• A 110 kb .NET 4.0 app needs 10 seconds for a cold start, thats not acceptable !

  Hello, I am using the .NET 4.0 client profile for my app and I run a dual core with 4 GB Ram and a fast hard disk. nothing big is done at the start just showing a generic List in a wpf listview. How can I make the cold start faster of my assembly ? I have done now again a cold start and run the windowsapplication.exe in my \obj\x86\Debug folder and my harddisk run like hell and it took 10,5 seconds ??? What is wrong? The warm start after the cold one took 1 second. Java 6 apps has not that problem, not at all just to compare...

• .NET Database application guidance.

  Hello, I'm stumbling in the data wilderness and feel very lost, so i am asking for help. I have done some database apps in VS (C#) winforms for some time, wpf lately. These are small to medium apps (embedded dbs, a bit of sql server), like a restaurants, cash registers and similar. (15-20 tables) Until now, i have done all my datasets by drag and drop in Visual Studio designer. I spent weeks on web trying to find some complete solution how to write complete solution with typed datasets by hand from scratch (DAL, B.Objects) in hope to learn some architecture patterns along the way, but without success. So, finally question. Can someone recommend me what to learn for this type of applications, maybe move away from datasets , use some ORM ( maybe overkill, i dont know). Point me in some direction please.

• XAML resources aren't loaded when calling from different project

  I have a WPF project with some styles in XAML in Application.Resources. This works perfectly fine. But when I open a window from this project from another one (this one is a console application), the resources from XAML aren't loaded. When I first tried it, I got a XamlParseException on StaticResource calls in XAML, so I changed it to DynamicResource and now the style just doesn't get loaded. How do I fix this? • What is the best way to handle navigation with PRISM?

  Using Prism - what is the best way to handle navigation in a WPF application? And how do you apply this? Are there any best practices? In my application I'm currently using Event Aggregation. Any menu item or other item that should result in navigation in the program will publish an event, and the module responsible for opening the view represented by the published event will do so. This works just fine, but I have a feeling this is not the best way to handle navigation with Prism. Is it?

• .NET make a copy of an embedded file resource to the local drive

  Hi, i'm new to the realm to working with Files in .NET I'm creating a WPF application in VB.NET with the 3.5 Framework. (If you provide an example in C#, that's perfectly fine.) In my project I have a Template for an MS Access database. My desired behavior is that when the users clicks File--New, they can create a new copy of this template, give it a filename, and save it to their local directory. The database already has the tables and some starting data needed to interface with my application (a user-friendly data editor) I'm thinking the approach is to include this "template.accdb" file as a resource in the project, and write it to a file somehow at runtime? Any guidance will be very, very appreciated. Thanks!

• Microsoft learning support for VS2010

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?

• Expression Studio - v2 good enough for learning?

  I have VS 2008, and looking forward to moving fairly quickly to VS2010. Our applications (we only have a few) are all winforms apps - mostly VB. I want to start to learn WPF. My version of Expression Studio is version 2. I have heard that the improvements made from version 2 to version 3 are significant. If it follows the paradigm of version 3 being the adult app (past the infancy of version 1 and the awkwardness of version 2), then I suppose it would be worth the investment to get it before starting to learn. But, unless my company was willing to pay, I am hoping to keep costs low. Can anyone share some experience - is version 2 good enough to learn on, or should I bite the bullet and smooth my learning experience by going with version 3? Thanks!

• Is there such a thing as a dektop application event aggregator, similar to that used in Prism?

  The event aggregator in Prism is great, and allows loosely coupled communication between modules within a composite application. Does such a thing exist that allows the same thing to happen between standalone applications running on a user's desktop? I could imagine developing a solution that uses WCF with TCP binding and running inside Windows Process Activation Service. Client applications could subscribe or publish events to this service as required and it would ensure all other listeners get notified of events as appropriate. Using TCP would enable event messages to be pushed out to clients without the need for polling, ensuring messages are delivered very quickly. I can't help but think though that such a thing would already exist... Is anyone aware of something like this, or have any advice on how it may be best implemented?

• get_called_class hack not working with eval-code.

  Hi there. I am using a ge_called_class hack for allowing late static binding in php version 5.2 (found here). I have the following in my code: # db_record.php $ac = "ForumThread"; $objects = $ac::find("all"); This will not work in php 5.2 for some reason, so I have done this: # db_record.php $ac = "ForumThread"; eval("\$objects = {$ac}::find('all');"); This on the other hand will not work with the get_called_class function. I get an error that the file function can't read the evaled section of code. So how do I solve this problem? Best regards.

• Input string was not in correct format.

