not find any entries in even logs that I could relate to the issue. What would you suggest to change to fix the issue or where to look to further diagnose it? EDIT: No loss on ping and ping times within normal for LAN.

  I'm writing some scripts to make remote connections to a Windows 2003 server a bit more user-friendly, and in doing this I want to see who's logged in already. In Windows, I could use qwinsta.exe to do this, even for remote servers. So it is exposed somehow, but I couldn't find a matching command line tool for Unix. Lacking such a tool, I could install an ssh server on the machine and call it remotely, parsing the output or write a small service of my own that would expose this via http, if I don't want full-blown ssh access. Do I have to do this, or is there already a tool for querying terminal services remotely?

• How to play SWF files without browser

  I like to play some downloaded Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files without opening my internet browser. Sometime ago, I remember I could do it just double clicking on the SWF item. Then it was opening in a plain Shockwave window. Now XP won't play ball. I tried Folder Options > File types but couldn't find the associated player exe. How can I surpass this? Edit: There has to be some way to do this without a 3rd party software since I can already play SWFs on my browsers.

• Windows equivalent for Linux "screen" or another alternative?

  Hello all! I'm on the lookout for a method to control programs in a Windows environment. I would prefer it to be a bit similar to the Linux software "screen". The reason of my search is that I need to start a program (on Windows) with an identifier, so I later would be able to close that specific program, without closing anything else - even though the actual program (.exe file) is running multiple times. So is there anyway I can "name" it? I'm using the following on Linux now: $ screen <params> <id> ./softwareprogram And then I know I can always find it with it's ID :) It's an external program which is closing or starting a 3rd party program. My program is written in C++, if that does any difference. Thanks :)

• Is there an RSM replacement in Windows 7? (to eject USB and Firewire devices from command line)

  I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.

  I recently backed up my data and I had moved the vnc viewer executable from my PC to my portable hard disk. Realizing that I no longer had vnc, I got the latest one, but all of a sudden I could not connect to my server anymore and got authentification failure. So I moved the VNC exectuable back from my portable HD to my local HD. And I am still getting Authentification failure errors. I had a certain setup and I don't want to re-create it, do you know how I can recover or what happened to get auth failures all of a sudden ? I checked and the vncserver process is running fine. • Why can't I install MySQL on my computer?

  I have read a lot of tutorials, but I am still having problems. What I tried: I downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64. All that I read says that I can run Setup.exe, but there is no such file in the download. The other option I know there is, is including \mysql-5.5.9-winx64\bin in the PATH variable and then trying to execute the mysql command. When I do that, the error I get is: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) I then downloaded mysql-5.5.9-winx64.msi, which is easier to install, but once I followed the instructions and it was installed, I got the same error executing the mysql command. How can I use MySQL? EDIT: I've now removed everything I installed, and I want to start from scratch.

• Windows 8 blue screen error watchdog violation

  My system is windows 8 pro rtm x64. Recently my system started hanging frequently. Nothing but the restart button works. But now just after hanging it showed me a BSOD error saying watchdog violation. I used bluscreen viewer to see the error in the memory dump and it showed me something about hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe.
