• windows server backup 2008 R2 - what is generating all the change data?

  We have a small relatively idle windows server 2008 R2 installation that does basic filesharing and exchange for about 10 not very active users. When running a windows server backup, the incremental data daily is about 20GB. This is not coming from users shared files, nor from changes in their mailbox sizes. The total size of the installation is 249GB, which is mostly old files. Where is all this data coming from, and how can I reduce it ? Using online backup of the vhd file from the backup is taking a while because of this daily change. Is there some way I can at least see what files are changing and contributing to this data ? Options I can think of but am not sure about: 1) pagefile churning - altho the backup does not include the pagefile, perhaps the changed blocks left behind are included ? 2) logs or something ? but the installation size stays the same every day 3) should I zero free space using sdelete before backing up perhaps ?

  What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

• nfs server on cygwin slow

  The setup: We run an instance of cygwin nfsd on a Windows 2008 Server (Xeon 3,2 GHz). There are several Sun Solaris and SunOS machines accessing the shares. This is the exports file: /disk3 (rw,all_squash) /disk2 (rw,all_squash) Those paths are soft linked to the relevant cygdrive/d/path/to/dir paths. Some of the folders contain up to 10k files. The Problem: ls -la on the mounted folder on the sun boxes takes 2 - 3 minutes and the general read performance is really bad. cat filename displays the file in slow bursts and this hurts performance on tasks that access those shared files heavily. Processor load is not the issue, the nfs server idles most of the time, the cygwin tasks never get over 1% load.

  I have a Dell R710 with 72GB of memory running Hyper-V. Within Hyper-V I have a Windows 2008 (32-bit) VM running Terminal Services. How do I allocate memory so that any user who connects to this Terminal Server (from their thin-client) is allocated 2GB (or whatever amount I choose) of memory? Currently I have provisioned the TS with 2GB of memory but it seems that this is shared among all that connect. Please let me know if there is further information I can provide. Thank you.

• Tools to monitor guest OS performance in vSphere

  I am looking for some tool or way to retrieve performance data from guest VMs running under vSphere 4.1. I am currently interested in the 4 basic metrics: CPU(%), Memory(%), Disk availability(%) & Network utilisation(Kb/s). The issue I have is that all of vSphere's performance data is from a ESXi host perspective (active, shared, consumed, overhead, swapped etc.) which is far removed from the data from the VM's own perspective. For instance, I have a Windows server VM idling, using around 410MB (~25% of its allocated 2GB) as reported by Task Manager, and this is the value I'm after. vSphere's metrics seem unable to arrive at this figure by any reliable and repeatable means. Is anyone aware of tools that can obtain this kind of data? The simpler, the better.

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). Any ideas anyone?

• Do you find using a VPS worthwhile?

  I am currently on shared hosting, and have been recently looking at the idea of switching to a VPS instead. From what I have gathered, a VPS allows you more control over your server setup. But at the same time you have to set it up yourself, and maintain it. This is the bit I am asking about... Despite the power and flexibility you get from using a VPS, you have to take care of it yourself. Is it worth it? Some context: I am primarily a Windows user, but have been tinkering with various Linux distros off and on for several years. I know enough about Linux to get by, or to be dangerous - take your pick. I've also done some tinkering on my current host, but have no serious sysadmin experience. There's always a first time!

• Grant permission for specific other AD users to unlock/log out user from PC

  What I'm looking to do is permission a Windows PC (ideally XP but if a later OS version is required so be it) so that a select group of users can unlock the machine, logging the current user out. This something that a Local Admin for the machine would be able to do from a locked screen, however, I'd like to avoid granting Local Admin rights to this group of users if I can. The background here is that this machine is 80% used by one person but is treated as a 'shared machine' on days that the primary user is not around. It's usefull that everybody using the machine can carry on using their own accounts with all the personalisations they are used to. I'd also like to void logging the primary user out every night. No one else in the firm has to put up with that and she does use the machine herself most of the time.

• Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

• Best way to replicate servers

  I currently have two servers both with linux software RAID1 configurations. They use heartbeat and DRBD to create a shared DRBD device that hosts a a exported NFS directory. The servers run Ubuntu Server with a LXDE GUI and some IP These servers are going to be placed on fishing vessels to act has redundant storage for IP cameras. My boss wants me to figure out the most efficient way to create these servers. We might be looking at pushing out several systems a week. Each configuration will be almost identical besides IP addressing. What would be the best method to automate the configuration process? We are trying to cut down on labor costs to set these up. • How can I allow individual developers to have their own space to create git repositories?

  I have a server that is essentially a gitosis setup. I have a git user that has access to all the shared repositories. What I would like to do is have each developer be able to have their own "area" on this server to create their own repositories. I'd like these areas to be able to be viewable via gitweb. How can this be done that would require the least maintenance in terms of adding users and repositories? One obvious solution would be to just allow each developer to create repositories on the git login and have branches named something like <devname>-<reponame>. But I could see this getting unmanageable as the number of developers grows.