  Hi Experts, I had a Ribbon like custom control. I created an application using this control. These applications work fine until I change the system number format. They crashes if I change the system number format like below: Current Format = English (United State) Decimal symbol = ',' Digit group symbol = '.' When I run applications, they throw an exception "Input string not in Correct format". . Some other applications specify the Exception's message = "Input string '0,2,0,2' was not a correct format", so I think in Wpf ES's xaml files, we may declare some properties i.e Padding, Margin like "0,2,0,2" = that will cause errors with the system number format above. I have note that this error only occurs in Windows Vista, it does not occurs on Windows XP. I do not know why? • Properties.Settings.Default.Default.Save() does not work

My UserControl consists of StackPanel StackPanel contains a Label and TextBox I am trying to create two Dependency Properties Text for the Label Orientation for the StackPanel - The orientation will affect the position of the Label and TextBox effectively I have successfully created a Text dependency property and bind it to my UserControls . • Open an Application .exe window inside another application

  I have an application in WPF running. I would like that, when a button is clicked inside this application, another application opens, with its window maximized. However, I don't want my first application to stop and wait. I want both to be open and running independently. When the button is clicked again, in case the application is minimized, the application is maximized. In case it is not, it is open again. How is it possible using C#? I have tried the following: Process process = Process.GetProcesses().FirstOrDefault(f => f.ProcessName.Contains("Analysis")); ShowWindow((process ??   Hello, I have lets say a WeeklyViewUserControl.xaml and a DailyViewUserControl.xaml. Normally I used stuff like this to switch content: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type ViewModel:LessonPlannerViewModel}"> <View:LessonPlannerDailyUC/> </DataTemplate> This worked so far. But now I have still the WeeklyViewUC which uses 90 % of the LessonPlannerViewModel code so I want to make this additionally: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type ViewModel:LessonPlannerViewModel}"> <View:LessonPlannerWeeklyUC/> </DataTemplate> but this can not work, because from where does the ContentControl know that VM (LessonPlannerViewModel) should display a DailyViewUC or a WeeklyViewUC ? <ContentControl Content="{Binding VM}" />

• Is it possible to reference a file stored in Isolated Storage by its URI?

  Using this previous question as motivation, I would like to temporarily store images and videos in Isolated Storage. My application (written in WPF/C#) will allow a user to review these temporarily stored items by viewing their contents in a MediaElement. I was hoping to set the MediaElement's Source Property to a video or image's URI stored in IsolatedStorage but I cannot figure out how to dynamically create a URI since it doesn't appear to be naively supported by IsolatedStorage. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you in advance! Update - 1/21/09 After battling the issue for a day, I concluded that the Isolated Storage approach is not practical for storing large video files that need to be referenced by a Uri.

I know that I must use Dispatcher to make reflect something to UI. But in this case I just create an object and dont iteract with UI. • Spring mvc: controller returns [][], usable in jsp with foreach, but how to bind?

  I'm building a spring mvc application. Now the problem I have is the following. I have a controller which adds a DayInfo[][] to my ModelMap. (DayInfo has an id, a title (String) and Text(also String). Now the problem I have is that I have no problem displaying this DayInfo[][] with foreach tags in my jsp. However I'm outputting the Title property as an input box(type text), and I'd like to be able to update this value (and thus saving it to be a database but that shouldn't be a problem). However I'm having trouble with binding this value to the input box so that it is actually returned to the controller. If anyone has some advice it would be welcome.

• How to make margin be relative to the center of the UIElement and not its top-left corner in a Grid?

  I'd like the Margin property to reference the center of the UIElement and not the top-left corner. That way when I change the width/height of the UIElement it stays in the same spot. Is there a way to configure this behavior or I'll have to rely on Binding to make the adjustment ? Thanks. • When should I use adorners?

By example, for what I understand, adorners can add some controls to a UI element, but I think that the same behavior can be achieved through a custom control that contains the additional element. So, my question is: when should I prefer adorners to a more complex (but I think, more flexible) custom control?   I am trying to create a custom panel in wpf. Here the doubts I have, How do I consider the HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment factors while placing the items within my panel. Should I check for these flags in my ArrangeOverride method ?? Consider that I want to write a WrapPanel clone. If the panel's width is set to "Auto", how do I get the actual width of the panel to arrange my child items. I always get the ActualWidth/ActualHeight as 0. Am I missing something??? Please help.

• How can I disable the F4 key from showing the items in a ComboBox

  You might not know this, but pressing the F4 key on a ComboBox makes it's drop-down item list appear. I believe this is the default behavior on Windows. Does anyone know how to override this behavior in WPF (C#)? I know that overriding default behavior is generally seen as bad practice, however in this case I have a rugged-device that runs XP Embedded. It has a handful of prominent Function keys (F1-F6) that need to trigger different events. This works fine, however when focused over a ComboBox the events aren't triggered as the ComboBox drops down. I have tried catching the KeyDown event both on the form and on the ComboBox and listening for the F4 key, however it doesn't get this far as the key press must be handled at a lower level. Any ideas? Thanks.

• System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier returns not the render mode

  I use System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier to show the current render mode within a diagnostics panel of my app. If I force the app (3.5sp1) to change the render-mode through the following code HwndSource hwndSource = PresentationSource.FromVisual(visual) as System.Windows.Interop.HwndSource; HwndTarget hwndTarget = hwndSource.CompositionTarget; hwndTarget.RenderMode = renderMode; neither System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.TierChanged fires, nor has the System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier property changed. However the changes are applied to the app. If I look with Perforator, the render mode has been changed to the desired mode. Although I’ve found at many locations that System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier can be used to detect the current render state (also msdn, see this), it seems, System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability only gives information about the capabilities and not about the current mode. That makes also sense if I look at the name of the class. Is there another source to know how an actual wpf-content is rendered or am I doing something wrong?