• What is the advantage of iSCSI over SMB?

  At my house I'm running a Hyper-V server with a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM acting as a file server. Files are shared across my network using SMB. (Also, the machine is using a PERC 6/i RAID card but I don't think that's important) I'm thinking about setting up a dedicated SAN (iSCSI) machine and then switching my Hyper-V server to ESXi. What are the advantages of using iSCSI versus SMB? I think I would still need a file server OS (eg. Win 2k8) sharing files via SMB so I'm not sure the end result would be any different than my current setup...

• My windows xp wireless hotspot isn't working

  I add the hotspot the regular way. Yet it doesn't show up as available when I try to connect to it using my other Ubuntu laptop. And nothing can connect to it. Yesterday, I successfully made it work for 5 minutes and then it stopped without me changing any configuration. I've already tryed resetting the DNS. Edit: I've updated my Broadcom 802.11b/g driver to a generic but more recent version. I've also repaired the WMI, now the advanced tab of my primary connection is available and the hand meaning the connection is shared appeared. But the computers still connect the wrong way around. (Windows to ubuntu instead of ubuntu to windows) Reinstalled SP3...

• nginx serves broken characters (nginx on linux as guest system in vbox)

  I have nginx 1.2.0-1 on debian 6.0.5. I have file test.css. I fill it with "abcd1234". Open it in browser. Then I change the content to "mnop". I receive "abcd" in response. I have all the files in folder shared between Windows (host) and Debian (guest) using Virtual Box. When I put the file elsewhere the problem does not occur! Any idea what can cause this? • Backup SQL server db issue: delete old backup files

  I tried to use sqlmaint.exe tool to back up a database on a remote PC. Here is an example of backup: sqlmaint.exe -S remoteSQLServer\SQLInstance -U username -P pwdxxx -D myDB -BkUpMedia DISK -BkUpDB C:\MSSQL_Backups -DelBkUps 3days ... Here I specified to delete backups older than 3 days. However, the job seems not deleting old bak files on the remote PC(where the SQL server sits). The remote PC has Windows 2008 Server. I also set the C:\MSQL_Backups as shared network drive for EnyOne as owner. My understanding is that the job will delete any bak files older than 3 days. Not sure what I missed? By the way, the job runs at a box with SQL server 2005 installed.

• Windows Home Server Passwords Do Not Match

  I have a Windows Home Server that chunks along just fine most of the time. I've never bothered to put it on a UPS and so it's vulnerable to power outages that happen a few times a year. This most recent time, it came back and seemed to be fine, but whenever I try to access a shared folder I get "Passwords do not match". They matched before the power went out, and I couldn't update the WHS password since I apparently didn't know the old one. How do I fix this? • Can I set up a 2nd home wireless router, with router2 connecting to the internet through a desktop which is wirelessly connected to router1?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

• Sync Banshee library data.

  I use Banshee to organise my music, I particularly like its scoring system and I have smart playlists based on it. However, I have two versions of my music library, one on each of my computers. As one of the computers is small I only have a favourite set of songs on that computer rather than my whole collection. The computers are not on a local network, but I do use Ubuntu One for file sharing between them. Is there any way I can synchronise song data (play count, score, skip count ...) and playlist data (including smart playlists that include songs based on this data) between the two computers? This would only be relevant of course for the songs that exist on both computers, the songs that exist on only one would need to be ignored. I did consider putting the library data file (I think it is .xml but I'm not sure) into the shared file and creating a symbolic link to it, but then I wouldn't be able to have a different set of songs on each computer. • What's the fastest way to store/access large files?

  I do a lot of video editing on my Mac and need a way to store very large (30 GB) files, and don't have room on my HD. A USB/Firewire external hard drive would work, but it seems way too slow for consistently working with such large files. I've also considered buying another computer, with a large hard drive, and putting it on the same network with a shared folder. What's the fastest / most efficient way to do this? Please consider USB 2.0 speeds, hard drive read times, ethernet speeds, etc. Are there other options I should consider?

• How can I register a custom protocol with xdg?

  I've been struggling this morning trying to associate an application with a custom protocol, namely emacsclient and org-protocol. I'm calling this protocol from a webbrowser bookmarklet, and I get the following behaviour : In chromium, the "Launch Application" dialog comes up, and calls xdg-open org-protocol://... which ends up firing a new chromium frame. In firefox, I've tried setting network.protocol-handler.app.org-protocol to an empty string or my emacsclient path, anyhow I get the following error message : "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (org-protocol) isn't associated with any program" without even showing any external application selection dialog. I'm not using any desktop environment, so I need to make this work strictly with xdg, however, despite reading the shared mime info spec etc, I still can't fathom a working configuration.
